    Summary

Our group of 8 enjoyed a wonderful week in sunny Lesvos, in fact it was a little too sunny at times, the temperatu

    rose to nearly 30D

C on a couple of days which made the birding very tiring! But we had a great time, leisuredays and plenty of birds to see. Highlights included a Pygmy Cormorant at Dipi Larisos on day one, two Gre

Spotted Cuckoos, 2 beautiful male Collared Flycatchers at Meladia, a very showy Long-eared Owl with ScopOwls sitting in the next tree. Hundreds of terns, waders, egrets, ibis and herons on the Alykes wetlands. Even olast day produced excitement in the shape of a Dalmatian Pelican, a rare visitor to Lesvos; we saw one at thKalloni Salt Pans. We had great views of most of the Lesvos specials: Krupers Nuthatch, Cretzschmars Cinereous Buntings, Rufous Bush Robin, Masked Shrike, Western Rock Nuthatch and many more.

    DAY 1 - SATURDAY APRIL 28TH

GATWICK TO MYTILINE SKALA KALLONI VIA DIPI LARISOS MARSHES. LATER WEVISITED: SKALA KALLONI TSIKNIAS RIVER AND KALLONI SALT PANS

BIRD OF THE DAY - PYGMY CORMORANT

But also high on the list; Temmincks Stint, Little Bittern and good numbers of Squacco Herons.

The group met at Gatwick Airport in preparation for the direct flight to Mytiline, Lesvos. Everything went

smoothly at both airports and by 2:30pm local time we were on our way to our hotel in Skala Kalloni which is

situated in the centre of the island. The weather was superb, a clear sky a little breeze and a temperature of 21C.

A VIEW UP THE TSIKNIAS RIVER A VERY CONFIDING LITTLE BITTERN

We saw Hooded Crow, Barn Swallow and Yellow-legged Gull as we worked our way through Mytiline town anbefore long we were on the highway heading out towards the Gulf of Gera. There was one short stop planned en-

route and that was at Dipi Larisos Reed-beds which are found on the Gulf of Gera and where a pair ofPygmyCormorants had been reported.

Sure enough one of the birds was present when we arrived, a super bird for our tour list and a lifer for me, it was a

little too distant to photograph. At the same place we found Great Cormorant, Spanish Sparrow, YellowWagtail and we heard a Cettis Warbler.

We arrived at our hotel at 4pm and after a short settling in period we set off for our first birding excursion on th

superb island. In Skala Kalloni we stopped to admire a beautiful Squacco Heron seen in a ditch, it was in fubreeding plumage and the afternoon sun made it looked exquisite. Along the track to Tsiknias River we found

more Squaccos, a lot ofWood Sandpipers and more Yellow Wagtails. We also found several Corn BuntinHouse Martins and Sand Martins. At the river we found an Oystercatcher which is a good species for thLesvos list. There was also Common Terns, Little Terns, Wood Sandpipers, but the star of the show wasmagnificent adult Black Stork.

Upriver at the ford we spent some time watching a Little Bittern feeding, with its ridiculously long neck it woulean from its reedy perch and snatch food from the water. Also at the ford were many more Wood Sandpipe(30+), Little Ringed Plover (2), Temmincks Stint (2), Reed Warbler, Whinchat and anotherBlack Stork. LoofYellow Wagtails were also feeding at the ford, we saw Black-headed, Blue headed and Grey Headed. A littfurther upriver we came across a party of 8 Gull Billed Terns, they were feeding in a small pool area.

Lastly we paid a visit to the salt pans, it was brief stop to look for a reported Baillons Crake which failed to showhowever we enjoyed great views of White-winged Terns, Gull-billed Terns, Kentish Plover, GreenshanCommon Sandpiper, Black-headed Wagtail, 2 more Black Storks and we had distant views of Avocet an

Greater Flamingo. This finished off our day nicely so we drove back to the hotel in readiness for our 7:30pdinner.

What a great start to our first day, we only saw 40+ species of birds, but there was good feeling in the group aboufuture sightings and a lovely atmosphere at dinner.

