Many of you now know about CNR (TNR) and the benefits of it. However, many people don’t know how to go about it. So here’s a run down of how you can go about doing CNR in your area for both dogs and cats. Please contact Animals Taiwan at the beginning to see if there are any other people in your area doing CNR so you could work together.

CNR (TNR) How can you help!

Letter fromLetter from The DirectorThe DirectorMy Name is Peter Poon, newly on board Executive

Director of Animals Taiwan.

Animals Taiwan will strive to increase efforts in our TNR/CNR programs in 2011 and provide solutions to stray management within communities. We hope to improve the relationship between animals and ankindby volume control of the stray population and to improve the quality of lives by communication with communities and individuals, while our turf is highly overlapping.

We have a large quantity of strays in Taiwan and for a long time we relied in a hand full of volunteers for support with few resources and were barely recognized by our society or government. However, we are going to try our best to make it better with more rescues, TNR/CNR, communities grass-root campaigns, volunteer training/education and general awareness campaigns.

We need your generous support, in any form, to make it come true.

Step 1 –Catalogue the amount of

cats or dogs. Take photos and write down description, sex, approx age, temperament (shy, friendly, aggressive, barker, etc)

Step 2 –Find out who is Feeding

them - If it’s you there will most probably be other people as well. Make sure you find out who all the people feeding are. You need to know what is being fed, when they are being fed and how the animals react to each feeder.

Page 2: Letter from The Director - Animals Taiwan · your puppy for peeing or pooing. It is a necessity and normal. There are three certain times when your puppy is likely to relieve themselves;

Step 3 –Contact a Local Vet – Talk to him or her about how you can work

together to get these animals spayed and neutered that is convenient for the vet and not too expensive for you. If your local vet isn’t willing to help, please let Animals Taiwan know, we can put you in touch with another vet and keep the non-willing vet on file for future reference.

Step 4 –Neighborhood Support - Talk to neighbors, council members, local authorities to gain

support and financial backing for your project. You will need to present the data, how many animals, vet bills, benefits, etc. Animals Taiwan can help you here too. We can send along an AT representative to help you convince your community.

Step 5 –Catching the Animals - Focus on females first. There are 3 types of catching

a)Friendly (priority). These dogs can be caught with the help of the feeders or yourself. You’ll need to gain their confidence by touching them every day leading up to the catching day. Putting leads on them, then taking them off. Grabbing them by the neck then picking them up and putting them down. Just so the dogs don’t feel this is anything new when the day of catching comes around.

b)Little shy but hang around. These dogs/cats have the chance to become friendlier, so you can spend the time trying to gain their confidence feeding every day, calling them over and slowly getting them used to yourself or the feeder/catcher. If, however, they still can’t be caught by hand, you may need the human traps. Animals Taiwan can teach you how to most effectively use these.

c)Totally wary. You can still gain their confidence every day by ignoring them. They will get used to your presence and come out when you are there. These dogs/cats will probably either need the overnight trapping or blow darting, both of which Animals Taiwan can help with.

*REMEMBER: Make sure all the animals are NOT fed the day before catching. This is for medical reasons as well as making them easier to catch as they are hungry.

Page 3: Letter from The Director - Animals Taiwan · your puppy for peeing or pooing. It is a necessity and normal. There are three certain times when your puppy is likely to relieve themselves;

Step 6 –Spay and Neutering – Work closely with your vet. Ask your vet if they

would be willing to learn the glue method of neutering which means there are no stitches on the outside, so they don’t need to return for check ups. It is also safer for the animals once released. De-worm, de- tick/flea. It’s a good idea to do this when the dog/cat is at the vets. It’s not a good idea to get them vaccinated at the same time as the operation as stress can cause the vaccination to have negative effects on the animals. If the animal is friendly you can start the vaccinations before the operation and continue after. If it is possible, it can be a good idea to let the animals recover for a day or two before releasing them, this also gives time to give them the antibiotics neededto help them

recover quickly. (Either staying at the vets or having a place where they can stay in a cagefor a day or two

where it’s dry and safe). Make sure all animals are photographed for the record.

Step 7 –Release and Monitoring – Once the animal has been released you and the feeders

need to monitor their wellbeing. Making sure there are no complications with the operation.

