A STRONG VOICE FOR A FAIRER AND MORE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT Labour gave me the power to change my life. I want that for every young member. I always felt like politics wasn’t something I had a say in. I want all young members to have the opportunity to thrive in the Labour Party, not just a privileged few who live in the right place, have money or know the right people. As a socialist, feminist and a trade unionist I know it is solidarity and sharing in our endeavours that achieves results, whether that is marching against cutting maintenance grants or listening to our comrades in a meeting. We are strongest when we’re democratic, outward looking and working together. That is what our movement should be about, and that is the fairer, more democratic movement I will fight to build. “I'm backing Jasmin for NEC youth rep because she has done so much work to engage young people, particularly in the north west. A STRONG VOICE FOR A FAIRER AND MORE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

Labour gave me the power to change my life. I want that for every young member.

I always felt like politics wasn’t something I had a say in. I want all young members to have the opportunity to thrive in the Labour Party, not just a privileged few who live in the right place, have money or know the right people. As a socialist, feminist and a trade unionist I know it is solidarity

and sharing in our endeavours that achieves results, whether that is marching against cutting maintenance grants or listening to our

comrades in a meeting. We are strongest when we’re democratic, outward looking and working together. That is what our movement should be about,

and that is the fairer, more democratic movement I will fight to build.

“I'm backing Jasmin for NEC youth rep because she has done so much work to engage young people, particularly in the north west. She is a great listener, never excludes anyone and I think she'd be excellent at taking into account the views of all young people, giving us a strong voice and proudly representing our opinions on the NEC.”

- Abby Tomlinson, North West Young Labour

• I’ll create a National Young Labour Hardship Fund, supported by our Trade Unions, to ensure young members are never priced out of the Labour Party again.

• New young members aren’t properly welcomed into the party; it’s confusing to know where to go, how to get involved or even what Young Labour is. I’ll change that by putting a Young Labour contact on the back of your membership cards and introducing a Young Labour welcome pack for every new young member.

• Introduce an Accessibility Officer on the Young Labour and Labour Students’ national committees to prioritise access and ensure Young Labour is never out of reach for those who do not have the means to pay.

• It’s important we conduct debate in a fair way and push for tougher action on bullying and personal abuse across the movement by writing a new code of conduct for Young Labour and Labour Students groups to tackle this.

• I’ll ensure the Party introduces a ‘pay what you can afford’ rate for young members attending national events so you’re never priced out of getting involved.

• I’ll introduce a Mental Health Rep on the national Young Labour committee to follow Jeremy’s lead in putting mental health stigma at the top of our priorities

• I’ll fight to ensure every CLP has a youth officer, and that they’re all under 27.

A Fairer, More Accessible Movement for all

For many working class, BAME, LGBTQ+, Disabled and Women members, getting involved in Labour can be an uphill struggle. We talk a lot about being the

socialist party of equality but unfortunately we don’t often practice what we preach.

Whether it’s factional infighting, the rising costs of events, or prejudicial attitudes the Labour Party must change to become a fairer more accessible

party.

• National conferences are great events but, I’ll make sure there are at least four national events per year to give young members the opportunities to meet up, debate issues and learn from each other.

• We must do more when it comes to making Young Labour the diverse organisation it should be. I’ll build on the Young Labour equalities academy and introduce an annual liberation conference to give equality the priority it deserves.

• I’ll do more to support young members involved in running Young Labour groups by creating a Young Labour Leaders’ Network to share best practice and help members develop skills to make their group more active.

My Record: • I set up the Wirral Young Labour hardship

fund by putting on a production of the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

• I worked with Labour North West to introduce a ‘pay what you can afford’ policy for Regional North West Young Labour conference

• I am the women’s officer for Liverpool Young Labour

• I am the TULO officer for Liverpool Young labour

“I support Jasmin for Young Labour NEC rep. Not only because Jasmin is a fellow CWU member but because I truly believe she is the best person for the job. I have seen first hand the passion Jas has for the Labour movement and listened to her ideas for change to improve Young Labour and I for one am excited by Jasmin's ideas. Jasmin has working class and Labour values at the heart of everything she does and would be an asset to the young labour NEC!”

A STRONG VOICE FOR A FAIRER AND MORE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

We need a democratic Young Labour with one member one vote for all elections, not just a vote for members who can afford the expensive

conference. Democracy in the leadership election this Summer showed just how much it can boost engagement and excitement in our party, Young Labour has

promised OMOV for long enough, it is now time to act.

Democracy needs to extend to policy as well. I’m running to be NECyouth rep not to use it as a platform for my own views, but to be your voice.

• I’ll introduce OMOV (One member, one vote) via online voting for NEC Youth Rep, Young Labour Chair, Ordinary Rep and International Officer.

• I’ll push for the party to stand up for young people - fighting for a proper living wage, votes at 16 and scrapping of tuition fees.

• I’ll increase accountability by doing a live-stream after every NEC meeting and producing regular reports so you can put your questions directly to me about the NEC and things being voted on.

• Jeremy Corbyn has changed the nature of PMQs and our NEC is also in need of change. I will follow Jeremy’s lead and crowdsource questions from all Young Labour members for me to put to the leadership on your behalf.

• I’ll work with our National Policy Forum Youth Reps and Young Labour Regional Reps to organise a series of listening events and policy workshops across the country so the views of members are at the forefront of everything I do.

