jest pierwszym w Polsce, a także w tej części
Europy, tak wielkim pokazem sztuki grupy La-
ibach. Ekspozycja prezentuje fundamentalne
dzieła Laibach Kunst, których motywy posłuży-
ły jako budulec dla większości kreacji multidy-
scyplinarnego ruchu Neue Slowenische Kunst.
Laibach są współzałożycielami organizacji, zbu-
dowali pierwociny dla estetycznych strategii
i wątków charakteryzujących całą twórczość
NSK w latach osiemdziesiątych. Organizacje
wchodzące w skład NSK wytworzyły w Słowenii
platformę dla twórczości i ideologii, znajdującej
się w aktywnym dialogu/polemiką z obowią-
zującym wówczas w Jugosławii, i całym bloku
wschodnim, światopoglądem, jak i jego realną
praktyką. Na początku Laibach zaistniał jako
grupa artystyczna wykorzystująca różne media
wizualne i poruszająca się przede wszystkim
w obszarze plastyki. U zarania, Laibach sytu-
ował swoją aktywność w kanałach niezależnego
obiegu, działającego w stopniowo liberalizują-
cym się państwie realnego socjalizmu. W ów-
czesnych warunkach, paradoksalnie, muzykom
łatwiej było zorganizować wystawę grafik/dru-
ków z dźwiękowym podkładem w półlegalnej
galerii w prywatnym mieszkaniu niż publiczny
koncert. Wczesnym projektom plastycznym La-
ibach towarzyszyła muzyka industrialna, hałas
oraz projekcje video. W ich kręgu zainteresowań
znalazł się niemiecki ekspresjonizm; wnikliwa
eksploracja sztuki XX wieku – zainteresowa-
nia nurtami modernistycznymi: futuryzmem,
konstruktywizmem, suprematyzmem, która
prowadziła wprost do śladów po Nazi Kunst
i socrealizmie. Skrajnie naładowana ideologią
twórczość grupy Laibach wywoływała i nadal
wywołuje kontrowersje. Artyści naruszali wszel-
kie możliwe tabu, zmieniając raz na zawsze obli-
cze sztuki zza dawnej Żelaznej Kurtyny.
Ausstellung Laibach Kunst – Rekapitulacja 2009
obejmuje oryginalne prace, jak również ich aktu-
alne transpozycje.
Wy-
stawa została podzielona na odrębne sale, ob-
razujące wielość języków jakimi Laibach posłu-
żył się w czasie swojej blisko trzydziestoletniej
historii.
Instrumentality Of The State Machine
Hasło Wszechmoc Machiny Państwowej jest eg-
zemplifikacją oficjalnego języka Laibach – quasi no-
womowy, która charakteryzowała prawie wszystkie
deklaracje grupy. Stosujący od samego początku
taktykę szoku oraz świadomą dezorientację, członko-
wie grupy Laibach byli mistrzami wojny informacyjnej
i propagandy. Kontrolowana manipulacja ideologią
stawiała Laibach w zupełnej opozycji do ruchu dysy-
denckiego.
czy kontra wobec otaczającego go porządku. Pisane
językiem partyjnych rad plenarnych oficjalne dekla-
racje pełne były peanów ku czci mas i metafizycznie
pojętej idei wszechmocy systemu. Podczas gdy bun-
townicy usiłowali kwestionować alienację jednostki
w systemie, Laibach żądał więcej opresji. Pozorował
bezgraniczną afirmację machiny, totalną aprobatę
państwa jako nad-tworu. Manifestował statolatrię
i anonimowe zrośnięcie się z ustrojem.
Cztery urządzenia eksponowane na podestach są
podstawowym instrumentarium Laibach w okresie
pierwotnych, antytonalnych, bruitystycznych ekspe-
rymentów. Preparowane dźwięki magnetofonu szpu-
lowego, gramofonu, radia i megafonu stanowiły zrąb
ówczesnego brzmienia Laibach.
Apologija Laibach
Dokładnie odtworzona grupa Czterech Jeźdźców
Apokalipsy – obrazu Wernera Peinera, prominentne-
go artysty III Rzeszy – odnosi się do albumu, któ-
ry Laibach poświęcił wielkiej czwórce z Liverpool.
Eksploatacja zestawienia czwórek: Laibach versus
The Beatles versus prorocy zagłady służy jako cele-
bracja dekompozycji pierwotnego albumu Let It Be.
W sali znajduje się także wizerunek Thomaža Host-
nika oraz słowa jego poematu Apologija Laibach.
