FROM THE EDITOR

When I start by saying that I’ve taken up a job as a stripper, I should explain the actual job clearly! I’ve got started on the total paint removal from the Alvis Grey Lady project car. Even after the first day, I was tired, illustrating that along with mechanical work on vehicles, it takes hard work to repair and restore cars whatever their age. I reckon I’ve got a couple of months work ahead, allowing for about 20 hours per week on the job. In order to fit that work in, I am backing off a couple of other interests, such as shopping and housework!

As regards leisure activities, the last few weeks has seen a selection of events to attend. Both the Moonta Show ‘n Shine and the SYP run from Yorketown are to be highly commended. The latter event was organised by the YP Vintage, Veteran & Classic Motor Cycle Club and we were made to feel most welcome. There was a wide range of vehicles, plus a good number of younger entrants, illustrating just how much interest there is on the YP for historic motoring. Let’s hope we can keep up the liaison with other local clubs

.Having just come back from a MAPS Committee meeting, there’s a few points fresh in my mind.. Although some may be discussed at the coming April meeting, here’s a selection.

It is proposed that a specific leaflet be produced so as to give potential members a concise background to the MAPS club

A new cream log book has been introduced, so you’ll see those gradually coming into distribution.

Following on from some notes in the Whyalla club’s “ Grease Rag” newsletter, it appears that when you complete a log

book entry for a day’s use, all drivers should sign the entry

For the next half year campout, Burra, Clare and Jamestown are under consideration.

Venues and dates for the Handover and Christmas luncheons are under review.

A means of enabling a limited number of Committee members to share the members email addresses is to be looked at. This will enable others, such as the Secretary and the Events Coordinator to send out their own updates and reminders. The fact that the Editor’s lack of internet access for 10 days brought about this suggestion from me.

Profiles and newsletter content; despite regular reminders, getting profiles on members, new and long standing remains a challenge, as does getting unsolicited event reports and general articles. However, the best way to get to know other members, both new and long standing, is to get along to the array of events and meetings.

So plenty of plans, events, new members and new cars coming to MAPS, One new vehicle is the Jaguar 3.4 Mark 2 just bought by Ian Burman. I’m looking forward to a drive in it soon..

In the meantime Mary and I have several trips planned, such as HMVC’s British Classics Tour in May and the NARC Burra to Morgan Reenactment Run in July. Look for details of these in this and future editions of the MAPS Review.

Finally, best wishes to a number of MAPS members not firing on all cylinders of late, such as Jean Sewell and Margaret Hudson.

SHOW REPORTS

Well, I thought I should get a couple of reports while the events are still fresh in my mind. Perhaps there was a prize for any MAPS members attending both Maitland Show on the Saturday and the Moonta Show ’n Shine the following day. If so, I’ll share it with Richard Bastian who came over to Maitland to collect the MAPS signage Saturday afternoon for use the following day.

MAITLAND SHOW Saturday March 10th.

Despite a dozen hands going up at the March meeting, actual vehicles on the days were eight MAPS cars and one BMW solo motorcycle owned by Rex Kakoschke. One colourful addition to the line up was a fine red International truck owned by a local farmers-Mattchoss/Daniel I believe.

We were promised hot weather and it arrived around 35 degrees by mid day. President Joe Ingram brought along the 1925 Dodge with wife Bev at the helm of the 450SLC. Led by the truck packed with youngsters of the Maitland Lutheran ,School, the cars, a good number of vintage tractors floats and an assortment of boats, fire trucks etc. made their way to the Oval..

We parked in the usual spot, but sadly this year we did not have the usual outstanding display of the Wood family’s Model T Fords to join us . Roger Wood had tendered his apologies the previous day.

Fortunately we had the two club gazebos under which to take some shelter– thanks Joe.

Maisie the dog and I went to watch the racing and diving pigs. A very popular area was the lunch room with an excellent two course meal on offer. I began to wonder if we’d gone into local Liberal Party HQ, with prospective MP Fraser Ellis, Federal MP Rowan Ramsey and the Hon. Alan Ferguson all present. Probably better food than they’d get in Parliament!

