What a journey we have started in the world of beauty! When we released the first
issue of our magazine last spring we never dreamed that so many readers would
e-mail, call and write us. What a response!
Of course for this issue we have also engaged the best make up artists, stylists, hair
dressers and photographers who have worked together to give our readers beauti-
ful pictures to look at, learn from and be inspired by. We also have several exciting
interviews with interesting Swedish and international personalities.
Starting with this issue we are taking the step from being a magazine in Swedish
to one in English. By doing so we hope to reach readers interested in make up in
areas far beyond Scandinavia.
In the fall Make Up Store will be presenting 3 new looks. First out is “Joulie Rouge”,
inspired by female pirates. Oh yes, there were such! With look no. 2 we enter a
delicatessan to wander in the world of chocolate. Brown in light and dark shades
and irresistible scents. Then it’s time for expert advice from an authority..
Welcome to a world of colors!

Amelia Adamo Sweden’s queen of magazines – her make up bag is getting heavier and heavier. – I’ve become terribly vain and it gets worse as the years go by, says Amelia Adamo.
M | 13
Name: Amelia Adamo Age: 58 Lives: Stock-holm Family: Husband Thorbjörn Larsson and four children (two of her own and two bonus kids) as well as grandson Sixten. Pro-fession: CEO for Amelia publishers. Career: Amelia Adamo has helped increase sales for among others the magazine Vecko Revyn and the Sunday supplement to Aftonbladet. She started Amelia in 1995 and Tara in 2001. Amelia has won numerous awards, among others CEO of the year in 1997, Best Female Financial Executive in 1997 and the great journalist award in 2003. Best make up on a Swedish celebrity: Linda Skugge
Amelia is good at granting herself spiritual goodies, such as food, work-out, beautiful clothes. She recently asked Swedish star
designer Lars Wallin to design an outfit for her.
– Clothes have never been of great interest to me, I’m not a shopping generation person or a shopoholic, but I’m getting better.
Nice clothes that emphasize my personality are never wrong, but I’m not always good at finding them.
Amelia Adamo came to Sweden from Italy as a nine-month old toddler. Her mother was not well off, but all her efforts were
aimed at benefiting her only daughter. That’s where Amelia got the self-esteem that allowed her to dare to turn weak magazines
upside down and shoot them to success. Like Vecko Revyn. The Sunday supplement to Aftonbladet. Ten years ago she started the
magazine that is named after her and a number of years later Tara – not many people believed in this magazine.
– We focused on a group that was considered to be unprofitable, that is women at the age of 50 plus. I’m proud of that in my
career, the fact that I dared. Amelia’s magazines aim at inspiring changes, they are like sparkplugs for women in Sweden to get
them to think that little extra. Beauty and make up are an important part of this.
– Our “tried and tested” column is highly appreciated and if readers think we have made bad choices, our beauty editor Linnea
Öst finds out about it immediately. One of the most popular topics is make-overs, hair, face or body make-overs.
While at home in her apartment or out in her cottage garden, Amelia settles for lipstick and facial cream, but for work she makes
an effort.
– I almost always use eyeshadow, mascara, rouge and foundation cream if I look pale. In the evenings I use the same, but more,
plus eyeliner. Having access to a large make up cabinet at work is both wonderful and difficult.
– Yes, I can get stressed out by breast creams and three layers of anti-cellulite creams.
Is beauty important or not?
– Most women want to look appealing. You don’t want to overdo it; I would say that I prefer a discrete look rather than a Latin
signal look. Women under 25 and those over 45 are most interested in make up. Before you turn 25 you are looking for your own
look, your identity and how to emphasize it in the best possible way. After 45 you have to learn again. Facial changes require new
ways to do your make up, a much heavier make up bag and much more time, but more often than not, good results!
What is your opinion on the future for guy make up?
– It will become more popular when men find out what a good foundation and black eyelashes can do for a man...
How do you feel about Make Up Store?
– Make Up Store and its founder, Mika Liias, have broadened the business to more than just cosmetics. Such entrepreneurs
should be applauded and admired. Sweden needs more of them. Establishing himself abroad in such a mature market is truly
an achievement!
She is lovely. Colorful. Has charisma that could thin out the ozone layer.