Współzałożyciel Laibach popełnił samobójstwo
w 1982 roku, wieszając się w kozlecu – drewnianym
koźle do suszenia słomy – charakterystycznym sym-
bolu wsi słoweńskiej. Budując swój własny mit „Ojca
Założyciela”, Laibach dotyka kluczowej dla współcze-
snej pop kultury kwestii permanentnej produkcji po-
zorowanych mitów.
Do celowej petryfikacji legend nawiązuje również
Czerwona Sala. Inspirowana przez specyfikę Czer-
wonych Dzielnic w rodzinnym mieście grupy. Laibach
powstał w Trbovlje – w niewielkim górniczym mieście
– znaku słoweńskiego przemysłu ciężkiego, kopalń,
hut i forsownej industrializacji okresu stalinizmu.
Kolebka Laibach to aktywne w XX-wiecznym ruchu
robotniczym miasto, do dziś żyje swoją rewolucyjna
mitologią. Trbovlje oddane jest tutaj w formie drze-
worytowych industrialnych wedut. Anonimowe grafi-
ki (widoki Rdeči Revirji – Czerwonych Dzielnic) zostały
wystawione po raz pierwszy na ekspozycjach Laibach
Kunst w 1981 i 1982 roku w Lublanie i Belgradzie. Nie
posiadają osobowego autora, są jedną z wielu eg-
zemplifikacji taktyki zawłaszczania [appropriation]
obrazów, wizerunków, podobizn. Motywy przechwyty-
wane ulegają proliferacji w zupełnie przebudowanym
wymiarze.
Multiple
Elementarna dla wizerunku grupy oraz miejsca ich
pochodzenia jest figura Metalec. Robotnik z kilofem
w ręku, dzierżący także koło zębate – obiekty fety-
szyzacji pracy i przemysłu ciężkiego w propagandzie
realnego socjalizmu, powstał w pierwszej wersji
w 1980 roku. Zestawiony z nim modelowy kicz w po-
staci jelenia zawiera równie jasną symbolikę – skon-
trapunktowany z multiplikacją syntetycznego wize-
runku robotnika rozbija partykularne składowe, pro-
dukując zupełnie osobny fakt znaczeniowy. Repetycje
obrazów i dźwięków stanowią rudymentarną jakość
w metodologii Laibach. Figura stachanowca ożywia
pamięć bohaterów współzawodnictwa i totalitarnej
dyscypliny pracy. Demonstrując zarówno surową siłę,
jak i optymistyczną wiarę w świetlaną przyszłość,
uosabia alienację w systemie totalitarnym i odczło-
wieczającą przemoc masowej produkcji. Laibach uży-
wał alienujących, opresywnych obrazów, dźwięków,
fraz w celu demaskowania i rekapitulacji, niewolnej
od nich, współczesnej rzeczywistości. Wystawione
w sali Restauracja obrazy każą poddawać w wątpli-
wość istnienie pierwotnych wersji. Stanowią wariację
na temat zamierzchłych oryginałów, ich dalekie odbi-
cie w „pop fowistycznej” manierze. Repliki oryginal-
nych prac prowokują pytanie o skalę wartości kopii
i oryginałów. Recykling wątków jawi się jak remik-
sy lub covery utworów innych wykonawców. Prace
zawierają jedynie echa znajomych motywów Meta-
lowca, Siewcy, Jelenia…, pojawiających się do dziś
w coraz to nowych mutacjach w dziełach Laibach.
XY Unsolved [Nierozstrzygnięty, nierozwiązany]
W 1983 Laibach udzielił swojego pierwszego w hi-
storii telewizyjnego wywiadu, pamiętny materiał zo-
baczyła wówczas cała Jugosławia. Projekcja ukazuje
członków grupy Laibach w specjalnie zaaranżowanym
studiu telewizyjnym, odpowiadających na manipula-
tywne pytania specjalnie przygotowanego redaktora.
Ogólnokrajowa emisja programu TV Tednik sprowoko-
wała natychmiastowe reperkusje. Szok, jaki wywo-
łał, miał swoje daleko idące konsekwencje. Ogolone
głowy, militarne uniformy, retoryka Laibach wywołały
oburzenie i konfuzję większości widzów. Odpowiedzią
były natychmiastowe kroki władz. Niesławny zespół
trafił na listę proskrypcyjną. Oficjalnie zabroniono
używania nazwy „Laibach” oraz zakazano publicznych
występów na terenie całej Jugosławii. Wykorzystanie
słowa „Laibach” naruszyło wieloletnie tabu, związane
właśnie z niemieckojęzyczną nazwą Lublany, używa-
ną od 1144 roku przede wszystkim przez Austriaków
i Niemców. W czasach okupacji, w latach czterdzie-
stych ubiegłego wieku, nazwa Laibach powróciła jako
element germanizacyjnej polityki hitlerowskich na-
jeźdźców.