MOONTA SHOW ‘N SHINE REPORT

A long day for many, both entrants and organisers, but very successful; over 125 vehicles of all types from vintage cars to hot rods, street machines and trikes. The Moonta Oval with its fine grass area was an excellent place to park and the various facilities have increased over the years, all making it a pleasant day out for exhibitors and the many spectators. The regular tram runs to and from the town have proved to be very popular, enabling the local markets and shops to be included in the day out.

The MAPS are was well set out with four gazebos, all lined up with the club’s banners and flags. Thanks are due to the Bastian and Hopkins team for getting this organised., Richard Bastian having driven to Maitland the Saturday afternoon to collect the gear. Sunday morning saw a hitch for Richard as the Buick decided to cough and splutter on the way to the show. The RAA arrived and the carb float was found to be stuck, thus flooding the carbie. That sorted and a set on new plugs fitted saw the Buick arrive in time for judging.

Personally we had entered the Triumph TR4A and I’ll admit to putting a fair bit of effort into making the car look nice. Murphy’s Crash had done great job on making the wheel arches look better than new and I’d fitted new carpets, not the easiest of jobs. However, cleaning the chrome wire wheels was pretty tedious, as I took each one into the house after washing them well and was able to use a small tooth brush and cotton buds to make the look like new.

Having included Maisie the dog in the trip, I was careful to avoid the inevitable stray hairs, managing to get the car looking its best before the judges did their rounds. All that warranted a bacon and egg roll from the local Scouts catering team.

Some 22 MAPS vehicles made up the Club’s display and a bonus was seeing so many people sitting around socializing and perhaps getting to know about others members and their cars. It was also an opportunity to meet some prospective members and catch up with a couple who had not been able to get to the meetings of late.

Several other clubs had formidable club displays and I know couple of MAPS members were soon over at the Jaguar Drivers’ Club area! Whilst MAPS might centre on the older historic cars, the array of later and modified vehicles was an excellent opportunity to broaden tastes in creations on two, three, four or even more wheels. There were so amazing examples of hot rods and street machines and the work which goes into them is huge.

As regards the judging awards, MAPS received the Best Club Trophy; the Chapman Aston Martin DB2/4 , possibly the highest value car there, the Best Imported Trophy and Runner Up in the Best 4 Cylinder group was somewhat surprisingly given to the writer’s Triumph TR4A So we went home, hot, tired but happy after a most enjoyable day out. If you missed Moonta S & S 2018, make sure you make it a date for 2019 to join in an event of which Moonta Progress Association can be proud..

Just realized– we made the double for the weekend’s events, so two cars to clean!

From Carol Wilkin 0 to 60 + Ep 7 For those of you who have been playing along, the year is now 1985. Doug and I had two little kids, a dog, some cats and an old cottage to renovate, and were in the doldrums as far as keeping up with the ‘Cardashians’! I was driving Annabelle around with baby seats in the back. Doug was driving his old Landcruiser. We were still in the Mustang Club without a Mustang. It was grim. Then Doug found a 1963 Compact Fairlane for sale. It was a bit rough but the 260 V8 went well. He paid $600 much to my consternation. It was powder blue with a white roof peppered with surface rust. The bench seats were tattered brocade but it was roomy and seemed to drive well. At about the same time our friends, Steve and Bron bought an XY Falcon GT, red with gold stripes.... I think he paid about $3000 for it and it was in mint condition. Seems funny to look back on those days now, but we used to do a lot of things together, us in our old Fairlane and them in their lovely red GT. We went camping, we went to AIR to see the touring cars and the drags and we went on a few club runs as Steve joined the Falcon GT club. I can’t even imagine what his GT would be worth today! I was still driving Annabelle, which I loved, but Doug’s dad took pity on me, I can’t imagine why, and bought me a Compact Fairlane of my own, 1964 with a 302 V8. It was awesome, also blue with white roof but a gorgeous mid blue. I loved it. Immediately I started getting ideas about ‘doing’ it up but the way I wanted to do it was going to be a full on resto, so my plans were shelved for a while. However, thinking ahead, we bought enough blue paint to repaint not only my ‘64 but Doug’s ‘63 in the same blue. With the help of Doug’s brother Mel who was a motor

