PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Naming of Roseland somewhat of a mystery

Roseland originally was a place that had multiple plantations. The names included Ercildoune, Trilby, Gibson and Ruffner. In 1891, Roseland became an official post office. Documentation of the name does not exist. Recently, I came across an obituary of the man who owned the Ercildoune Hotel that is now gone. He died in 1912 and it states he named the town of Roseland. However, why would he choose that name? There is an historic marker at the Sebastian River called “Moore’s Point” named after Lawrence C. Moore. Here are the other stories:• Dr. David Rose treated patients many years ago in Sebastian. Some people think the town was named after him. He did not arrive until after 1900 and he entered the United States from Canada in 1892 and then settled in Chicago. Obviously, he came too late.• According to Aunt Katy Cain White, early in 1892, Will

Underwood met with the Cain family on the front porch to complete the application and decide on a name. A beautiful pink rambler rose bush covered one end of the porch and half the side of the house. The rose was called “The Seven Sisters.” There were seven Cain sisters and this coincidence occurred to their father. He proposed the name Roseland in honor of his daughters. Although we have no written documentation, this is very plausible and Moore

could have been with them at the time.• In 1892, the Florida East Coast Railroad arrived at the Sebastian Bridge. It resulted in an economic boom and an increase in buildings. The Ercildoune Hotel opened in 1895 and it closed during World War I. The building stood until the Depression years when it was torn down bit by bit for lumber.

• So I was at a local retail store, and the woman to my left must have applied for a “rewards card” because the cashier was asking for some information. “Your first name?” the cashier asked. “Debbie,” she said. “Last name?” “Mayfield.” I couldn’t resist … I had to rib the State Representative for not being recognized in public. We got to talking, and I asked if what I had heard is true – that is, she’s moving to Brevard County and will run for the State Senate. (The current officeholder, Thad Altman, can’t run for reelection because of term limits.) She said it’s true. Now before you get to thinking she has turned into a

carpetbagger because she’s desperate to remain an elected official, there’s a simple reason for her pending move. She recently remarried, and her husband, Bob Scaringe, lives in Brevard County. Debbie, 59, was previously married to Stan Mayfield, a State Representative from 2000-08. He died of esophageal cancer on Sept. 30, 2008, a month after he was elected Indian River County Tax Collector. She was elected as State Representative in 2008, succeeding her late husband, and is unable to run for the District 54 seat again because of term limits. Winning the State Senate District 16 seat won’t be easy. Melbourne resident Ritch Workman, also a current State Representative, is also expected to run for Altman’s seat. District 16 is definitely weighted toward Brevard County,

where about 70 percent of the voters reside. The rest live in Indian River County.• Did you hear the story about the guy who was high on the synthetic drug Flakka and tried to break into the Indian River County Jail to see his buddies? And you thought those type of stories only happened in Port St. Lucie.• It’s hard to knock the County Commission’s decision to call off a national search and hire Jason Brown, the county’s budget director, to succeed Joe Baird as county administrator. • With the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino still fresh in our minds, a woman couldn’t believe a semiautomatic rifle was one of the items put up for auction before Jake Owen’s Dec. 11 benefit concert at the Riverside Theatre. “What in the world were they thinking when the first thing they auctioned off was an assault rifle?” the woman wrote. “This is really disturbing!” County Commissioner Wesley Davis, who served as the

auctioneer, made no apologies for the rifle, which has a clip for approximately 15 rounds. “In order for it to be an assault weapon, it must be used in an assault,” he said. “This gun was not used in an assault.” An avid outdoorsman, Davis has been a member of the National Rifle Association since the age of 15. He said the gun fetched about $3,000 in the auction, which raised money for the Jake Owen Foundation. In all, the auction raised more than $25,000 for the foundation, with the money going toward local youth programs and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Of the money raised that night, $10,000 was for putting lessons from PGA star Jordan Spieth. “I hope we didn’t offend anybody who doesn’t golf,” Davis quipped.• If you eat at a local restaurant this week, please consider adding an extra dollar or two (or three) to what you would normally tip your server. Make someone’s day, won’t you?• Merry Christmas!

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• Bernie (2011, PG-13, directed by Richard Linklater). Bernie (Jack Black) is a devoted undertaker, beloved by everyone in the small Texas town where he lives. After developing an unlikely relationship with the rich, and recently widowed, town curmudgeon (Shirley MacLaine), events lead Bernie to kill her in the heat of the moment. He tries to hide the fact, but is soon caught and although he confesses to the crime, the entire town rallies around him. Based on a true story, it also stars Matthew McConaughey.• Could Souls (2009, PG-13, directed by Sophie Barthes). Paul Giamatti (playing himself) feels like the weight of his soul is keeping him from preparing for an upcoming play. When he finds out that there is a process whereby he can

have his soul removed and put into cold storage, he jumps at the chance. Eventually Paul decides he wants it back, only to discover it has been sold into the Russian black market. Off he goes to try and track it down. This surreal comedy also stars Emily Watson and David Strathairn.• Invisible Sign (2010, PG-13, directed by Marilyn Agrelo). After the illness of her father when she was a child, Mona (Jessica Alba) withdraws into the world of mathematics. As a painfully introverted

adult, Mona is forced to finally deal with her problems when her mother pushes her out of the nest – helping her to get a job as a third-grade math teacher. Will this drastic change in her life help Mona find the strength to rejoin society? Watch it and see!

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Indian River County issued 839 marriage licenses in 2014 – or an average of nearly 70 per month.

The most popular month was May (with 107 licenses issued), followed by October (89), February (88) and March (87). The least popular month was December (31).