    DAY 2 SUNDAY APRIL 29TH

SKALA KALLONI - KALLONI SALT PANS - UPPER TSIKNIAS RIVER

BIRD OF THE DAY - CITRINE WAGTAIL

    3/14

What a superb start to the holiday the weather was fantastic and the setting idyllic. We surfaced at 6:30am and w

were greeted by a clear blue sky, no breeze but with a little chill in the air.

We spent the day 'locally' visiting both rivers that form the east/west boundaries either side of Kalloni and we put

lot of time in at the salt pans further to the east. Our pre-breakfast outing started at 6:30am and took in the Christo

    River and surrounding salt marsh.

    CIRTRINE WAGTAIL GARGANEY

We found Stone Curlew and several species of wader, a Little Stint was the only new one for our list.

The rest of the morning was spent in and around the Salt Pans. We listed over 80 species and some of th

highlights were: Garganey, Glossy Ibis, Great White Egret, Collared Pratincole, Whiskered Tern, Rethroated Pipit, Tawny Pipit, Lesser Grey Shrike, Black headed Bunting, Short-toed Lark, Gull-billed TerWhite-winged Tern and tons of waders the best of which was Temminck's Stint. Not a bad list of goodies!!!

We also visited the east side of the salt pans where we found two Citrine Wagtails, great birds but very flighty andifficult to photograph

Another site we visited was a track that follows the upper stretch of the Tsiknias River, along there we foun

Hoopoe, Woodchat Shrike, Black-eared Wheatear and several raptors drifted over which included: Short-toeEagle (4), Long-legged Buzzard, Pergerine Falcon and Hobby.

Lastly we visited the lower Tsiknias River and near the ford we found Temminck's Stint (4), Little Bittern (2plenty ofWood Sandpipers, Little ringed Plovers, Black Stork, Common Nightingales, Olivaceous WarblerBee-eaters and a host of other species. At the river mouth we saw 5 Mediterranean Gulls. Before we finished fthe day we visited a site in the middle of Papina, the next village to Skala Kalloni, where we had great views

both Scop's Owl and Long-eared Owl. The LEO was positioned in the dark and so I was unable to obtain a digscope picture.

    DAY 3 - MONDAY APRIL 30TH

PARAKILO CHAPEL - AGRA - SKALA ERESOS - ERESOS TO SIGRI COAST ROAD VIA MELADIA

    VALLEY

BIRD OF THE DAY: COLLARED FLYCATCHER

Keep it coming!!! Another great day of birding in superb weather, the only downside is the lack of migran

because of the good weather, there were many species but not many of each.

We started early at 8am heading for Sigri by taking th

coast road along the north side of the Gulf of KallonOur first stop was at the Chapel just west of Paraki

where we found a number of nice species. Our firCretzschmars Bunting was exciting for the group bthe beauty of the Cirl Bunting was equally admired. Blue Rock Thrush sang from the top of a spruce tree, pair of Common Whitethroats chased one anotharound and at least three Black-eared Wheatears flittabout one the rocky slopes. More distant birds include

a Short-toed Eagle (carrying a snake), a Golden Orioseen briefly and a Common Kestrel hovering over thhillside.

A brief stop at the towers above the town of Agraproduced our first Western Rock Nuthatch, more BluRock Thrushes and Black-eared Wheatears. Then jua couple of kilometers along the road we stopped to

watch soaring raptors, three of which were EleanorasFalcons and one a Short-toed Eagle.

At Skala Eresos we were very lucky to find a nest of thePenduline Tit, it was still under construction and weenjoyed watching the birds collecting nesting material

from the nearby reed mace. Other birds seen includedgreat views ofCommon Nightingale and roosting NightHerons as well as Olivaceous Warbler, Reed Warblerand we heard a couple ofCettis Warblers.

    TEMMINCKS STINT

From Eresos we took the coast track through the Meladia

Valley, we spent a good 3 hours during several stops

including a picnic lunch break. Over the whole valleyand the ford area we listed a number of great species, the

best of which were: Collared Flycatcher (2), BarredWarbler, Orphean Warbler, Subalpine Warbler,Whinchat (6), Masked Shrike (1), Red-backed Shrike(24), Woodchat Shrike (8), Spotted Flycatcher (18), Pied Flycatcher (2), lots of Black-headed BuntingCretzschmars Buntings and a couple ofLittle Owls.