Step 8 –Constant Vigilance - Keep a record of the animals over the next year or so. Recording

any new comers, any loses, etc. This record is very useful for future projects and Animals Taiwan would be extremely grateful for this. This is how we can convince the rest of the island to follow and learn that CNR is the best way of controlling the population.

Please contact Animals Taiwan at the beginning of your project. This way we can communicate with surrounding areas and work with Mayors, and council to stop the government from picking up the dogs which are under the CNR project.

Puppies in the HousePuppies in the HouseHaving a new puppy is an exciting time. However, it is important to make sure you look

after your puppy’s health and welfare to ensure your puppy has a long and happy life! Dog ownership is a long-term commitment. They require proper obedience training, Veterinary services, shelter, proper nutrition, fresh water, exercise, socialization and an owner’s affection.

When a puppy is born it takes 30-45 days for it to finish weaning at which point you are able to take the puppy home, as it is able to sustain without its mother. It is important that before you take your puppy home you should ‘puppy-proof’ your home. Remove access to any potentially dangerous objects such as electrical cords, cleaning products or plants. If necessary, use baby gates to block certain areas of your home.

Once home there are several things that you should do:

Take your puppy to a vet for a health check. If you are unable to do so you can do the basics yourself. Check that their eyes are

clear, their ears are clean and that their toe nails are not too long. Ask your vet about the required vaccinations and when they should be done along with other medical treatment such as de-worming, flea and tick treatment and other things to check for.

Bathing your dog is important not only to keep the smell down but also to preventbacteria spreading in the skin.By bathing your puppy 1-2 times per month can help reduce any risk of infection.

Remember to ask your vet when the puppy can be bathed after an injection or receiving medication, there may be time frames.

Feeding your puppy as often as three times a day for the first 10 weeks is best. After 10-12 weeks it can be reduced to 2 times a day. Set yourself a time limit of 15-30

minutes to allow your puppy to eat their meal. If they have not finished then take the bowl away. You want to reduce having food continually available as you do not want to encourage over eating.

Spaying and Neutering should always be done.Spaying your female puppy reduces the risk

of breast cancer and endometriosis. It also prevents any unwanted litter arrivals! Neutering your male puppy reduces their risk of prostate cancer, the tendency to roam and their general level of aggression will also decrease. Speak to your vet about the right time for spaying or neutering.

Behavior and TrainingObedience training should begin as soon

as the puppy arrives at your home. Housetraining your puppy is all about the three R’s: Routine, relief and reward. It is a tricky time for both dog and owner but the main point to remember is to never scold your puppy for peeing or pooing. It is a necessity and normal. There are three certain times when your puppy is likely to relieve themselves; after sleeping, after eating and after playing. Here are a few tips to help you on your way:1. Routinely take your puppy outside after each of the three activities where your puppy is likely to relieve itself. Stay with your puppy as they go to the toilet introduce a word or two such as "go to the toilet" and the instant they finish reward your puppy.

2. Always look out for signs that they need the toilet such as sniffing, circling or staring at you.3. Cage training might be a good way for you to train your puppy. The purpose of this short-term (under an hour) close confinement is to inhibit the puppy from toileting at all indoors. Puppies are very unlikely to mess in their own beds, they are clean animals. When released the puppy should be taken outside immediately. As the dog learns this short period can be extended.4. During the night most people lay down newspaper for their new puppy. By laying down newspaper and letting your puppy relieve itself inside the house can cause a lot of confusion and can extend the time needed for training. Instead, you can take your puppy outside throughout the night. By taking your puppy outside a couple of times throughout the night may seem more inconvenient but in the long term it will work out better. After you have gained a feel for the best times you can reduce the times your puppy is taken outside to just once. A cage can also be used during the night.

