Message from Program Co-Chairs

Welcome to the 12th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (IMCOM) 2018. This year venue perfectly matches the diversity of this conference by presenting its own rich diversity in picturesque scenery, history and culture. The IMCOM 2018 aims to provide a platform for promoting new visionary approaches and interdisciplinary researches. New evolving technology and novel ideas on the horizon, in the areas of information management, communication technologies and their implications for social interaction, lays the firm foundation of the conference. The conference has served as the most vital platforms for researchers and developers to exchange innovative ideas, information and significant research achievements; and provides a unique opportunity in which both technology and social science meet. Two main tracks for information processing management and communication will be held, covering both research and application works of information management, intelligent information processing, interaction management, networking /telecommunications, and social interaction. This year's conference contains 4 outstanding speeches from distinguished keynote speakers, 13 oral sessions, 3 poster sessions, and 2 short sessions. This year's review process was very competitive and rigorous, which resulted in a very strong and pivotal conference program. We received 255 submissions from many countries around the world. As a result of a neat, careful and strict review process, we selected 101 papers to be presented in the oral and poster sessions (39.6% acceptance rate). All of the accepted papers not only consist of novel ideas, new results, work in progress, and state-of-the-art techniques, but also provide us with the directions and stimulation for future research activities in the area of information management and communication technologies. We are grateful to all of the authors, reviewers, and members of the program committee for their remarkable efforts and contributions. Without their most valued help and cooperation, the tedious task of submission handling and paper reviewing could not have been successfully accomplished. We also praise the valiant effort by session chairs who accepted our request to manage sessions of the conference. We thank the General Co-Chairs, Suk-Han Lee, Lajos Hanzo, and Roslan Ismail for their great support and help. We also thank everyone who has contributed to the program – the authors, the reviewers, the program committee members and other organizing committee members for their splendid work. We wish you to have a productive and enjoyable conference in Langkawi, Malaysia.

Towards Carrier Network Virtualization and Applications Network Virtualization is the technology to enable the creation and management of logical networks on the top of shared underlying physical network. The network virtualization technology has the potentials to significantly reduce both the capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) of network by supporting multi-tenancy, flexibility, programmability, scalability, and agility. At the same time, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) have achieved remarkable advances by changing the networking paradigm during the last decade. The collaboration of SDN, NFV and network virtualization technologies can brings various potential benefits and opportunities for carrier-grade networks, not only data center networks. However, most of network virtualization solutions are deployed in data center networks for cloud platforms to provide connectivity between virtual machines. The way to achieve network virtualization for carrier-grade networks is still far away in terms of reliability, manageability, resiliency, performance, and security. Moreover, network virtualization of carrier-grade networks can be used to realize service slicing, one of the 5G network visions.

Robots as Cyberphysical Systems: The Challenges Ahead An intelligent robot is a perfect paradigm of a cyber-physical system (CPS), since its very nature is based on the seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components, including embedded sensors, processors and actuators in order to sense and interact with the physical world. In my speech I will address some of the challenges for robots considered as CPS, such as adaptability, autonomy, functionality, resiliency, and safety, with emphasis on the physical interaction with the environment. As test cases I will consider robots as personal assistants, along with robots in online shopping warehouses, as an example towards the 4th industrial revolution, the so-called Industry 4.0, with some lessons learned from our recent participation in the Amazon Robotics Challenge 2017 that took place in Nagoya in July 2017. I will also discuss some implications in terms of the interactions of information processing, communication and control of physical processes, with especial emphasis on the difficulties that dealing with open-ended physical entities can bring.

Data Science in Science As data (especially big data) become the new oil, data science has recently attracted intensive and growing attention from industry, government, and academia. Data science focuses on deriving valuable knowledge from (raw) data in an efficient and intelligent manner, with the purpose of prediction, exploration, understanding, and/or intervention. It encompasses the set of methods and tools that enable data-driven activities in business, government, and scientific research. In particular, data science is playing an increasingly important role in scientific research. One evidence is the so-called fourth paradigm of science, which features data-intensive scientific discovery. Another is the emergence of scholarly big data. Recent years have witnessed the exponential growth of scholarly data in all scientific disciplines. The rapid rise of big scholarly data brings about new issues and challenges with respect to e.g. information retrieval, data management and analysis. Data science in science that exploits scholarly big data enables us to better understand the nature of science, giving rise to a lot of potentials on addressing the challenges. This talk will look into recent advances in this field, and discuss relevant opportunities and challenges.