We drove through Sigri and up through the hills back towards kalloni via Andissa. Along the road above Sigri w

saw 8 Lesser Kestrels feeding over the hillside. At the Eresos crossroads we found a couple of IsabellinWheatears and a Middle Spotted Woodpecker.

    5/14

Back at kalloni at 6pm we decided to have a quick look at the Tsiknias River, a good decision, as we found som

great birds. New for the trip list were Montagus Harrier and Red Footed Falcon but we also enjoyeTemmincks Stint (4), Little Bittern (3), lots ofSquacco Herons,Wood Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plovers anYellow Wagtails. The evening light was superb and we didnt want to leave this magical scene, but we had to gback to the hotel for dinner.

BIRD OF THE DAY: LITTLE CRAKE

It got too hot today, up to 30 C during the afternoon, a very slow birding day with nothing major to report. We setoff at 6:15am to Metochi Lake just north of Kalloni. We saw 5 Little Crakes, one or two showed extremely welland the group had excellent views. Not much else was on show.

GREAT WHITE EGRET - SHOWING ITS FACIAL

    BREEDING PLUMMAGE

After breakfast we set off towards Petra on the nor

coast of the island. We stopped at the well known raptwatch point called the 'Bandstand'. From there we sa

At Petra we stopped at Kavaki on the coast road anspent a nice hour watching Ruppell's Warblers on tw

breeding territories. We also found Subalpine Warbler, Orphean Warbler, Turtle Dove and Blue RocThrush.

Other birds seen on the reservoir near Petra were; Ruddy Shelduckand a Grey Heron. We ate our lunch on thbeach at Eftalou, it was cooler there, we saw a Shag and several groups ofYelkouan Shearwaters.

The afternoon got really hot, we spent our time in the shade of trees whilst looking for raptors and woodlan

species along tracks in the Napi valley; we found Red-footed Falcon, Hobby, Common Buzzard, Short-toe

Eagle, Raven and a Common Kestrel. Woodland species included: Sombre Tit, Hoopoe, Common CuckoTurtle Dove and lots of common species.

    KRUPER'S NUTHATCH (PHOTO BY STEPHELEES)

It got hotter still today and there was hardly a breez

so we took it very leisurely and kept mainly

    woodland birding.

We set off from the hotel at 8am and drove directly

Achladeri to the pine woods where the KruperNuthatch breeds. After a short walk into the forest wfound a beautiful Woodlark, it was carrying food fits young.

    LITTLE STINT LITTLE RINGED PLOVER

We also saw Cirl Bunting and we heard a Common Cuckoo. We worked our way deeper into the wood uneventually we found a Kruper's Nuthatch, it was also carrying food, we watched it drop down to a nest hole (sepicture above) where we all enjoyed great views. Whilst watching the Nuthatch we found a pair ofShort-toeTreecreepers which were feeding in nearby trees.

From Achladeri we drove up the mountains to

Dimitrios where we spent some time looking for morewoodland species we also stopped for coffee. Species

found included: Serin, Wren, Red-rumped Swallow,Crag Martin, Short-toed Eagle, Common Buzzardand Long-legged Buzzard.

    WOODLARK

At Vaterea we had a great time on the bridge over the

Alimortopatos River just west of this lovely seasidetown. Just below the bridge on the concrete weir we

found a superb Citrine Wagtail, a Little Stint, a

    SERIN

Common Sandpiper and a Little Ringed Plover. Wdrove a short way upriver and took lunch by a ford whe

we watched both House and Spanish Sparrows bathinwith Goldfinch and Black-headed Bunting. Whileating our food an Olivaceous Warbler sang from nearby bush and a Little Bittern flew across the reeds.

we watched Sardinian Warblers, Whinchat, Woodchat Shrike, Red-backed Shrike and more Black-headeBuntings.