Złota (polska) sala. Aurum de stercore
W 1983 roku Laibach rozpoczął swoją pierwszą mię-
dzynarodową trasę Occupied Europe Tour. Trasa objęła
kilkanaście miast po obu stronach Żelaznej Kurtyny.
W drodze do Polski, służba graniczna Czechosłowacji
odmówiła grupie pozwolenia na tranzyt, motywując
brak zgody wyglądem muzyków. Przedstawiciele am-
basady jugosłowiańskiej wystosowali oficjalne prote-
sty przeciwko polskim występom zabronionej grupy.
Laibach wystąpił jednak we Wrocławiu, Toruniu, Kra-
kowie i Warszawie. Podczas konferencji prasowej
w Warszawie, ktoś z obecnych gości, z przyjazną miną
podał członkom grupy opakowany w gazetę Trybuna
Ludu, jeszcze ciepły, fekalny podarunek. Anonimowy
gest polskiego odbiorcy pozostaje jednym z wielu
przykładów radykalnych reakcji, jakie napotykała
kreacja Laibach. Otrzymany prezent szerzej obrazu-
je problematyczne uwarunkowania recepcji Laibach
w Polsce lat osiemdziesiątych. Stylizowana na propa-
gandową nowomowę frazeologia nie wzbudzała sym-
patii, a gdy Laibach w Warszawie publicznie określili
się jako komuniści, wzbudzili zupełną niechęć i odrzu-
cenie. Laibach byli radykałami którzy trafili do układu
nie dopuszczającego ironii; odpowiedzi innej niż po-
parcie i bierny lub aktywny opór, tertium non datur.
W systemie bipolarnych opozycji subwersywna opcja
Laibach była odbierana opacznie lub wcale nie trafia-
ła do odbiorcy. W hiperzideologizowanej kulturze na
zdecydowany nihilizm decydowali się nieliczni. Skon-
fundowani widzowie pozostawali zazwyczaj milczący.
Scena punk, która stanowiła gros ówczesnej publicz-
ności koncertów Laibach w Polsce, była zasadniczo
antypaństwowa i antysocjalistyczna. Polscy punks
mieli nawet problem z zaakceptowaniem, pozujące-
go na socjalistów, zespołu The Clash. Prowokacja,
implozywny sabotaż oraz inne strategie stosowane
w taktyce Laibach nie zostały zrozumiane. Laibach
byli aroganckimi dadaistami, bez eksplikacji i bez
pardonu wkraczającymi ze swoim ekscesem w ponu-
ry, straumatyzowany kraj, wkrótce po uchyleniu sta-
nu wojennego. Na domiar złego w swojej niejasnej,
„militarystycznej” twórczości Laibach przywołał ge-
nerała Jaruzelskiego. Traktował go jako jedną z figur
strachu i terroru, jako europejską wersję dyktatora
Augusto Pinocheta. W zacytowaniu jego frazy o poko-
ju i stabilizacji brakowało cienia krytyki czy jakiego-
kolwiek potępienia. Żadnej wywrotowości. Jaruzelski
został potraktowany w twórczości Laibach jak żywy
obiekt ideologicznego ready-made.

POKOJU
I STABILIZACJI.
Unikalny status Laibach powodował, że zespół
dystansował się od słoweńskiego, jak i jugo-
słowiańskiego ruchu sprzeciwu politycznego.
Grupa nie zamykała się przed półoficjalnym
obiegiem, działała, używając metod odmiennych
niż protest. Obcy był im typowy dla wschodniej
Europy lat osiemdziesiątych dysydentyzm. We-
bezlitosnym, najbardziej pierwotnym i okrutnym
wymiarze. Laibach zwrócił się ku niewymiarowej
sferze, gdzie hitleryzm, faszyzm i komunizm sta-
ją się jedną, totalną, demagogiczną, antyludzką
maszynerią.
W eksploatacji aberracyjnego wymiaru historii
i aktualności bojowa sztuka Laibach, aby zo-
stać zauważoną, musiała być surowa i musiała
przekraczać granice. Jej techniki były zarówno
intuicyjne, jak i systematyczne; brutalnie ata-
kowała, ale prowadziła też gry z odbiorcą. Nie
unikała wewnętrznych sprzeczności i gwałciła
konceptualistyczny dogmat, zakazujący bezpo-
średniości wyrazu i ekspresji.
stycznej. Większość systemów totalitarnych wyraża
się poprzez neoklasycystyczną architekturę, malar-
stwo rodzajowe, a w rozrywce preferuje sentymenta-
lizm, lekkie komedie i melodramaty. Laibach reprodu-
kował prawdziwą, demoniczną twarz systemu, jego
estetyki i... jednoczył się z nią. Atakował i epatował
kombinacją socrealistycznej agitacyjnej propagandy
i hitlerowskiej „neoklasycznej” figuracji. Zaakcen-
tował brak podziału między sztuką a polityką. Głosił
systematyczny, przemysłowy wysiłek artysty, inten-
sywną agitację i repetytywność muzyki disco, której
charakter był, według nich, czystym odbiciem rytmu
totalitarnego porządku.
