Week 3 Term 1, 2019
WELCOME BACK Welcome back to all students and their families. This term will certainly be a busy one for our teachers as we prepare for Hernani Public School’s participation in the External Validation Process, finalise the 2018 Annual Report, complete the Electronic Copyright survey and review our student reporting process, as well as our normal day to day teaching. At this term’s P&C meeting I look forward to sharing our revised reporting system and providing a more detailed overview of “Program Achieve-You Can Do It.” On behalf of our school community I extend our best wishes to Cody. Students have sent their “Get Well” messages and cards to Cody and we are all thinking of Cody and his family during this challenging time.

TEACHING & LEARNING AT HERNANI To commence Term 2 our focus has been ANZAC Day and students have been learning about the significance of this important Australian Day. The annual visit by members of the Dorrigo RSL Sub-
Branch is always valued and this year Barbara and Barry both shared their personal experiences, serving our Nation and family history. Students learnt about aircraft carriers, the Tower of London, poppies and lots more.
Hernani’s School Captains thanking our visitors from the Dorrigo R.S.L Sub-Branch
Following a shared reading of “The Last Anzac” during our literacy time prior to our RSL visitors arriving, students wrote about Anzac Day, and what they knew about this day and what they had learnt from our story. These were shared with Barbara and Barry. We trust you enjoy the following extracts: “A.N.Z.A.C. We remember our people who went to war. We baked ANZAC biscuits at school and sometimes we make poppies.” By Cooper, Year 2

“ A.N.Z.A.C Day ANZAC Day is a commemoration of the war. The monument in Dorrigo has a statue of a person that fought at war, a soldier. Most towns have a memorial. Alec Campbell was the very last A.N.Z.A.C. His age was one hundred and two. We don’t have any A.N.Z.A.C.’s anymore. He died in 2002. After the war red poppies started to grow in the battle fields.“ By Beau, Year 4 Anzac Day will continue to be a focus during the next two weeks as students complete follow up literacy activities in response to the picture books “The ANZAC Billy” and “Bess The Brave Warhorse.” Please take time to look at our student work displays in the BER classroom. MOTHER’S DAY
Best wishes to all our Mum’s for Mothers Day on
Sunday.
EASTER HAT PARADE
Congratulations to students upon a fantastic display
of creative design ideas. Our Easter hats were
fantastic and this was a lovely fun, surprise sharing
activity as no-one had seen each other’s hats.
Students were visibly proud of their own and other’s
efforts. Great job Hernani!
Thank you to parents who were able to join us for
our Easter Hat parade and sharing of both circus
skills and STEM coding learning experiences.
If you did not get to see our hats please look at the
display in the verandah area of the main classroom.
STEM SHARE LEARNING ACTIVITIES
After the Easter Hat Parade our students enjoyed the
chance to share their newly developing coding skills.
We all worked collaboratively to share coding skills
as we programmed our Blue Bots to complete a set
course.
Typically- this is a Stage 3 Learning Experience…but not at
Hernani Kindergarten to Year 4 and Pre-schoolers!

Hernani students love their new STEM kits. They
have been focusing on learning new coding skills to
control their “Blue Bot” robots. “If you don’t tell it what
to do it just sits there!”
By Week 8, when we have to return the STEM kits,
students should be able to direct their Blue Bot to any
given point, and return to them. Thanks to the STEM
folks for a great learning initiative.

Challenge- Who followed the instructions?
RETHINK, REUSE, RECYCLE
Setting up our first worm farm
Hernani’s successful grant to facilitate a positive
approach to waste management is well underway.
Students have identified waste management
initiatives such as colour coded bins, a school worm
farm and compost system.
Recycling paper waste in our compost
Another way in which we can recycle our daily food scraps
Our next step will be purchasing hand towels for
students and staff, as this was an area that was
identified by students earlier in Term 1 as a major
contributor to our paper waste. This will reduce the
significant number of paper towels that our school
uses on a daily basis. Paper towels will only be used

