Ji Cheng(b.1955 Taiping)

Chung Chen Sun(b.1935 Melaka)

088 RAPHAEL SCOTT ABENG

CORE II, 2013

Mixed Media on Canvas24cm x 34cm

PROVENANCEPrivate Collection,Malaysia

RM1,500 - 2,000

Raphael Scott Ahbeng is one of the most

established Borneo artists. He attended an

Art and Photography course at Bath Academy

of Art, United Kingdom from 1964 to 1967

and a drama course in London in 1973. He

won first price at the Sarawak Shell Open Art

Competition in 1959, 1982 and 1983, and third

prize in the Natural Malaysia Art Competition

in Kuala Lumpur in 1991. He served as an

advisor in the Sarawak Artist’s Society from

1999 to 2000. His paintings have been held in

the permanent collections of public institutions

and private collectors in Malaysia and the

surrounding region.

It is hugely remarkable that Raphael Scott

Ahbeng still keeps painting at his secluded

studio in Bau after all these years, at the

age of 78 and with a host of ailments, more

recently gout. It is as if painting is a great

therapy although it is his passion that keeps

the white canvas filled. Form, composition

and colours – the tripod structure behind his

art, whatever the subject or medium. He has

been practically painting since the age of 9,

and professionally from 1990. It’s standard to

peg his art career from 1964, when he took

up an Art and Photography course at the Bath

Academy of Fine Art in Britain, until 1967. But

in 1954, he already had his first solo. Raphael

is truly a legend, who is adept in painting in

oil, acrylic and watercolours, besides drawings

and doing cartoons for newspapers, which

show up his humorous side. He had also been

a teacher and radio producer, from a Sarawak

Government grant to do a Drama course in

London in 1973. In 1959 he won 1st Prize in the

Shell Open art competition and was 3rd in the

Natural Malaysia competition in Kuala Lumpur

in 1991. In this work titled Sugar Mountain,

which is not about any real mountain like the

one in South Carolina in the United States, he

turns it into a great abstract play of patterns,

drips, trellis, blobs and with a large frontal part

negativised to bring out the silhouette of its

vegetative surface.

KWAN CHIN (b.1946 Kuala Lumpur)

Kwan Chin was born in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur in 1946. He attended the Nan

Yang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore, where he learned using traditional

media including charcoal, watercolour and oils. A stint as a commercial artist in

an advertising firm followed, but a brief introduction to batik sparked his interest

and he quickly turned to batik art, which he became very famous for. Vividly

coloured batik paintings are his specialty and collectors all over the world tend

to have a copy of Kwan Chin’s works of art, which mainly depict scenes of

Malaysian life. Having been exhibited in London and Miami.

Distinctively Kwan Chin, depicted here is a group of boys and girls gathered to

feast on mangosteen. Kwan Chin’s expertise in batik and elaborate detailing

(such as the owers, the patterns on the materials) is showcased here in his

usual theme of Malaysian life, as they enjoy the“queen of fruits”. Always

direct in his message and portrayals, his technique is anything but that. From

the laborious task of producing the material from scratch to the detailing of the

gures, the sceneries and the colours, the artists’ labourious efforts are worth it

in the end, for he created an alive, exquisite piece of visual delight that is simply

bursting with colour.

ISMADI SALLEHUDIN (b.1971 Pahang)

An artist from Raub, Pahang with over 20 years experience in arts industry. Ismadi graduated from UiTM, Kuala Lumpur and

obtained his Masters degree at De Monfort University, UK. The theme of his work is the relationship between humans and

animals.

Ismadi explore the process of paint, using the human form as a vehicle to create emotion. Life, death, change and time are

predominant themes running through his works. Along with his feelings of a seemingly uncontrollable grasp that controls

our destiny. Our knowledge and inspiration born from our mistakes and decisions, offers us both pleasure through our

expression and uncontrollable frustration when our world is not created and shaped in the way we want it to be – helpless

in our search for perfection.

The expression of colours are very important to Ismadi. His works are accidental in the sense that he uses different

techniques like scratching on the canvas, splashing of colours, quick strokes of the brush strokes, spontaneous brush flow

and combinations of other techniques to produce on the art works.