Ontology and What It Has to Do with Information Retrieval The discipline of philosophy define ontology as the science of “what is”, the kinds of structures of objects, properties, events, processes and relations in every area of reality. From the perspective of computing, an ontology is an engineering artefact which is constituted by a specific vocabulary used to describe a certain reality, plus a set of explicit assumptions regarding the intended meaning of the vocabulary. Thus, an ontology describes a formal specification of a certain domain, which is a formally shared understanding of a domain of interest that are machine manipulable. Ontologies have been applied in many knowledge-based applications such as decision support systems, expert systems and question-answering systems. Information retrieval (IR) is finding material (usually documents) of an unstructured nature (usually text) that satisfies an information need from within large collections (usually stored on computers). In contrast to ontology-based systems, IR systems rely on the bag-of-word representation approach to retrieve documents. As such, the contextual and semantic meaning of terms as they appear in the documents are lost. Various efforts have been put forward in order to improve the retrieval performance of existing IR systems, such as: feature-based models, term dependence models and entity-based models. In this talk, we describe the use of ontology to enhance the retrieval performance of IR systems. We will first review various applications of ontology to support or enhance semantic IR. We will then show some of the research that we have or currently embarked on ontology-based information retrieval, namely: semantic digital library; crime news retrieval and multimodal ontology retrieval. We then conclude the talk with challenges and future research work in the area.

| From International Airport to Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi |

Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa is located approx. 7.2 kilometer from Langkawi International Airport. The journey

from the airport to the resort takes approximately 11 minutes by car. From airport you can arrive at the resort by

taxi.

Regular Taxi (Airport ->Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa )

We recommend this way to go to the conference venue, as this is much

cheaper. Taxis are the most convenient and popular mode of public transport

in Langkawi. However they also turn out to be quite expensive if you plan to

use the taxi service frequently. The taxis in Langkawi do not run on meters.

There are fixed fares between places. The taxi's drivers all seem to know them

by heart and will tell you the fare immediately once you tell them where you

want to go.

Travel Information – About Malaysia & Langkawi -

| About Malaysia| Malaysia is a beautiful and diverse country with many highlights. The many different regions, each with their own characteristic features, make this country the perfect destination for tourists. However, Malaysia does not entirely depend on tourism. This country's economy has been going strong for years. On the contrary to what some people (still) believe, Malaysia is not a third world country. The country has developed itself enormously in the past 50 years and this is clearly noticeable when visiting it. Especially in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, you will see many modern buildings, a modern light rail transit system, many luxurious shopping malls and countless expensive cars on the roads. Life outside of the capital is often less developed; but even there the times of people only being able to afford a motorcycle are long gone.

| About Langkawi| Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah), is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On 15 July 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Langkawi Island with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Tuba Island. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island.

| Currency Exchange | Exchanging cash in Malaysia is EASY. FOREX (FOReign EXchange) booths are very common and clearly post their daily exchange rates on an electronic notice board. There are lots of money changers in Malaysia, especially in areas popular with tourist. If you are happy with the rate you will convert your currency for Ringgits. They work exactly as a bank or Travel exchange. Money changers will usually give a better rate than Bureau deChange or banks. The exchange rate is valued at USD1 = RM4.27. Notes are available in RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50, and RM100 denominations, while coins are issued in 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen (cents) denominations.

You can use your electric appliances in Malaysia, if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 - 240 V (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). Travel Information – General Information -

| Tipping & Tax | Tipping is not required, and a service charge is usually included in the price. You can tip RM 2-10 per bag to the porter, RM 2-10 for room service and RM 2-10 per day for the housekeeper, if you want. However, this is not expected, nor required. Some hotels, mostly higher end, will encourage tipping for the porter (bellhop) and for room service.

| Shopping | Pristine beaches and vast mountains aside, Langkawi’s duty-free shopping is the next best reason to visit the tropical island. With a large concentration of duty-free stores that stock in-demand items ranging from cigarettes, liquor and chocolates to luggage, sports shoes, perfumes, and cooking utensils, Langkawi is undoubtedly a shopper’s paradise. Handmade souvenirs and apparels are aplenty in this island as well, where visitors can get authentic batik and songket prints at attractive prices. For those who enjoy bargain-hunting, Langkawi hosts a night market which is held at different locations each day of the week. There are designated stores, shopping centers and malls that are duty free, especially in Kuah town which is the commercial hub of Langkawi. The next best place for shopping is Pantai Cenang which is the favorite place for most tourists because of its lovely beach and so many restaurants

| To/From the Airport | Langkawi International Airport is an airport in Padang Matsirat, Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. The airport is located about 25-minutes' drive from Kuah Town.

| Public Transport | Taxis are available in abundance and they are the most popular and convenient transport in the island. However, they are quite expensive compared to the other modes. A 15 minutes ride on a taxi can cost you RM18. But you can get taxis almost everywhere in the island. Car rental is another great option if you know driving and can manage Left Hand Drive. If you plan to tour around the island, a car rental can be much more economical than a taxi. Driving in Langkawi is also easy and the roads are scarcely populated. You can rent two wheelers in the island. Scooters and motorbikes usually come for RM25-40 a day depending on number of days you are renting whereas a bicycle rental would be about RM15 a day. You are required to wear a helmet by law and it is provided by the rental agency. You will also need a valid two wheeler license for renting scooters, motorbikes and even mopeds. Your own country's license should be fine. | Dress Code |

In keeping with many Muslim countries you will find that people in the capital city and other major towns are used to foreigners, and are therefore likely to be more tolerant and more liberal. Langkawi is casual all the way and flip flops with beachwear and a sarong is the norm. However, there are some smart restaurants worth dressing up for. Rain is frequent, so lightweight clothes will also dry more quickly. T-shirts and shorts are perfectly acceptable, but avoid skimpy or revealing clothes or you will get unwanted attention. Hotels, restaurants and shopping malls are usually air conditioned and at times this can be pretty fierce, so be sure to carry a sweater or pashmina in your bag.

