LORNE “Gump” DAER

April 06, 1947 – April 8, 2011 Hometown – New Hamburg, ON

The 2011 class of inductees includes one of the game’s truly ubiquitous ball-park faces of the past four decades, the late Lorne Daer. “Gump” was a knuckle – ball artist, change – up specialist who baffled batters as a member of the Woodstock Twins, Bengals and Tornadoes and Waterloo CHYM’rs

“Gump” was born in Goderich and spent his early years in Auburn where he embraced hockey. The Canadian sportsing lore of young goaltenders using Eatons catalogues as leg pads rings true for “Gumper”, who guarded the goal old-style, ignoring the need to wear a mask similar to NHL netminder Worsley with whom he shared the revered nickname. He backstopped his team to the final game at the legendary Young Canada Hockey Week in Goderich and played his minor hockey years in the Salt Town on the shore, winning an Ontario Championship with his Goderich bantam team.

He enjoyed fastball as a youngster in Auburn, but it was after he moved from his hometown that he started his pitching career. His change-up tantalized opposing batters and was his “go-to” pitch that was the foundation of his many successful seasons on the mound.

He was a key cog in Ontario championship teams with Woodstock – the 1978 Intermediate title that required seven playoff rounds including the final against Schumacher, and the 1980 Senior B crown with the Woodstock Tornadoes.

His ever-present toothpick and his penchant for fun did not take away from his commitment to ferocity on the mound nor his value as a teammate to so many players across southern Ontario.

Lorne is survived by his wife June, daughter Laura (Todd Winkworth) and son Jason (Leighann).

ADAM SMITH Two-way all-star Born – December 29, 1964

Hometown – Hagersville, ON

Pitching may have dominated the game over the years, but that did not deter one of the games great “warriors” from making both defense and offence a highlight reel of his career. From humble beginnings, Adam Smith proved that farmers know how to play this great game when he hooked up with Mt. Hope A’s in 1986, and was a stand-out middle infielder in ensuing seasons in Ontario in Burlington, Owen Sound, Toronto, Oshawa and Kitchener-Waterloo, and in the USA in Green Bay WI and Decatur IL.

In the competitive ISC “Addie” was a 5 time ISC All-World player with 3 different teams (Toronto Gators, Decatur Pride and K-W Hallman Twins), two times Champion with Toronto Gators, (plus 6 other top three finishes). He earned a .322 lifetime ISC batting average, was the leading hitter in 2001 with a formidable .583 average, batted in the most runs (11) in 1995 and is one of only 5 players with 100 lifetime hits.

He won four Softball Canada gold medals and as an eleven year, stellar member of Canada’s National Team (1989-2000), he earned two Pan-Am gold medals, and played at three World Championships, including a contributing role in Canada’s last ISF gold medal in 1992.

Adam is one of the greatest second basemen of his or any generation of the game, and was a fearless competitor who excelled in every facet of the game. Slick fielding, (combining with shortstop Chris Jones as one of the best double-play tandems in the history of the game), power hitting, high average and in his prime, one of the fastest players in the game, are all acknowledged by team-mates and adversaries.

Adam and Lauren have three children – Jon 27, Rachel 20 and Eryn 11.

WELL DONE COMMITTEE! The term “legend” may be used loosely in many contexts. Given the contributions to fastball by the 31 individuals recognized in the eight years of this event, the word, synonymous with “fabled, famous, historic, celebrated, prominent” is used appropriately for the “Legends of Fastball” program.

If pitching is the benchmark of great teams then no moundsman is more deserving of being recognized as a Legend than the great “Chubb” Tangaroa, the first international player to be honoured at the Legends Classic. Chubb, another of the great New Zealand pitching fraternity plied his trade stateside beginning in 1981. His résumé includes toeing the rubber for the legendary Long Beach CA Night Hawks, Lancaster PA Chameleons, Denton TX Kings, Rohnert Park CA Guanella Brothers, Decatur IL Pride and Broken Bow NE Travelers. Chubb earned ISC All World honours in three successive years (1989-91) with the Quanella Brothers, and as well was a 3 – time ASA National Champion, twice with the Decatur IL Pride.

Internationally, Chubb was a member of the New Zealand Black Sox national team for 22 years (1982-2004), 16 years as a pitcher, and 6 as pitching coach, including the three peat ISF Championships in ’96, ‘2000 and 2004. Chubb recalls ISC Hall of Famers Bill Boyer, Mark Sorenson and Tim Wahl among the toughest batters that he faced.