Ismadi Sallehudin explores the relationship of nature and life in his works. A fine art graduate of Universiti Teknologi MARA

(UiTM) in 1994, he attained his Masters Degree in Art and Design from De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom

JAYSON YEOH 杨觉昇 (b.1963 Kedah)

Born in 1963 at Kedah, Jayson Yeoh is a self-taught watercolor

artist. His passion and love for art started at young age. Being

self-taught is not easy, especially taking up the brush after 15

years of not touching it. But he always felt that that“passion”

is a very powerful force, which motivates him to progress in his

art. In art there are both joys and challenges, and understanding

comes after many falls. This also built up his determination to

move forward. When it comes to creation, he believe in being

true to his inner voice, to“draw what I love, and love what I

draw”. After many years, holding the brush no longer is a chore

but an enjoyment. And the joy is indescribable.

FENDY ZAKRI (b.1982 Kuala Lumpur)

Fendy Zakri was born in 1982. Fendy Zakri is an artist based in Kuala Lumpur.

He held his first solo exhibition Seeing The Unseen at Richard Koh Fine Art, Kuala

Lumpur in 2014. Fendy zakri has a primal relationship with his art. He talks about

appreciation of mystery and women, and in the same breath addresses-with much

enthusiasm-topics like lust, desire and artistic taste.

His group exhibitions include Buka, Artelier Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2013), Inventing

Abstraction, Tapak, Shah Alam (2013),Peace of Me, White Box, Publika , Kuala Lumpur

(2013), Anniversary Show, Pace Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2012) and MEAA(Malaysian

Emerging Artist Award), Soka Gakkai, Kuala Lumpur (2011), Locals Only!, Taksu,

Kuala Lumpur (2010) and Young Art, R A Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur (2009). His awards

include Incentive Award, Mekar Citra Gallery, Shah Alam (2012), and Finalist MEAA

(Malaysian Emerging

His work might look like a mess of colours and lines on canvas, but fendy insists that

every stroke of the brush is deliberate, every line is carefully composed-not unlike

what happens behind the scenes with an orchestrated car crash in an action movie.

“I play with space, texture, colours, form, composition and balance ... And then

distort it to make my artwork look abstract. And to hide the images within my

painting even better, I explore ambiguous space, flat space and deep space,” he

says.

VOON KIM CHEONG (b.1968 Kuala Lumpur)

Born in 1968, in Kuala Lumpur, Voon Kim Cheong graduated from Saito Academy of Graphic Design in 1992. he sought

further training as a fine art artist and made a living in illustration, design and painting. Voon had been working intensely

on still-life and scenery sketching, using pencil and oil painting techniques from year 1993 through 2001, experimenting

with different approaches to his work. This experimentation instigated his first series - the ‘Performer Series’, and has

eventually led to the ‘Drum and Drummer Series’ also including the ‘Wau Series’ and ‘Gasing Series’ from year

since 2002.

In Voon’s vivacious oil canvases, reminiscent of italian futurism, curved kites dart and sway in the wind – tossing and

turning amidst turbulent thermals. Gyroscopically spinning tops whirl and jostle while lively multi-racial drummers pound

out the country’s life beat, reverberating and resonating with a dynamic passion displayed in a sultry equatorial Malaysia.

Voon is very fascinated by the sight and sound of our Malaysian cultural dances, particularly drums and the drummers. He

look at a round-shaped drums as the amalgamation of the sun and moon. They have active and passive characteristics, but

rely on the drummers to bring out the best vital – bring the strength and vibrancy to the team!

There is a tremendous energy and movement which emanates from the works of Voon Kim Cheong - a resonance and a

vibrancy which almost catches the casual viewer off-guard with stunningly beautiful paintings.

A stint as a commercial artist

in an advertising firm followed, but a brief introduction to batik sparked his

interest and he quickly turned to batik art, which he became very famous for.

Vividly coloured batik paintings are his specialty and collectors all over the

world tend to have a copy of Kwan Chin’s works of art, which mainly depict

scenes of Malaysian life. Having been exhibited in London and Miami.

Distinctively Kwan Chin, depicted here is a group of boys and girls gathered to

feast on mangosteen. Kwan Chin’s expertise in batik and elaborate detailing

(such as the owers, the patterns on the materials) is showcased here in his

usual theme of Malaysian life, as they enjoy the “queen of fruits”. Always

direct in his message and portrayals, his technique is anything but that. From

the laborious task of producing the material from scratch to the detailing of

the gures, the sceneries and the colours, the artists’ labourious efforts are

worth it in the end, for he created an alive, exquisite piece of visual delight that

is simply bursting with colour.

