Macau... this small place…so

small, yet incredibly diverse.

This diversity mirrors the

Pearl River Delta as a whole.

In its population, its business

development, and in its

future, Macau is a microcosm

of a changing Delta.

Delta Bridges mirrors this

growth as well. We began as

a company focused on just

one or two cities in the Delta,

but soon saw that the future

of this region lay not in any

one city, but in the rapid

interdependence of them all.

We have expanded our

services to include cities

throughout the region, from

Guangzhou to Macau. As the

future of development in this

region increasingly depends

on the cooperation of every

city, Delta Bridges will

continue to be here.

This, the inaugural issue of

Macau Inside Out, reflects

our commitment to this idea.

Our guide serves not only

residents of Macau, but

frequent visitors as well. Our

guide serves not only native

Chinese speakers , but

English speakers and other

foreigners. Our guide is both a window

into Macau, as well as a window into

the greater Delta region.

We hope you enjoy this first summer

edition, and don’t miss our next issue

in the autumn.

2-minute walk away from the center of Macau will bring you to Aa surprisingly charming courtyard

that will clear your mind from the hustle and bustle of Macau city center. Despite the typical concrete floor that covers the ground, the wall paintings and graffiti art make this spot the perfect place to enjoy the summer sun and find yet another surprising underground side of Macau. Getting there is pretty simple. Coming from the main city square, turn left after Bossini, and go ahead about 2 minutes, until you arrive to a street with cars. Then take a right on that street, and about 200 meters after the bus stop, you’ll find the Graffiti court on your left hand side. Our tip – bring your sunglasses, camera, a takeaway refreshing drink, and enjoy this unique area!

ou might not expect a quiet, laid-back shop right in Ythe heart of Macau city

center, so this spot is definitely good to know about. On the right side of Starbucks at the city square, you’ll find an unremarkable door leading into a narrow staircase, going up into a quiet building. One floor up, you’ll find Pin-to Bookshop, a hidden shop with a good variety of books, novels and classics, magazines and other affordable surprises, in both English and Chinese. Unlike many other bookshops in Macau, this shop offers really good English service, one that makes you want to return, and a relaxing

atmosphere, the kind that makes you want to stay. One floor up in this building will take you to Pin-to Music Shop, you’ll feel the difference between heaven and earth when the relaxing music makes you forget about the noise and crowd in the street below. In this shop you’ll find an interesting variety of different types of music, many indie bands and lots of surprises. Our tip – do what most locals do – take a book or a CD at the shop, ask to play your choice of music, and sit down on the small sofa with a relaxing cup of coffee brewed fresh on the premises, and take a break from the rest of the world.

Our tip – Take a good book, perhaps your iPod, and sit in the library’s outdoor garden. You’ll have to secretly hide your soft drink in your bag and have a sip when the guard isn’t watching, but that’s just a part of the whole Macau experience, isn’t it?

f you don’t know this sweet little cozy bar lying in Taipa Village’s most tranquil street, then it is Iabout time you do.

Old Taipa Tavern, aka OTT is what many of Macau dwellers see as the perfect place to grab an after-work drink on a hot summer evening, enjoy a good chat over a snack and nachos palate, or just appreciate the local scene of the passersby who visit the neighboring temple on this sleepy street.

Our tip: Pick a perfect day, just when the sun is soothing and the air is breathable, and go with good friends to sit on the outdoor benches over a refreshing round of drinks. On Monday nights the bar usually hosts a musician, and there are other special evenings as well. It’s always good to call in advance.

ou might not expect a quiet, laid-back shop right in Ythe heart of Macau city

center, so this spot is definitely good to know about.

Antonio Trindade

Macau Business Talk

H

“My Tip for doing business in Macau is focusing your goal of your enterprise, but at the same time respecting and blending in the local culture. Macau is too small to try doing things your own way, so you better listen to the local business culture.”

aving first come to Asia in 1985, Antonio now has more than 25 years of experience as an engineer, project manager and planner of numerous infrastructure projects in Macau. Today, he is a

leader in the field of environmental development and operations in Macau.

“I came here for the job, but stayed because of the opportunities that were concealed in the region.” said Trindade. “At that time, I was travelling between Hong Kong and Macau while developing the fundamental infrastructure of the city, such as the airport.”

Trindade explains that a single project was not complicated without considering the bigger picture that these projects have created. “When you plan a ferry terminal or an airport, you have to ask yourself who is going to need it, where are they coming from, and where are they going to stay when they arrive. It’s something you cannot avoid.”

“Macau is unique,” Trindade explains, “it has a very limited space and minimal resources, especially in the past, when the economy was much smaller than today. Our main task was to see what Macau could be like in the future. The city has grown and developed into what it is today because of its neighbors’ raw materials, tools, human resources, and its clients. Macau’s main input is the experience, the show.”

Trindade is acting as Chairman and CEO at CESL Asia, a company aiming at providing environmental infrastructure and facilities management, as well as consultancy services to both the public and private sectors. “Over the years Macau has changed a lot, and with the growth, I felt that there was a need to make sure it is a sustainable development. Macau is not yet green, and there are many measures to implement, but the consciousness that things have to change is there. We are on our way.”

Josephine Kwan, a native Hong Kong

business woman certainly has her

share of international experience.

Educated in Canada, she started her career

in the United States, went on to Japan, and

now manages her English Center, Focus

International in Macau.

“I came back to Hong Kong in the early

90’s, and started my business in Macau in

the 93. I have seen the changes in

Macau, and with the major changes in the

city I realized that education is the right

direction to go” said Kwan. For her,

learning English and getting international

experience should be a fundamental

element of the Macau locals’ education, as

they will surely interact with foreigners

while working in their hometown.