Laibach wciąż trwa w aktywnym dialogu z otaczają-
cą rzeczywistością. Ich strategie uległy modulacji,
jednak intensywność postawy pozostała równie sil-
na. Triumfujący konsumpcjonizm, postępująca de-
waluacja wszelkich znaczeń i kodów, stanowią pole
zarówno inspiracji, jak i analizy czy penetracji. Wbrew
powszechnym opiniom Laibach nigdy nie ubierali się
w niemieckie mundury. Po raz pierwszy użyli nazi
uniformów dopiero w 2003 roku. Fotogram umiesz-
czony w sali Monumentalna Retroawangarda jest
dokumentem akcji Einkauf, kiedy członkowie Laibach,
w pełnych uniformach SS i Wehrmachtu, udali się do
centrum handlowego City Park w Lublanie. Shopping
Laibach odbywa się w warunkach euforycznej kon-
sumpcji, ostatecznej instalacji importowanego, ame-
rykańskiego stylu życia oraz zachodniej dominacji
obyczajowej i kulturalnej. Systemy Układu Warszaw-
skiego, jak i dawna Jugosławia, bazowały na prze-
mocy i utopijnej koncepcji polityczno-ideologicznej.
Nowy globalny porządek konsumeryzmu ustanowił
jeszcze silniejszą, bezwarunkową i wszechobecną
merkantylną dyscyplinę, z nieustannie mutującą się
pop kulturą, pozbawiającą argumentów i siły wszel-
kich oponentów. Mającym nadzieję na wolność spo-
łeczeństwom indukowano nowy paradygmat „inte-
ligentnego totalitaryzmu”, dającego podległym mu
jednostkom poczucie swobody.
Laibach,
jako metodę wobec zastanego dziedzictwa, obiera
selekcję. Przewartościowanie i celowe wypaczanie
znaczeń, odkrywanie niewidocznych komunikatów
jest wymogiem naszych czasów. Misją jest pene-
tracja relacji sztuki i ideologii. Laibach analizował
systemy terroru, koncentrując się na ich wymiarze
estetycznym. Grupa korzystała z Nazi Kunst, jak
i z antyhitlerowskich fotomontaży Johna Heart-
fielda. Sztuka nazistowska dostarczała nie tylko

Ausstellung Laibach KunstRekapitulacja 2009
Ausstellung Laibach Kunst – Rekapitulacja 2009
is the first extensive presentation of Laibach
artwork in Poland and this part of Europe. The
exhibition presents the fundamental works
of Laibach Kunst, whose motifs were used as
the basics for most of the creations of the
multidisciplinary art movement called Neue
Slowenische Kunst. Laibach as co-founders
of the project, built the foundations and the
first-fruits for the aesthetic strategies and the
threads characteristic for the whole NSK pro-
duction in the 80’s. The organisations gathered
in NSK created in Slovenia a platform for crea-
tion and ideology in a state of controversy with
the worldview and its practise in the whole of
Yugoslavia and the Eastern Block. Laibach was
at first a group of mainly visual artists using
different visual media. At the beginning Laibach
channelled its activity through the independent
scene which functioned in the gradually liberal-
ising state of self-management. The early visual
Laibach projects were accompanied by indus-
trial music, noise and multi-media shows. Lai-
bach were interested in German Expressionism,
profound exploration of the 20th century art,
sampling modern movements such as futurism,
constructivism, suprematism, leading straight
to the traces of Nazi Kunst and social realism.
Laibach’s ideology-loaden art evoked controver-
sies, and still does. The artists trespassed all
imaginable taboos, by which they changed the
face of the art from behind the Iron Curtain.
Ausstellung Laibach Kunst – Recapitulation 2009
contains original works and their contemporary
reinterpretations. The sources of those in the
majority come from the 80’s. The originals were
either paintings, linocut graphics, easily dam-
ageable Xerox copies, collages or flyers. Dur-
ing the stormy history of Laibach a large part
of these works was destroyed or lost. In many
cases the contemporary reinterpretations are
the only way to present them. The exhibition
is divided into different sections where the di-
verse visual languages used by the group during
their nearly 30-year-long activity, are displayed.