Sweden seems a bit happier thanks to the queen of glossy magazines, Ame-
lia Adamo. Even though she spends all hours with her trademark and new
ideas, she still has time to take care of herself and the face that has become
so well-known on Amelia magazine’s editorial page.
– To me beauty is seeing a happy and not too tired Amelia in the mir-
ror. Or looking good at a party or when someone pays me a compliment
and says that I don’t look 58. If you want to speak of beauty in a broader
sense, a beautiful person is someone who enjoys life, emanates joy of liv-
ing, energy and warmth. You don’t often see a person who is frighteningly
ugly, but you can very often see awfully sour faces. A smile, a twinkle in
someone’s eye, hair smelling of shampoo, a fragrant body. Beauty is so
much more and it has nothing to do with classic looks.

Mika Liias Inspiration. That’s one of the most important words to the founder of Make Up Store. – Staff that is inspired inspires our customers, says Mika Liias.
M | 35
Name: Mika Liias Age: 36 Lives: Stockholm Family: Single Profession: Make Up Store’s founder and CEO. Dream profession as a child: Interior decorator. Gets his ideas: “When I’m travelling. Anything I see can give me ideas and I memorize everything. I’m very grate-ful for my photographic memory.” Make Up Store’s best products - Mika Liias’ own prize podium: Cover all mix. Lipsticks. “They have been slightly neglected because of lipgloss. Our lipsticks are mild and protective, since they contain avocado oil.” Make Up Store’s mascara.
Mika Liias will never forget the girl who dreamed of starting her own make-up store. She had vis-
ited all the Make Up Store boutiques in Scandinavia, something I still haven’t done, says founder,
CEO laughingly. He’s getting there, though. Make Up Store has 75 boutiques world-wide and rib-
bons are constantly being cut to sites of make-up successes in new places. Singapore and Australia
are next up for the opportunity to purchase Swedish make-up products, after which boutiques
will be opened in a new location every week until the end of November.
– I believe that besides its products, Make Up Store’s success depends on warmth and a family
atmosphere among our staff. Everyone, from the very top, to our warehouse personnel, is com-
mitted to their job and it shows. It feels great to be part of such a team! Here in Sweden we often
forget how good we are at quality, honesty and our organization skills. We should give ourselves
more credit. Mika Liias is one of Sweden’s most successful businessmen, perhaps because he lives
and breathes his Make Up Store, he is Make Up Store. Maybe because he is fully aware of every
single phase in the production chain, because he never forgets about his co-workers. On this
particular day he is a bit drowsy and jet-lagged after a 10-day trip to Thailand, where chosen Make
Up Store staff members enjoyed visits to spas, elephant rides and exquisite dinners on the beach.
– This is our way of showing our
appreciation. I love meetings with
co-workers whom I do not meet
very often, it gives me the oppor-
tunity to talk to them, to inspire
them. Now there’s the word that
is very important to Mika Liias. He
is an inspiration to others through
his tempo, his scrutiny and his
commitment. Staff members are
encouraged at lectures given by
well-known make-up artists. He
knows how important that is,
since he started his career at the
cash register.
– I know that day to day work can be dreary, but inspired personnel will inspire others. Customers
receive unique tips from our personnel, all of whom are estheticians. We see that our customers are
thrilled afterwards, like the one time a lady bought 10 mascaras because “they’re fantastic” or when a
mother and daughter came in and both of them left the store with piles of tips for both generations.
– The praise we get from our customers feels great, makes us feel that we have succeeded. But
we’re never completely finished working on our concept, we never lay back. You’re only as good
as your latest make-up. Perhaps Mika Liias’ fighting spirit is what constantly pushes his company
towards the top. He learned to face adversities in school when his occupational counselor dispar-
aged his professional dreams as “a girl’s job”. Well now he has shown her and the rest of the
world. He’s picked up a lot of good things that form his style of leadership.
– I‘ve had some really bad bosses in my life and I wouldn’t want anyone to have to experience
that. I hate hierarchy. Everyone is valuable and it’s important to feel needed. I don’t like yes-sayers
around me either, it’s important to get some opposition otherwise we’ll be sitting here ten years
from now doing the same things as today.
Make Up Store is winning numerous awards all over the world. They have plaques from the
Swedish magazine Amelia, the Swedish Cosmopolitan and the Mexican Elle.
Where will Make Up Store be in ten years?
