dogs had the typical features of autoimmimuc liemolytic anemia as seen in man.

A n eluate PrePar from the red cells of dog number R 14511 sensitized

    normal

canine erythrocytes, further substantiating the presence of an eryth-

rocyte autoantihody. A lthough each dog

    responded initially to prednisone

    therapy, 4

had recurrent hemolytic episodes and eventually underwent

splenectomy. T hereafter, anemia was not a major problem until azotemia ap-

peared. I n contrast to w hat is usually found in human beings with this con-

litiofl, the direct antiglobulin test in these clogs always became negative

shortly after the institution of therapy. T he reappearance of a positive anti-

globulin test in those clogs which were in remission was soon followed by a

    recurrent attack of hemolytic anemia.

T he next most common feature of this canine disease w as thrombocytopenia.

    T his abnormality was

found in 6 animals and w as associated w ith an overt

hemorrhagic tendency in four. T he bleeding manifestations were char-

acterized by easy bruising, ecchymoses, petechiae, and active bleeding from

mucous membranes. Bone marrow aspirates of 2 of these thrombocytopenic

dogs contained normal numbers of megakaryocytes. T his finding, together

    with

    the

prompt response to corticosteroicis suggests that the thrombocyto-

Penia in these dogs is analogous to the idiopathic IT P) variety seen in man.