Instrumentality Of The State Machine
The slogan Instrumentality Of The State Machine ex-
emplifies the official Laibach language – provoking
parallels to the Orwellian ‘Newspeak’ - which branded
the groups declarations right from the start. From
the beginning the groups’ members used shock
tactics and conscious disorientation in profession-
ally mastering the information war and propaganda.
Controlled manipulation of ideology placed Laibach
in total opposition to the dissident movement. The
group’s strategy assumed that the omnipotent sys-
tem is immune to all resistance. The existence of
subversive groups is imminent for its nature. Laibach
proposed a peculiarly understated identification
with machinery. The extension of that method was
disinformation. The group never took a stance for
or against the ruling order. They wrote official dec-
larations full of puns, celebrating mass-gathering
and the metaphysically comprehended idea of the
omnipotence of the system, with the language of
party meeting protocols. While the opposition tried
to question the alienation of the individual within
the system, Laibach called for more oppression. They
pretended to affirm the machine limitlessly in totally
accepting the state as the “Über-System”. Laibach
manifested the idealised state through their deper-
sonalised immersion into the systemic strategy.
The four devices presented on the platforms are the
basic instruments in the period of primary, anti-total,
bruitist experiments. The artificial sounds from the

estetycznych inspiracji, była polemicznie łączo-
na z elementami pop, rustykalnymi oraz z biegle
opanowanymi językami awangardy i moderni-
zmu. Utylizacja wątków nazistowskiej i germań-
skiej ikonosfery współkreowała surowy wizerunek
grupy i jej ideologii. Zastosowanie znajdowała tu
substancjonalna dla Laibach strategia dekontek-
stualizacji – wypaczania i demaskowania ukry-
tych sensów. Uparta eksploatacja niektórych
wątków doprowadzała ich znaczenia do absurdu
i tylko powierzchowna recepcja mogła sugerować, że
Laibach uosabia składowe swojej sztuki.
Revolution still continues
Konstrukcja
zawiera poroża jeleni, flagi oraz wszystkie elementy
totalnego spektaklu. Jest reprezentacją sformalizo-
wanych i statycznych elementów Gesamtunstwerk
Laibach, którego publiczne wystąpienia wymagały
u widza maksymalnej atencji i oddania. Wszystkie
składniki zajmują swoje szczególne miejsce w ide-
ologicznym kosmosie zespołu Laibach, pozostały
zamrożone na lata, lecz ich znaczenie wciąż ulega
modyfikacji i ewoluuje.
Obiekty Ausstellung Laibach Kunst – Rekapitu-
lacja 2009 są zestawiane wbrew chronologicz-
nym porządkom. Laibach poddał w wątpliwość
i ostatecznie dobił sens pojęć takich jak re-
gres i postęp. Wystawa konsekwentnie rozwija
i przekształca archaiczne wątki Laibach Kunst.
Strategia budowania nowych znaczeń transfor-
macji w aktywnym dialogu ze zmieniającym się
kontekstem jest charakterystyczna dla prakty-
ki, metody Laibach. Na ścianach Muzeum Sztuki
w Łodzi zawisły historyczne manifesty, deklara-
cje grupy, obok nich widnieją aktualne prace. Za-
bytki mieszają się z bieżącymi realizacjami, zy-
skują nowy kontekst i deformują swój pierwot-
ny wymiar. Symbole, które niegdyś uchodziły za
wykroczenie, niejasną perwersję, okazują się ze
wszech miar uzasadnione. Każdy dzień tworzą-
cej się historii transformuje znaczenia tych ar-
tefaktów. Stanowią zarówno dokumentację wal-
ki polaryzujących się przeciwieństw, przemocy
i napięć, które wywarły piętno na ostatnich
dekadach w centralnej i południowej Europie,
jak wciąż poruszający, żywy i prowokujący im-
puls. Dzisiejsze oblicze grupy Laibach kształtuje
również ich własna przeszłość i blisko trzydzie-
stoletni dorobek fenomenu, który wytworzył
odrębny, audiowizualny konstrukt. Ich, niekiedy
marginalizowana, twórczość ulega wciąż rady-
kalnym woltom i nieustannej ewolucji. Tempora
mutantur i Laibach zmienia się wraz z nimi. Każ-
da kolejna realizacja przynosi nową próbę sił
i odporności dla odbiorców. Mimo kontrowersji
i skandali, przez lata udało się im wykroczyć poza
wymiar ograniczeń sceny muzycznej czy tzw. art
world. Wybory estetyczne Laibach wciąż budzą
niepokój, a spory wokół nie mają końca. Nie-
ustające wyzwanie przekracza jednak wymiar
zwykłej prowokacji. Sprowadzanie wszystkiego
w Laibach do fascynacji czy penetracji dwu-
dziestowiecznych totalitaryzmów jest naduży-
ciem. Zespół odmawiał wszelkich kategoryzacji
i zdradzał daleko szersze pole działania. Laibach
tkwi zawsze na swojej pozycji demaskującego
obserwatora. Natura współczesności zmusza
do wniosku, że nigdy nie zabraknie im inspiracji.

