What a phenomenal effort by the P&C fete committee. Their months of hard work, preparation, canvassing for sponsors and donations, planning for stalls, rides and food all paid off and the result was – the most successful Engadine Public School fete ever!! Many, many thanks to those on the committee, as well as the parents, friends, students and staff who supported and volunteered on the day. It was my first EPS fete and I was delighted by the great sense of community. Due to such an incredible financial boost, our school can now embark on a couple of projects that have been patiently waiting in the wings: an extension on our playground equipment and the establishment of a whole school Aboriginal and bush-tucker garden. I will keep you all up to date with plans for these projects as we progress. P&C fundraising is solely for the purpose of supporting our school as a whole; to provide learning opportunities and resources to enrich the lives of all students at EPS. At the end of last term each student took home a Semester One report. After a great deal of research, feedback from parents and investigation of examples of best practice from across NSW Public Schools, we devised a new report format. This new format sought to report to parents in jargon-free, clear language and give an easy to understand account of what each child can do and is working towards in Maths and English. We now seek your feedback on the new report format and invite you to complete a short survey at the link below: https://forms.gle/UuVPAF4YFLS4MrfT9 Your responses and feedback enable us to review and refine our processes so that we are always working towards excellence.

Dear parents/carers, I think this week we are all still riding on a high from the success of our school fete last weekend! What a

phenomenal effort by the P&C fete committee.

Our Father’s Day stall this week was in full swing, so thank you to Savy, Valerie and Maree for all their organisation and to our parent helpers who tried to make sure every child chose thoughtfully and siblings didn’t double up – not an easy task!

To all our Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles, carers and father figures in the lives of our children – I wish you a fantastic father’s day! The role you play, particularly in today’s society, is so important: you play a pivotal role in raising the next generation of children with values of respect, gender equality and violence prevention.

This Father’s Day White Ribbon is calling on fathers and father-figures to take the time to talk with their children about what it means to be a father. Research shows that fathers and male role models can have a huge influence in inspiring and shaping a more socially aware and equal generation. White Ribbon Ambassador, Clint Newton says:

“Since having my daughters, I have learnt that my role as a father and as a man is to lead and guide rather than simply protect and provide. In my view, you demonstrate significant strength through vulnerability and compassion.”

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate the fact that families and fatherhood comes in many shapes and sizes – congratulations to you all for the positive work you do with your children. Enjoy spending time with your children, grandchildren and special children in your lives – you might even be lucky enough to score breakfast in bed!!

Keep smiling

Sara Swift, Principal

Mobile Phones At School There has been an increasing number of students bringing mobile phones to school. Parents please be advised that if your child does bring a mobile phone to school they are to drop it to the front office upon arriving and can pick it up at the end of the day. Please discuss this with your child and reinforce the importance of not having their phone in the playground or classroom. Fiver for A Farmer SAVE THE DATE Thursday 26th September Following on from last year, once again Engadine Public School will be supporting this worthwhile cause. Students are invited to come to school dressed as a farmer, or in any mufti clothing. Donations are $5 per family. More details to come. Tell Them From Me Survey This term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. This survey will help our school better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will help the school identify what works to improve student outcomes. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to school by Friday 6th September. More information about the survey and the research is available in English on the CESE website: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

Therapists At School There are four key steps for parents who seek to have services delivered in school: 1. Ask the principal in writing 2. Discuss the details with the principal or class

teacher. 3. Principal considers your request. 4. If agreed, the service provider needs to enter into

an agreement with the school and meet important legal requirements.

The principal has discretion to decide whether or not an external service provider can enter the school and how arrangements will be managed. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis considering the individual circumstances of the student. Any decision takes into account the educational needs and priorities of the student including access to the curriculum, the impact of the student’s learning programs, the school’s operational context and duty of care obligations towards all staff and students. NDIS guidelines state that: “NDIS-funded therapy services should generally not be delivered at school…Nor should children or young people be taken out of school to receive these supports.” However, there may be occasions where the delivery of an NDIS-funded service at the school may be

appropriate. If you are unsure, please contact the principal to discuss the nature of the therapy or service you are considering.

STAFF CAR PARK Please note there is no access to the

staff car park under any circumstances.

Parents and carers we ask that no students are dropped off or picked up in the staff car park at any time. This is for the safety of everyone – thank you for your cooperation.

Electricity Safety Week

Next week, our school is participating in Electricity Safety Week 2019. Each class will have a visit from Darren Grant from Ausgrid who will speak to our students about safe electrical practices. Below are some safety tips for our families: • Electricity is an important part of our daily lives,

so it’s important that we all switch onto safety. • Electricity substations and power equipment are

all around us – they are behind fences, in buildings, or near footpaths. Warning signs are displayed for your own protection, so please stay clear.

• A reminder for families to play in open spaces away from electricity poles, towers and powerlines. Look up before you climb or fly a kite

• Metal is a conductor of electricity. Never put metal objects in a toaster or power point. Electricity could travel up the metal object into your body.

• Always be on the lookout for dangers in and around your home. This could be anything from a faulty electrical lead to a ‘stacked’ power point. If you need something fixed, call a licensed electrician.

• If you see a fallen powerline, there is a strong chance it is still alive. Stay at least 8 metres away from a fallen powerline and anything it may be touching

• Water and electricity don’t mix. Keep water away from electrical appliances and power cords.

Positive Behaviour For Learning As part of the process of Positive Behaviour for Learning at Engadine Public School we are updating our school expectations to reflect the values, needs and goals of our current students and their families, and our staff. In order to set clear, realistic and consistent expectations for our students we require your feedback to identify a set of school rules that best represent our school in 2019. We would like to hear from parents and families the VALUES and QUALITITIES that you consider to be most important for your child at Engadine Public School. We are also surveying staff and students and will keep you updated of the results, as well as other upcoming PBL action at Engadine Public School. It would be appreciated if you could take the time to complete the activity on the back page of this newsletter and return it to school by Friday 6th September 2019. We look forward to a busy year full of positive change at Engadine Public School. State Touch Football Championships Chelsea F from year 6 spent four days this week in Mudgee, as part of the Senior Girls Sydney East Zone Touch Football team. The team were competing against another 12 sides and finished 6th overall. Chelsea scored two tries! Well done Chelsea!

To the whole school community for coming and supporting the P&C by helping out on the stalls, baking cakes for the cake stall (which made a record profit!) and simply being there on the day and taking part in everything. A special thank you to the staff that also came and helped on the

day. Your support was greatly appreciated and shows what a great school community we have here at EPS.

From the Fete Committee

We are so excited to share the news of our Family Fun Day success. The P&C fete committee, parents, friends, students and staff who organised, helped out and supported on the day should be extremely proud. A sincere thanks also to our sponsors and local businesses who donated prizes for our raffle and silent auction. We have made an all-time record of $23,000 profit from the day – the most successful fete on record!! You will be pleased to know that those funds will come directly back to the school to enable us to go ahead with some exciting projects that have been on our wish list. We will keep you posted on how these funds have been used to support our school and students. Well done everyone!

Congratulations Baxter who was the closet guess (232) to the correct number (235) of balls in the Audi! Baxter and his family have won an Audi for the weekend!!

We were lucky to have speed artist Sarah Rowan come along and paint for us. Sarah whipped up this masterpiece in under 15 minutes and then it was auctioned off, with all proceeds going to our school. Congratulations to the Lachlan and the Wilding family who were the highest bidders!!
