PAMÄTIHODNOSTIHrad 1 F1Národná kultúrna pamiatka, mohutná obdĺžniková bloková stavba so štyrmi nárožnými vežami stojí na strategickom mieste osídlenom už v dobe keltskej a veľkomoravskej. Architektúru hradu najviac poznačili dostavby a prestavby v období gotiky, renesancie a počas panovania Márie Terézie. V roku 1811 vyhorel. Rekonštrukcia sa uskutočnila až v šesťdesiatych rokoch 20. storočia. V súčasnosti sú na hrade expozície Slovenského národného múzea a reprezentačné priestory štátnych inštitúcií.
Dóm sv. Martina 2 F2Národná kultúrna pamiatka, gotický kostol s viacerými kaplnkami vysvätený v r. 1452. V r. 1563-1830 tu korunovali 11 uhorských kráľov a 8 kráľovských manželiek. Veža kostola je vysoká 85 m, na jej vrchole sa nachádza pozlátený vankúš s rozmermi 2 x 2 m, leží na ňom pozlátená kópia uhorskej kráľovskej koruny, ktorej výška je 1 m a váha 300 kg.
Stará radnica 3 F3Komplex viacerých budov z rôznych slohových období, sídlila v nej samospráva mesta na čele s richtárom. Jadro radnice vzniklo v 1. pol. 15. storočia z domu richtára Jakuba. Od r. 1868 sídlo Mestského múzea s expozíciou dejín mesta a feudálnej justície. Pred radnicou sa nachádza Maximiliánova fontána, ktorá je od roku 1572 užitočnou a zároveň pôsobivou súčasťou Hlavného námestia. Patrí medzi najznámejšie bratislavské fontány, s ktorou sa spájajú mnohé povesti.
Primaciálny palác 4 F4Patrí medzi skvosty klasicistickej architektúry. Pôvodná rezidencia ostrihomského arcibiskupa so Zrkadlovou sieňou a slávnou zbierkou angl. tapisérií zo 17. stor. zobrazujúcich tragickú lásku Hero k Leandrovi. Palác sa dostal do dejín významnými udalosťami, v r. 1805 v ňom podpísali Francúzsko a Rakúsko po bitke pri Slavkove „Prešporský mier“. Fontána sv. Juraja krášli nádvorie Primaciálneho paláca. Fontána pochádza zo 17. storočia a znázorňuje rytiera Juraja ako zabíja trojhlavého draka.
Michalská brána 5 E3Gotická brána z 1. pol. 14. stor., tvorí ju hranolová veža s priechodom v prízemí. Po obnove veže v r. 1960-61 Mestské múzeum vo veži vybudovalo expozíciu zbraní a fortifikačných stavieb mesta.
Kostol a kláštor františkánov 6 F3Kostol – najstaršia zachovaná sakrálna stavba v Bratislave, bol dostavaný v gotickom slohu v r. 1297. Počas korunovácií kráľ pasoval v tomto kostole rytierov zlatej ostrohy. Veľké siene kláštora sa využívali pre väčšie zhromaždenia, voľbu richtára, zasadal tu krajinský snem, v r. 1526 tu zvolili uhorské stavy za kráľa Ferdinanda Habsburského.
Academia Istropolitana 7 F3Národná kultúrna pamiatka, prvá univerzita na území dnešného Slovenska, založená r. 1465 Matejom Korvínom.
Kostol a kláštor klarisiek 8 F3Na jeho mieste už v 1. pol. 13. stor. stál kláštor cisterciánok, po založení mesta prišli na ich miesto klarisky. Okolo r. 1400 postavili na obvodové múry pozoruhodnú kamennú vežu, ktorá svojou členitou architektúrou a bohatou sochárskou výzdobou patrí k vrcholu gotickej architektúry v Bratislave. V súčasnosti slúži ako koncertná sieň.
Dom u dobrého pastiera 9 F2Najvýznamnejšia ukážka drobnej rokokovej architektúry v strednej Európe z 2. pol. 18. stor. Expozícia hodín Mestského múzea.
