When Claire discovers a book of spells, she quickly learns that she can’t solve her problems with magic.

Teased by her older brother, bullied by the popular girls at school, and plagued by a blistering pimple that has surfaced on the tip of her nose, 12-year-old Claire Murphy wishes she could shrivel up and die or spontaneously combust. But when a mysterious book appears at her feet in the checkout aisle of a grocery store, Claire is confident all her troubles are over.

Following the instructions carefully, Claire dives nose-first into reeking remedies, rollicking rituals, and silly spells. It’s only when she recklessly disregards the Law of Three that the line between good and evil blurs and Claire must race against time to save not only herself but her sworn enemy, Hollis Van Horn, who she’s placed in mortal danger. As the two girls set out on a mission to locate the author of the book — the elusive White Witch — in order to “cleanse their characters” and reverse the spell, Claire discovers that both people and life are full of surprises.

Marina Cohen is an elementary school teacher in the York Region District School Board. Her previous novels include Ghost Ride, shortlisted for the 2011 Red Maple Award, and Mind Gap. She lives in Markham, Ontario.

Follow four young dancers in their first semester at the Vancouver International Ballet Academy while they work toward careers as professional ballet dancers.

Kaitlyn, Taylor, Alexandra, and Julian are all students at the Vancouver International Ballet Academy, where ballet and drama dominate everyone’s lives.

Kaitlyn was the star at her old school, but the competition at VIBA is fierce and her reputation as a prodigy is threatened. About to turn 15, Taylor is a bit of a scatterbrain. She’s got a lot of potential, but the teachers are frustrated with her lack of confidence, and her troubles at school aren’t helping. Alexandra has done everything right, and she’s determined to become a dancer, but the teachers at VIBA seem to be against helping her. Julian, at 15, loves dance, so going to a professional ballet school seems fun — even if it does take over every aspect of his life.

It’s only their first semester, but these four students will have to push themselves to their limits to make it through their first major performance, The Nutcracker, and continue on the path to becoming professional dancers.

Charis Marsh has been dancing for as long as she can remember and loves the people she meets in the dance world almost as much as the dancing. She has performed in many productions, including The Nutcracker. Currently, she is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Vancouver, her hometown.

When Hawk’s baseball coach tells him how Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run nearby, he asks: what happened to the baseball?

Bullies, baseball, and kids who defy the odds. Hawk, a poor half-Native boy who lives on the street, is eager to go back to school, to play baseball, and to please both his divorced parents. When Mr. Rizzuto, his baseball coach, tells him how the great Babe Ruth, playing on nearby Toronto Island in 1914, hit his first professional home run, the question arises: what happened to the baseball? Did it land in the waters of Lake Ontario and disintegrate over time? Or did someone fish it out?

This is the story of a quest for a baseball treasure, and of a boy finding his own family roots and a place in the big city. A lively baseball tale and more, it shows how kids who seem powerless can work together to take on some of life’s daunting challenges as they deal with schoolroom bullies and street gangs and search for a priceless souvenir from baseball’s legendary past.

Legend has it that a paymaster lost his gold during the War of 1812, and Sam, Eadie, and Ben are determined to find it.

The Jackson family has moved into an old house on Commissioners Road near London, Ontario, and siblings Sam and Eadie discover that an exciting legend involves their new home. Their neighbour Ben tells them that a skirmish in the War of 1812 took place right in front of their house, and during this fight it is thought that an army paymaster lost a chest of gold that has never been recovered.

Sam, Eadie, and Ben decide to “solve” the legend and find the lost gold. But almost 200 years have passed. How will they know where to look? What clues are there to follow? With the help of the Internet, Dave at the library, and some clever sleuthing with maps and a metal detector, they make some progress. But why are all the most likely places to find the gold made off-limits to them by grown-ups?

Jo Shawyer has been writing all her life as a university professor. Now retired, she has turned to writing fiction, creating exciting stories from her wealth of research material. She is the author of Twenty-Dollar Reward and lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Discover the main features of Emancipation Day celebrations and the victories achieved in the push for equality into the 21st century.

On August 1, 1834, 800,000 enslaved Africans in the British colonies, including Canada, were declared free. The story of Emancipation Day, a little-known part of Canadian history, has never been accessible to the teen reader through either the school curriculum or classroom resources, despite its significance in the story of Canada. Talking About Freedom closes this gap by exploring both the background to August 1 commemorations across Canada and the importance of these long-established annual celebrations.

What is the connection between the Caribana festivities in Toronto and emancipation? Why are some communities restoring Emancipation Day to their roster of annual events? Talking About Freedom introduces a range of personalities and happenings through historical facts, memorable personal recollections, vivid images, and detailed narratives. Included are connections to the ongoing struggles of people of African ancestry as they seek to achieve equality, with insightful links woven across the past, present, and future.

Natasha L. Henry is a teacher, an educational curriculum consultant, and a speaker specializing in the development of learning materials that focus on the African experience. Author of Emancipation Day: Celebrating Freedom in Canada, she is also the education specialist for Breaking the Chains: Presenting a New Narrative of Canada’s Role in the Underground Railroad, a project of the Harriet Tubman Institute at York University. She lives in Mississauga, Ontario.

The name James FitzGibbon struck terror in the hearts of U.S. soldiers.

Irish-born James FitzGibbon came to Canada with the 49th Regiment to serve under his hero, Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. After the death of Brock at Queenston Heights and the capture of Fort George in the War of 1812, FitzGibbon spied on the enemy encampment. Armed with his intelligence report, the British launched a surprise night attack, and the Americans were forced to retreat.

With his hand-picked band of Green Tigers, Fitz fought to stop U.S. raiding parties. Laura Secord alerted him to an impending attack at Beaver Dams, and with his 50 men and the support of some First Nations warriors, FitzGibbon bluffed the 500-strong American army into surrender.

Captain Fitz is full of action: the battles on land and lakes, the burning of York (Toronto), the drama of 6,000 American soldiers moving downriver to attack Montreal, only to be defeated at Crysler’s Farm. As well as the pageantry, there’s the misery, suffering, and hunger for honour and glory — all part of the War of 1812.

Enid Mallory grew up near the St. Lawrence River and saw the ghosts of Canadian history passing by. She attended Queen’s University, became a social worker and then a librarian, but always a writer. Her previous books include Coppermine: The Far North of George M. Douglas and Robert Service: Under the Spell of the Yukon. She lives in Peterborough, Ontario.