– We’ll have stores in even more countries. I’ve had offers to sell Make Up Store but I’ve turned
them down. That would be like selling my soul. That’s the fun part about my job, I can create
something new every day, I don’t leave anything untouched.

Owe Sandström ABBA. Zarah Leander. Björn Skifs. Owe Sandström has designed clothes for the greatest and is a world star himself, according to his fans. He himself is humble in life. – My driving force is to spread joy and knowledge, he says.
M | 47
Name: Owe Sandström Age: 61 Lives: Stock-holm Family: Currently single. Profession: Designs clothes and is teacher at Spånga high school and administrator for the ani-mal care center there. Designer career: Has designed costumes for Cullberg ballet ensemble and for Riksteatern, Berns, Wall-mans Salonger and artists such as ABBA, Björn Skifs, Annalisa Ericson and Zarah Leander. Currently also designs mascots, director and designer at Stockholm Horse Show, as well as organizing various events. This summer Owe has worked on the cos-tumes for Lasse Berghagen’s summer tour. Best make up on a Swedish celebrity: “Lena Philipsson and Alcazar. Lena is gorgeous and Alcazar stands for something totally new in the world of make up. I like that.” Owe’s favorite products from Make Up Store: Hydrating Body Gel, Sensitive Cleanser.
Masks from Bali. Coasters from Singapore. Murals from Rotterdam. Each of them has its own history. Owe Sandström has one of his own. He is full-time
teacher at Spånga high school and administrator for the animal care center there. He is also director and show designer for Stockholm International Horse
Show, mascot designer, florist, organizer of events – and clothes designer for some of Sweden’s greatest artists. Let’s rewind to 1949, when Owe was a
toddler at home in Sundsvall. Little Sandström paraded around in ponchos of his own design, cut in crepe paper and he wanted to be a priest “because
they wore such fine clothes”. This interest became serious when Owe met his fiancée Kerstin and moved to Uppsala. Both of them were dancers – Owe’s
specialty was the flamenco – and after he graduated, one amateur designer job led to the next, his first being for the Phåntratt ballet in Uppsala.
– I had never designed clothes before, but I thought “If other people can do it, so can I!”. This cheeky motto has accompanied Owe Sandström during
his whole career, especially when designer challenges started to pour in from higher places. Such as the Cullberg ballet, for which Owe would be making
costumes for 15 years. Or the Song Festival, where Mr. Sandström made his debut with a pair of crazy outfits for the group Malta – who won in 1973. Or
from Berns, where he worked with celebrities such as Björn Skifs and Eva Rydberg. One night a gentleman came back stage and sighed resignedly. “My
wife is sitting out there demanding to meet you”, said the husband to Owe.
– When I went out I saw Zarah Leander sitting there and she said “It’s time you and I got to know each other better”. The Primadonna’s first sentence
became the truth and it was the start of a laughing, tear-filled and festive seven-year long friendship.
– I’m probably most proud of my silver white creation for Zarah’s last LP-jacket, where she is wearing a boa and a gown embroidered with gems. It
has been copied in many places. Then when a girl named Annefrid and her group Festfolket walked in through the door, Owe Sandström’s life changed
forever. ABBA’s outfits were innovative, vulgar and beautiful. Whenever anyone said “Why?” Owe Sandström would say “Why not?”.
– Björn and Benny wanted to think as a team, even though I had the freedom of creating the basic idea for the outfits. Benny would always say “Just
think of creating an outfit that I can play in” while Björn wanted to show off his well-trained body in tight shirts. As designer by appointment to one of
the most significant pop groups in the world, a hysteria started that goes on even today. The BBC flew a whole tv team over to make a documentary about
ABBA’s designer. Fans chase him all the way to the teacher’s room at Spånga high school or queue for hours to see his work.
– Of course it’s fantastic. I often think of a saying from up north where I come from that means more or less: “Don’t let things go too far.” I don’t
ever want to. You should be humble in life. During the long ABBA-journey Owe met one of his best friends. In Thailand, amidst the fragrance of grilled
chicken drumsticks and a waterfall of beautiful fabrics Owe Sandström was there when Make Up Store’s founder Mika Liias fell for the wonderful world
of cosmetics.
– He was overjoyed when he found a pair of false eye lashes with sequins on them. I have been privileged to watch Mika and Make Up Store and I con-
sider him to be an extremely considerate leader with a unique personnel policy. He is very good at coming up with concepts, such as involving artists
and designers. It’s amazing that the whole world can now buy Swedish cosmetics.