Raphael Scott Ahbeng is one of the most established Borneo

artists. He attended an Art and Photography course at Bath

Academy of Art, United Kingdom from 1964 to 1967 and a drama

course in London in 1973. He won first price at the Sarawak Shell

Open Art Competition in 1959, 1982 and 1983, and third prize in

the Natural Malaysia Art Competition in Kuala Lumpur in 1991.

He served as an advisor in the Sarawak Artist’s Society from

1999 to 2000. His paintings have been held in the permanent

collections of public institutions and private collectors in Malaysia

and the surrounding region.

It is hugely remarkable that Raphael Scott Ahbeng still keeps

painting at his secluded studio in Bau after all these years, at

the age of 78 and with a host of ailments, more recently gout. It

is as if painting is a great therapy although it is his passion that

keeps the white canvas filled. Form, composition and colours

– the tripod structure behind his art, whatever the subject or

medium. He has been practically painting since the age of 9, and

professionally from 1990. It’s standard to peg his art career from

1964, when he took up an Art and Photography course at the

Bath Academy of Fine Art in Britain, until 1967. But in 1954, he

already had his first solo. Raphael is truly a legend, who is adept

in painting in oil, acrylic and watercolours, besides drawings and

doing cartoons for newspapers, which show up his humorous

side. He had also been a teacher and radio producer, from a

Sarawak Government grant to do a Drama course in London in

1973. In 1959 he won 1st Prize in the Shell Open art competition

and was 3rd in the Natural Malaysia competition in Kuala Lumpur

in 1991. In this work titled Sugar Mountain, which is not about

any real mountain like the one in South Carolina in the United

States, he turns it into a great abstract play of patterns, drips,

trellis, blobs and with a large frontal part negativised to bring out

the silhouette of its vegetative surface.

Raphael Scott Ahbeng says“Sugar Mountain is an imaginary art

piece that I so intensely took up, as humour. There are salt hills

but this is a figment of joy, just playing around with shapes and

colour.”

ISMAIL LATIFF (b.1955 Melaka)

Melaka born artist who gained his formal training at Mara Institute of Technology, Ismail Latiff has shown his work locally as

well as internationally.“ I embarked on a conquest of inner space, texture and colour bringing the beauty of the natural world

indoor, that is transformed onto paper and canvas. I have explored my work in such a way which might lead to confusion and

curiosity on the part of my viewers, I hope that the viewer will explore my work through his or her own individual imagination

and perception of the world. I have arrived at my philosophy of life and work: Art is Life and one of the Best Introduction to Art

is Nature.”

Ismail Latiffs abstract and mystical artworks have gained recognition locally and internationally. A graduate in fine arts, Ismail

Latiff started his career in the advertising industry before becoming a full-time artist. Malaysian art writer Ooi Kok Chuen

introduced him as“... one of the greatest escape artists ever to wield the brush. His is the realm of the enchanted and the

enchanting, an utopian world built on love, beauty, purity and power.” Ismail’s works reflect a combination of movement, or

gerak, a Malay word and mythology or sakti, a Sanskrit word. Unique to all his paintings, is the shape of a circle that is placed in

the centre of each of his work. The circle according to Ismail, is a symbol of perfection and balance, and embodies his search

for wholeness, and oneness with the cosmos.

Deviating from his usual calm blues and soothing colours, Ismail Latiff opts for a stronger, striking and highly-contrasting

colours with a bold hue of red framing the canvas at the top. It speaks of congestion and overcrowding, if the title is anything

to go by. If interpreted from a different perspective, it does seem like an aerial view of the Earth, with Ismail Latiff’s circle of

balance posing as the moon. Perhaps, what the artist wishes to relay to the audience is that the earth is so lled with wonder

and magni cence, so much so that it feels like the world has no room for more. The different strings and splashes of colours

can signify the diversity on Earth, all amalgamating with one another.

Topeng

YUSOF GHANI (b.1950 Johor)

Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the

Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television

Malaysia (1977). Then he got a scholarship to study for his BFA at the George Mason University in the United States (1981),

and MFA at the Catholic University in Washington, USA (1983). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti ITM with the rank

of Associate Professor, but unleashed some of the most memorable art series: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring,

Wajah and Ombak. He singlehandedly organised the Shah Alam Biennale involving artists from 15 countries on Sept 21-Oct

1, 2016. Yusof Ghani made his London foray with an exhibition, Segerak VI -Transcendent Figures, at the Asia House, on

April 3-7, 2017.