Grassalkovičov palác 10 D3V r. 1760 si ho dal postaviť gróf Anton Grassalkovič. V 18. stor. bol palác miestom čulého spoločenského života, koncertoval tu Jozef Haydn. Po ukončení rekonštrukcie v r. 1996 sa stal sídlom prezidenta SR. Za rezidenciou prezidenta sa rozprestiera najkrajší bratislavský verejný park. Dnes záhrada patrí k obľúbeným miestam oddychu Bratislavčanov.
Slovenské národné divadlo 11 F4Neorenesančná budova podľa projektu viedenských architektov F. Fellnera a H. Helmera. V súčasnosti sa v ňom hrajú operné a baletné predstavenia. Ganymedova

Reduta 12 G4Na mieste bývalej erárnej sýpky postavili v rokoch 1913 – 1919 eklektickú novostavbu, čím mesto získalo priestory na usporiadanie rozličných spoločenských udalostí a koncertov. Dnes je sídlom Slovenskej filharmónie
Univerzita J. A. Komenského 13 G5Budova pôvodne stavaná ako obilná burza sa v roku 1937 dostavala na sídlo vysokej školy. Dnes tu sídli Právnická fakulta Univerzity Komenského.
Modrý kostolík (Kostol sv. Alžbety) 14 F5Pochádza zo začiatku 20. storočia. Charakterizuje ho modrá farba omietky s učebnicovou ukážkou secesného slohu v sakrálnej architektúre. Mozaika na priečelí znázorňuje Zázrak sv. Alžbety a jej relikvie spolu s ostatkami ďalších svätých sa nachádzajú v hlavnom oltári. Zaujímavosťou je, že maketa tohto kostolíka je umiestnená v parku Mini-Europe v Bruseli.
Kapucínsky kostol (Kostol sv. Štefana) 15 E3Kostol z roku 1717 je zasvätený sv. Štefanovi Uhorskému a postavili ho mnísi – kapucíni. Výzdoba kostola je baroková a na hlavnom oltári v dolnej časti je zobrazená vtedajšia Bratislava aj s hradom. Za kostolom je dodnes fungujúci kapucínsky kláštor.
Kostol trinitárov 16 E3Barokový kostol postavili v prvej polovici 18. storočia. V interiéri kostola sa nachádza nádherná iluzívna maľba od tvorcu A.Galli-Bibiena.
Kostol a kláštor alžbetínok 17 E5Kostol je zasvätený zakladateľke rádu a bratislavskej rodáčke sv. Alžbete Uhorskej. Barokový kostol postavili v roku 1743 a západne od kostola sa nachádza budova bývalého kláštora alžbetínok, ktorý je dnes nemocnicou.
Kostol sv. Ladislava 18 E4Chrám vystavali v roku 1830 za účasti ostrihomského arcibiskupa Alexandra Rudnaya a vďaka štedrým milodarom veriacich. V nedeľu doobeda sú bohoslužby v anglickom jazyku.
Veľký evanjelický kostol 19 D2Autor projektu Matúš Walch využil slohové prvky klasicizmu a po nemecky hovoriaci veriaci ukončili stavbu tohto kostola v roku 1777. Dnes sa v tomto kostole konajú okrem služieb Božích aj mnohé koncerty.
Slavín 20 B2Národná kultúrna pamiatka, pamätník a cintorín 6845 príslušníkov Sovietskej armády, padlých počas 2. svetovej vojny. Z terasy pamätníka je nádherný výhľad na mesto.
Synagóga 21 E4Jediná zachovaná a funkčná ortodoxná synagóga v meste postavená v rokoch 1923-1926. V interiéri je mobiliár vysokej umelecko-remeselnej kvality.
Mirbachov palác 22 F3Najkrajší rokokový palác mesta postavený v r. 1768-70. Dnes sa tu nachádza Galéria mesta Bratislavy, ktorá návštevníkom ponúka okrem príležitostných výstav aj stálu expozíciu zameranú na tvorbu barokových umelcov.
Pálffyho palác 23 F3Pri obnove paláca sa v jeho múroch objavili architektonické články gotického objektu, ktoré sú čiastočne zachované v interiéroch. Archeologický výskum v suteréne odkryl rímske a keltské nálezy, kedysi tu bola mincovňa. Dnes sa v objekte nachádzajú expozície Galérie mesta Bratislavy.