• The views of young trade unionists will be central to the positions I take on the NEC and it’s vital these views are taken seriously. I’ll meet with Trade Union Youth Reps before NEC meetings to do just that.

• I’ll make sure young members are given the respect we deserve when it comes to policy - we have fantastic ideas its time for the party to listen at the NEC and at the PLP.

• I’ll do more to support young members involved in running Young Labour groups by creating a Young Labour Leaders’ Network to share best practice and help members develop skills to make their group more active.

A STRONG VOICE FOR A FAIRER AND MORE DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

• As NPF Youth Rep for the North West, I know how important debate within Young Labour is. Young members must be the heart of the policy process in the Labour Party. As your rep on the NEC, I’ll make sure young members are never overlooked when it comes to setting our party’s priorities.

• I’ll bring Young Labour to you, cutting costs and hours of travel time by ensuring we have youth conferences in every region

My record: • Launched numerous surveys before putting together my manifesto to ensure I

listened to the views of young members

• Travelled to every region of the country in the past 5 months attending over 50 Young Labour events to talk to members about their ideas and problems in Young Labour

• As NPF rep I have organised a series of Policy Forum events to listen to young members views

“I am supporting Jasmin for NEC because I know that she loves Young Labour and is dedicated. She has worked her socks off for Young Labour and I am sure that there is no one that would be a better youth rep than her. She's helped me become more involved in Young Labour and I know for sure that she will make an amazing rep.”

- Jomann Sherlala, West Midlands Young labour

A Movement, Not a Machine

My proudest moment in Young Labour was campaigning for three years to kick out the Tory minister, Esther McVey who introduced the bedroom tax. I was lucky

that my local seat was a marginal seat, my local CLP encouraged me and other young members to get involved and gave us the skills to become activists - not everyone is so lucky. We have thousands of new members who have joined in the

last few months since Jeremy became leader, but we can’t expect them to just stick around. As Young Labour we must reach out and engage with them!

Young Labour must improve its communication and reach out to members across the country, especially those in areas where there is no Young Labour group.

Only then can we begin to engage with young people across the country and get Jeremy into number 10 in 2020!

• Recent turnout figures in Youth Elections show our party’s communication is not good enough. I promise to ensure monthly emails directly from the committee updating members on what is happening across the country. Along with this I will ensure we create an active Young Labour social media, a blog and a YouTube channel for young members to keep updated and engage with.

• Young Labour needs to do more to support its members. I’ll introduce specialised campaign training for young members - provided across the country and online via webinars. Accessibility should never be a barrier to campaigning.

• We are at our best when we are working together that is why I will introduce a Young Labour Trade Union month into the Young Labour calendar to encourage young workers and Young Labour members to join a union and raise awareness of the importance of Trade Unions in our movement.

• Young Labour members are most passionate when engaging with issues they care about. I will encourage Young Labour to show solidarity at all public marches like the ones we have seen recently for the Junior Doctors and against cutting maintenance grants.

Page 7: Manifesto - Jasmin 4 NEC

• Campaigning doesn’t just mean elections- Young Labour can make a difference with community campaigns. I’ll support Young Labour groups to organise campaigns on issues from education to fair wages.

• Working with Trade Unions must be central to Young Labour, I’ll support the introduction of a Trade Union Liaison Officer to every young Labour group to put trade unions back at the heart of our movement.

• Local grassroots Young Labour groups should be the core of our movement, but too many areas are still without an active group. How can new members possibly get involved if there’s not even a group nearby? I’ll work with local CLP’s and trade union branches to create new Young Labour groups and ensure all areas of the country are covered by a Young Labour group.

• I will give Young Labour the tools to go into schools and youth centres across the country to encourage young people to engage in politics and the Labour Party whilst tackling political apathy.

• Young Labour needs to do more to give our members a proper political education; young members should be more than leaflet fodder and actually

• I will create a guide for new members about the structures of the party and how you can get your voice heard

A Movement, Not a Machine

“I am supporting Jasmin for NEC Youth Rep, as she is a formidable Labour Campaigner, who bring so much energy and enthusiasm and is an asset to our movement. She will be a strong voice for Young Labour members on the NEC, and will ensure our voice is heard.”

- Martin Edobor, Chair of Young Fabians

The Campaign

Since I decided I was going to run to be the NEC Youth Rep I knew the most important thing for me to do was ensure I could be representative of member’s

views from across the country.

I would never ask you to elect me if I didn’t put in the work and talk to as many young members as possible. From Sheffield to Brighton I have learned about the issues faced by young members across the country. Members from

Wales face different barriers to involvement in our party than those in London and that’s way I’ve spent the last 5 months travelling across the country listening to young to ideas about how to improve Young Labour

The most prominent things coming up were that Young Labour is inaccessible for those with a low income or those with disabilities, many areas of the country are not covered by a Young Labour group and that

communication from the central committee and party is not good enough.

Travelling and talking to members has given me a much better insight into the problems Young members of our party face and how we can improve it.

If I am elected as your NEC youth rep I want to take all of these suggestions into consideration and also continue travelling so I can be

the NEC youth rep that listens, not lectures.

“jasmin is one of the most hard working and welcoming people I’ve met in the Labour Party. She’s a tireless campaigner and always goes out of her way to make every event she's involved in as inclusive as possible. As our NEC rep i have no doubt that she’ll do a brilliant job at being a strong voice for young labour and represent a broad range of views”