What is beauty to you? Owe is silent. He takes his time to think.
– Youthful beauty, but also age. I can see beauty in an elderly fisherman in Indonesia. A twisted tree root. A drop of morning dew. The hand of a child
on an old woman’s. I love products created naturally. We only keep what we love. We only love what we understand. We only understand what we have
learned. Now there’s a useful lesson in life from Sandström.
We only keep what we love. We only love
what we understand. We only understand
what we have learned. That’s Owe Sand-
ström’s mantra. He has taken it from the
Brittish anthropologist Jane Goodall and
he tries to live according to it every day.
– I want to share my knowledge. I might
start my own designer school in the fu-
ture, we’ll have to wait and see. I want
to give others the chance I once got.
Wait! Look at the picture to the left. Who
do you see? The man who hosted the Sunday
Open program “How do animals do it” 150
times? The world renowned designer who
created the ABBA image? Or perhaps the
flamenco dancer from Uppsala? Owe Sand-
ström is a man of many talents. His golden
brown skin matches the brick walls of his
three story apartment from the end of the
former century. Every room is full of souve-
nirs from journeys to all parts of the world.

International Make Up CenterMake Up Store’s founder, Mika Liias, started the school in 1990. “Sweden was an under-developed country for make up artists at the time. We were first.” Schools can now be found in Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Finland and Estonia. The International Make Up Center offers 10-week long courses to future make up-artists. They cover all the basics, color and light class-es, day and evening make up, as well as make up for advertisements. The 20-week long course also has classes in character make up, for example theatre, movie and make-over make up.
Marilyn Monroe’s low voice flows from the loudspeakers, interrupted from time to
time by laughter or someone saying “You look gorgeous!”. It’s a morning course
at Make Up Store’s own International Make Up Center in Stockholm, and the 14
pupils are fully concentrated on their work in front of the mirrors framed with
fluorescent lighting. Powder brushes whip over faces and the innumerable jars
of cosmetics are all but used up after five weeks. These pupils, who are half-way
through their training, are about to become certified make up artists at one of
Europe’s leading make up schools. All thanks to the enthusiasts at Make Up Store.
Founder Mika Liias started his project in 1990, brought in Olle Johansson as head
teacher a year later – and since then the International Make Up Center has trained
such make up artist stars as Magdalena Erixon, Fredrik Stambro, Teresa Grundin
and many more. This year is the school’s 15th anniversary and the fall courses were
fully booked already four months before they started. The extensive schedule con-
tains such classes as make up from the ‘20s to the ‘90s, skin care, color and light,
wedding make up, drag queen make up.
– Our pupils get to bring guys to class for the drag queen make up, with wigs
and everything. This always means a lot of laughter, says former principal Marina
Sjöberg. Our pupils also get a case full of cosmetics worth 15 000 kronor.
– It’s like Christmas when our pupils get the case during roll call on their first
day at school. Then they have to carry that heavy case to school every day but it’s
a good way of learning what a make up artist’s life is really like.
What makes the International Make Up Center so unique?
– Stockholm is full of make up schools, but ours was first. The school has devel-
oped enormously since it was the first one in Sweden, and our pupils all get jobs
afterwards, says Marina Sjöberg. Head teacher Olle Johansson agrees.
– And we will keep on getting better. I have been teaching since 1987 and I know
how to convey my knowledge as a pedagogue. There are many good make up art-
ists but how many of them can actually teach? To Olle entirety is important. If he is
teaching a class in ‘20s make up, then he will have Louis Armstrong on the stereo.
If it’s an 80’s class, Madonna and Michael Jackson will be rocking away.
– It’s important because a lot of our young people have no history. Music gives
make up a context. And it shows that Olle is something of a guru to his pupils. He
dabs a little here, commends someone there. The walls are covered with thank you
notes from former pupils.
– Olle’s hands are magical. What might take several hours for us, he does within
a matter of minutes, says Tina Jery, while painting her colleague Anna-Karin Lilje-
dahl’s lips a shiny raspberry red. Anna-Karin agrees.
