A luz como dimensão
do espaço e do tempo
Viva, contrastante,
atrevida; pujante. Depois, naturalmente, a
gestualidade. O traço é vasto, rápido, intuitivo;
assertivo.
esconde. Eis como Jorge Lopes consegue, na sua
pintura, uma qualidade temporal
simultaneamente pensada, reflectida, mas
acolhedora do acidente. Superadora do
acidente.
Light as a dimension
of space and time
On looking at the pictures of the eight paintings
that Jorge Lopes has selected for this exhibition,
it is colour that strikes one most. Bright,
contrasting, bold; strong. And then, naturally,
the inherent gesture, where the stroke is
expansive, rapid, intuitive; assertive. Finally, the
space, constructed by successive chromatic
layers, by the accumulation of lines, by the
erasure or semi-revelation of previous sketches.
And, with it, the material, which is evident in the
more compact or more transparent quality of
the oil, creating textures and light modes that
model them, reveal or hide them. That is how
Jorge Lopes achieves a temporal quality in his
painting that is simultaneously thought out,
reflected upon, but which embraces the
unintentional. Surpasses the unintentional.

propiciando a maturação. O ofício processa-se
assim na tessitura do tempo, urdindo o
planeado, o debelado, o imediato. O acidente
It is interesting to realise that its artist feels time
as an ally, in the building of a work that lays
incessant obstacles. Indeed, oil – the preferred
medium of this painter though he has also
worked with acrylic or Indian ink in works on
paper – requires waiting periods; and these limit
precipitation, propitiating maturation. The task
is thus processed within the range of time,
interweaving what is planned, surmounted, the
immediate. The unintentional (or its imitation:
more diluted colours that flow, mixing with
others that are not quite dried, or
superimposing themselves on others) and
surmounting it – something that experienced
painters refer to as a constant struggle in the
task of painting -, the integration of the
unexpected and the resolving of the problems
which that provides, is the territory in which this
painting also emerges.

referente identificável, a luz modelando o
espaço em pleno exercício pictórico. Ou seja:
este não é um trabalho de desenhador. Aqui, o
por isso é no contraste simultâneo, nas
projecções tonais, que a superfície
bidimensional ilude a terceira dimensão.
O espaço é, claramente, a grande tentação desta
Moreover, oil allows a transparency and a
density that are each unique. Thus, it serves this
painting, by an artist who often did plein air
sketching in his training. Surely the light
modeling of the space in full pictorial exercise
must come from that contact with the structure
of the landscape, in these compositions without
identifiable reference. In other words, this is not
the work of a drawer. Here, the stroke is colour
rather than concept and outline; the stroke is
shading, more than definition and line. And so it
is in the simultaneous contrast, in the tonal
projections, that the two-dimensional surface
eludes the third dimension.
Space is clearly the great temptation of this
painting – and it is achieved in the light
modeling as much as in the size of the frames,
and also in the fact the artist is working in
continuity, i.e. not being closed into one
painting at a time. And if the painter measures

a vibração do logos.
(confronts) himself physically in it, he is not the
only obstacle, but is also joined by the
aforementioned time. Between each moment of
“deserting” a painting and each “return” to it,
there is a whole look, a building of structure, an
approach to all that is being created. This is also
why we understand that oil serves him so well in
the building of his labyrinth.
His labyrinth is not alien to the complex web of
work titles, all the more enigmatic because the
non-figuration of this painting repels any
attempt at thematic definition. The experiences
of the artist, his plastic, literary or mundane
influences are intersected in them. Melancholic,
ironic, painful or happy, each title suggests what
the painting evokes, in a strict relation with the
cadence of the logos.

The same exercise accompanies this project.
who wants to move abroad) is the title of this
exhibition by Jorge Lopes, Portuguese artist who
has lived for some years in Berlin – city of
historical and cultural crossroads, a place
stratified par excellence, current island of our
idea of Europe. But what is it to move abroad?
What does this mean at a time in which the
boundaries of the world have changed, the
creative boundaries are forged in mixed
identities, in intersecting histories and stories?
The fora*, as the history of painting has shown,
is always, first and foremost, the search for each
painter’s own light; that of their masters, their
peers, their places of mystery. Naturally, it is
also the pursuit of confrontation, of
opportunities, of revelation. Therefore, in the
same way the fora* will always guard the
enigma of our ghosts, of our past interwoven

passado entretecido com o presente. E hoje,
porventura, abarcará mais o dentro do que
nunca.
A 8, neste
caso.

with the present. And today, perhaps, it will
embrace the home more than ever.
That is also why a painting is more easily read
and enjoyed in a plural encounter – eight, in this
case. As it shows us its artist, from abroad to us
here at home, involving us in the space and the
light of its web.
