Utility Relocation and Street Work This phase of construction includes relocation of utilities and constructing streetscape. Residents, businesses, and other adjacent stakeholders will be notified about temporary lane restrictions, nighttime work and occasional utility service disruptions, which may be required.
Stop Platform and Track Installation During this construction phase, major streetcar infrastructure will be installed. Work will primarily take place in the roadway and in stop areas. Temporary traffic controls will be in place to ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic.
System and Stop Finishes These activities will include installation of shelters, art and landscaping and will mainly occur within the streetcar trackway and stop areas. Minimal lane closures and traffic restrictions will be needed during this phase of construction. Once complete, this work will conclude construction.
Vehicle Testing Vehicle testing is the final step before the streetcar opens. Testing allows for a full inspection of the system, including track and overhead wire and operator training.
CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTSValley Metro and the Tempe Streetcar Project contractor, Stacy and Witbeck, will work through the following construction elements in an expeditious yet safe manner.
Let's get to workConstruction on the Tempe Streetcar Project began in June 2017. The 3-mile route will serve downtown Tempe, Arizona State University, the Rio Salado corridor and many Tempe neighborhoods.
The design contains:
• Off-wire operation through Downtown on Mill Avenue and gateway intersections
• 14 stops with two connecting to light rail stations at 3rd/Mill and Dorsey/Apache
• Primarily shared roadway with automobiles
• Ability to detour for major Tempe events
Valley Metro's first streetcar line represents a significant and valuable investment in the Valley’s future. Tempe Streetcar will provide the infrastructure needed to meet transportation needs, connect people to jobs and entertainment and offer another way to get around.