– Yes, the teachers here are great. Olle is really fun. Anna-Karin Liljedahl came all
the way to Stockholm from Ronneby for the ten-week course at The International
Make Up Center, which brings her one step closer to her dream of becoming a
make up artist. She checked out several schools on the Internet and chose Make
Up Store’s school because it seemed to be the most reliable one.
– Now I know that is correct. I couldn’t have chosen a better school. The teach-
ers are good, we leave the school as professionals and the school helps us find jobs.
– I am looking forward to the classes that will teach us how to do make up for
fashion shows. Anna-Sara Källström is sitting next to her and she is being taken care
of by Lili Aghaei, who already has her make up done. They find it hard to choose
when we ask them what was most fun at the school.
– That’s difficult, we do so many fun things every day. Everything is new to us,
but I think that the decade make ups were interesting. We learn not only about the
make up for the period, but also a little history about it, says Anna-Sara.
She won the chance to go to the school in a competition held by the magazine
Hennes (Hers), thereby studying to become what she is most interested in becom-
ing. Both she and Lili want to be freelancers as make up artists – but the more they
learn, the more they realize what a difficult profession it is.
– During the first few days at school I refused to do my own make up. I real-
ized how little I knew and I thought, “My goodness, what have I been doing up
to now?”. Now I know that make up is more than getting your eyeliner straight. I
love doing make up on others. In a few weeks she and her colleagues will become
certified make up artists. Her evaluation of the school will be one more in the pile
of praises such as “This has been the best time of my life!” .
– I feel much more secure now. I know this is the kind of work I want to do, says
Lili Aghaei, with her thick eyeliner and red ‘50s lips. I’m sure even Marilyn Monroe
would have been satisfied at The International make up center.

Perhaps a profession for you?International Make Up Center is currently the leading make up school in Scandinavia and is celebrating its 15th anniversary. You can attend in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Finland and Estonia, quite soon in Norway as well. All our schools are located in central areas of these cities. Our aim is to give our students as broad a make up training as possible and the curriculum is based on the demands from the employment market in Sweden and abroad. It is continuously updated with what’s new in technology, trends and products and students are given the opportunity to practice while at school.
Working as a make up artist provides several opportunities: you can work in fashion, photo, film, theatre or cosmetics sales. At our school you will meet teachers who are professionals with years of experience, ready to give you a solid base to stand on. You will also obtain a broad variety of make up products that are included in the fee.
International Make Up Center has a network of former students and the school has become a natural meeting place over the years, a place to which they can always return to find advice and tips for their work. This ensures a feeling of security in a profession where you often work independently. Several of our students have successful careers both in Sweden and abroad and many have been mentioned, nominated and awarded in competitions.

Clarence Lee He is Singapore’s most famous make up artist. – Make Up Store’s products are every make up artist’s dream, he says.
M | 79
He has won prestigious fashion awards. Tours all over the world as personal make
up artist to world stars. Clarence Lee is a busy man, to say the least. He spends
endless hours on flights all over the world, make up products in his carry on bag,
always ready for a job.
– That’s probably the only disadvantage of my job, the crazy hours I work, says
Clarence Lee when Make Up Store magazine gets a hold of him between trips.
– I love what I do and I’m grateful that I can have my hobby as my profession
and support myself. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet great stars and help them
with their make up and I also love to travel. My job has taken me to many fantastic
places all over the world. But Clarence Lee never dreamed of becoming a make up
artist full time. Interpreter. Steward. Artist. That’s what he wanted to be!
– However, to become an interpreter I would have had to study languages for many
years, so that didn’t work out. I’ve been fascinated by make up since I was little. I
could watch women for hours to study their make up and – in my mind – think of how
I could make them look even more beautiful. Clarence practiced on his classmates
during school performances. And then he got his chance. Clarence went to a casting
with a model friend and the stylist there decided to give young Clarence Lee a chance.
– I got my chance at being a make up artist before I graduated from high school
and after that it was a natural step to continue in the business. I’m still very inter-
ested in foreign languages, though.
What makes you Singapore’s best make up artist?
– Well, I’d like to say that I am one of the best make up artists in Singapore. I don’t
think anyone is “best” but I do know I’m a lot of people’s favorite. But to answer
your question, I think it’s because I’ve been in the business for so many years. I’ve
worked with many famous people and I’ve won numerous awards.
What is beauty to you?
– Beauty is very individual. I believe every person has a unique beauty.
Tell us about some of the highlights in your career.
