J'aimerais vous presenter un peu cette nouvel le formule qu'utilisera d l'avenir le Bulletin de 17Association pour 1 ' Anthropol ogie Physique au Canada. Comme vous 1 ' avez remarque, le Bulletin sera entierement bilingue, 1 e frangais se trouvant d gauche, aux pages paires, et l'anglais d droite, aux pages irnpaires. Voild une excel 1 ente occasion de perfectionner votre langue seconde.. . Cependant, s'il m'est facile de traduire de 1 'angl ais au f ran~ais, 1 ' inverse n'est pas n&cessairement vrai: vous excuserez donc les nombreuses erreurs que comporteront mes textes anglais. J'espere avoir de l'aide en ce sens pour les autres parutions.

A f in de bien repondre aux besoins d'inforrnations des membres de l'association, le bulletin paraitra trois fois par ann&e. La premiere parution sera surtout consacrge au proces verbal de la derniere reunion, af in que ceux qui n'ont pas pu se rendre au colloque puissent etre inform&; on y +era aussi une premiere annonce des conditions du congres d venir; elle devrait se faire entre ,anvier et avril. La seconde, en deibut d'Btt2, vous informera des aspects techniques du colloque de l'automne. La derniere parution se +era un mois avant le colloque, et vous avisera des derniers dgtails de son organisation.

J'invite cordialement tous les membres d publier, par l'intermgdiaire du Bulletin, des lettres d'apinisns, ou de transmettre aux autres.membres toutes les infarmations qui pourraient @tre pertinentes. Introduction

C'est la troisieme fois que 17Universit& de Montreal organise un colloque annuel de notre association. Alors que nous avions choisi la formule "Ste-Adele" la premiere fois, d 17ext&rieur de Montr&al, nous avons retenu l'option "Montr&al centre-ville" la seconde, afin de permettre de faire un peu de tourisme citadin. Cette annee, nous avons opte pour une formule mixte: une journee Montreal, et trois jours d la campaqne, en Estrie, d la base de plein air Jouvence. On trouvera en page 12 plus d'informations sur ce centre de vacances familiales qui n'a rien d envier aux Clubs Plediterrannee.

Nous avons aussi voulu introduire un certain nombre de nouveaut&s dans 1"organisation de ce colloque. En plus des t h@mes tradi tionnels (primatologie, ost&ologie, paleontologic, etc), nous aJoutons cette annee un nouveau theme, qui sera sous la responsabilitb d7Andrew Petto: la methodologie. Andrew nous prgsente d'ai 1 leurs lui-meme, en page 16, un apergu de ce qu' i 1 aimerait organiser.

De plus, afin de partager un peu mieux les taclhes d'organisation, chaque theme aura cette annee son propre organisateur. Pour participer au congres, i l faut donc vous i nscr i re aupres de mai , et pour prgsenter une communication, vous devez vous adresser au responsable du theme que vous avez choisi, et lui faire parvenir un r&sum& de votre communication. Nous souhaitons publier tous ces r&sum@s dans les deux lanques, et nous ferons nous-rnPmes les traductions.

Un symposium methodolqjique en 1986 un defi au:.: membres

Dans les dernieres decades, i l s'est produit plusieurs fois qu'une "nouvel le" anthropologie physique apparaisse en Amkrique du nord. Pour certains, la plus nouvelle des nouvelles anthropologies physique n'est qu'une tyrannie de statistiques et de manipulations d'ordinateurs, qui peut cacher d' importantes variations intra-populationnel les. Four d'autres, nos modeles heuristiques ne sont que des histoi res trop simples, tautologiques ou, encore pis, i nadequates.

Nous proposons un symposium qui aurai t pour ob jectif d'examiner ces questions m&thodologiques lor5 de notre colloque CAFA/kAPC de 1986. Nais bien plus qu'une invitation d sournettre des propositions, nous mettons les membres au defi de pouvoir examiner de fagon critique les mgthodes et 1 s modeles utilises dans la pratique de l'anthropologie physique.

Ce ne sont pas les informations sur lesquelles nous travaillons qui nous distinguent des autres chercheurs en bialoqie humaine ou en &volution. Plusieurs disciplines se partagent ces donnges. Cependant, notre travail est oriente vers ce que d'autres disciplines ne considerent etre que l'arrigre-plan, d la fois intriguant et penetrant, de leur travail. Notre principal int&ret est l'etude de la place de l'@tre humain dans la nature, sa relation avec son environnement, et son &volution en tant que participant i3 cet environnement. Nous nous demandons comment les schhes et les divers processus observ&s dans l3adaptation humaine, par exemple, peuvent constituer des indices importants dans la compr&hension de notre heritage, Nos mgthodes de recherche doivent reflkter cette perspective, et 1 es rkponses que nous cherchons obtenir de nos donnees doivent se prgsenter en ces termes.