Chubb was inducted into the New Zealand Softball Hall of Fame in 2004, recognized with the country’s Award of Merit in 2005, and last month was inducted into the Unison Hawke’s Bay Sports Hall of Fame.

DOUG DAVIES Remembering the Coach June 18,1937 – January 18, 2011 The Legends of Fastball Classic is proud to dedicate the 2011 tournament in the memory, or memories, as there were many, of Doug Davies. The local sporting community lost one of its true characters with the passing of Doug, renowned as a longtime coach, critic, score-keeper, volunteer and beloved curmudgeon. For

decades “Coach” befuddled umpires in the Kitchener Fastball League as the leader of the formidable Tien Hoa Inn powerhouse. His rakish style of questioning calls while providing a personal perspective to contents of the rule book, kicking dirt and instigating trouble was all part of his master plan to confuse officials and opposition alike – simply his way of rallying his troops and having fun. In that irony that mystifies us all, when Doug wasn’t coaching in a game, he was often behind the plate “callin’ ‘em as he saw them” - as an umpire! In his stellar professional career, he was a long-serving manager for the Federal Government at Canada Immigration - he was good at that too. He was thrilled to be asked to serve as a coach with the Waterloo Twins in the late 1990s and took exceptional pride in standing in the coaching box at his first ISC World Tournament in 1998. Loved by colleagues, fastball people, family and friends, he was as compassionate as he was cantankerous, genuine as he was flashy, and as honest as he was devilish. Beloved dad to daughter Jennifer and son Daniel, and “Grumpy” to seven grandchildren, he is greatly missed by the fastball community, his Canada Immigration peers and his life-line friends at AA.

“LEGENDS” CRITERIA Selections of individuals who have been afforded recognition as part of the “Legends” tournament are based on varying contributions and for their fastball impact.

Many considered for nomination as a “Fastball Legend” participated in the game in by-gone eras, when the opportunity to be selected to a national team were limited. Players who had an outstanding career in the Ontario area – Dan Donahue,

Bill Fidlin, Chuck Hendricks, Barry Musselman, Doug Neil, Dick Parker, Brian Stere, Dan “Doc” Werby, Dan Yantzi

Players who represented Canada with distinction at the international level – Bob McKinnon, Brian Paton, Ray Tilley

Players who had an out standing career in women’s softball, at either the local, national or international level – Marg Skillings, Karen Snelgrove, Lori Sippel

Individuals who made a significant contribution to the game such as coaches, sponsors, administrators, media - Terry Baytor, Bob “Bongo” Baird, Bruce Bierman, Jack Fireman, Bill Horne, Bruce Huff, Larry Lynch, George Ryder and Joe Todd

True, unquestioned legends of the game – Dick Hames, Pete Landers, Steve Virag, Darren Zack

DALY Division HARRAH’S MILDMAY SEEDINGS AND ODDS TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

1) Jarvis Travelers (3-2) – The Travelers ended the Kitchener Hallman Rivershark Twins quest to three-peat at the 2010 ISC, and have added to their depth over the winter. Returning pitchers Aussie Adam Folkard and Jarvis/Hagersville hometown boy Andrew Phibbs welcome former fire-balling Twin Don Scott. The mound trio is the primary reason the Travelers are ranked #1 for 2011. So, let’s go with the crowd and pick the Travelers as the favoured for this weekend. 2) Midland Explorers (4-1) – A combination of familiar faces with a few additions to the roster places the Explorers in the top ten, a familiar ranking for this well-established squad. Gone is Frank Cox, providing opportunity for veteran pitchers Grant Patterson and Mike Joseph to jockey for the lead role, along with versatile newcomer Greg Garrity, who when not pitching, will bring power to the middle of the batting order. Midland will be building for 2012, when the Explorers will once again be host team for the ISC World Championship. 3) KW Cubs (12-1) - Cubbies will have opportunity this weekend to account for an ISC top 20 ranking and with a pitching staff of Scott Wagar, and locals Jeremy deBelleval, Ryan French and Brad Thomson, the rotation provides several options. The team has solid chemistry and should make the playoff round on Sunday. 4) Wellington Sox (17-1) – This could be the surprise team of the weekend, with key match-up against the rival Cubs. With a deep pitching roster of Todd Uhrig, Nic Goetz, Jason Dawdy and hometowner Mel Ross, advancing to Sunday is a great possibility, but it will be difficult to squeak into to the semi-finals unless bats come alive when opportunities present themselves. 5) Quyon Combat Flyers (25-1) – Great to have fastball friends from Quebec participate in the Flyers debut at the Legends tourney. Every game will be a test, and pitching staff of Chad Hargrove, Joran Graham and GTA’s Drew Hathaway will require solid defence behind them to make a mark in the winner’s column. Great addition to the competition, but a playoff appearance will require a combination of bringing their “A” game, some timely hits and a healthy dose of luck. Bonne chance!!!