sion.
Apologija Laibach
A reinterpretation of the group The Four Riders of
Apocalypse from a painting by Werner Peiner – a
prominent artist of The Third Reich- refers to the
album devoted to the great four of Liverpool. The ex-
ploitation of the fours: Laibach versus The Beatles
versus the prophets of the disaster, is to be seen as
celebration of the decomposition of the initial piece
Let It Be. In the room we also see the picture of
Thomaž Hostnik and the words of his poem Apologija
Laibach. The co-founder of Laibach committed sui-
cide in 1982, hanging himself in a typical Slovenian
barn kozlec. Building their own myth of the Father
Founder Laibach touches upon the question of the
permanent production of constructed myths which
is a key problem for contemporary pop culture.
The Red Room refers to the purposeful petrification
of legends. Red Districts are views of the Rdeči Re-
virji working class districts in Laibachs home town.
Laibach was born in Trbovlje – a little mining town
– a symbol of Slovenian industry, mining, steel works
and the devastating industrialization of the Sta-
lin period. The birthplace of Laibach is a workers
town active in the labour movement of the twenti-
eth century which still lives within its revolutionary
mythology. Trbovlje is shown in industrial woodcut
panoramas. Anonymous drawings were first shown
at the exhibitions of Laibach Kunst in 1981 and 1982
in Ljubljana and Belgrad. They don’t have a personal-
ized authorship, they are one of the many examples
of the tactics of appropriation of pictures, images,
likenesses. The motifs intercepted are proliferated
in a reconstructions.
Multiple
The elementary for the group’s image and their place
of origin is the figure Metalec. A labourer with a pick-
axe holding a cog-wheel – the fetishes of the labour
and the heavy industry in the propaganda of social
realism - created in its initial version in 1980. The
deer figure contains equally clear symbols. It cre-
ates a counterpart within the synthetic multiplied
„environment” of the Metalworker linocuts. This pro-
duces a short-circuit in interpretation. Reiteration
of images and sounds is the rudimentary quality of
Laibach methodology. The worker figure refreshes
the memory of the heroes of competitive plan fulfil-
ment and the totalitarian labour discipline. Demon-
strating both the rough force and optimistic faith in
the bright future it personifies the alienation in the
totalitarian system and alienating violence of mass
production. Laibach used alienation, oppressive im-
ages, sounds, phrases in order to unveil and reca-
pitulate the contemporary reality in turning its own
strategies against it. The process of disintegrating
over-identification disclosed the nature of repres-
sion, accentuated and revealed its elements to set
itself free from its influence.
The pictures presented in the hall Restoration
render their originals obscure. They are a variation
on the theme of the immemorial original versions.
They are a distant reflection. The reinterpretations
of the original works evoke the question of the value
of the original and the copy. The recycling of motifs
turns out to look like re-mixes or cover versions of
other artists works. Their works contain mere ech-
oes of the well-known motifs of the Metalworker, the
Sower, the Deer, etc. which up until now still reappear
in new mutations in Laibach’s pieces.
XY Unsolved
In 1983 Laibach were interviewed in television for
the first time. The material was seen by all viewers in
Slovenia. The show presents the members of Laibach
in a specially arranged and lit TV studio answering
manipulative questions by a well prepared journal-
ist. The national broadcast of the show TV Tednik
provoked instant repercussions. The shock that was
caused by it had far-reaching consequences. The
shaved heads, the military uniforms, their totalitar-
ian rhetoric caused outrage and confusion among
most of the viewers. Veteran organisations and eld-
erly partisans demanded that the group should be
banned from public appearance. The government’s
answer was immediate. The infamous group was put
on a black list. The name Laibach was prohibited and
the group was stopped from giving performances
all over Yugoslavia. The use of the word Laibach was
a long lasting taboo, as it was the official name of
Ljubljana since 1144, used mainly by Germans and
Austrians during WW2. Tshe name re-appeared as an
element of germanisation politics of the Nazi occu-
pant.
Złota (polska) sala. Golden Room.