– It was fantastic to win the “make up artist of the year” award in 2001, since it
was the first Singapore Fashion Awards. I also remember being at the film festival in
Cannes – this year was my third time with the famous Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang,
whose make up I did. I have also been to Los Angeles with her and that was amazing.
For Clarence Lee there is no such thing as a normal day at work. Sometimes he
does make up for a wedding, sometimes at a fashion shoot.
– I look in the model’s portfolio to see what style suits her best. Both when I’m
working with models and brides to be I want these women to feel that they are the
most beautiful woman in the world on that day.
What do you think about Make Up Store?
– Frankly speaking, their packages don’t exactly give you that wow-feeling at first
sight, but that becomes secondary once you understand what a broad variety of
products they have.
What do you think of the new trend in men’s make up?
– I definitely think men can wear make up, just as long as they don’t overdo it.
Men can use some help with their appearance, just as women do. Why not allow
yourself a bit of a tan if you’re pale, or fix your eyebrows if they are a shade too light?
What is the hottest item on the Singapore make up scene just now?
– Lipgloss always works. It’s easy to carry everywhere and you don’t need to know
very much about it before you start using it.
Do you see yourself working as a make up artist all your life?
– Yes, definitely, or at least as long as I can. As long as there is a demand for my
work and my hands and eyes don’t let me down. I love what I do and I don’t get
tired of it, even when I’m working every day. I think it’s amazing to see a woman
change - and her happy face when she sees the results of my work.
Name: Clarence Lee Age: 32 Lives: Singa-pore Profession: Singapore’s most famous make up artist. Best make up on a celebrity: “I like the way Julian Moore accentuates her porcelain-like skin using careful make up, but Monica Bellucci, Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd are also good. And then of course actress Ziyi Zhang, because I’m the one who does her make up, haha.” Clarence Lee’s three favorite products from Make Up Store: Star Lips. “I love their shimmer and how they make lips look larger”, Wonder Powder (Kalahari). “The little shimmer pig-ment makes skin glow naturally,” Skin Se-rum. “It makes the skin wonderfully soft and thins out foundation for a fantastic finish.”

Anna Göransson Anna never cheats with the base for her make up. – Skin care is the base for everything, says Make Up Store’s own make up artist and skin care expert.
M | 97
Name: Anna Göransson Age: 25 Lives: Stockholm Family: Mother, father and brother in Jönköping. I live with my boyfriend Kifah and my beloved dog Tiger. Profession: Make up-artist and skin care expert. Career: Started doing make up at 16 and soon got a job through a photography agency in her hometown of Jönköping. Moved to Stockholm at 19 and has among others taken the make up training at Scenum. Make up-artist and skin care expert at Make Up Store for the past five years. Does freelance work as beauty editor and styl-ist. Anna’s three favorite products from Make Up Store: Wonder powder, a fantastic mineral pow-der with real mother of pearl. Moisture mask, a moisturizing mask that I can’t live without. Skin serum. Addictive. Leaves your skin feeling like silk.
– One of the most important tips is to go slow. If you have no experience in skin care you
should not bother with complicated things that you will never use. Start with basic skin
care, cleansing, skin tonic and a moisturizer, and develop on that later. As skin care expert
for Make Up Store she wants to emphasize its abundance of skin care products.
– A lot of people think of Make Up Store as only cosmetics, but we are very proud of our
skin care department, which has become an amazing complement to our make up. It feels
good knowing that Make Up Store offers high quality skin care products of a different kind
with great variety. Apart from the basic products we also have a number of fun things. An-
na’s favorite in the Make Up Store cosmetic bag is their Skin serum, a good base for make
up to stay on all day, or their Exfoliating cleansing powder, a powder peeling that can be
mixed as required.
– Once you start using them, you can’t do without them, says Anna jokingly.
How do you take care of your own skin?
– I’m very fussy. It can be hard sometimes in the evening when I just want to get to bed,
but I never cheat in my skin care and I would never skip sun protection. The sun is really
hard on your skin.
Why is make up so important and so much fun?
– It’s become a part of our wardrobe. Just like clothes, make up helps you express your
feelings and who you are. Make up and skin care products also function to conceal or ex-
pose – and they are our everyday luxury. Everybody wants to look good, even on a weekday.
Anna Göransson’s career in the business has sky-rocketed, and she’s worked hard.