“Macau was the right place for me,” Kwan

admits. “Macau is a small place, where

building a social network is rather simple,

and the low living costs are very attractive

for any business."

Kwan has been running Focus

International Co. for almost 17 years now,

and today, the company offers English

courses, as well as studying aboard services

and consultancy. “One of the major

difficulties, especially during the recent

years, is hiring quality teachers.” She

considers it is a result of the booming

casinos, as more people would go for the

large foreign companies who offer high

salary, instead of working in education.

Macau Business Talk

DB Tip: try to imitate the people around you when eating and trying new things

Table manners /

When approaching another culture’s traditions regarding dining, greetings, and language, especially in an older culture like in China, it is no surprise that the issue of table manners can be delicate and this needs some attention.

Coming to the East, many of us usually see unusual things, unexpected traditions that we may or may not adjust to or get used to after spending a long time here. It is important to bear in mind that while Chinese people sometimes do things at the dinner table that many Westerns find strange and even rude, Westerners often commit errors of basic etiquette in the Chinese tradition.

Through thousands of years of cultural evolution, Chinese dining manners have developed to what seem to be a system full of implicit and hidden codes. Although times have changed, and dining culture has adopted more Western influences, eating traditions still have one foot planted firmly in the traditions of the past.

Generally, Chinese table manners are more informal than those of the West, although there are more rules concerning interactions with other guests due to higher levels of social interaction implicit in the often communal style of serving.

Chinese people, being naturally friendly to guests, will often smile at you while you struggle with the chopsticks, ask you why you are enjoying small sips of your wine, and be patient when you ask them obvious questions such as how to eat your beef steak with a spoon and a pair of chopsticks.

2. Don't eat food directly from the central plate; transfer it to your bowl first.

3. Don’t tap chopsticks on the edge of your bowl or other dishes, it is the same sound that beggars make to catch attention, or a sound made in funerals.

4. Don’t point with the chopsticks to something or somebody, nor move them too much around in the air.

5. Don't stab your food with a chopstick.

6. Don't stick chopsticks in the center of your bowl. This is commonly done at funerals.

7. Don’t let the rested chopstick point at others as this is impolite.

8. Do not give food from your chopsticks directly to somebody other's chopsticks.

9. Don’t reach over others when they are taking food.

10. Don’t make use your chopsticks to move a bowl or a plate.

e visit here, we live here, and we gain so much from the city. But Wwhat are we doing in return, really?

If you want to take part in Macau community life, the International Ladies' Club of Macau, aka ILCM, is something you want to know about. Here’s a hint – men are also allowed.

Whether you are a man, or a woman, working, studying, or just enjoying life in Macau, you can find a way to give back to Macau society.

Andrea Mansfield, ILCM president, describes the club in Macau as a stepping stone into city life. “Macau is a very small place, but even after years of living here, it happens sometimes that I meet someone who’s been here for a while, but our ways never crossed. It seems almost impossible in this city, but it happens…”

Founded in 1982, ILCM now has more than 140 members and according to Mansfield has a double role in the society.

“On one hand we care about the local needs, and try to provide a foundation and help to those in need. On the other hand, we develop the

community life and welcome different people to join us.”

When it comes to giving back to the Macau society, it seems that this club has its hands full. “We have three fundraisers per year, and we often get the cooperation of big companies’ social corporate responsibility departments. This has allowed us to donate 644,000 MOP in 2009-2010. The money goes directly to Macau orphanages, community centers and even to support two scholarships.”

And it is not all about money, Mansfield says, “There are many opportunities to volunteer. You can just give your time, and not necessarily your money.”

The Club’s activities include the monthly networking lunch, book club, coffee mornings and drinks after work, Mums & Tots sessions, and day trips with the family. “We are trying to offer a good variety for our members, to satisfy different needs and ideas. We have managed to gather a good group of participants, and we are always curious to know about more people, and meet new friends.”

Andrea Mansfield, ILCM

Rua do Campo. 162, Administration Building (Next to post office)

This center has everything you need when it comes to registrations of licenses, houses, notary services and governmental administrations.

What you want to know is the Legal Affairs Bureau (8987 2233), a department that provides you with legal advice on different matters such as house rental and other contracts, all free of charge. This keen service provided in Chinese, Portuguese and English will make you feel right at home, providing information in a friendly manner.

If you are seeking a visa for the China mainland, whether it is for a day-trip or for multiple entries, you have a few options:

For a short stay you may either go for the visa-on-spot option, issued at the China boarder, after leaving Macau immigration, in the China immigration building, second floor. Prices vary between 160-700RMB, depending on the country of origin. This visa is limited to Guangdong visits only, and allows maximum stay of 3 days. It takes about 15 minutes to issue.

Group Visa – for three people or more, any small travel agency in Macau center will offer you a good deal for one-day visa for about 30 MOP per person. You will have to provide your complete passport information, and will get a paper on the spot, which you will have to hand to an agent when arriving to the Macau border. This is a great option for a day visit in China, though limited in time, until midnight of that day.

Multiple entrances – the China consulate in

Macau (澳门罗理基博士大马路992号 , 922 Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues) is the cheapest choice when it comes to entering China individually. If you have a permanent visa in Macau, it will be a fairly easy process, and you could get a year long multiple-entrance visa.

However, applying for a multiple visa to China without a Macau permanent visa is impossible. If you are traveling and need one entrance to China, make sure you bring your passport, passport copy, your flight ticket, hotel reservation and a picture. It takes three days to receive the visa for prices between 200-300 per entry; payment is by bank transfer or credit card upon pick up. (879 15106)

hanging out at bars, you may wish to go to Wanda Cinema

MALL) to watch a new movie.
