CULTURAL INSIGHT

Vietnamese people aren’t used to touching when meeting each other... so I don’t recommend kissing or hugging. BUT business people and male friends do shake hands. When meeting a Vietnamese person for the first time, just introducing yourself with a smile is the best way to go.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Xin chào or Chào is the safest, easiest way to greet someone in Vietnam. In daily conversation, Vietnamese people usually say Chào + a pronoun indicating the other person. The pronoun depends on age, gender, and relationship, so it can be quite complicated. Young people nowadays tend to use English words like "Hi" and "Bye" to greet each other.

Meaning “How’re you doing these days?” In response, you don’t say cảm ơn like in English; just answer directly saying, Tôi khoẻ meaning “I'm fine” or Tôi vẫn ổn meaning “I’m still doing well,” and ask how they’re doing.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Many Vietnamese people can’t speak English but they’re not afraid of foreigners. So, it’s totally fine to ask a Vietnamese person on the street about something. You may not get the answer, but you won't receive unfriendly treatment. Some people will even find a way to help you out. One tip is to ask a younger person because they’re more likely to speak some English.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Asking people’s ages is very common in Vietnam, and isn’t considered rude. The reason is because age is used to determine the pronoun used when addressing someone. Also, Vietnamese people add a year to their real age since it’s believed a baby is already 1 year old at birth. So to know the exact age, they ask Bạn sinh năm bao nhiêu? It means “In what year were you born?”

CULTURAL INSIGHT

At outdoor markets in Vietnam, you'll notice there's no price tags - you have to ask the cost and bargain for better deals. Bargaining isn’t easy even for locals, but it can be a fun experience. Try saying: Đắt quá. Giảm giá chút đi. meaning “Too expensive. Please reduce the price a little.” You may not get a better deal, but at least it shows them you won’t be ripped off easily.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Vậy is a sentence-ending particle which is commonly used to end a question. Vậy makes the question softer, more intimate, and shows that the speaker really cares and wants to know the answer. Questions without particles still make sense but sound emotionless. Vietnamese people like to be informal and intimate in daily conversation, so they use a lot of sentence-ending particles to show feeling in their words.

In Vietnam, feel free to ask for directions on the street. Most people will be willing to help, and if they’re not sure, they may ask someone close by then help you. The best way not to get lost is to write down the address of the place you’re going. Then it’ll be easier to take a taxi or get correct instructions from people on the street.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Không which means “no” or “not” is pronounced as hông in southern Vietnamese. So if you talk to a Southerner, you may hear them say Tôi hông có bút to mean “I don't have a pen” or Tôi hông có thời gian to mean “I don't have time.” However, hông has no meaning in standard Vietnamese and is only spoken dialect. In writing, only không with k is accepted as correct.

There is a very common proverb in Vietnamese: Ghét của nào trời trao của ấy. It literally means “you'll be given what you hate.” This proverb means if you hate something too much, you are more likely to end up with it. It is used very frequently in daily conversation, to tease or to mock someone who always reacts strongly to something or someone they hate.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

"Waiter or waitress" is bồi bàn in Vietnamese. But in a restaurant, we just say “Hey you” or Em ơi. Em, meaning "you", is a pronoun used for a younger person and ơi is used to call someone. Most waiters and waitresses in Vietnam are younger, which is why they use this. If they look older, then Chị ơi for a woman, and Anh ơi for a man, is used.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

The most common way to ask for the bill in Vietnam is Em ơi, tính tiền. Vietnamese people don’t usually use formal language for this. Another interesting phrase is Không cần thối lại đâu. Like Không cần trả lại đâu, which we learned in the lesson, both mean "No need to return the change." Thối or “to return” is southern Vietnamese, but people from the north are starting to use it now too.