mechanic we stripped Doug’s car, fixed up a b i t o f rus t and repa in ted i t . Meanwhile, Doug’s dad found a white ‘64 Compact and bought it. We now had not a Wilkin Mustang corral at the All Ford Day, but a Wilkin Compact Fairlane Club display. Mel still had the black Mustang convertible and dad, Keith had also bought a 1948 Chev, so we had quite a family display at the All A m e r i c a n D a y t o o . Well that car bug had us firmly in its pincers again and Doug found a very nice S series Valiant, former owner Clem Smith. He bought it, which meant we now had 4 cars and a boat. It was a bit of a squeeze on our tiny block at Exeter but things were about to get worse. Doug saw a 1960 Thunderbird Sunroof model at Special Interest Autos. A squarebird Sunroof is pretty uncommon with only 600 made. It was a total, non-running rebuild job and we had no room, but he bought it anyway. Of course something had to go and it was the Valiant which sadly only had a s h o r t t i m e i n o u r f a m i l y . Since I was driving my Fairlane every day, it could not be stripped and taken off the road, so I decided to start with the interior. We stripped it out, rubbed it down and painted it in a very short time. One job done! Mel painting Doug’s ’63 ,Compact

One day I took the two children to the Adelaide Zoo with my friend Bron and her two kids. She took her Datsun and we parked next to each other. After about four hours we went to find the cars and mine was missing. Gone! Stolen! In total shock, (nothing like this had ever happened to me before) we all piled in the Datsun and went straight to the Cop Shop in Angus Street. I’m not sure the young lad behind the counter could quite grasp the severity, the gravity, the cataclysmic fallout of this theft. Hysterically, tears streaming and voice screaming, I tried my best to get this through to him. I wasn’t listening and neither was he. In the end, I was escorted into an interview room and left alone to ‘calm down’. Finally I was able to provide some basic details and was persuaded to go with Bron, that is to get out of the Police Station. The story ended both well and badly. I got the car back in one piece, no damage but all the children’s stuff was found dumped in the Torrens, car seats, toys, blankets, etc. Secondly, the police found the car only a couple of miles from the zoo where it had run out of petrol. Luckily, I always ran it on the smell of an oily rag and it never had much fuel to spare! Thirdly, it probably wouldn’t have been stolen by the joy riders if I hadn’t left the keys in the boot. Not sure how the police knew that, can only assume they knew who had pinched it! Doug had always loved Coobowie, having holidayed there many times and we had all camped there with friends. I thought it was nice. However, increasingly, Doug was warming to the idea of actually moving there so I half-heartedly put my name down in Jan 1990 for a transfer through the Education Dept. It took one week and I had a job at

Minlaton Primary School starting in Feb 1990. Suddenly we had to work out what to do. We bought a 23ft Franklin caravan with a tiny bathroom and parked it on the block. We put our house on the market. I moved to Coobowie with Mark who was six and started school at Minlaton. I would drive my Compact to Minlaton and park it outside the school and the kids would ask me if they could go for a ride in it! They were so impressed that Mark got to travel in it every day. Wendy stayed in Adelaide with Doug while he packed up the house and they joined me in April., Pictured below- Bringing home the ’60 T-Bird behind Doug’s mum’s Coupe

In 1989 I bought an XD Falcon wagon to drive to work while my Fairlane came off the road and we began the rebuild after Christmas. Everything was done at brother Mel’s place in Woodville as we didn’t have the space. As with the Annabelle restoration in ‘75, I wanted to be involved in every bit but this time I wanted to do some painting. So I did, although Mel put on the final coats, I did much of the undercoat and first colour. The rear was tubbed to take huge rims and tyres. Chromies with big Yokohama rubber shod this awesome machine. I bought a set of Falcon Fairmont bucket seats and console, had the interior reupholstered in two tone blue velour. To top off the nicely warm engine, I put on a twin exhaust with a growl. I loved this car!