We headed back to Kalloni at 4pm making a brief stop at Makara Marshes where we saw a couple of PurpHerons, Squacco Heron, Ruddy Shelduckand a Little Grebe. Our tour of the Salt Pans finished off the day; wsaw many of the usual species and added Marsh Sandpiper to our trip list. Last port of call was the mouth of thTsiknias River where two Oystercatchers were joined by a Ruddy Turnstone which was also a new species fthe trip. We finished at 7pm - it was a long day but it we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

    LESVOS - 7 DAY TOUR - DAY 6 - MAY 3rd 2012TSIKNIAS RIVER - FILA RADIO MAST - IPSILOU MONASTERY - SIGRI FIELDS - MELADIA VALLE

BIRD OF THE DAY - CINEREOUS BUNTING

The blistering heat continues, which is makin

birding very difficult. A stronger breeze was preseall day which brought the temperature down but w

    still got hot.

Our day started at 8am as we left the hotel and heade

for the Tsiknias River to look for a Spotted Crakthat had been reported the night before. After a showhile we found the crake but only half the group sa

it before it walk into cover. A couple of WooSandpipers were there too.

    EUROPEAN BEE-EATERS

Our main destination for today was the Fields at Sig

so we set off through the centre of the island headinfor Dafia and then to Filia. At Filia we pulled ov

near the radio mast where a lovely area of oak woodland is found. Our target bird was the Eastern BonelliWarbler, we heard at least 3 singing and we had good views of one of them. Other species found in the woodlanwere Subalpine Warbler, Orphean Warbler, Cirl Bunting and Jay. We heard Turtle Doves and Golde

Orioles and a Hobby flew over us just before wleft.

A few miles out of Vatousa we stopped in th

canyon at Lardia to look forRock Sparrows whicwere very obliging, there were also Red-rumpeSwallows, Crag Martins, Black-eared Wheateaand a Blue Rock Thrush.

    RED-BACKED SHRIKE

Passing through some wonderful scenery our ne

stop was the monastery at Ipsilou, this active, 'sileorder' monastery is perched on the top of a hig

pinnacle of rock and all the slopes are covered

oak woodland, which is, under normal weathconditions, a magnet for migrant warblers. Today

was barren, during our 2 hour stop we only found

couple of Blackcaps and half a dozen SpotteFlycatchers. The disappointment was counteracte

    9/14

with good views of Cinereous Bunting, Rock Nuthatch, Little Owl, Eurasian Nuthatch and lots of Blaceared Wheatears.

The Sigri fields proved to be the same, devoid of migrants, although the wind there didn't help. We heard a fe

Golden Orioles, saw several Woodchat and Red-backed Shrikes and during one walk we found OrpheaWarbler and Olivaceous Warblers both in full song. Other species seen included a singing Masked Shrike (thconfused some of the group as such a sweet melodic sound wasn't expected from a shrike), we also found WooWarbler, Lesser Kestrel, Turtle Dove and Black-headed Wagtail.

We returned home the long way round taking the dirt track from Sigri to Eresos, a couple of stops in the Meladvalley produced a few more birds. At the small chapel near the ford we found a stunning Wood Warbler, PieFlycatcher (2), Spotted Flycatcher, Common Whitethroat and a Marsh Warbler was singing from the deescrub.

At the fig plantation we had a good time watching European Bee-eaters, there were also plenty of flycatchers bnot much else.

It had been a long day out as we arrived back at the hotel at 7pm. I think the scenery of this beautiful island ha

been just as enjoyable as the birding today!

    LESVOS - 7 DAY TOUR - DAY 7 MAY 4TH 2012

TISKNIAS RIVER - MADAROS - NAPI VALLEY - PLANTANIA - MESA - KALLONI SALT PANS -

    TSIKNIAS RIVER

BIRD OF THE DAY - GREAT SPOTTED CUCKOO

Our last full day and another fantastic one, wall to wa

sunshine, the wind had shifted to the north so it was a littcooler.

