Decorated by jewelling stars, the night sky is never monotonous in spite of its darkness. The clear starry sky in early autumn makes this season the best one in a year for star-gazing. Although there is no exceptionally bright star in the sky, the constellations in autumn tell the story of a heroic rescue of a beautiful princess - the brave Perseus saved Princess Andromeda, the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, by turning the sea monster Cetus into stone with the head cut from the snaky-haired succubus Medusa.

The new Sky Show “Astronomyths” will lead you into a journey through ancient and modern times, starting with an introduction to some ancient Greek myths about constellations in autumn. Also mentioned is the current use of modern space probes and telescopes in search of celestial bodies in deep space. We will explore the birth of black holes, discover extra-solar planets in the so-called “habitable” zone, as well as appreciate spectacular nebulae, clusters and galaxies, including the most distant one that can be viewed with naked eyes by humans.

節。雖然秋季的星空沒有特別明顯的亮星，但秋季的星座卻在夜空中訴說着一個英雄救美的神話故事

─ 勇敢的英仙座柏爾修斯擊殺蛇髮女妖梅杜莎後，再用她的頭顱將鯨魚座的海怪變成石頭，拯救了仙

王座和仙后座的女兒，即仙女座的安德洛墨達公主。

全新天象節目「星河傳說」將會帶你穿梭古今，由細說古希臘星座傳說開始，讓大家認識一些秋季星座

的起源，以至介紹現代的太空探測器和望遠鏡，在尋找隱藏於星空中的深空天體方面的一些貢獻。我們

會探索黑洞的誕生、發現處於適居帶的系外行星、欣賞壯觀的星雲、星團，以及人類肉眼可以觀測到的

最遙遠星系。

自古以來，人類都渴望能夠翱翔於天際間。二十世紀初美國人萊特兄弟成功完成首次載人動力飛行，實

現了人類多年來的夢想。在往後的百多年間，航空業的發展一日千里。

踏入二十一世紀，飛機的設計在受惠於先進科技之下出現了飛躍的進步。歐洲空中巴士公司的A380客

機是目前載客量最大的客機，最多可容納853位乘客。美國波音公司的787夢幻客機的主要結構中，有

一半是由堅硬而輕巧的複合材料建造，以達致更佳的能源效益。

在全天域電影《鐵鳥夢飛翔》中，觀眾不但可以欣賞不同年代的飛機設計，更可緊隨首席試飛員為波音

787客機進行試飛，目睹新一代鐵鳥的研製過程。

Flying in the sky has been a dream of all mankind since ancient times. This universal dream at all times was fulfilled by two Americans, the Wright Brothers, who successfully made the first manned, powered flight in early 20th century. Since then, the aviation industry has experienced tremendous development for more than one hundred years.

Having entered the 21st century, the industry has a great leap forward in respect of aircraft design being benefited by advanced science and technology. The European Airbus A380 is currently the largest airliner with a maximum carrying capacity of 853 passengers. For the U.S. Boeing 787 Dreamliner, half of its main structure is made by strong and lightweight composite materials for enhanced energy efficiency.

The Omnimax film “Legends of Flight” will not only show the audience aircraft designs of different eras but also bring them to have a flight test of Boeing 787 with a chief test pilot, witnessing the development process of this iron bird of a new generation.

過去二十年，美國太空總署的哈勃太空望遠鏡一次又一次為人類揭開宇宙的神秘面紗。

透過拍攝所得清晰而細緻的照片，哈勃望遠鏡令科學家得以見證恆星的誕生與死亡、發現不知名的遙遠

星系、找到巨大星系中心的黑洞、探測黑暗能量、了解行星形成的過程，以及準確計算宇宙的年齡等。

全天域電影「巨眼探穹蒼」帶領我們參與在2009年5月的一次艱巨但極富意義的太空任務－為哈勃望

遠鏡進行最後一次維修和升級工作。影片會介紹太空人在大型水池內接受訓練，模擬在太空替望遠鏡進

行維修的情況，因為他們在這次任務中必須成功安裝和更新數件儀器，只有這樣才可使望遠鏡繼續運作

至超越2014年。觀眾亦會一起見證穿梭機升空的震撼時刻，以及仿如置身現場般近距離觀看太空人的

工作情況。

Time after time, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has unveiled the mystery of the Universe for humans since its launch two decades ago.

Based on the clear and detailed pictures captured by Hubble, scientists can witness the birth and death of stars, discover distant galaxies with names unknown, locate black holes at the centre of large galaxies, detect dark energy, understand the process of planet formation and accurately calculate the age of the universe, etc.