HARRAHS MILDMAY SEEDINGS AND ODDS TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIP 1) Chicago/New York (3-2) - A powerhouse squad that has tooled up over the winter with addition of Kiwi Catcher Patrick Shannon who will work his magic in calling games for lanky southpaw Aussie Andrew Kirkpatrick, augmented by Bryan Newton and Bill Hillhouse. Lots of “pop” in the line-up with an un-ending list of players who can “take it deep”. A Sunday showdown with Jarvis should decide the hardware and the Legends title. 2) New Zealand Black Sox (3-1) – Never to be underestimated, it’s early in the multi-year plan to build the Black Sox into a contender to regain the ISF World title in 2013. New faces in the line-up will be given opportunity to earn a coveted spot in the Sox line-up as the team is assembled with machine-like precision. Jeremy Manley and Thomas Cameron anchor a pitching staff complemented by Penese Iosefo and Nathan Taikato. Line-up is note-worthy more-so by who’s not listed. 3) Elmira Erb Electric Expos (9-1) – Expos fan club grew last year as the team played solid ball to finish 14th at the ISC with a solid line-up of Waterloo regional players. Mound chores fall to go-to hurler Dan Martin and Casey Halstead. A solid round-robin could provide opportunity to advance to the semi-finals in the cross-over. 4) Owen Sound Verge Selects (15-1) – the Bay City softball program has re-vamped the last couple of years and the Selects continue their upward climb to re-establish the Georgian Bay club in the ISC. Great opportunity this weekend to enhance their current 12th place seeding in the rankings. The summer of 2011 beckons as a benchmark season at all levels of Selects competition – Midget, Junior and Senior, with abundant use of the taxi-squads in fielding the most competitive line-ups. Familiar faces on the mound with veteran Jamie Simpson and cohorts Andy Skelton and the Leahys – Luke and Matt. 5) Port Elgin Blue Devils (19-1) – The Blue Devils have their comfort zone in local league play, but can provide a line-up not to be taken lightly by ISC ranked teams. Pitchers Scott Smith and Rob Fawcett are complemented by Matt Hamilton and Scott Christie, and team will need a few “rabbits out of the hat” to scramble to the playoff round on Sunday.

EVENTS UPDATE 2011-12 The International Softball Congress has publicly confirmed its host locations for 2011-2012. This year’s event will be held for seven days Sunday to Saturday August 14-20, 2011 in Quad Cities, IL/IA, the sister cities of Bettendorf, Davenport, Moline and Rock Island. Rock Island IL had

hosted the tournament 10 times (1961-69, 1973) and more recently, as part of Quad Cities, was the host venue for the 2009 championship. Midland MI, the Explorers Team and Booster Club and Host Committee, riding on the coat-tails of their huge success in staging the 2010 tournament, have recently been affirmed as the Host Venue for next year’s event, scheduled for Midland’s Emerson Park for nine days August 10-18, 2012. The facility was a superb venue for the 2010 championship and featured several new components, including a Master’s Division and was undoubtedly a “slam-dunk” decision for the ISC brass.

LEGEND HONOREE BRIAN PATON TO BE INDUCTED INTO ISC HOF

Brian Paton, an original 2004 Legend Honoree, will receive appropriate recognition with his induction into the ISC Hall of Fame on Sunday August 14 in Moline, IL as part of the 2011 ISC Championship. As a highly effective and feared lead-off batter and a superb outfielder, Brian was a key cog in the Toronto Gators supremacy in the mid-90’s (ISC MVP in 1995 and 4 time All-World competitor) and was a long-time member and captain of Team Can-ada.