– My family and my friends are proud of me. Of course from time to time I bump into old
acquaintances who do not consider this to be a real job but they have a right to their own
opinion. I am so glad that I can work at what is my greatest interest. She has been with
Make Up Store for five years and she loves it there.
– Make Up Store is a creative company that has grown incredibly and I have grown with
it. I have a lot to be grateful to Make Up Store for. I love their concept and their products
and I feel great with the people I work with. I am anxious to spread my knowledge to our
customers. Some of our products are so special that they demand that the customers take
instructions home with them. I think that makes Make Up Store a first class company. And
she has a lot going for her, traveling all over the country to inspire and train boutique per-
sonnel, giving evening courses.
– Guys think it’s great fun. What makes evenings for guys so much fun is that they are very
open to suggestions, since everything is new and exciting. They are amazed at what a pair
of tweezers, or concealer and skin care can do.
What do you think the trend for guys will be in the future?
– I think things will happen very fast. Previously guys were embarrassed to go out and
buy products for themselves, that’s changed. We see more and more products especially for
men. What makes Make Up Store’s assortment so special is that our products and the way
they are packed are not only for women, as is often the case. They are for everyone.
For make up-artist Anna Göransson cosmetics are like
beautiful tapestries – and being a true craftswoman
she knows that the base is absolutely most important.
– Beauty starts and ends with careful skin care. If
your skin, the base for all cosmetics, is not taken care
of, then your make up will never be perfect. A lot
of people are not aware of how important that base
is, but that’s improving. Anna Göransson knows.
Even though she just blew out 25 candles on her
birthday cake she has been in the business for 10
years. She started to be interested in the amazing
things that could be done with an appearance us-
ing cosmetics and a good skin base at the age of
16. She practiced on her friends. Today she gives
courses both to personnel and to customers in
Make Up Store boutiques and willingly reveals her
insider tips.

(The picture previous published in the finnish magazine Gloria)
Vendela KirsebomThommesen She is blonde, beautiful
and blue eyed. With a sharp sense for business
and beauty. Meet Vendela, the super model that
has been on the top for 25 years.
M | 109
Name: Vendela Kirsebom Thommesen Age: 38 Lives: Oslo Family: Husband Olaf Thommesen, two daughters age five and seven. Profession: Super model. Career: Vendela was discovered already at the age of 13, by the legendary model mother Eileen Ford. At the age of 18 she moved to Italy to start modelling fulltime and shortly after that she signed a contract with Elisabeth Arden. Since then she has been working with brands like Diesel Jeans, Revlon and Victoria’s Secret. Vendela has also had her pictures taken for covers to well established magazines. Besides she was playing against Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger in the movie “Batman & Robin”. Vendelas favorite product from Make Up Store: “I love Make Up Store’s mascara! It is one of the best ones I have ever tried!”
– I have got some time off in our house in the south of Norway. We have an old fisherman’s house just by the sea. It
is so beautiful, Vendela is giggling, though she has only just woken up.
She is busy these days travelling around the world doing campaigns for Sonia Rykiel as well as Marks & Spenser. One
day in Germany next day in the States.
– I still find it very amusing standing in front of the camera. I love the model industry and it is a huge part of my life.
I have worked with this since I was a teenager though today I have a totally different career. After giving birth I do not
work with high fashion, as such, anymore but I am very happy with the clients that I work with today.
As if this was not enough, the other day Vendela also signed a contract with a Norwegian jewellery chain and will
be the front face for their diamonds.
What is it in your career that you are mostly proud of?
– That I have had the opportunity to work for this long and with so many different projects. I feel proud of that I
have lasted for this long in an industry this tough. I find it cool to be able to show that you can be a mother of two Kids
and still do beautiful pictures.
Tell us about your greatest modelling memory?
– Oh, I have so many but I especially remember my first cover. The shoot was for a Swedish Magazine “Vecko Revyn”
and when I saw the covers everywhere in town I found it surreal that it was really ME hanging there. Another memory
is from when I had pictures taken for “Sports Illustrated”. The Model Agency Ford did not believe that I was suitable
for sexy shoots, so when the swimwear magazine contacted me it felt like a victory. I wrote a letter about this to Eileen
Ford and they did actually put up the Magazine covers in the office afterwards.
When where you the best ever made up?