Several t imes i n t he l a s t four decades a "new" phys ica l anthropology has emerged i n North America. To some, t he newest new phys ica l anthropology i s a ty ranny o f s t a t i s t i c s and computer manipulat ion t h a t masks important w i th in-popul a t i o n va r i a t i on . Others regard our h e u r i s t i c model s as too-s i mpl e " just -so" s t o r i e s , i nhe ren t l y t a u t o l o g i c a l , o r worse, i r r e l e v a n t .

We a re proposing a symposium f o r t h e 1986 CQPA meetings t o examine methodaloqical issues. But more than j u s t an i n v i t a t i o n t o submit proposal5, we are i s s u i n g a chal lenge t o our members t o examine c r i t i c a l l y t he methods and models used i n t h e p r a c t i c e o f phys ica l anthropology.

Physical an th ropo log i s t s a re no t d i s t i nqu ished from other researchers concerned w i t h human b io logy and evo lu t i on by our data. These data a re shared by many d i s c i p l i n e s . J'aimerais prof i ter de cette occasion pour informer les membres de CGF'A/GAF'C de recents dPveloppements en ce domai ne aux Etats-Uni s. Br ievement, un mouvemen t politique actif fait des pressions pour la rP-inhumation globale des restes osseux, mouvement diriqe par Jan Harnmil, directeur de 1'American Indians Against Desecration I D . 1 . Ce qroupe s'est exprime aauprks de la Chambre des Representants amer icaine (,uillet 1?€35), a suscitP de l'inter@t pour leurs ob,ectifs chez d'autres groupements amgrindiens, et Hammil a participP act symposium AAA organist2 par des anthropaloques favorables A cette these de la rP-inhumation. Les pressions de ce groupe en faveur d~ la remise en terre des collections osseccses sont particulierement fortes envers la Smithsonian Institution.

La situation est prPoccupante pour les canadiens pour d e w raisons. 1 1 Les professionnels de 1 a recherche en ost&ologie doi vent avoir a c c k aux collections amrlricaines, car les amerindiens prghistoriques traversaient 1 a f rontiere alors non existante: 2 ) les sp&cialistes canadiens sont en attente face au moratoire concernant la question du sort des restes humains (Fox, 1985). I1 s'agit d'un echec de notre part, dans 17explication de l'importance pour la prghistoire de l'etude de5 restes humains. En ef f et, les archeologues, politiciens et planificateurs ne croient pas que les avantages d&coulant de l'gtude des restes humains peuvent contrebalancer les inconvenients repr&sent&s par les revendications de certain5 groupes de pression. Dans ce climat intellectuel, la norme de la ri2-inhumation risque d'gtre acceptee facilement. L'Association Canadienne d'Arzh&olagie, par contre, a adopt& d l'unanimit& une r&solution dgplorant la politique de la r@-inhumation A scjn conqres annuel de 1982.

I am a member o f the Committee on the Preservation of Human Remains, an ad hoc committee of the Pal eopathology Association. I would like to take this opportunity to inform the CAPA membership of recent developments in the United States. Briefly, there is an active political movement lobbying for wholesale reburial spurred by the activities of Ms. Jan Hammil, Director of fimerican Indians Against Desacration (A. I .D. ) . This group has made presentations to the U.S. House of Representatives (July, 1985). has stimulated concern about the issue among other Native American groups, and Hammi 1 was a discu.ssant at a AAA symposium organized by anthropologists friendly to the reburial issue. Pressure from this group on the Smithsonian Institution to rebury collections is specially strong.

This situation is worrisome to Canadian scholars for two reasons: 1 ) Prof essionnals in skeletal biology research require access to U.S. bones, since prehistoric aboriginals "crossed the border" freely, and 2 ) much of Canada is in a state of temporary tending toward permanent moratorium regarding the purposeful excavation of skeletal remains (Fox 1985). This implies a general failure on our part to convey the importance of skeletal study to prehistory. That is, it looks like Canadian archeologists, planners and politicians do not see the benefits derived from skeletal studies as worth the unpleasantness of confronting special interest groups. Given this intellectual climate, it would not take much of a confrontation to achieve reburial. (The Can. Archeological Association did, however, unanimously pass a resolution deploring skeletal reburial at their 1982 annual meeting).

Canadian physical anthropol oqi sts can i nf 1 uence this situation, through communication and education. We can inform the general public and Nat i ve Amer i cans in particular o f how valuable skeletal remains can be in reconstructing the history of people who have no history. We can remind people of the potential for medical insights into disease susceptability through paleopathology. We can
