“LORD, TEACH US

TO PRAY” A look at the Lords Prayer

• Matthew 6:9-13

• Luke 11:2-4

THE LORDS PRAYER

Recorded in Matthew Chapter 6 and Luke Chapter 11

Taught to the Disciples by Jesus Luke Records - “And he said unto them, When ye pray, say”

Matthew Records - “After this manner therefore pray ye”

A Few differences between the 2 accounts: As in heaven so in earth / in earth, as it is in heaven

Give us day by day / Give us this day

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us / And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors

“For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen”

A SIDE NOTE….

“For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen”

Is disputed as to whether it is an addition to the original prayer.

1 Chronicles 29:10-11

10 Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and

David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and

ever.

11 Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the

victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine;

thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

JOINING WITH THE FATHER

Our Father….

Who is our father?

The Spirit of the Father – Christ “I and my father are one” John 10:30

We join with Jesus when we use this prayer

…which art in heaven,

What is heaven?

Being in the Spirit of God the father – Christ

Hallowed be thy name.

A short prayer of praise

THE FIRST PETITION

Thy Kingdom come.

What is the kingdom?

“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is

within you.” Luke 17:21

When our human spirit and the Spirit of God is put within us, we are then the

Kingdom of God

Thy will be done; as in heaven so in earth.

What is his will?

As all evil and iniquity was expelled from the presence of God – we as that the

same be done in earth (this is also applied to our earthly bodies)

THE SECOND PETITION

Give us day by day our daily bread.

What is that bread?

Our spiritual bread – the word of God

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth

of God” Matthew 4:4

“This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof,

and not die.” John 6:50

“I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but

of hearing the words of the LORD:” Amos 8:11

PRAYER OF PENITENCE / COMMITMENT

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to

us.

What is forgiveness?

While we are freely given forgiveness it is our Christian duty to forgive others

“But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your

trespasses” Matthew 6:15

THE THIRD PETITION

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. ” Romans 8:21

“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.”

Revelations 3:12

Prayers of Petition Luke 22:39-46 Jesus and his personal Prayer

39. And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42. Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46. And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 Jabez and the Prayer of petition

9. And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 10. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me,

and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

2 Chronicles 20:5-12 King Jehoshaphat

5. And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6. And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there

not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? 7. Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for

ever? 8. And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, 9. If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in

this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. 10. And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of

Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; 11. Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12. our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our

eyes are upon thee.

Prayers of Praise 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 David and one of his many prayers of Praise

10. Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. 11. Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine;

thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. 12. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to

give strength unto all. 13. Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

2 Chronicles 20:20-23 King Jehoshaphat

20. And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

21. And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.

22. And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

23. For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an

end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

Prayers of Penitence Daniel 9:3-19 The Prayer of Daniel for the Nations Sins

3. And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: 4. And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them

that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; 5. We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy

judgments: Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

6. Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

Psalm 51:1-12 David’s Prayer of confession

1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou

judgest. 5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit

Prayers of Thanks Job 1:20-21 Jobs Prayer of thanks and praise

20. Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, 21. And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the

name of the LORD. Revelations 11:15-18 The Prayer of the Elders at the end of time

15. And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

16. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, 17. Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast

reigned. 18. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto

thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. Matthew 11:25-27 Jesus thanks his Father

25. At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. 27. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and

he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Prayers of Dedication 1 Samuel 1:9-18 The Prayer of Hannah and Dedication of Samuel

9. So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD. 10. And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore. 11. And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget

thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no rasor come upon his head.

12. And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth. 13. Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. 14. And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15. And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out

my soul before the LORD. 16. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17. Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. 18. And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

Prayers of Intercession 2 Kings 4:32-35 Elisha Prays for the life of a child

32. And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he

stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the

child opened his eyes.

Mark 9:14-29 Jesus Exorcises a spirit

14. And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them. 15. And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. 16. And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? 17. And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18. And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that

they should cast him out; and they could not. 19. He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25. When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come

out of him, and enter no more into him. 26. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29. And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

A Call to Prayer – some thoughts to carry with you… “Give us Day by Day our Daily Bread” Luke 11:3

Prayer is as necessary (or more) than daily food

“..he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks” Daniel 6:10

Just as we have 3 meals a day we should have 3 prayers a day

“Pray without ceasing” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Include God in every single part of your life

“for we know not what we should pray for as we ought” Romans 8:26

Don’t worry if you miss something and don’t feel that you don’t know how to pray

“the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” Romans 8:26

The Holy Spirit will do the translation and present our feeble attempts to talk to God in accordance with his will

“your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him” Matthew 6:7

God knows the most perfect way to give us exactly what we need

“..they love to pray.. that they may be seen of men” Matthew 6:5

Prayer is most about relationship building between you and God not relationships with others

“when thou prayest, enter into thy closet” Matthew 6:6

Private Prayer needs to be just that, private, The closet is your heart

“his ears are open unto their prayers” 1 Peter 3:12

The Lord will hear us when we pray

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” James 5:16

Much is to be gained from prayer