HISTORICAL SIGHTS
Castle 1 F1A national historical monument; the large rectangular building with four corner bastions has a strategic location which was settled in the Celtic and Great Moravian periods. The architecture of the castle was mostly influenced by reconstruction works during the Gothic and Renaissance periods and during the reign of Maria Theresa. In 1811 it burned down. It was reconstructed in the 1960s. At present the castle contains exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum and representative premises of state institutions.
St. Martin’s Cathedral 2 F2A national historic monument; a Gothic church with several chapels, consecrated in 1452. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian kings
and 8 queens were crowned here. The cathedral tower rises to a height of 85 metres and is topped off by a gold-plated replica of the royal Hungarian crown (1 m high and weighing 300 kg) on a gilded cushion (2x2 m in size).
Old Town Hall 3 F3A complex of various buildings originating from different architectural periods. The Old Town Hall housed the self-government of the town headed by the mayor. The Town Hall’s core was established in the first half of the 15th century from the house of Mayor Jacob. Since 1868 it has been the seat of the City Museum, housing an exhibition of town history and feudal justice. Before the town hall stands Maximilian’s fountain, which since 1572 has been simultaneously a useful and attractive element of Hlavné námestie square. It is one of Bratislava’s most famous fountains, the subject of many legends.
Primate’s Palace 4 F4A gem of Neo-Classical architecture. The original residence of the Esztergom Archbishop. It includes a Mirror Hall and a famous collection of 17th century English tapestries depicting the tragic love of Hero and Leander. The palace made history during an important event in 1805; after the battle of Austerlitz, France and Austria signed the “Peace of Pressburg” treaty in the palace. St. George’s Fountain adorns the courtyard of the Primate’s Palace. The fountain dates back to the 17th century and shows a knight, St. George, slaying a three-headed dragon.
Michael’s Gate 5 E3A Gothic gate built in the first half of the 14th century; it consists of a square tower with a walkway on the ground floor. After the reconstruction of the tower in 1960-61, the Town Museum established an exhibition of armoury and the city’s fortified constructions here.
Franciscan Church and Monastery 6 F3The Church – the oldest well-preserved sacral building in Bratislava, completed in the Gothic style in 1297. During coronations, the Hungarian king knighted the Knights of the Golden Spur in this church. The spacious rooms of the monastery were used for meetings, such as the mayoral elections and sessions of the Regional Parliament. In 1526 Ferdinand Habsburg was elected king by the Hungarian estates here.
Academia Istropolitana 7 F3A national historic monument; the first university on the territory of present-day Slovakia, founded in 1465 by King Matthias Corvinus.
Church and Nunnery of the Order of the Sisters of St. Clare 8 F3This Cistercian nunnery on the site of the present Church and Nunnery of the Sisters of St. Clare dates back to the first half of the 13th century; the Cistercian Order was replaced by the Order of the Sisters of St. Clare after the founding of the town. Around 1400, a remarkable stone tower was constructed on the external walls. The rugged architecture and rich sculptural decoration ranks this construction among the best examples of Gothic architecture in Bratislava. At present, the church serves as a concert hall.
House of the “Good Shepherd” 9 F2The most important example of small-scale Rococo architecture in Central Europe, dating from the mid-18th century, housing the City Museum clock exhibition.
Grassalkovich Palace 10 D3Earl Anton Grassalkovich had this palace built in 1760. In the 18th century, there was a lot of social activity in the palace and its guests included Joseph Haydn. After reconstruction works in 1996, the palace became the seat of the president of the Slovak Republic. The most beautiful of Bratislava’s public parks spreads out behind the president’s residence. Today, the gardens are a favourite leisure spot of the inhabitants of Bratislava.
Slovak National Theatre 11 F4A Neo-Renaissance building designed by Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer. Opera and ballet productions are performed at the theatre. Ganymede’s Fountain has stood in front of the theatre since 1888 and is one of Bratislava’s most beautiful fountains.