Omnimax Show “Hubble” leads the audiences to participate in a difficult but very meaningful space mission held in May 2009 for maintenance and upgrading of this space telescope for the last time. The film discloses the training of astronauts in a large neutral buoyancy tank to simulate the working environment of the telescope in space. Successful completion of this mission, which included installation and updating of some instruments, was necessary if the telescope was to continue operating beyond 2014. Viewers will also witness the shocking moment of the shuttle’s lift-off and closely watch the astronauts working in space as if they were at the scene.

Sea Rex: Journey To A Prehistoric World古海龍王

約在二億年前，當恐龍正雄踞着地球的陸地時，海洋裏亦出現了大量海生爬行動物，牠們主宰了當時的

海洋世界，就像遠古的海中王者。

遠古時代的海生爬行動物中，有三種因着本身具備獨特之處，所以都曾在海洋裏稱霸一時。魚龍因擁有

巨大而且能抵受強大水壓的眼睛，令牠們能在深海裏輕易地找到獵物。蛇頸龍一如其名，擁有相對較

長的脖子，牠們慣於獨來獨往，是那時期海洋裏最兇悍的食肉動物之一。滄龍就像海洋裏的巨型蜥蜴，

以蛇一樣的方式游動，其兇猛程度比鯊魚還要厲害。這些海生爬行動物統治中生代的海底世界超過一億

年。

全天域電影《古海龍王》帶我們回到二億年前遠古時代的海洋，探索這些巨型海生爬行動物如何主宰中

生代時期的海洋世界，並潛入深海與這些巨獸作近距離接觸。影片透過先進的動畫技術，將當時千奇百

怪的生物一一活現眼前，讓我們對這逝去的年代有更深入的認識。

At the time dinosaurs ruled the land on Earth around 200 million years ago, a large number of marine reptiles co-existed in the seas and oceans as if they were kings dominating the sea world in the ancient times.

In time immemorial, three different groups among the marine reptiles ruled the world’s oceans one after the other because of their unique strengths. Having huge eyes that could withstand extreme water pressure, ichthyosaurs were able to make out their prey in the darkness of great depths easily. Plesiosaurs had four strong limbs and relatively long necks. They lived alone and were among the most ferocious predators in the oceans at that time. With an appearance like giant sea lizards, mosasaurs swam by undulating like a snake, and were even more ferocious than sharks. These marine reptiles reigned over the marine world for more than 100 million years in Mesozoic.

The Omnimax Show “Sea Rex: Journey To A Prehistoric World” takes us back to the ancient oceans 200 million years ago, exploring the reign of these giant marine reptiles in the world’s oceans of Mesozoic era, and having close contact with these enormous creatures. Advanced animation technology makes it possible to revitalise such grotesque marine reptiles, facilitating us to have a better understanding of the remote antiquity.

The audiences of the School Show “Secret of the Cardboard Rocket” will join two children and a talking astronomy book on a magical journey by travelling on a cardboard rocket throughout the Solar System.

During the tour, they will visit the Sun, the eight planets and Pluto; land on Venus, Mars and Pluto; fly through the Great Red Spot on Jupiter; and view the Sun and other planets from vantage points.

There are totally 59 groups of exhibits in the two Exhibition Halls of the Hong Kong Space Museum. The exhibits, predominantly interactive, enable visitors to learn through a series of entertaining as well as educational experiences. The story begins around 250 million years ago when the planet’s hypothetical landmass Pangea split, unleashing massive climatic powers across the globe. 愛因斯坦的理論再一次得到證實─地球周圍確實

