The next step: the Magellano 50 A cutting-edge classic

It looks to the yachts of the past but de-

velops their lines and differentiates it-

self from them all. It is the world’s rst

50-foot motor yacht to be able to sail

continuously, thanks to its Class A homologa-

tion and its RINA Green Plus certication for

maximum respect of the marine environment.

The rst – in the New Classic yacht category –

to offer light and large windows on the entire

lower deck, the rst 50-footer to offer a bow

saloon to enjoy the company of friends also in

port shielded from indiscreet eyes, but evenmore, the world’s rst 50-foot motor yacht to

offer four alternative layouts below deck to

perfectly respond to the owner’s needs. And

nally, it is the world’s rst yacht to avail it-

self of the new Easy Hybrid Plus system, de-

signed exclusively by the Azimut-Benetti R&D

Department, for sailing at up to 8 knots with

electric engines, in total silence and maxi-

mum simplicity.

 Environmental compatibility

The “Green Plus” certication by RINA is an-

other feather in the Magellano 50’s cap, which

conforms to all the necessary requirements:

from its low-emission engines (the Magellano

50 has two spanking new latest-generation425 mHP Cummins common rail engines,

with electronically managed consumption)

to its maximum performance propellers,

from its solar panels for keeping the batter-

Technical specification

ies charged to the anti-UV lms to decrease

the heat exchange along the glass surfaces,

from the consumption and tank level tracking

with loading and unloading history to the in-

fusion lamination of the main berglass com-

ponents, a process that takes place in the

Azimut facility of Avigliana, also ISO 14001

Environment certied. A second certica-

tion, FSC, guarantees that the wood used on

board comes from forests that are properly

managed (scheduled cutting, replanting of

felled trees). The work process is eco-friendlyso it also respects social standards.

MAGELLANO 50

 Designed to be lived

The lower deck is a masterpiece of design

as, unique in the world’s offering of motor

yachts of this length, it offers the possibility

to choose between four options. In the large

area between the owner’s cabin, positioned

amidship, and the VIP cabin in the bow, it will

be possible to choose the conguration stu-

dio + guest cabin, or studio + second dinette,

or second dinette + guest cabin, or studio +

utility area with laundry and drier. A possibility

to personalize that makes the relationship be-

tween the owner and his Magellano 50 even

more intimate.

The light reaches into the lower deck throughmultiple openings, ltering from the wind-

screen left in view and through the large win-

dows present in every cabin. The furnishings,

upholstery materials and natural colors are in-

spired by marine tradition, reinterpreted by the

Azimut Yachts Style Center in a contemporary

key. The rooms feature black walnut boiserie

with solid wood tops. The frames varnished a

glossy black, already present on the 74-foot

model, are one of the elements of continuity in

the interior design of the Magellano line. The

panels and doors have inserts in reed matting

and natural bers. In the cabins, the tops are

covered with leather, as are the intermediate

portions of the handrails.

 Ecology of the mind

The Magellano 50 was created to enhance

long stays on board, adding to the satis-

faction of reaching a destination the unique

emotions of the voyage as an end in itself

and the thousand pleasures of contem-

plative, unhurried sailing. To satisfy these

characteristics from a comfort point of

view, the Magellano 50 is designed to offer

various havens of privacy starting with the

cockpit, which accommodates eight peo-

ple on a U-shaped sofa arranged around a

large table, and continuing with the saloon

and the flybridge, which present

similar configurations. Even more

exclusive is the relaxation area up

front, located facing the

windscreen, furnished

with sofas and table. It

is perfect for isolating oneself from curi-

ous eyes even when Magellano is docked

or for taking advantage of the breeze to

keep cool during slow sailing. The cockpit

gives access to the saloon. Here one im-

mediately finds the galley, positioned just

beyond the entrance to serve both the in-

door dining area as well as the cockpit and

flybridge with equal convenience.

The heart of the lowerdeck can be configurated with a second dinette and a studio.

Relax area top view. Lightness and large windows characterize every area.

The Magellano 50 is also offered with hybrid

propulsion, an optional which will be chosen

by many owners considering the advantages

it offers: almost total elimination of noise

and vibration (up to 80%) which means sig-

nificant comfort while sailing and a further

reduction in consumption during short daily

outings.

The hybrid propulsion uses two 20-kilowatt

electric motors connected to batteries, along-

side the traditional engines. The batteries

are charged while docked and supplied by

the onboard generators. The electric motors

run when the diesel engines are off, pushing

the Magellano 50 to a maximum speed of 8

knots. As soon as a higher speed is requested

the conventional engines kick in. The passage

from one propulsion system to the other may

occur automatically (depending on owner

choice) and the pilot only has to decide at

what speed to drive the yacht, without doing

anything else.

