GRAMPIANS SOUTHERN GATEWAYNamed after a town in the Scottish Grampians, Dunkeld has enjoyed a stellar revival in the last 15 years.
The attraction to Dunkeld is instant, the well-kept main street is dotted with shops, the stand-out feature being the Royal Mail Hotel where visitors will be treated to fine dining as well as quality comfort food in a casual dining area. The extensive award winning wine list includes local wines from the Henty, Grampians and Pyrenees wineries.
Dunkeld is well and truly on the tourist map now as the starting point for many who look to spend time in the Grampians, but Dunkeld has many highlights of its own.
You will find an Arboretum at the end of a pleasant walk along the small creek through the town. This well-loved sanctuary has been cleverly planned, the walking track meanders past hundreds of trees including many giant red gums. Central to the area is a series of small lakes, that are crossed by several bridges. It is a walk that will take you on a physical, mental and spiritual journey, with the recent edition of the Arboretum
Labyrinth. Constructed from locally sourced Grampians Sandstone, the Labyrinth is a walking path for beauty and peace that mirrors the journey of life and invites us to slow down and appreciate nature and the surrounds. What could be better than watching the end of the day from the small pier with a stunning view of Mount Abrupt, alight in the red glow of sunset?
BUSHWALKINGFor the more vigorous visitor, a hike up Mount Sturgeon, Mount Abrupt or the Piccaninny gives the visitor a great view of the entire Southern Grampians range.
Spend time and enjoy a more informative experience to discover the natural beauty and heritage of the Grampians National Park with Grampians Eco Tours. Enjoy a full or half day tour to explore wetlands teeming with wildlife, dramatic rocky escarpments and close encounters with local fauna.
Dunkeld Arboretum is home to the second largest collection of oaks in Australia

Dunkeld
At the foot of Mount Sturgeon, the southern tip of the Grampians and the Great Dividing Range you will find the booming village of Dunkeld.
HERITAGE
The history of this fascinating district is well presented and documented at the Dunkeld Museum, the directions for which you will find at the Visitor Information Centre, a must visit to anyone coming to Dunkeld.
The timber industry has played a major role in Dunkeld’s history. Fitzpatrick’s Sawmill located in the Arboretum precinct was established in 1943 and is of historical significance. The hardwood collected from neighbouring forests and farms and sawn at the mill was used extensively in building construction and the redgum also for paving. The mill was one of the last surviving mills in the state, ceasing operation in 2001. Logs still remain at the site ready for milling.
The first known inhabitants, the Chup Wurrung people were surrounded by an abundance of food and were able to live a relatively settled life, constructing substantial huts. European settlement occurred in 1836 following Major Thomas Mitchell’s expedition. Squatters with their flocks and herds moved into the area with amazing speed between 1836 - 1842.
The following decade saw the establishment of large pastoral estates with the construction of stately blue stone homesteads, many of which still exist today.
SPOILT FOR OPTIONSDunkeld is quite simply spoilt with accommodation options. From the Community Caravan Park to the ultra-modern Eco-Lodges, traditional Bed & Breakfast to log cabins. It is no wonder more people are choosing to stay in Dunkeld as a base for a Grampians adventure.
Dunkeld hosts various events throughout the year, the most famous being the Dunkeld races, held annually in November on the second Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. For art and cultural lovers the 3 Peaks Festival is held annually in October and proves to be a weekend that has something for everyone. Still looking for a challenge? The more adventurous will enjoy the satisfaction of competing in the Dunkeld Adventure annual Serra Terror event. The 80 kilometre two-day endurance event is held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
The village of Dunkeld provides a natural peaceful setting for those seeking a more contemplative experience. Both the Cloud Mountain Retreat and Griffins Hill Retreat offer time and space to do just that. Relax with a session of Iyengar Yoga or get in touch with your inner self through meditation and reflective sessions.