存在著時空漩渦，其形狀與他的引力理論所預測

的完全符合。

美國太空總署在發布「引力探測器-B」(GP-B)任

務的探測成果時，公布了上述結果。

「引力探測器-B」任務的首席科學家，史丹福大

學的物理學家法蘭西斯‧艾佛列特表示：「地球

四周所存在的時空扭曲，與廣義相對論的預測完

全一致。」

而美國華盛頓大學聖路易分校的克利福德‧韋爾

表示：「這是個劃時代的發現。」韋爾是研究相

對論的專家，目前擔任美國國家研究局轄下一個

獨立委員會的主席。這委員會在1998年由美國

太空總署成立，主要監察和評估引力探測器-B任

務。他預言：「有一天，這項任務會作為經典實

驗寫進物理學教科書中。」

根據愛因斯坦的相對論，空間和時間相互交織，

形成稱為「時空」的四維結構。地球的質量會在

這種結構上產生「凹陷」，就像一個大個子坐在

彈床，令彈床下陷一樣。愛因斯坦指出，引力只

是物體沿著被時空凹陷扭曲了的軌跡運動的結

實驗在原理上非常簡單。

將一個陀螺儀送上環繞地球的軌道，先令其自轉

軸指向某顆遙遠的恆星作為固定的參照點。在沒

有任何外力作用下，陀螺儀的轉軸方向理應鎖定

這顆恆星，但如果空間是扭曲的，那麼陀螺儀的

指向就會隨時間推移而改變。透過觀測這種轉

變，就能測量時空彎曲的幅度。

說起來好像輕而易舉，但做起來卻難若登天。

首先，引力探測器-B中的4個陀螺儀是人類迄今所

製造出最完美的球體。它們有如乒乓球般大，直

徑約4厘米，由熔凝石英及矽製成。它的任何一條

半徑，與完美的球體相比，誤差都不會超過40層

原子的厚度。否則，即使沒有相對論效應，陀螺

儀的自轉軸仍會擺動，造成誤差。

根據計算，圍繞地球的時空扭曲會令陀螺儀的自

轉軸每年漂移0.041角秒。1角秒等於1/3600度。

為了測量出這樣微小的改變，引力探測器-B的儀

器必須達到0.0005角秒的精度，相當於要測量一

張放在160公里遠處的紙的厚度。

對此，韋爾說：「引力探測器-B的研究人員不得

不發明嶄新的技術來滿足這種苛刻的要求。」

他們創製了「消大氣阻力」衛星─衛星即使擦過

地球的外層大氣，其內的陀螺儀仍不會受到影

響。他們還發現如何防止地球磁場穿透衛星，影

響儀器的精確度；他們甚至開發出一種無須接觸

陀螺儀仍能測量其轉速及指向的儀器。

進行這項空前的實驗是莫大的挑戰。不過，經過

蒐集整年的數據及進行歷時近5年的數據分析後，

負責引力探測器-B任務的科學家似乎離成功不遠

矣。

艾佛列特說：「我們測量到測地線進動值為

6 . 6 0 0 ± 0 . 0 1 7 角秒，參考系拖曳效應值為

0.039±0.007角秒。」

陀螺儀旋轉軸的指向變化，由時空凹陷 (源自地球

的靜止質量) 所引起的，我們稱之為「測地線進

動」；而由地球自轉所引致的，就稱為「參考系

拖曳效應」。這兩組數據與愛因斯坦的理論預測

非常吻合。

韋爾說：「這簡直是壯舉，我們實在感到驚異!」

引力探測器-B的測量結果，令物理學家對愛因斯

坦理論所作的預測更有信心。這些預測縱使稀奇

古怪，但實驗表明，愛因斯坦確是對的。而且，

這些時空漩渦在宇宙的其他角落，例如中子星、

黑洞和活躍星系核心的周圍同樣存在，而且規模

更大、更加激烈。

韋爾說：「黑洞四周的時空高度扭曲，如果你嘗

試在那裏轉動陀螺，它不會溫和地偏轉，而是會

劇烈晃動，甚至整個倒轉過來。」

在雙黑洞系統中，兩個黑洞不但互繞，黑洞本身

也在自轉，猶如一個旋轉中的陀螺。想像一下，

一對相互繞動、自轉、晃動甚至翻轉的

黑洞吧!這正是愛因斯坦的廣義相對論

所預測，而由引力探測器-B 所證實，

可能真實存在的情形!

這項偉大實驗的意義不僅局限在廣義相

對論的領域，它更影響了幾百位年輕物

理學家。

艾佛列特說：「由於這項實驗由大學主

導，很多學生直接參與了研究工作。

以引力探測器-B為研究課題的，單是史

丹福大學就有超過86篇博士論文，還有14篇來自

其他大學。除此之外，數百名大學生和55名中學

生，甚至女太空人莎利·萊德和諾貝爾物理學獎

得獎者艾歷·康奈爾也有參與。」

美國太空總署自1963年就撥款支持引力探測器-B

計劃。換言之，艾佛列特和他的團隊已在這個項

目的設計、推行、建造、運作和數據分析等範疇

上花了超過47年光陰，實在是一項創舉!

下一步又如何?

艾佛列特想起了他的論文導師，諾貝爾獎得獎者

帕德歷克‧布萊克特給他的忠告：「如果你在研

究物理學時不知道下一步怎麼走，不如嘗試開發

新技術，它會引領你到新的方向。」

艾佛列特說：「我們在研製引力探測器-B的過程

中開發了13種新技術，天曉得這些技術會帶我們

往哪裏?」

這條漫漫長路可能剛剛揭開序幕⋯⋯

Einstein was right again. There is a space-time vortex around Earth, and its shape precisely matches the predictions of Einstein’s theory of gravity.

