YEAR IN REVIEW   This has been an extraordinary year in any assessment.  We have an unprecedented range of emo9ons accompany  this year’s events. The tragic loss of one of our students earlier in the year set  us on our heels for much of the year. While it brought us  all together, it did cast a significant pall on the year for us  all. I have no doubt that this tragedy significantly unse?led  a number of our students and that this was reflected in  some of the erra9c and challenging behaviour of a small  number for much of the year.   Compounding this were the personal family losses that four members of staff suffered during the year. In total, we experienced more than our fair share of grief at Berwick Lodge P.S. in 2009. On the upside, and there were many great things to happen – 2oth anniversary fete was a real highlight. Our PFA did a magnificent job in bringing the fete together and raising over $6,000 for the school. It was a very pleasantly nostalgic night during which we reminisced with the founding school council members who a?ended. Our student learning results con9nue to place our school well within the range of achievement for a school with our demographic profile. We do, however have some challenges to meet, par9cularly in the area of mathema9cs and we have already set in place a number of strategies to address these challenges in 2010.    Our new extension program ‐ LEEP ‐ has been a resounding success and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to con9nually improve the quality and breadth of our teaching and learning programs. Next year we are venturing into film making with our senior students for the first 9me. We had planned to do that this year, however, staff were not confident that we were truly ready and we deferred the ini9a9ve to 2010. This 9me we are ready and raring to go!   Our student and staff coaching programs will con9nue – with some modifica9ons – the You Can Do It program will be incorporated into our student wellbeing program across the school and will also take into account the emo9onal intelligence benchmarking that we undertook with students in Years 4 to 6, this year in conjunc9on with Swinburne University of Technology. The BER has been a huge issue and ini9a9ve for us. We are very pleased with the outcomes we have achieved with the Na9onal Schools Pride Component ($200,000), but are s9ll engaged in much dialogue with various people and organisa9ons over the P21 Component. Hopefully we will be able to resolve this issue to our children’s best advantage for their educa9on during 2010.   Finally, I would like to thank everyone on school council, all staff and parents in addi9on to our wonderful group of students for a great effort in this roller coaster 20th year. Do have a resaul and enjoyable Christmas break!   HENRY GROSSEK   PRINCIPAL

This is 6K’s magazine page on “Forensic Science” which is this term’s Topic. In these pictures we demonstrate how real Forensic Scientists use chromatography, fingerprints, fabric testing, powder experiments, foot printing and many more experiments to figure out who did the crime. We are in our groups demonstrating tactics to figure out who committed the “supposed” crime of stealing our ‘’World Vision Money’’ that was supposed to go to our sponsor kids who live in Cambodia.

Eracism Debate Project LEEP students par9cipated in a pilot online deba9ng project. They were the only team from Australia and had the opportunity to debate against teams from the USA, China, and India. The students made it though to the finals in the second stream. Kirima, Ryan and Jim were the speakers in the debate team but they were well supported by Mark, Abbey, Rahael, Sophie and others. The Eracism Debate Project was one of highlights of our year.

The Radio Show  is an  important part of  the Grade 5&6 curriculum. Every  student has  the opportunity to write and perform their own radio show in grade 5 and 6. The show goes live to air on Wednesdays between 2 and 3 pm on 97.7 3SER Community radio. 

The  scripts  include  informa9on  about  the  students,  the  school  and  the  community.  The students ojen interview guests either in the studio or over the phone. And of course they choose their favorite music to play.  

It is a fantas9c experience for the students!
