Lesson 2

In this poem, the writer is looking at a tiger . The poet is asking what kind of person

could design the animal, and how they could make such a fearsome creature! The

poem was written in 1794 (after Shakespeare and before Dickens) by William Blake.

William Blake is a famous writer who is also famous for illustrating many of his poems.

He even painted a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Today, he is known just

as much for his fascinating paintings as he is for his poems.

The poem is about the creator (the person who made) of a tiger.

The poet wonders (thinks deeply about) who could have been the creator of the

tiger and where such a fearsome (scary) animal could have been made.

The poet asks who could have been able to create the heart and brain of the tiger

and what tools (things to build something) the creator would need.

Lesson 3

Use this model paragraph to check your work:

Hesketh makes the owl seem dangerous as she describes how powerful it is.

This can be seen when the owl is described as ‘striking silent as frost’.

Striking means hitting something or appearing beautiful. This verb could be

describing how intense an owl’s eyes are as they stare at things but it could also

describe how an owl might attack its prey. By comparing it to frost, this metaphor

allows the reader to imagine how threatening it must be as coldness is also

associated with being heartless. Frost can creep up on things slowly just like the owl

so it successfully kills its victims who do not see him approaching.