on Combined Schools Days and for specific
circumstances.
ADOPT A FARMER
Hernani Public School’s students have decided that
they think it is important for our school to support the
‘Adopt a Farmer’ initiative which is being held this
Wednesday, 8th May. As such, this Wednesday all
students and staff will be wearing mufti to school and
bringing a gold coin donation to support this
important fundraiser. The Department of Education
is supporting this initiative and the ambitious goal is
to raise $800,000 nationally.
Our students will also be writing directly to farmers.
PROGRAM ACHIEVE –YOU CAN DO IT
It is very pleasing to listen to students talking about
the skills that they have been learning about in our
weekly “Program Achieve” lessons. Today
Kindergarten students Molly and Charlotte told Mrs
Winkel “You have to be like Connie Confidence and
Pete Persistence,” when she was faced with the
challenge of fixing the heater.
In the near future visitors to our school will see
displays of brightly colour coded keys with the labels
Persistence, Resilience, Getting Along, Organisation
and Confidence.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY BOWRAVILLE

Public School at the annual PSSA District Cross

EARN & LEARN Hernani Public School is participating in this initiative. Please find attached sticker collection sheets for your use. Our Collection Box is located in the BER classroom. We also have boxes both in Armidale and Coffs Harbour. Thank you for supporting our school.
On Friday 17th May students and staff will meet at the
Hernani Hall at 8:30am or Hernani Tennis Courts at
8:45am.
FRIENDLY REMINDERS Being Healthy @ School: Parents are requested to remember that our school policy is for students not to bring lollies to school. A healthy, nutritous lunch box is important. Our “Live Life Well @ School” flyers provide new ideas for daily lunches and we will regularly share these with families in our Newsletter. Staff at Hernani are happy to toast sandwiches, and heat some items for students to have a warm lunch at school. We appreciate students being prompt in requesting their lunch to be toasted etc and remembering their manners. This is not normal practice for school staff and there may be times when a teacher does not have time to toast student sandwiches.

Items for Crunch and Sip, do not only need to be fruit, vegetables are also encouraged. We have noticed that some students are using this break as their breakfast time and we will only be allowing students to eat a small snack break. This is not a meal time! Staff will not be cutting up items at this time and students are asked to bring any items for Crunch and Sip, ready to eat. Please remember, no juicy, messy items. Save oranges etc for your child’s lunch or recess please. In the cooler months students will need to ensure that they have warm clothing every day. School hats must be worn. We have a sun safe policy “No Hat No Play! Attendance: Students are expected to attend school every day and only be absent for justifiable reasons, such as illness or attending medical appointments. Your assistance with ensuring that we can update our class roll is important, if an explanation is not provided within 7 days , your child’s absence has to be recorded as an “Unjustified Absence” and teachers cannot change this status after this period. Student Medication: Students that have to be given medication during school hours must have a “Prescribed Medication” form completed by parents to consent to staff administering medication. Please note that all medications need to be in their original containers. Changed Collection Arrangements: Parents are requested to notify the school of any changes to your child’s transport arrangements. This is particularly important and in unexpected situations a phone call is greatly appreciated. Parent Teacher Meetings: Should you wish to discuss a particular concern, please request a meeting, or contact staff, prior to 8.30 and or after 3.00pm in order to minimise disruption to our teaching day. Thank you. Some meetings will be able to be held on the day, others may have to be scheduled for a more convenient time. School Hours :Parents are requested to try to ensure that our school hours from 8.30am to 3.00pm are respected. Students benefit from arriving at school prior to 9.00am, the first 30 minutes before class are important as it ensures students have time to play
and reconnect with their friends. We encourage parents to help their child be ready for each school day by arriving at this time , having had a substanial breakfast and ready to commence their learning for the day. Students are encouraged to arrive at 8.30 am or shortly afterwards. Being at school prior to 9.00am means that we do not have delays to our lesson starting time. Time prior to 8.30 and after 3.00pm is spent in class preparation and colleagial discussion re: teaching and learning at Hernani. This term in particular, we will be spending significant time after school preparing for our External Validation submission and we request that parents arrive promptly to collect students. Thank you. Should you chose to stay in the school grounds after 3.00pm for a friendly chat please be aware that your child’s supervision is your responsibility and school rules still apply.
Out of bounds areas are to be observed
Shoes are to be worn at all times
If staff are meeting in buildings please ensure that there is minimal disruption
We thank you for your assistance.