Reduta 12 G4On the site of a former Treasury granary, this
eclectic new building was built between 1913 and 1919, and provided the town with premises for holding various social events and concerts. At present, it is home to the Slovak Philharmonic.
J. A. Komenský University 13 G5This building, originally built as a granary exchange, in 1937 became the seat of the university. Today it houses the Law faculty of Komenský University.
Blue Church (St. Elizabeth’s Church) 14 F5Originates from the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterised by the blue colour of its façade, with a textbook example of secession style in the sacral architecture. The mosaic on the façade represents the “Miracle of St. Elizabeth”, and her relics together with the relics of further saints can be found in the main altar. It is an interesting fact that a model of this church is located in the Mini-Europe park in Brussels.
Capuchin Church (St. Stephen’s Church) 15 E3The church dating from 1717 is dedicated to St. Stephen of Hungary and was built by Capuchin monks. The church decoration is Baroque, and there is an image of Bratislava and its castle as they were at the time on the lower part of the main altar. Behind the church lies the Capuchin monastery, which is still in use today.
Church of the Trinitarians 16 E3This Baroque church was built in the first half of the 18th century. The church’s interior contains a magnificent trompe-l’oeil by A. Galli-Bibiena.
Church and Convent of the Order of Saint Elizabeth 17 E5The church is dedicated to the founder of the Order and the Bratislava-born St. Elizabeth of Hungary. The Baroque church was built in 1743, and to the west of the church lies the building of the former convent of the Order of St. Elizabeth, now a hospital.
St. Ladislav’s Church 18 E4The cathedral was built from 1830-1832, with the participation of the archbishop of Esztergom Alexander Rudnay and thanks to the generous donations of worshippers. On Sunday morning services are held in English language.
Great Evangelical Church 19 D2The architect of the project, Matúš Walch, used compositional elements of Classicism, and German-speaking worshippers completed the construction of this church in 1777. Today, the church also hosts many concerts, as well as services.
Slavín 20 B2 A national historical monument; a memorial and cemetery of 6,845 Soviet soldiers who were killed during World War II. The terrace of the memorial offers spectacular views of the city.
Synagogue 21 E4The only preserved and functioning orthodox synagogue in the city, built in the years 1923-1926. The interior contains furnishings of high artistic-craftsmanship quality.
Mirbach Palace 22 F3The most beautiful Rococo palace in the city, built between 1768 and 1770. The palace houses the City of Bratislava Gallery, which offers its visitors both temporary and permanent exhibitions focusing on the works of Baroque artists.
Pálffy Palace 23 F3During the palace’s reconstruction, the architectonic moulds of a former Gothic building, partly preserved in the interior of the building, were discovered in its walls. Archaeological research in the basement uncovered Roman and Celtic finds. There was formerly a mint on the site. At present, the building houses exhibitions of the City of Bratislava Gallery.
SEHENSWÜRDIGKEITEN
Burg 1 F1Das nationale Kulturdenkmal, ein imposantes rechteckiges Bauwerk mit vier Ecktürmen, steht an einer strategischen Stelle, die schon im Zeitalter der Kelten und des Großmährischen Reiches besiedelt wurde. Die Burgarchitektur ist besonders durch mehrere Nachbauten und Umbauten im Zeitalter der Gotik, Renaissance und v.a. während der Regierungszeit von Maria Theresia gekennzeichnet. Die Burg ist 1811 ausgebrannt. Die Rekonstruktion erfolgte erst in den sechziger Jahren des 20. Jh. Derzeit können auf der Burg Ausstellungen des Slowakischen
Nationalmuseums und die Repräsentationsräume der staatlichen Institutionen besichtigt werden.
Martins-Dom 2 F2Nationales Kulturdenkmal; gotische Kirche mit mehreren Kapellen, geweiht im Jahre 1452. In den Jahren 1563-1830 wurden hier 11 ungarische Könige und 8 königliche Gemahlinnen gekrönt. Der Turm der Kirche ist 85 m hoch, an der Spitze befindet sich das vergoldete, 2 x 2 m große Polster, auf dem die vergoldete Kopie der ungarischen Königskrone liegt, die 1 m hoch ist und deren Gewicht 300 kg beträgt.