Researchers confirmed these points at a press conference today at NASA headquarters where they announced the long-awaited results of Gravity Probe B (GP-B).

“The space-time around Earth appears to be distorted just as general relativity predicts,” says Stanford University physicist Francis Everitt, principal investigator of the Gravity Probe B mission.

“This is an epic result,” adds Clifford Will of Washington University in St. Louis. An expert in Einstein’s theories, Will chairs an independent panel of the National Research Council set up by NASA in 1998 to monitor and review the results of Gravity Probe B. “One day,” he predicts, “this will be written up in textbooks as one of the classic experiments in the history of physics.”

Time and space, according to Einstein’s theories of relativity, are woven together, forming a four-dimensional fabric called “space-time.” The mass of Earth dimples this fabric, much like a heavy person sitting in the middle of a trampoline. Gravity, says Einstein, is simply the motion of objects following the curvaceous lines of the dimple.

If Earth were stationary, that would be the end of the story. But Earth is not stationary. Our planet

spins, and the spin should twist the dimple, slightly, pulling it around into a 4-dimensional swirl. This is what GP-B went to space in 2004 to check.

The idea behind the experiment is simple:

Put a spinning gyroscope into orbit around the Earth, with the spin axis pointed toward some distant star as a fixed reference point. Free from external forces, the gyroscope’s axis should continue pointing at the star--forever. But if space is twisted, the direction of the gyroscope’s axis should drift over time. By noting this change in direction relative to the star, the twists of space-time could be measured.

In practice, the experiment is tremendously difficult.

The four gyroscopes in GP-B are the most perfect spheres ever made by humans. These ping pong-sized balls of fused quartz and silicon are 1.5 inches across and never vary from a perfect sphere by more than 40 atomic layers. If the gyroscopes weren’t so spherical, their spin axes would wobble even without the effects of relativity.

According to calculations, the twisted space-time around Earth should cause the axes of the gyros to drift merely 0.041 arcseconds over a year. An arcsecond is 1/3600th of a degree. To measure this angle reasonably well, GP-B needed a fantastic precision of 0.0005 arcseconds. It’s like measuring the thickness of a sheet of paper held edge-on 100 miles away.

“GP-B researchers had to invent whole new technologies to make this possible,” notes Will.

They developed a “drag free” satell ite that could brush against the outer layers of Earth’s atmosphere without disturbing the gyros. They figured out how to keep Earth’s magnetic field from penetrating the spacecraft. And they created a device to measure the spin of a gyro--without touching the gyro.

Pulling off the experiment was an exceptional challenge. But after a year of data-taking and

nearly five years of analysis, the GP-B scientists appear to have done it.

“We measured a geodetic precession of 6.600 plus or minus 0.017 arcseconds and a frame dragging effect of 0.039 plus or minus 0.007 arcseconds,” says Everitt.

For readers who are not experts in relativity: Geodetic precession is the amount of wobble caused by the static mass of the Earth (the dimple in spacetime) and the frame dragging effect is the amount of wobble caused by the spin of the Earth (the twist in spacetime). Both values are in precise accord with Einstein’s predictions.

“In the opinion of the committee that I chair, this effort was truly heroic. We were just blown away,” says Will.

The results of Gravity Probe B give physicists renewed confidence that the strange predictions of Einstein’s theory are indeed correct, and that these predictions may be applied elsewhere. The type of spacetime vortex that exists around Earth is duplicated and magnified elsewhere in the cosmos--around massive neutron stars, black holes, and active galactic nuclei.

“If you tried to spin a gyroscope in the severely twisted space-time around a black hole,” says Will, “it wouldn’t just gently precess by a fraction of a degree. It would wobble crazily and possibly even flip over.”

In binary black hole systems - that is, where one black hole orbits another black hole--the black holes themselves are spinning and thus behave like gyroscopes. Imagine a system of orbiting, spinning, wobbling, flipping black holes! That’s the sort of thing general relativity predicts and which GP-B tells us can really be true.

The scientific legacy of GP-B isn’t limited to general relativity. The project also touched the lives of hundreds of young scientists:

“Because it was based at a university many students were able to work on the project,” says Everitt. “More than 86 PhD theses at Stanford plus 14 more at other Universities were granted to students working on GP-B. Several hundred undergraduates and 55 high-school students also participated, including astronaut Sally Ride and eventual Nobel Laureate Eric Cornell.”

NASA funding for Gravity Probe B began in the fall of 1963. That means Everitt and some colleagues have been planning, promoting, building, operating, and analyzing data from the experiment for more than 47 years—truly, an epic effort.

What’s next?