Bold and abrasive, this piece makes as strong a statement as its execution. Although the colours seem to work harmoniously,

there is a certain conflict that hangs heavy in the atmosphere. Perhaps it is the mystery behind the distorted mask or the rough

lines that bring out its shape, but Yusof Ghani had always been taken with masks. It started when he travelled to Sarawak in

1988 and 1991, and being exposed to the Kenyah and Kayan masks inspired him-both artistically and philosophically. It can

be used for a cultural statement as well as a personal one, as the artist himself had said that everybody was hiding behind

masks, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes not. One is a different person in front of friends compared to when

one is with his or her boss.

The slowly eroding local cultures, as seen in Sarawak, are also part of the main focus point in this series. There are many

faces, personalities and attitudes and culture that were involved in making this piece, therefore it is not meant to look nice,

according to the artist himself. This piece makes a statement without too many details, and induces a myriad of thoughts

and feelings from the viewers.

CHIANG SHIH WEN 江石文 (b.1949 Melaka)

Chiang Shih Wen was born in 1949. A Melaka born, bred and still residing, he

graduated with a degree in Fine Art from the KL College of Art in 1974 and has

been holding exhibitions ever since. A prolific painter, his pure joy derived from

his ability to communicate in this medium is evident to all. His work is exciting

and breathtaking within a scope of skilled compositions replete with stunning

colour that have become his signature in the art world. He believes that art

must break away from rigid rules to make way for freedom of expression. From

realism, to the study of perspectives, to the play of shadow and light, Chiang

has steadily evolved, establishing a fresh style in art.

He was awarded In Outstanding Award:“Young Artist Competition” in 1981,

organized by“Nanyang Siang Pau”,“Malaysia Landscape in Water Colour” in

1982, organized by The National Art Gallery.

Cubo-Futurism is a mix of two art movements emanating from Western

Europe in the early 20th century. From France came the Cubism bold, stylistic

art of Pablo Picasso and Braque from Italian the fluid and pulsating Futurism

style of Baccioni and Marinetti. Both art forms greatly appealed to the leading

Russian artists of the day when they combined major elements of the two.

Cubist and Cubo-Futuristic styles feature bold colours and the fragmentation

of the objects painted on the canvas. In Cubo-Futurism though, there is also

a fragmentation of forms, and a focus on movements as well as the absence

of the objectivity towards their subjects. There works are not static but have

visible thrust and energy to them, Chiang’s work is emblematic of the best

of this art form. His works integrate the elements of light, colour and space to

vividly create layers that accommodate much more of the subject in view. His

passion for the portrayal of buildings, together with the skillful integration of the

three elements has brought forth an art collection that views the environment

from a totally new light.

He has shown a lifelong affinity for apples, and has chosen them as his subject

matter because they are inexpensive, have longer shelf life than most fruits and

there are more than a hundred varieties. Kim Hai paints by looking at real apples

as he gets to touch and feel them, observe from different perspectives and place

them in various arrangements. Apples are his props for grand designs to project

life lessons and at the same time boast their beauty-shape, size and colour. Like a

manual from Sun Tze, Kim Hai orchestrates the apples into inner dramas of thoughts

to reflect human traits and conditions.

I have read the Conditions of Business. Guide to Buying at WELLS Auction Sdn Bhd and Important Notices printed in the auction catalogue, and hereby agree to be bound by them.

I hereby confirm that I am registering to bid at the auction as principle and will be held personally and solely liable for the bid, in particular to pay the purchase price, which is the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium (12% of hammer price) and all applicable taxes, plus all other applicable charges. I understand that the invoice will be made out in my name, unless it has been explicitly agreed in writing with WELLS Auction Sdn Bhd before the commencement of the sale that I am acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party (hereinafter referred to as “disclosed principal”) acceptable to WELLS. In such circumstances, both myself and my disclosed principal will be jointly and severally liable for all obligations arising from the bid and my disclosed principal shall be bound by the Conditions of Business by my bid as his agent in the same way as if he were bidding personally.

I further understand that if my bid is successful, I will be asked to sign a buyer’s acknowledgement form upon the fall of hammer and to make payment of 5% of hammer price (or RM500, whichever is greater) as a non-refundable earnest deposit before leaving the sale room. I hereby authorise WELLS Auction Sdn Bhd and its bank representative to request for bank references relating to the account(s) specified by me above.