We set off at 8am in search of new species to add to our lis

but before we did that, we visited the Tsiknias River to try

see the Spotted Crake for a second time as some of thgroup never had good views of it the first time aroun

Unfortunately the bird had gone, but we did see Great ReeWarbler, European Bee-eater and a good number Wood Sandpipers.

We then took a track from the Upper Tisknias River

Madaros where we searched for a Rufous Bush Robin. Asoon as we got out of the bus we heard it singing and quickly located it on the top of a bush, great result,

smashing bird. We also had good views ofCirl Bunting, Black-eared Wheatear and a Long-legged Buzzarflew over.

  • 7/31/2019 Lesvos 2012/04/28 - Wingpspan

    10/14

We then drove round to the Napi Valley and stopped just after the village of Napi. The air was full of bird song an

it wasn't long before we found some good species. The best was, of course, the Great Spotted Cuckoo, we fountwo of them and had great, extensive views of them. Oth

species seen were Hoopoe, Masked Shrike, Turtle DovSombre Tit, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, WoodlarJay, Long-legged and Common Buzzard and lots of thmore common species.

    GRASS SNAKE

Following the excitement of the cuckoo we visited an arecalled Platania where we hoped to see Olive-trWarbler.` After an hour or so we gave up, not a singbird was seen or heard. The Olive Tree Warbler is a laarriving migrant which normally arrives during the fir

few days of May, obviously late this year.

We drove back to Kalloni and on to Mesa where we sat o

a bridge overlooking the marsh whilst we ate our picnic lunch. The marsh held several species, Squacco Heroand Purple Heron, Wood Sandpiper, Ruff, Little Stint, Ruddy Shelduck, Little Egret and a few pairs

    Black-winged Stilts.

We then followed the road along the south of the Kalloni Bay passing Achladeri and into some olive groves wherwe stopped and looked forOlive Tree Warbler, again. However none were calling, we did see plenty ofMaskeShrikes, Bee-eaters, Olivaceous Warbler and a Raven.

It was now late afternoon so we drove back to the hotel in Skala Kalloni where some of the group decided to call

a day. The rest of us decided to have a mini bird-race and set off to find 50 species in 3 hours and only visitin

    areas around Skala Kalloni.

We achieved our goal in 2 hours 30mins by visiting both the Tsiknias and Christou rivers and the Salt Pans. W

had great views ofLong-eared Owl which one of our first birds. At 7pm we concluded the birding for the day.

Saturday 5th May. Kalloni Salt Pans - Skala Kalloni Mytiline Airport.

Some of the group decided to go out early on the la

morning and the others took a leisurely walk around th

    village and the hotel grounds.

Our outing at 6:30am was to the salt pans at Kallo

where a Dalmatian Pelican had been seen the previonight coming in to roost. Sure enough there it w

sitting like a giant prehistoric bird amongst the mucsmallerAvocets. We saw it in flight a couple of timand a bit later it was sitting on the dead-calm sea Kalloni Bay.

    BLACK STORK

In the meantime we spent some time looking into the flooded field behind the pans, it was full of birds. There wer

a good variety of waders as well as herons and egrets, but no Glossy Ibis. Over the hour our highlights were:

single Garganey, Spotted Redshank, summer plumaged Curlew Sandpipers, Little Stint, a huge number

    11/14

Ruff, 2 Greenshank, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Ruddy Shelduck, Little Ringed Plover. There were lots Squacco Herons which looked fabulous in the early morning light, as the orange hues enhanced their beautifplumage. Flying over the pools were good numbers of Terns, Common, Little and White-winged as well several Whiskered Terns.

We set off back to hotel for an 8am breakfast before departing for the airport at 9:30am. One last stop at Dip

Larisos along the way to the airport proved fruitless as we search for a Spur-winged Plover that had been reporteon a number of occasions over the last few days.

After checking-in our hold luggage we were able to sit on the beach and watch Scolopis Shearwaters in thdistance and the last bird of note for the trip list was a Honey Buzzard that drifted over the distance hills beyonthe airfield. Our flight was on time and we arrived back in London mid-afternoon, it was 9C and raining, oh........ be back on a Greek Island in 25C again.......I am looking forward to next years trip already.
