• Menghitung adalah mengikut tertib berikut:• (i) rote counting - the words in the right
order;
• (ii) rational counting - count how many and count out a subset;
• (iii) cardination - “how many” (last number name gives this);
• (iv) ordination - aspect of number which gives order;
• (v) numerical comparison/order - using 1-1 to see which has more;

• (vi) conservation - number is the same when nothing added/taken away;

• (ix) separation - into those that have been counted and those yet to be counted;
• (x) subbitisation - counting by “seeing” (numbers 2 to 5); and
• (xi) adding (subtracting) - counting by subbitising and adding the subbitised groups.

Untuk membolehkan kanak-kanak menghitung,kanak-kanak perlu memahami bahawa setiap objek hanya dikira sekali sahaja (partitioning). Melabel objek atau ‘tagging’ hanya digunakan sekali

Prinsip abstrakTahu objek (maujud atau imaginasi) boleh
dihitung. Jika kanak-kanak belum dapat menghayati kaedah menhitung boleh digunakan untuk mewakili nombor maka mereka dikatakan belum menguasai konsep abstrak.

• Prinsip ketidak tertiban (The order-irrelevance principle)
• Berkaitan dengan melabel dan menamakan objek dalam set (nombor kardinal) tanpa memperdulikan (mengira) sama ada dihitung secara tertib atau tidak).

Counting strategies Counting on
Child can start at any number and begin counting 6, 7, 8, 9
Counting back Child gives correct names as they count backwards

Skip counting Instead of counting by 1s, the child can count by 2s,
5s, 10s e.g. 5, 10 , 15, 20 ...– A good counter can do all this.– A 100s board or chart helps children develop these
strategies.– Whole class or group counting helps the less confident child
too.
