Students will practice their sportsmanship skillsduring a coin flip game.

IVIateria1s Needed3 "Don't FIip Out!" scoring sheetO l\vo crayons for each group

G One quarter for each group

Teacher Instructions1. Explain to students that when someone "flips out," he or she

loses his or her temper. This can happen when people losegames. The students'goal is to NOT flip out and keep apositive attitude during this game.

2. Split students into groups of two (for an odd number, makeone student your partner).

3. Pass out the "Don't FIip Out!'scoring sheets to each student.

4. Explain that this game will be played twice. Each student will be the"heads" side one game and the "tails" side the other game.

5. The students take turns flipping the quarber. Whichever side the quarterlands on, the students on that side get a point and colors in one of thequarters on his or her sheet.

6. The flrst one to 10 wins. Be certain to monitor the activity and praise studentsexhibiting good sportsmanship.

7 . After a student wins, play the game again with the student switching coin sides.

This is a great activity to not only practice sportsmanship,but to blend with a math lesson for money counting orprobability exercises.