5. When you leave your puppy alone for prolonged periods, put them in an area that is easy to clean, such as kitchen or utility room.6. Chewing is a natural activity and most dogs go through two distinct periods of chewing; three- six months when a puppy is teething. Nine months when the adolescent dog is investigating novel items and building jaw strength for adulthood. Make sure your puppy has lots of safe chew toys to distract them. If your puppy is chewing something then do not chase your dog. If it is of no value you should simply ignore your dog. However if it is of value, swap it for one of his toys or treat. Teaching your puppy to ‘leave’ is the key point for chewing though. You are rewarding your puppy for leaving not for stealing.7. Redirect nuisance puppy behaviors. Do not allow your puppy to bite, nip or mouth during play; Instead, follow positive reinforcement training methods to encourage her to play nicely. Additionally, do not entertain a whining, needy puppy. Only give her affection when the puppy is calm, or you could be heading for a pushy, manipulative adult dog.Although this seems like a lot of

information it is only a scratch on the surface of the information available. There are lots of things to consider when planning your puppy training regime such as lifestyle and convenience. However as long as your training is consistent and the whole family participates there is no reason not to end up with a healthy, happy, obedient adult dog.

However if you forget to take your puppy outside in the morning and cause the puppy to make a mess in their own bed you can actually cause the puppy to think that is the use of the cage.

Carol Lin a long time supporter and volunteer for Animals Taiwan also went up on stage to introduce our organization and let everyone know about our wonderful furry friends. We’re sure that thanks to her great presentation we will have even more people interested in adopting and hopefully less people buying pets.

We want to say a big thank you to all who attended and helped out from our volunteers selling and taking care of the animals to our drivers who made sure our merchandise and furry friends made it to the carnival on time and got back to our centre safely.

We also want to say thank you to Michelle Senczi and Joe Seydewitz who came with their delicious home made doggy treats and generously gave Animals Taiwan a percentage of their profits.

We’re looking forward to more wonderful and productive events in 2011.

Animals Taiwan was invited to the 100 Years of Taiwan Pet Carnival this year on Jan 8th and 9th. We went armed with merchandise, pamphlets and of course our furry friends. It was a damp and cold couple of days but that didn’t put our volunteers off at all.

We raised over $35,000, and also had adoption offers and new volunteer sign ups. All in all it was a fantastic success.

When he started to see most of her friends getting adopted but not him, he began to get better and better. He is now rarely aggressive and hardly ever growls at people. He was nearly adopted a few times, but still needed a little more socialization to be friendlier towards people. It will take someone who understands how to give a cat some space and let him come to you. We know he will find him forever home soon.

Do you remember our little Simba used to be a very defensive cat with people? He always used to growl when some unknown people try to get close to him, but now he is very playful and friendly if you willing to spend some time with him and let him get used to you.

Because I cannot commit myself to taking care of an animal for his or her whole life or adopting a pet, Animals Taiwan offers us another choice: being a foster home. I can not only help Animals Taiwan to take care of a dog or cat so they can free up some space for more animals who need to be helped, but also enjoy the happiness of having a pet as a companion. Meanwhile, if anything changes in my home environment and I can’t foster for a while, Animals Taiwan always has space for him/her to go back. So I don’t have to worry so much whilst being a foster home. I can also do some training, take pictures, write a diary or even make a blog for him/her. All of this will promote him or her and raise his or her chances of being adopted. I am really happy that I can do something to help the animals. They enrich my life and make it more colorful. The time period of being an Animals Taiwan foster home is very flexible. As long as you make the first step and contact them, you will definitely be able to find a suitable animal for you to foster.

Long John (LJ) has the gentlest of eyes and every time you look at him your heart will melt. He has long been suffering from kidney failure and has been in and out of intensive care for the last year. The vets admire how strong his will to live is and how he still wags his tail even though he must be in pain.

He lost his leg long ago from a vicious gin trap and he now doesn’t have as much energy as the other dogs, but he still likes to communicate with them and have a little game from time to time. He loves to sit on the chairs in the office and if he hears the sound of a plastic bag he’ll come running hoping for some treats. One time he even stole a piece of pizza from a volunteer and had swallowed it right away before we could get it off of him. One of the pictures is of LJ squeezing into the gap of the chair to try and get some food.

LJ has never been afraid of injections and lies calmly and quietly when he has to receive his medication. We know we don’t have much time left with LJ, but we will do everything we can to make his life as comfortable as possible while he still wants to be with us. He has never given up and neither shall we. We would love to see him in a loving home for the remainder of his days where he can get all the attention he needs and show his love through those big beautiful eyes.

Ivy the kitten has also returned from her foster mom. She’s had lots of attention and love and is a wonderful kitty. We believe her being at the centre will increase her chances of adoption.