– Everyone says the times when Laura Mercier has made me up, I do not believe there is anyone that can do make up
the way she does. She has a background as an artist and the face really looks like a portrait when she has finished. She
has got the ability making you looking really beautiful. I worked a lot with her when doing shoots for Elisabeth Arden.
How do you look after you skin yourself?
– I am taking good care of my skin and I go for facials often. I usually go to a lady in Stockholm and every time I
have an appointment I book my next one. My skin is very sensitive so I am carefully choosing good products. But I do
not believe that beauty is that important, not as important as media persists. The most important thing is that you feel
happy within yourself. Of course beauty is fun but there must be a limit. TV-programs like ”The Swan” (am American
program where all the attendees must go through surgery) is not okay.
How do you make yourself up for private use?
– Rather little but the older I get the more I realise that I like to make the effort with some mascara, lipgloss and
concealer. What I find amusing with make-up is that you can make such a difference to your look even when only using
a very small amount, I especially like eyepencils with glitter and glittery body product and it is amazing how just an eye
pencil can make your eyes so intense. But obviously, since I got my kids I do not have much spare time for make-up.
What do your daughters say about mummy being in different magazines?
– I have brought them with me when I have done jobs since they where little babies. Of course they think it is fun
but sometimes they say “why do you look so funny” or “why do you have your hair like that”, when I come home after
doing a job. They think it is fun with make-up but they do not want to be models themselves.
What do you think about Make Up Store?
– It is a very good brand with amazingly good products. I think Make Up Store shall have a lot of credit for always
picking up the latest fashion trends. You always find what ever there is that you need in their stores. I would love to
have a similar business one day. Maybe it will be reality very soon. The Norwegian supermodel has a good network
with different skincare brands. That is if she does not become a TV presenter, or writes a book, of course. Vendela is
ready for another 25 years in the industry that she loves the most.
She has circled a round the world several
rounds. She is mega blonde, has frosty
blue eyes and a body so well shaped that
it would make any craft teacher jealous.
Obviously she has worked with all The
Great Ones and these days both TV and
Magazines around the world are fighting
for her. A hectically life for a supermodel
but this very day the seagulls are yelling
in the background and you can hear the
sound of the waves slowly hitting the
waterside. Her two daughters are watch-
ing breakfast-TV and Vendela Kirsebom
Thommesen celebrates a new day with a
steaming hot espresso.

Merit Bertilsson She is the forklift driver who became a make up artist.

Text: Caroline EngvallPhoto: Fotograf niclas, Eskilstuna
Her prizes are proudly displayed in the front window of her Eskilstuna
city shop. When Merit Bertilsson was awarded ”Best Make Up Store shop
in Sweden” for the second time she says she was shocked, but extremely
happy. She found out during the yearly Make Up Store kick off last spring.
– I could not believe we won again. I took my staff out to a dinner to
celebrate, and we had a great evening. My staff are putting in a lot of effort
to make our shop the best in Sweden, says Merit Bertilsson.
The competition is hard. The small country of Sweden has 35 Make Up
Store shops, all run by skillful make up-passionates.
– I don´t know what makes us different from everybody else, but we´re
working very hard on improving customer care and getting new members,
and we were also the first store to have special evenings for men.
That idea came up at home, when Merit and her boyfriend were talking
about make up.
– ”Why don´t you do the same thing you do for women with men?” he
said, and now our ”male evenings” are extremely appreciated. We have 15
to 20 guys participating at every one of those evenings, and they are using
more and more products. Cleansing products, moisturizers and our new
”Anti Fire” are very popular and the best-seller “Cover All Mix” is also a
sought-after article among men. The guys always return to the store!
What are you most proud of in your career?
– That our customers seem to be satisfied with us. I am also proud that I
have found such good staff to my stores. They are fantastic!
What do you think of Make Up Store as a concept?
– I love the products, they are the best. I support everything Make Up
Store do, and the CEO Mika Liias has done an amazing job. He is really
inspiring. I would love to own some more Make Up Store shops one day. I
have dreamt about working in this business since I was 13 years old, and
had to work as a forklift driver in the industry for a couple of years to make
some money to fulfill my dream, and I hope I can continue working like
this for a long time still.
Are you going for a hat trick and an award next year?
– Haha, I sure do hope so. We´ll do our best. It is our motto, and we try
to achieve it every day.