Altes Rathaus 3 F3 Ein Komplex mehrerer Bauten aus der Zeit verschiedener architektonischer Stile; heute Sitz der autonomen Stadtverwaltung mit dem Bürgermeister an der Spitze. Der Rathauskern entstand in der ersten Hälfte der 15. Jh. aus dem Privathaus des Bürgermeisters Jakob. Seit 1868 auch Sitz des Städtischen Museums mit Ausstellung über die Geschichte der Stadt und der feudalen Justiz. Vor dem Rathaus befindet sich der Maximilianbrunnen, der seit 1572 ein nützlicher und zugleich attraktiver Bestandteil des Hauptplatzes ist. Sie gehört zu den bekanntesten Fontänen von Bratislava und ist von zahlreichen Sagen umwoben.
Primatial-Palast 4 F4Ein Schatz der klassizistischen Architektur. Die ursprüngliche Residenz des esztergomer Erzbischofs mit dem Spiegelsaal und der berühmten Sammlung englischer Gobelins aus dem 17. Jh., die die tragische Liebe von Hero zu Leander darstellt. Das Palais ist durch bedeutende Ereignisse in die Geschichte eingegangen – hier wurde nach der Schlacht bei Austerlitz im Jahre 1805 der Pressburger Frieden zwischen Frankreich und Österreich unterzeichnet. Die St.-Georgs-Fontäne schmückt den Hofplatz Primazialpalais. Die Fontäne stammt aus dem 17. Jh. und stellt den Ritter Georg dar, wie er einen dreiköpfigen Drachen tötet.
Michaelistor 5 E3Das gotische Tor aus der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jh. besteht aus einem vierkantigen Turm mit Durchgang im Erdgeschoß. Nach der Turmrenovierung in den Jahren 1960 –1961 hat das Städtische Museum die Ausstellung über die Waffen und Befestigungsbauwerke der Stadt in dem Turm eingerichtet.
Kirche und Kloster der Franziskaner 6 F3Die Kirche – das älteste erhaltene sakrale Bauwerk in Bratislava – wurde im Jahre 1297 im gotischen Stil fertig gestellt. Während der Krönungen wurden hier vom König Adelige zum Ritter des goldenen Spornes geschlagen. Die großen Klosterhallen dienten für größere Versammlungen. Hier fand die Bürgermeisterwahl und Tagungen des Landtags statt; im Jahre 1526 wurde hier Ferdinand von Habsburg von den ungarischen Ständen zum König gewählt.
Academia Istropolitana 7 F3Nationales Kulturdenkmal; die erste Universität auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Slowakei, gegründet von dem König Mathias Corvinus im Jahre 1465.
Kirche und Kloster der Klarissinnen 8 F3An dieser Stelle stand bereits in der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jh. ein Zisterzienserkloster, nach der Gründung der Stadt kamen die Klarissinnen hierher. Um 1400 wurde an den umgrenzenden Mauern ein bizarrer Steinturm errichtet, der mit seiner gegliederten architektonischen und reichen Bildhauerverzierung ein Meisterwerk der gotischen Architektur ist. Gegenwärtig dient sie als Konzerthalle.
Haus zum guten Hirten 9 F2Das bedeutendste Beispiel der kleinen Rokoko-Architektur in Mitteleuropa; stammt aus der 2. Hälfte des 18. Jh.; Ausstellung historischer Uhren aus dem städtischen Museum.
Grassalkovitsch-Palast 10 D3Im Jahre 1760 ließ Graf Anton Grassalkovich dieses Palais errichten. Im 18. Jh. war es ein Ort des regen gesellschaftlichen Lebens, hier trat z.B. auch Joseph Haydn auf. Nach Beenden der Rekonstruktion im Jahre 1996 wurde das Palais Sitz des Präsidenten der Slowakischen Republik. Hinter der Residenz des Präsidenten erstreckt sich die schönste öffentliche Parkanlage von Bratislava. Der Garten gehört heute zu den beliebtesten Erholungsorten der Einwohner Bratislavas.
