A Message From the Principal:
Hello Lakewood High School Parents and Community!
It’s spring somewhere! Right?
Here is a list of “What’s Happening”:
Spring sports are under way. We have close to 300 students involved in one of our
spring sport offerings: Track, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Baseball and Softball. This
year, we are excited to use our brand new field for soccer games and practices as
well as our brand new track facility – and we get to host our first home track meet
since 2012 – don’t miss it!
Reminder: State Assessments are coming up.
The Smarter Balanced (SBA) English Language Arts Assessment for 10th
graders will be during the week of March 20th; and for upper-classmen
who have not achieved standard in May.
The Smarter Balanced Math Assessment for students in Algebra 2/Trig
and above will be during the week of April 17.
Students have begun the registration process for next year. We have several new
courses that we hope to offer (depending on enrollment and staffing) including:
American Sign Language, French, Statistics, Fabrication, Journalism, Creative
Writing, and Independent Living. I hope that students will take advantage of these
new course offerings as we attempt to provide relevant and interesting course
offerings. Schedules for next year will be available in August.
Graduation update: Graduation will be Friday, June 16th at 5pm on the Football
Field at Lakewood High School. Stay tuned for more details.
Last Friday we recognized over 250 students who achieved “Honor Roll” status
(including 97 ninth graders) and 32 “Students of the Quarter”. On March 2, we
took two busses of 9th graders that achieved a 3.0 GPA during 1st semester, and
their mentors, to visit UW and SPU for tours. We finished at Gameworks for
lunch and games. Next year, I hope we can take three busses.
We are already a ¼ of the way through second semester. Teachers will have
posted updated grades on Skyward by Wednesday, March 8th so you will have up-
to-date status of your student’s standing. Please talk to your son or daughter if they
are not performing to their ability. If there are discrepancies, advise your son or
daughter to talk to the teacher. If that doesn’t remedy the situation, feel free to
email or call the teacher to discuss the problem. Our teachers are great about
communicating and working through issues.
Don’t forget to get your tickets to attend the LHS Sports Booster Dinner and
NLIMBO Music Dinner!
Spring will surely come and it will soon be sunny and 70. Please feel free to call, write
or visit if you have any questions or suggestions.

Junior Job Shadow Our Junior class will be doing a junior job shadow this year. This job shadow will include approximately three to five
hours observing one or more people while they work at their jobs. This will give the students an opportunity to see the
kind of jobs that exist in their career pathway. Students will need to complete their pre-job shadow research that has
parent approval and school approval for the job shadow. Once the job shadow is complete they will turn in their
reflection form.
YOU’RE INVITED!
Senior presentations are extremely important to our seniors. These senior board presentations are part of our graduation requirements and our students are busy completing their projects and preparing for their presentations. This is a wonderful experience for our seniors and volunteers alike.

Students for LHS Astrobiology class and STEM
for Girls club spent the day with researchers
from the University of Washington. Lakewood
High School continued its relationship with UW
Astrobiology with an annual field trip.
Researchers explained topics in Astrobiology
that attempt to answer questions such as,
What are planets like beyond our Solar
System? How can we characterize
atmospheres around exoplanets? Through
questions, explanations, and pizza, the
students came away from the event with a
broader sense of what researchers are
working on and how they go about it. We hope
it encourages students to go boldly into the
direction of their dreams.