December through January Happy TailsDecember through January Happy TailsWe are so happy when our rescued animals finally go to loving homes.

Here are a few words and thanks from the animals themselves.

Hi, I‘m Jackson

Here are some pictures of me, relaxing on the sofa, sleeping in my new hammock under the table, and enjoying my new mommy's handmade comfy blanket.

Jackson (and Cobus and Kinuko)Love

Thank you, Animals Taiwan people, for taking such good care of me until I could move in with my new family. Please say hi to my friends in the cat house.

I am eating well, sleeping well, taking a poo and pee well and playing a lot. My favorite TV program is CSI Miami, and I am always very curious when there are cats on TV.

Mom and Dad put in a big new shelf wherethe top is my playground. I enjoy playing with

many new toys, like small blue stuffed 粽子that Mommy's friend made for me and a tiny purple mouse. I have also almost completely destroyed one stick with feathers on the end :)

Lucy is beloved by her Mommy in her new family. Mommy says tenderly, “Lucy is very mischievous. Once she bit the whole family’s shoes to play, but she behaved well and did not destroy them.” Lucy likes to play with her dog brother and bites his tail every time. Lucky Lucy has got mommy’s love and brother dog’s company.

Sparky’s new family loves him so much. Although Sparky is a blind cat, he has gotten used to the new environment and has mastered it in a short time. He immediately plays and befriends other cats and dogs. They play so loudly that his owner, Marie, had to separate them some nights in case neighbors complain.

Lucy has finally found her forever home. We were worried because she is in her senior years that no one would give her a chance, but that hasn’t been the case. After going on a few tryouts to other homes, she has finally found her loving mommy, and has some new friends too.

Armond’s mommy says, “Even though Armond is still fearful in front of strangers, he becomes mischievous and trustful to his owner.” A few days ago, Armond’s owner accidentally let him slip out of the door, but he just ran for a while and then went back quickly. It seems that Armondis happy to find a “real home”.

We are so happy to report that so far 9 of the 18 puppies found in Hsin Tien and Shen Keng have been adopted. Four into one home, two into another and the others were adopted out singularly.

They are all very happy and healthily in their new homes. We have 8 more to go.

Rescues and RecoveriesRescues and RecoveriesA supporter of Animals Taiwan

in Tainan contacted us about a Doberman Pinscher who was wandering the streets and was suffering from malnutrition. Billy has taken him in as a foster parent and we are helping to find George the Doberman Pinscher a new home. He’s very well behaved. We are unsure if he was dumped on the streets or got lost.............. We have worked with Billy to find his owners but to no avail. We are hoping that George will find a new home soon.

Nica, a three month-old puppy was rescued by a supporter of AT. Nica was in a bad way with a very bad skin condition. After treatment, Nica has nearly completely recovered. We are now looking for a loving home for her.

Thomas, a small Maltese, was kept for many years in a very small cage which was exposed to the rain and harsh sun night and day. He was finally rescued from this terrible situation by a nice lady. At first he couldn’t walk well but after treatment and much love he recovered fully. He has now found a loving home where he will never be treated badly again.

Bonnie a beautiful BerneseMountain dog was seen hiding out in some long grass along the river side. The person who spotted her contacted Animals Taiwan and we set out to look for her. It actually took us a few tries to find her as she was laying down hidden amongst the flowers and long grass. She’s friendly but a little scares so she wasn’t too difficult to catch. After bringing her back to the centre she has been spayed and her ear infection has been seen to. We are hoping that this wonderful lady can find her loving home.

Ziva and Button have returned to our centre after being so successfully fostered. Ziva as everyone knows was in a terrible state and we really didn’t know if she’d pull through. However her foster mom worked relentlessly to help her recover and now she is a beautiful and healthy young pup. She’s looking for her forever home. She had a terrible start to life but we strongly believe she’ll find her mommy and daddy soon. And Button was rescued quite some

time ago from the terrible back garden breeder. She had never had much human contact and was very afraid of people. Her voice box had been removed so she doesn’t even have a way to communicate her feelings. Her foster mom also worked wonders and she has become more trusting. She’s still a little shy, but we know with continued love she bounce back and trust completely again. She is also looking for that special family to take her home.