Travel Information – Foods -

| Nasi Tomato | Nasi tomato, or tomato rice, is made using a combination of tomato paste, coconut milk, various spices, garlic, onion, and sugar. This sweet-sour rice dish can be paired with a wide range of toppings such as fried chicken or fish and raw vegetables but we highly recommend beef rendang (a dry coconut milk-based curry), chickpea curry, and acar nenas (pineapple and peanut salad)

| Ikan Bakar | Literally means “grilled fish”, Langkawi offers arguably the best ones due to t its abundant supply of fresh seafood. The fish is marinated in a blend of sambal, turmeric, chilli, belacan, and galangal before it’s wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled over a charcoal stove. Due to its spicy flavor, a plate of steamed rice goes perfectly with ikan bakar.

|Nasi Campur| “Nasi” means rice, and “campur” means mix in Malay. The dish is literally a mix of stuff with rice. Some of the items on big-size platters can be chicken, tofu, vegetable soup, and many more. Nasi campur is one of the most common food for the locals in Langkawi.

| Pajeri Nenas | Literally means “Pineapple curry”, pajeri nenas is ideal for vegetarian diners looking to sample traditional Malay-style curry. This sweet-sour dish is typically served during lunch at local Malay restaurants in Langkawi. Consisting chunks of sweet pineapple in a coconut-based curry, this dish is best paired with a plate of white rice, okra, cucumber, and eggplants.

| Seki Mackerel | Nasi lemak, one of Malaysia’s signature Malay dishes, can be enjoyed at any time of the day. It’s a hearty dish of coconut-flavoured rice, served with hard-boiled egg, fried peanuts, anchovies, and a spicy shrimp-based sauce. Readily available everywhere in Langkawi, a plate of nasi lemak can fetch a hefty price tag at five-star resorts while night markets and roadside stalls sell it prewrapped in banana leaf for as low as RM1.50. You can even have your nasi lemak topped with curried meat or fried chicken at additional prices.

| Satay | Satay is a popular Malaysian snack that’s basically pieces of skewered meat marinated overnight before barbecued over a charcoal fire. The marinade is made with lemongrass, turmeric, coriander, shallots, garlic chilli, and honey, resulting in a slightly sweet yet savoury flavour. Available in chicken, beef, or lamb, satay is served with peanut-based sauce, raw cucumber slices, and rice cubes.

Travel Information – Beverages -

| Wine Club | Wines are quite popular in Langkawi. Some of the most famous wines preferred here are Martini Asti, FontanaFredda Asti, Moscato dAsti, Nivole Moscato dAsti , and First Frost (best). First Frost is an expensive (even in duty free) and sweet white wine. It is highly recommended to bring your own wine if you plan to enjoy wine on the beach. ZON is one of the biggest duty free shops in Cenang, and they do have quite the wine, and spirits collection. Santa Helena Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are from Central Valley Chile, a bulk production area for wine in Chile. These type of bottles are made in mass quantity and sold at low prices in order to seek high turnover, since these bottles most likely won't stand the test of time.

| Coffee with a tiger | Located in the heart of the Oriental Village, Bolaven Cafes Langkawi (bolavencafes.my) claims to have the best coffee on the island. It also gives you the chance to get up close and personal with a Malayan tiger. Raised in captivity, Zanah can be found taking a dip in the small pool or lazing around the enclosure. If you're lucky, she will come right up to the glass window as you sip your coffee. There are just 500 Malayan tigers left in the wild,so don't miss seeing this magnificent creature. The coffee is pretty good, too.

| Juice Works | Juice Works Malaysia provides hand crafted fresh fruit juices and healthy smoothies using the freshest and most natural ingredients. With over 30 flavors to choose from, it is impossible to not fall in love with one of the awesome creations. If not, you can get creative with Juice Baristas and come up with your own unique combo. Juice Baristas are always happy to accommodate your every needs. Juice Works juice stores can be found in major malls in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

| Carlsberg Beer | Kuah is a well-known destination in Kuah town. It is more like a commercial center and shopping zone where you can get alcoholic drinks and chocolates with duty tax free. A can of Carlsberg beer is just RM1.6, when it is about RM 6.0 at stores near you. Various alcoholic liquors are sold at quite competitive cost. Probably, the prices may be cheaper than KLIA.

Foods

| Pantai Cenang for cocktails and drinks| Pantai Cenang is the busiest beach town on Langkawi Island, where you can find a diverse mix of cafes and restaurants, as well as souvenir shops, and duty-free outlets along its picturesque beach strip. If there is one happening place in the whole of Langkawi, then it must be Pantai Cenang. There is no other place in the island which has so many bars and pubs lined up in a row along the road that passes by the beach.

For centuries, people have been harnessing the naturally hot steam for cooking food. The naturally mineral-laden steam is also said to bring out the true flavors of the food.
