B. Reading: Plastic SurgeryIn October, 2004, famous television star Oprah Winfrey upset many people when she said that “Korean women have an obsession with plastic surgery.” However, it is true that many women in Korea are unsatisfied with their looks, because to be considered attractive, you have to be tall, thin, have long legs, big eyes, a small face, a V-shaped face, and pale skin. It’s been estimated that 76% of Korean women in their 20s and 30s have had plastic surgery. A Korean professor at Seoul National University said during class, “Women should get plastic surgery.” Even Ida Daussy, who originally came from France, had plastic surgery on her nose and to remove freckles. These days, even men get plastic surgery, and parents receive plastic surgery as gifts. Plastic surgery was the main topic in the Korean movies “200-Pound Beauty” ( 미녀는 괴로워 ) and “Time” ( 시간 ).

The Paparazzi- When Photographers Become Stalkers

(1)Katie Holmes: I was so annoyed the other day in Manhattan when the paparazzi started taking pictures of me and Suri. She got so frightened and frustrated that she put her hands on her ears.

(2) Scarlett Johansson: Oh poor Suri! She must have been so surprised that moment!

(3) Katie Holmes: Yes, Scarlett. She was so shocked with all the flashes and clicks around us. Even the little one feels that there is no room for privacy.

(4) Scarlett Johansson: I totally understand. Once there was a paparazzo waiting for me outside my home. He was there for a whole two days. Then another guy came the third day, waiting for me like the other guy.

(5) Katie Holmes: Why didn’t you call the police?

(6) Scarlett Johansson: I did. I called the police, but they told me that the law says the two days he had stalked me is not against the law. If he had been there for more than three days it would be illegal. Can you believe that? 

(7) Katie Holmes: You mean, the police cannot do anything about the two days of stalking?

(8) Scarlett Johansson: No, they can’t do anything, because that will not go against the law. You see, these paparazzi know all about the law and they are even switching shifts on stalking celebrities.

(9) Katie Holmes: That is absolutely annoying. Although we can understand some kind of intrusion with the paparazzi, most of the times, it is getting way beyond my patience.

(10) Scarlett Johansson: Do you remember the accident that happened to Lady Diana in the late 1990s? The paparazzi should have learned a lesson from that accident, but I don’t think they would ever respect our lives. I don't know what the difference is between stalking and following you with a giant camera and following you home and to a supermarket. Certainly, if I were to stalk somebody, that's what I'd do.

(11) Katie Holmes: Celebrities know this is the price of fame, but our children are just innocent bystanders.

Language Hints: Indirect speechWe use indirect speech (or reported speech) to report the meaning of what was said, not the exact words. We put indirect speech in a noun clause begin-ning with that or a wh- word (what, where, when, etc).

Step 1: SettingImagine you are in a court. One person is a famous celebrity, and

another person shouldpretend to be a paparazzi. You are about to make a closing argu-

ment, defending your actions and expressing your thoughts to the Jury.

Step 2: PrepareMake an outline of what you want to say as a paparazzi or a

celebrity. You may reuse the questions and answers from the previous section, What Do You

Think?, as your guideline. Be sure to include the following information:• When did the experience happen?• Where were you?• What was the paparazzi or celebrity doing?• How did you feel?• What did you do?
