Simply perfect!

Mr Mao Jia (Head of International Production, TSM), Mr Zhang Chao (Producer, TSM), Mr Jiao Tao Hua (Writer) and Camille Chen (Executive Creative Director, LMG) formed the Pilbara recce team and boarded the morning flight from Perth to Broome. Upon arrival in Broome, Willie Creek Pearls staff Kaleena Brammer welcomed the delegation. After a quick lunch, the team boarded the helicopter and flew to Willie Creek farm. The stunning patterns of the tidal estuary, breathtaking colours and amazing wildlife were truly a photographer’s dream from the air.

Back to Broome, the team visited some of the iconic sites, including Sunset Picture (the oldest outdoor cinema) and Japanese/Chinese cemetery to have a deeper understanding of the rich history of the pearling city. The team then enjoyed a sunset camel ride (an icon of Broome) on the beautiful Cable Beach looking out over the Indian Ocean.

The team later met with Bart Pigram (Narlijia Experiences Broome) and his uncle, Uncle Jimmy. Over dinner, Bart and Uncle Jimmy shared many stories of being part of the large Pigram-Puertollano family that belongs to a long tradition of pearling workers and musicians. Their heritage brought many rich and fascinating stories of life around the beautiful turquoise waters of Roebuck Bay in Broome.

DAY 9 (04/03) PORT HEDL AND

5AM start, Don Bacon (from Amazing Kimberley Tours & Charter) joined the team. The team departed from Broome in the darkness and headed towards Port Hedland.

Along the way (following the National Highway 1 skirting the “Great Sandy Desert”, the classic Outback red was heavy all around due to the iron-rich character of the earth here. Over the six hours road trip, the team stopped by the iconic Sandfire Roadhouse and Pardoo Roadhouse & Tavern.

Upon arrival in Port Hedland, the team was greeted by Camilo Blanco (Mayor of Town of Port Hedland) and Phillip Smeeton (local guide). The team enjoyed a takeaway Chinese meal at Mayor Blanco’s office and a lively discussion about the Pilbara region and its rich history in mining.

In the afternoon, the team visited Port Hedland Seafarers Centre and met with Chris Towsey (Operation Manager). The group traveled around the Port of Port Hedland to view operations of the Port Infrastructure and saw workers carrying out their work. Afterwards, the team further toured around Port Hedland to view the town facilities and typical residential properties of local workers and mining camp that provides accommodation for FIFO (fly in fly out) workers. The team also met with local aboriginal communities. Afterwards, the team enjoyed a drink at the well-down Pier Hotel (where local workers have a drink after work) and had dinner at The Esplanade Hotel.

DAY 10 (05/03) KARIJINI

The team had another early start, leaving Port Hedland at 6am. After four hours drive along the Pilbara terrain (including a stopover at Auski Roadhouse), the team arrived at the Karijini National Park and was welcomed by the ranger Daniel Peterson.

Covering 627,422 hectares just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Hamersley Range, Karijini National Park is Western Australia’s second largest park. Under the guidance of Ranger Dan, the team visited some of the most spectacular sites in the park, including Dales Gorge, Fortescue Falls, Weano Gorge and Oxers Lookout.

Contrast with a classic blue Pilbara sky and those ancient greens trees, the sheer expanse of Karijini is breathtaking and the landscape looked as if it hasn’t changed much since the dinosaurs roamed it.

The team then further tracked to Karijini Eco Retreat, an environmentally friendly accommodation and restaurant facility nestled in the pristine bushland at Joffre Gorge - in the heart of the world-class Karijini National Park. Alongside the outback bush camping experience, the multi-award-winning Karijini Eco Retreat is the first and only facility to offer comfortable glamping accommodation in the Park!

Along with the gorges and desert landscapes, the night sky was one of the Pilbara’s great natural features that was treasured by the team. The full Milky Way was just impossibly beautiful and unforgettable.

The outback journey continued as the team bade farewell to Karijini National Park and headed towards the mining town Tom Price.

Just 5 minutes drive out of Tom Price, our four-wheel drive took us to Mount Nameless, the highest accessible mountain by four-wheel drive vehicle in Western Australia. The team was rewarded of a spectacular mountain view and a stunning outlook over Tom Price Mine Site and township.

After a short lunch break, the team then headed to nearby mining town Paraburdoo (which was built to support Hamersley Iron’s (now Rio Tinto) local iron ore mining operations). The evening flight brought the team back to Perth and concluded the four-day-long Pilbara recce trip.