Aurum de stercore
In 1983 Laibach started their first international Oc-
cupied Europe Tour. The tour included several cities
on both sides of the Iron Curtain. On the way to Po-
land the Czechoslovakian border control denied tran-
sit through to Poland due to their outfits. The repre-
sentatives of the Yugoslavian Embassy issued offi-
cial protests against the performance of the banned
group. Laibach nevertheless performed in Wrocław,
Toruń, Kraków and Warsaw. During a press confer-
ence in Warsaw one of the guests smilingly handed
them a faecal gift wrapped in the Communist Party
official newspaper Trybuna Ludu, still warm. This
anonymous gesture of the Polish viewer is one of
the radical reactions that Laibachs’ performance
caused. That gift shows a wider perspective of the
circumstances of the reception of Laibach in the
80’s. Their first appearance in Poland was problem-
atic. The stylised Newspeak phraseology was not
well received by Poles, and when Laibach described
themselves as communists, all they got was loath
and disgust. Laibach were radicals entering a sys-
tem which could not bear irony; no other answer
than support or resistance (active or passive), ter-
tium non datur.
In this system of bipolar oppositions Laibachs sub-
versive stance was misunderstood or did not reach
the audience. In this hyper-ideologized culture there
were only few who ventured resolute nihilism. The
confused audience stayed silent. The punk audience
who formed the majority of Laibachs audience in Po-
land was principally anti-state anti-socialist. Punks in
Poland even had problems accepting the Clash who
proclaimed themselves socialists. The provocation,
the implosive sabotage and other strategies used
by Laibach were not understood in Poland. Laibach
were arrogant Dadaists who acted with no excuses,
no explanations, who inserted their excesses into
the traumatised society soon after the Martial Law
was called off. Not only that, but also the unclear ref-
erence to General Jaruzelski was provocative. They
treated him as one of the figures of terror and fear,
as a European version of the dictator Augusto Pinoc-
het. But in the quotation on peace and stabilisation
there was no trace of criticism or condemnation.
Jaruzelski was used as a living object, an ideological
ready-made.
Jaruzelsky
General Jaruzelsky proclaimed
August 31 as a Day of Work and Peace
He emphasizes: “The Authority
Might be unsympathetic
But it is the only immortal way of peace
And stabilisation”
The unique status of Laibach brought about
their distance from both Slovenian and Yugo-
slavian political opposition. The group was not
closed towards semi-official circles. Laibach
operated with methods other than simplistic
protest, avoiding the typical Yugoslavian dissi-
dentism of the 80’s. According to them the ex-
isting system was immune to opposition as it
was its immanent part. Laibachs strategy was
their over-identification with the system. The
immersion into its structures took place in its
uncovered, merciless, most primeval and cruel
form. Laibach turned to one non-dimensional
sphere where hitlerism, fascism, communism
become one total, demagogical anti-human ma-
chinery.
In exploiting the atrocities of the past and the
present, the militant art of Laibach had to stay
rough, transgressing the borders of norm. Its
techniques were both intuitive and systematic;
they attacked brutally and at the same time
tricked the audience. They never avoided inner
contradiction and violated the conceptualist
dogma which prohibited direct expression.
Laibach tactics can be interconnected with the idea
of the Russian formalists ostranenie (defamiliariza-
tion). Important here is the fact that the notion of
formalism was misused as a universal accusation
for any art-form not in line with the state dogma of
social realism.
Many totalitarian systems express themselves
through neo-classicist architecture, domestic por-
traiture, sentimentalism, light comedy and melodra-
ma. Laibach reproduced the true demonic face of the
system, its aesthetics and seemingly unified with it.
Both attacking and shocking through the combina-
tion of the socialist agitating propaganda and Nazi
“neo-classicist” figuration, Laibach emphasized
the lack of division between art and politics. They
preached the systematic, industrial effort of the art-
ist, intense agitation and the repetitiveness of disco
music, which according to Laibach, bears the purest
reflection of the totalitarian order.
Monumental Retrogarde
Laibach stays in an active dialog with the surround-
ing reality. Their strategies were modified, but their
intensity stays the same. The triumph of consumer-
ism, the progressing devaluation of meanings and
codes become a field of inspiration and analysis or
penetration. Laibach never wore German uniforms
as the public wrongly assumed. They used Nazi uni-
forms for the first time in 2003. The Photogram
in the Monumental Retrograde hall is a document
from the action Einkauf when the Laibach members
dressed in SS and Wehrmacht uniforms for a shop-
ping trip in the City Park mall in Ljubljana. Shopping
Laibach is a euphoric act, the ultimate installation of
the imported American life style and Western cultur-
al domination. The Warsaw Pact and the Ex-Yugosla-
vian systems were based on violence and a utopian
political-ideological concept. The new global order
of consumerism introduced a yet stronger, uncon-
ditional, omnipotent and omnipresent discipline of
mercantilism, with its constantly mutating pop cul-
ture depriving its opponents of all power and argu-
ment. The nations hoping for freedom were induced
with a new paradigm of intelligent totalitarianism,
which gives the suppressed individuals a illusion of
freedom.