Everitt recalls some advice given to him by his thesis advisor and Nobel Laureate Patrick M.S. Blackett: “If you can’t think of what physics to do next, invent some new technology, and it will lead to new physics.”

“Well ,” says Everitt , “we invented 13 new technologies for Gravity Probe B. Who knows where they will take us?”

第三講︰星際夢飛行

1961年，前蘇聯太空人加加林 (Yuri Gagarin) 乘坐「東方一號」(Восток -1) 太空船成功進入環繞地球

的軌道，實現了人類衝出地球的夢想。八年後，美國太空船「太陽神十一號」(Apollo 11) 更首次搭載

太空人登陸月球，為人類踏足其他星球邁出了歷史性的一步。今天，美國探測器「航行者一號及二號」

(Voyager 1 & 2) 經過三十多年的飛行，已逐漸逼近太陽系的邊緣，即將成為人類宇宙飛行的新里程碑。

在講座裡，我們不單回顧過去人類太空飛行的點滴，還會展望未來的藍圖，看看科學家如何憑藉各種天

馬行空的意念，構想出各式精奇的宇宙飛行器，帶領人類衝出太陽系，闖進神秘未知的星際國度。

第四講︰電學之父─法拉第的故事

法拉第 (Michael Faraday) 是偉大的科學家，他的成就推動了物理學及化學的發展。他的發現徹底改變

人類產生動力的方法，影響了今天每個人的生活方式。然而，法拉第可能是擁有最低學歷的科學家，只

有小學教育程度的他，竟然可以憑著自學而躋身於世界級科學家的行列。

在不平凡的法拉第背後，原來只是一個平凡的故事，這故事可能反映著你和我的遭遇：他治學問時經常

碰壁，惟有將勤補拙；他也是性情中人，面對夢中情人時同樣心如鹿撞；他同樣擁有的是血肉之軀，不

能避免疾病的打擊。是次的講座中，講者不會大談物理學，而是回顧法拉第的一生，我們每個平凡的人

其實都可以在其中找到自己的寫照。

第五講︰大爆炸前的宇宙

標準的宇宙學模型告訴我們，宇宙是在137億年前的一次大爆炸中誕生。那麼，在大爆炸發生以前的宇

宙是怎樣的呢？時間在大爆炸以前又以甚麼形式存在？物理學家從前普遍認為這些問題本身是沒有意義

的，但近來他們對這些問題卻有了新的想法。是次講座裡中，讓我們看看物理學家如何重新審視這些問

題。

沒有星光，就不會有天文學。天文學與光學的發展是密不可分的。無論是純粹享受星光的天文愛好者，

還是專業的天文研究員，都需要用上光學知識和各種精密的光學儀器。是次講座系列將介紹光的波動和

量子本質、光學在天文儀器上的應用及近代光學研究的最新進展。

第一講︰經典光學

究竟「光」是甚麼？有人說光是波動、也有人說光是粒子，究竟誰是誰非？人類自古已經對光懷有無限

幻想，由古代的「視線發射論」、到十七世紀的光波動及光粒子說之爭，以至於十九世紀的電磁理論統

一。本講將帶你於光的世界中暢遊，讓各位感受大自然定律的美麗。

第二講︰光學與天文儀器

第三講︰光的量子本質

二十世紀初光量子的發現讓科學和科技進入了新的時代。在理論物理促成了量子力學的興起，在應用科

觀看，但大多數時間都是失望而回。原因非常簡單：不論傳媒或大眾都不甚了解天象的成因及背後的科

學。

天象形形色色、千奇百怪，有些普通不過卻被標榜成千年一遇，有些千年一遇卻乏人問津，到底不同天

象的成因是甚麼？那些天象真正值得觀測？

旋轉的蜂蜜Spinning Honey(粵語講解 to be conducted in Cantonese)

2004年4月20日，美國太空總署發射引力探測器-B (Gravity Probe B)，利用精確的陀螺儀量度地球周圍

的引力場。2011年5月31日，研究員發表是次測量計劃的最終結果，正式證實一世紀前愛恩斯坦廣義相

對論中的預言：地球的自轉會牽引並扭曲地球周圍的時空，就像沾在地球周圍的蜂蜜被一併帶動旋動，

出現測地線效應 (geodetic effect) 和參考系拖曳 (frame dragging) 兩個奇怪的現象。這兩個現象揭示了

廣義相對論中深刻的一面﹣萬有引力的本質原來比牛頓最初所想的更為豐富奇妙。本講座將為聽眾簡介

廣義相對論、回顧百年來科學家對廣義相對論所作的幾個經典驗證，及討論引力探測器B的發現如何為

人類對引力的理解寫下新的一頁。
