Term 2 - Week 1

Big Band visits We trust everyone had a lovely holiday and are ready for a busy Term 2. Already we have had a visit to the school by Manly Selective High School with their senior band.

On Wednesday we were treated to an hour of wonderful music played by some very talented Year 10, 11 and 12 students. Our students were a fabulous audience and thoroughly enjoyed the experience especially being able to wander amongst the musicians as they played. Our students danced to ‘Time Warp” and “Shake Your Tail Feather” and participated on percussion with most students keeping the beat on shakers, castanets, Tamborine and various other percussion instruments.

Homework

This term we are trialling a different method of homework which is attached here to the newsletter. This has been introduced to allow a greater choice with homework activities and increase the number of students completing homework each week. Please ask a teacher for further clarification if needed.

Cooking Term 2

This term Years 3-6 will be cooking as part of our Creative Arts lessons. We ask that each student bring in $10 to cover the cost of ingredients. With the assistance of ‘Live Life Well’ funding the school is able to purchase some cooking equipment. Until this arrives please send in a medium sized mixing bowl, large stirring spoon and a oven mitt. A clean apron or shirt will also be required each week - Monday and Tuesday. Please contact the school urgently if your child has an allergy to any food.

What to bring for Monday 5 May:

Mixing bowl Stirring spoon

Fork Tea towel

Biscuit tray Oven Mitt Cooling tray

Lunch box size container to take biscuits home

Fireworks

There will be a Fireworks meeting at school on Wednesday 14 May at 3.10pm.

In preparation for our major fundraiser all families are asked to start sourcing and collecting donations and if you are already aware of prizes to be donated to please chase these up.

Cooler Weather The rooms are getting cool enough some days for a jumper to be needed. Please ensure your children have a jumper and or singlet to keep them warm. We often have a cool breeze blowing around the school, especially in the morning, from which your homes may be more protected.

NAPLAN – a skills snapshot If your child is in Year 3, 5, 7, or 9, they’ll sit NAPLAN tests on May 13-15. And despite what you may have heard there’s no need to panic or start an intensive study program with your child. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/homework-tips/all-about-naplan NAPLAN is short for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. Unlike the Higher School Certificate, NAPLAN tests aren't something that kids can truly study for, and there's "nothing riding on" the test for your child. Instead, NAPLAN is simply a snapshot of the skills your child has developed up to this point in their education, which will allow teachers to focus on giving the right support to students as the year continues. The skills which NAPLAN examines include:

Reading Writing Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and

punctuation) Numeracy.

Please assist us in the smooth running of these days by ensuring students are at school on time.

Media Release 24 April 2014

Avoid copping it sweet in school zones! It is the start of term two with children returning to school from Monday! You’re out of routine and in a mad rush, so you drop off the kids in a no stopping zone. The Ranger has seen you and issues you with a Penalty Infringement Notice. Don’t give them a mouthful, you’ve been warned. If you’ve done something wrong and you get caught – you will be fined. There is an expectation within our community that there needs to be laws regarding safety for children. School zones are a way of providing that protection. Enforcing speed limits in school zones lies with the NSW Police and the enforcement of parking restrictions is the responsibility of Council Rangers. Our Rangers keep the community safe and that includes patrolling school zones and parking areas around schools. “As a community we need to work together to improve traffic movement, safety and parking management around all schools”, says Ballina Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer, Jodie Hewett. “Making a commitment to parking safely around schools will help reduce the risk of children being injured or killed.” Recent inspections of local schools revealed parents frequently endangering the lives of children by:

Stopping and parking in bus zones and no stopping zones;

Double parking;

Stopping longer that two-minutes in a ‘No Parking’ zone; and

Stopping on or within 20 metres of a pedestrian crossing or children’s crossing; “Despite continued warnings and fines issued by Council’s Rangers, some drivers are continuing to ignore the messages. Parking offences in school zones carry heavy fines and loss of demit points, but more importantly it endangers young lives,” Ms Hewitt emphasised. If you are a parent or carer, please ensure you follow the road rules around schools. Allow enough time to drop off and pick up your children, without rushing. Often it is less stressful and safer to park a little bit further away from the school gate and walk to drop off or collect your child. “Children are extremely vulnerable road users because of their size, unpredictability and inability to judge speed and distance. Until they are eight years of age, you should always hold a child's hand when crossing the road, in the car park and when you are on the footpath or shared path” Ms Hewitt added. If you experience a problem with illegal or dangerous parking at your school please contact Ballina Shire Council on 6686 4444. Experience The Magic Of Hosting

Every year, families throughout New South Wales invite students from around the world into their homes, and gain a taste of another culture. The Strupitis-Haddrick family from NSW share their joys of hosting Belgian student Magali, as they farewell her back home to Belgium: “Magali has been a delight. She has fitted in with our family so well and we have loved every minute we have had together. She feels like a member of our family and in our hearts she will always be. The best part has just been sharing company across cultures and languages and adapting to new relationships. While we have had some wonderful trips together, it is the time at home doing everyday things which has been so enjoyable and rewarding. We will definitely keep in touch. Thank you sharing your life with us Magali. Travel safely and enjoy re-uniting with your family and friends in Belgium. We look forward to the next time we meet.” New Students Arriving In July.