 Designed to be safe

The Magellano line is designed for long

sails in all possible sea weather conditions,

especially unexpected ones. As a result,

the Magellano 50 is homologated in class

A and, in addition to the characteristics re-

quired to achieve the certification, its de-

sign incorporates features aimed at further

increasing onboard safety.

The walkways are wide and safe. The ten-

der is easily and quickly hosted onto the

swim platform, where it is stowed in a semi-

garage beneath the cockpit, a solution that

has never been applied before in the yacht

sector. A point in favor of simplicity and

safety of use that is added to many others

like the boat’s compact 15-meter length,

the use of technologies like the joystick for

maneuvering and the Seakeeper gyrostabi-

lizer, the totally unemcumbered bow area,

the high external railings for the protection

of all main deck areas and the flybridge,

and the presence of handrails positioned

wherever necessary and integrated per-

fectly into the furnishings. A set of struc-

tural features that invite the owner and hisfamily to drive their yacht personally. This

is not by chance: Magellano’s mission is

to faithfully accompany the owner and his

guests during sailing, offering the chance

for a closer, more intimate contact with na-

ture, the sea and – why not? – even oneself.

 YARD

it, employing all of the human and nancial re-

sources necessary to guarantee complete suc-

cess. Its clients enjoy two main advantages as

a result of this approach. Firstly, they can count

on superior resaleabilty and less depreciation

of pre-owned craft as there is

a broader market base. Sec-

ondly, they can choose to trade

up size-wise over time yet still

have the reassurance of sticking with the same

yard and type of yacht.

Cutting-edge production facilities

Avigliana is far and away the most technologi-

cally advanced motor pleasure yacht produc-

tion facility in Europe. Everything at the facility is

designed to ensure that every yacht produced

there is awless: from our multi-axis milling

machine which models very large moulds with

absolute precision, to our gelcoat robot capa-

ble of working with the same attention to detail

as the nest craftsman. However, what really

puts the Avigliana yard at the very cutting-

edge of the industry is its low environmental

impact and excellent worker safety conditions.

The boats are almost all built using the infu-

sion method which completely cuts out styrene

emissions. This is one of the reasons why the

facility was awarded ISO 14.000 certication

for the environmental management of its pro-

ductions sites as far back as 2007. The plant

is now going through the qualication process

to gain OSHAS occupational health and safety

certication too. Azimut’s 70 foot-plus yachts

are built at Viareggio in a huge 40,000 square

metre facility that is unique of its kind anywhere

in the world. Its interior encompasses: special-

ly equipped production areas for teams of top

artisans; an industrial paint booth for megay-

achts of up to 60 metres; a 600-ton travel lift;

fteen large yacht positions; a private marina

capable of accommodating up to 40 yachts of

over 80’; a styling lounge where owners can

explore the nest options available to them to

decorate and personalise their yachts.

 Back-up from the Group’s R&D office

Development is good for everyone and Azi-

mut is very much a company that focuses very

strongly on researching innovations it can make

available to its clients. There are many of these

aboard the Magellano. Not least of which is, of

course, the rst steering joysticks to be used

with this particular type of propulsion system.

The joysticks actually interface simultaneously

with the bow and stern thrusters and the engine

propellers to make docking manoeuvres com-

pletely intuitive even in unfavourable weather

conditions. They are actually a Xenta patentexclusively for Azimut too. Then there is Easy-

cruising, a system that manages all of the on-

board functions quickly and simply via a simple

monitor and ergonomic control. The new hybrid

system developed for the Magellano 50 is an-

other novelty from the R&D ofce. The R&D of-

ce also helped the design team win the Green

Plus certication – at the moment this is the only

pleasure yacht under 55’ to sport the new RINA

certicate. In-depth CFD research went into

verifying through uid-dynamic

simulations the Magellanos’ sta-

bility requirements when they are

exposed to side winds of up to

54 knots. Last but very far from least, owners

enjoy the security of the world’s nest dealer-

ship network for which organisation and profes-

sionalism are bywords when it comes to assist-

ance, spares and general client care.

Left, an impressive view of the Viareggio facility

which is at the very cutting-edge in Europe when

it comes to building pleasure motoryachts. Below,

the yard’s meticulous artisan workmanship and

attention to detail have not been lost despite the

facility’s size. Page opposite, a close-up of a mould.