Me painting my ’64 Compact At the time I had returned to work as Lab Assistant at Christie’s Beach High School. I drove the Compact from Exeter to Christie’s every day along the coast and then the Lonsdale Highway. In those days it was a pretty clear run and there were no traffic lights from the top of Brighton Road through to Beach Road Christie’s Beach. I used to treat the trip to work as a time trial, seeing how many seconds or even minutes I could shave off the time each day. The Compact held the track beautifully and had loads of power. I will never forget the adrenalin rush on those

sweeping curves at 100 mph with the roar of the exhausts reverberating off the concrete barriers. It was early in the morning, not much traffic and I never got pinged once in the 12 months I was there. Those were the days Unfortunately that tenure came to an end and I found myself with a twelve month contract at Modbury High School. I drove my Compact up every day, the trip nowhere near as exhilarating as the Christie’s drive. One day, just as I took off across the Gepps Cross intersection, one of the big rear tyres blew. (I have no idea why!) I rolled to the other side and stopped just by Atlas Homes which used to be there. So in a skirt and stockings, I got the jack out and the spare which was woefully tiny compared to the blown tyre, and after chocking the front and loosening the wheel nuts, I began jacking the rear. The jack would not go high enough to get the wheel out from under the wheel arch. So, going into Atlas Homes yard, I found some besser blocks which I placed under the axle and let the car down onto them. Then another besser block to put the jack on and I managed to get it high enough to get the wheel out. Let me say that not one commuter stopped to ask if I needed help (which I didn’t by the way) but there were plenty of whistles and other comments. Having put the spare on, removed and returned the besser blocks and re tightened the wheel nuts, I headed off to school, not thinking to take a look at myself. When I walked in very late with ripped stockings, dirt all over my dress, hands, legs, shoes and in my hair, the charming principal of the day told me to tidy myself up. Gee if he only knew what lengths I had gone to get that way!!!!!

I wonder if they are still for sale… An interesting look at some vehicles for sale in the UK, back in the early 1950’s. These come from a pile of cuttings from “The Autocar”, 1951 –53 A tidy little 1939 Austin Eight which sold new 14 years earlier at 135PDS.on offer for 395PDS

On the same page, a 1931 4.5 Litre Bentley which cost 1721 PDS new could bought from Performance Cars, Brentford for just 495PDS. Fuel consumption at 7 to 10 mpg might take the edge off the keen price!

A 1933 Alvis Speed 20 Four seater tourer would have cost new 825 PDS

when new, but you could buy this classy 90mph vehicle for just 385PDS However, not every car was cheap as new car supplies were limited, so a 1939 Ford Eight Saloon would cost you 395PDS, several times its 115 PDS pre war price An MG TD, just two years old would be yours for 1195PDS, twice its new price Other Bentleys for sale included a 1934 Derby Bentley 3.5 litre just 695PD Saloon, half the original figure. A 1948 Mark 6 Bentley was twice its new price at 5335PDS

Trusting that your neighbours were not harbouring any anti German feeling, a 1938 Mercedes Benz 540K drophead coupe could be had for just 1675PDS, just 200 PDS less than the new price.. I doubt you’d be welcome in the industrial areas of cities such as Coventry’s Holyhead Road where the Alvis factory had been destroyed in the 1940 bombing.. MO

YORKETOWN RUN, SUNDAY 18TH MARCH On Sunday 18th March 10 MAPS cars and 2 Motor Bikes headed south to Yorketown to join the YPV &VMC members for a fun rally around the SYP. After a much welcomed morning cuppa and the most delicious home baked biscuits (one of our members said it was worth the trip to Yorketown just for the biscuits) John Giles sent us on our way. Various cars Fords, Holdens, Jags, Mercedes, VWs, Mazdas, MGs and (I’m bound to have missed some) along with a favourite of mine the Edithburgh Fire Truck, two other

trucks and 6 motor cycles including 2 side-cars headed to Point Turton via Warooka. A short break and we were on the road again snaking our way to Minlaton via Hardwicke Bay. The spectacle of our cavalcade earned us quite a few waves along the way. An enjoyable lunch at the Minlaton Hotel and once again we were rounded up and sent on our way to Curramulka where we lost a couple of cars at the Curry pub but most kept going to Stansbury via Pt. Vincent. Motor Bike riding must be thirsty

work as our “Bikies” stopped at the Coffee Shop for refreshments. We arrived at the Stansbury Museum mid-afternoon. What a wonderful diverse display and much larger than I thought it would be, well worth the $3-00 entry fee. A special thanks to Ted Buttfield, pictured above, Carol Roberts and their band of volunteers who were only too happy to answer any questions we had. Congratulations to the Farrows, celebrating their 18th Wedding Anniversary. Once again a most enjoyable day. Gerry Mahlo