The use of motifs loaded with historical burden and
their placement into present contexts always caused
extreme reactions. In the whole group’s history the
one recurring question stays whether Laibach and
NSK are not by any chance Nazis. Laibach trespass
the ultimate taboo, which in the era of total mix-up
and inflation of symbols is still a particular and for-
bidden territory. Laibach chooses selection as their
method. The revaluation and the purposeful defor-
mation of senses, the decoding of hidden messages
is the requirement of our times. The groups mis-
sion is the penetration of the relationship between
art and ideology. Laibach analysed terror systems
focusing on their aesthetic dimension. The group
used both Nazi Kunst and the anti-Nazi photomon-
tages by John Heartfield. The Nazi art was not only an
aesthetic inspiration, its elements were polemically
interwoven with pop, folklore and the languages of
avant-garde and modernism: items of art history of
which they have perfect knowledge. The utilisation
of the threads of Nazi and German iconography co-
created the rough image of the group and its ideolo-
gy. Substantial for Laibachs strategy was decontex-
tualization, distortion of meanings and the revealing
of hidden meanings. The stubborn exploitation of
some of the motifs puts their original meaning ad
absurdum and only superficial perception could as-
sume that Laibach truly identify with the ideological
piecemeal components of their performance.
Revolution still continues – is where the viewer can
for the first time see the replica of a stage set from
the time of Laibachs Sturm und Drang period. Parts
of the environment are films from the unforgettable
moving concerts of the early 80’s. The construction
contains deer antlers, flags and all other elements of
the Laibach total spectacle. It is a representation of
the formalized, static elements of Laibach as Gesa-
mtkunstwerk, whose public performance demanded
maximum attention from the audience. All the ele-
ments take their particular place in the ideological
Laibach universe, they were deep frozen for years,
but their meaning continues to modify and evolve.
The works presented in Ausstellung Laibach
Kunst – Rekapitulacja 2009 are not following
a chronological order. Laibach questioned and
finally mutilated the notions of regress and
progress. The exhibition consistently develops
and reshapes the archaic threads of Laibach
Kunst. The strategy of building new meanings
and transformations in an act of dialogue with
the changing context is characteristic of the
Laibach method. On the walls of the Muzeum
Sztuki we find historic manifestos side by side
with present works. The old pieces blend with
the current reintrepretations, thus producing
a new context through deformation of their
primary dimension. The choice of symbols that
was once considered offensive, unclear perver-
sion turns out to be fully justified. Every event
of historic progress transforms the meaning of
these artefacts. They reflect the struggle be-
tween the polarising oppositions, the violence
and the tensions that branded the last few
decades in Central and Southern Europe, like a
living, moving and still provocative impulse. To-
day’s Laibach is shaped by their own past and
nearly thirty years of performing as a phenom-
enon which created a unique audio-visual con-
struct. Their often disregarded oeuvre still un-
dergoes radical vaults and constant evolution.
Tempora mutantur, and so does Laibach. Every
new release is a new challenge producing con-
troversy within the audience. Despite the scan-
dals over the years they succeeded in surpass-
ing the limitations of the musical scene as well
as the so called art world. Laibachs’ aesthetic
choices still cause anxiety, and the disputes
are never-ending. The perpetual challenge goes
beyond the dimension of sheer provocation.
Reducing everything in Laibach to fascination
or penetration of the twentieth century totali-
tarianisms is inaccurate. The group refused any
categorization. and defined their own field of
artistic activity. Laibach always remains in its
position of the performing observer. The nature
of our present-day culture makes us assume
that they will never run out of inspiration.

APOLOGIJA LAIBACH
Since when, sons of truth, are you the brothers of nightWhat colours your hands with the redness of blood
The explosion in the night is the flower of woe,Nothing can be justified by it.The altar cannot be destroyed,The altar of lies that multiplies forms.
The immaculate image, the painless lights,The only harbours of the terrible night.
We are children of the spirit and the brothers of strength, Whose promises are unfulfilled. We are the black phantoms of this world,We sing the mad image of woe.
The explanation is the whip and you bleed:
Break the mirror of the world for the hundredth time, All your efforts are in vain. We have overcome the night:Our debt has been paid
And the light is ours.
Tomaž Hostnik, 1982
APOLOGIA LAIBACH
Bezgrzeszny obraz, światła bezbolesne, jedyne schroniska strasznych nocy.
Dzieci ducha i bracia mocy,której obietnica nigdy się nie spełni.Jesteśmy w tym świecie czarnymi duchami, opiewamy obraz szalony goryczy.
Wyjaśnienie to bicz i ty krwawisz;
Po raz setny rozbijcie lustro świata, - wasz trud daremny. Przekroczyliśmy noc:nasz dług został spłacony
i nasze jest światło.
