What goes in your washer-dryer?Before washing, you can do a great deal for better results. Divide your garmentsaccording to fabric and colour. Read the labels, follow their indications andalternate small items with large ones.

Before washing.Divide your washing according tothe type of fabric and colourresistance: sturdy fabrics shouldbe separated from delicate ones.Light colours should be separatedfrom dark ones.Empty all pockets (coins, paper, money and small obejects) andcheck the buttons. Mendimmediately or remove loosebuttons as they could fall offduring the wash cycle.

How to eliminate the most common stainsInk and biro Dab with a wad of cotton soaked in methyl alcohol or alcohol at 90°.Tar Dab with fresh butter, rub in turpentine then wash immediately.Wax Scrape away, then run a hot iron between two sheets of absorbent paper. Then rub in cotton withturpentine or methyl alcohol.Chewing gum Rub in nail polish remover and wipe with a clean rag.Mold Cotton and white linen should be placed in a solution of 5 parts water, one bleach and a spoon of vinegar, then washed immediately. For other white fabrics, use hydrogen peroxide at 10 volumes and wash immediately.Lipstick Dab with ether on wool or cotton. Use tricloroetilene for silk.Nail polish Place a sheet of absorbent paper on the side of the stain, wet it with nail polish remover, shifting thegarment as the sheet gradually changes colour.Grass Dab with a wad of cotton soaked in methyl alcohol.

Useful tips to avoid mistakes Never use your washer-

dryer to wash... torn, fraying ornon-hemmed linen. If it isabsolutely neccessary, place it ina bag for protection. Brightlycoloured linen with whites.

Watch the weight! For best results, do not exceedthe weight limits stated below(figures show weight when dry):

- Resistant fabrics:5.5 kg maximum

- Synthetic fabrics:2.5 kg maximum

- Delicate fabrics:2 kg maximum

- Pure new wool:1 kg maximum

Cashmere Gold: As gentle as a hand washThe first Washer to have "The Woolmark Company" recognition.

The Cashmere Gold washprogramme has been studiedfor machine washing even themost delicate and valuablewool and Cashmeregarments. The Merloni Elettrodomesti-ci wool wash cycle has beentested and approved by TheWoolmark Company for

washing Woolmark garmentslabelled as hand wash. Thisis the first gentle action handwash cycle approved by TheWoolmark Company.M.00221This has been made possiblethanks to the speed of thedrum at 90 rpm, even duringthe rinse cycle, thus

preventing the fibres fromrubbing.Always use programme 9 withgarments bearing the hand washsymbol: the washbasin andhand. To take care of your woollenitems, we recommend you usespecial detergents.

EXCLUSIVE

How to wash almost anything Curtains.

Curtains tend to crease a greatdeal. Here is a tip to reducecreasing: fold the curtains andplace them in a pillow case ormesh bag. Do not load anythingelse, so that the overall weightdoes not exceed the half load.Remember to use the specificprogramme 10 which automa-tically excludes the spin cycle.

Trainers.Once you have removed mud anddirt from trainers, you can washthem with jeans and other toughgarments. Do not wash trainerswith whites.

Quilted coats and wind-cheaters.You can wash quilted coats andwind-cheaters, too, if they arepadded with goose or duckdown. Do not load more than2-3 kg and never load 5.5 kg.Repeat rinse once or twice usingthe gentle spin.

How much does it weigh?1 sheet 400-500 gr.1 pillow case 150-200 gr.1 tablecloth 400-500 gr.1 bathrobe 900-1,200 gr.1 towel 150-250 gr.

Coloured T-shirts, printedones and shirts last longer ifturned inside out before washing.Printed T-shirts and sweatshirtsshould always be ironed insideout.

Salopette alert.Very popular salopette typeoveralls have straps with hooksthat can damage the drum ofyour washer-dryer or othergarments during the wash. Byplacing the hooks in the bibpocket and fastening them withsafety pins, all risks are avoided.

Holidays: unplug theappliance. When you go on holiday, werecommend that you unplug yourwasher-dryer, shutting off thewater inlet tap and leaving thedoor opened or ajar. In this way, both the drum and the gasket willremain nice and dry andunpleasant odours will notdevelop inside the washer-dryer.

MM ARGHERITA

You must add detergent and anyadditives following the dosagerecommended by themanufacturers: generally, all theindications you need are on thebox. Doses vary according towash load, the water hardnessand how soiled the washing is.Experience will help you selectthe right dosage almostautomatically: it will becomeyour secret. Before pouring in the detergentfor pre-washing in compartment1, make sure that the extracompartment for bleach 4 hasnot been inserted. When pouring in the softener incompartment 3, avoid making itoverflow from the grate. The washer-dryer automaticallyadds the softener to the wash ineach programme.

In compartment 1:Detergent for pre-washing (powder)

In compartment 2:Detergent for washing(powder or liquid)

In compartment 3:Additives (softeners, perfumes, etc.)

In compartment 4:Bleach and delicate bleach.

The secrets of the detergent dispenserIts important for a good wash

The first secret is the easiest: the detergentdispenser is opened by rotating it outwards.

Liquid detergent is to be pouredinto compartment 2 only a fewseconds before starting the washcycle.Remember that liquid detergentis particularly indicated for washcycles of up to 60 degrees on nonpre-wash items, so you will nothave to use button I.Liquid or powder detergents aresold together with specialcontainers that are to be placeddirectly inside the washer-dryerdrum, according to theinstructions found on thedetergent box.Never use hand wash detergent, because it may form too muchfoam, which could damage thewasher-dryer.Detergents that are specificallyindicated for both hand andmachine wash are an exception. One last secret: when washingwith cold water, always reducethe amount of detergent you use:it dissolves less easily in coldwater than in hot water, so partof it would be wasted.

Cutting costs efficiently A guide toenvironmentallyfriendly and economicuse of your appliance.MAXIMISE THE LOAD SIZE

Achieve the best use of energy, water, detergent and time by using therecommended maximum load size.SAVE up to 50% energy by washing a full load instead of 2 half loads.

DO YOU NEED TO PRE-WASH?For heavily soiled laundry only!SAVE detergent, time, water and between 5 to 15% energy consumption byNOT selecting Prewash for slight to normally soiled laundry.

IS A HOT WASH REQUIRED?Pretreat stains with stain remover or soak dried in stains in water beforewashing to reduce the necessity of a hot wash programme.SAVE up to 50% energy by using a 60°C wash programme.

BEFORE USING A DRYING PROGRAMME ...SAVE energy and time by selecting a high spin speed to reduce the watercontent in laundry before using a drying programme.

Bleach cycle and stain removerbuttonIf bleaching is necessary, the ex-tra case 4 (provided) must beinserted into compartment 1 ofthe detergent dispenser. When pouring in the bleach, becareful not to exceed the "max"level indicated on the centralpivot (see illustration). The use of the additional bleachcontainer excludes thepossibility of using the pre-washcycle. Traditional bleach canonly be used on sturdy whitefabrics, whereas delicatebleach can be used forcoloured fabrics, syntheticsand for wool.

You cannot bleach with the Silkprogramme and with the specialprogrammes (see page 4).Use the stain removal buttonevery time you want to bleach.Should you want to do itseparately you must pour thebleach into the additionalcontainer 4, press button H(stain removal), start the washer-dryer, then select one of thesymbols according to thetype of fabric. When you bleach during anormal wash cycle, pour thedetergent and any additives inthe special compartments, pressbutton H (stain removal), set theprogramme you desire and turnthe washer-dryer on.

The detergent dispenser can beremoved and cleaned: just lift it upand pull it outwards ,as indicated inthe figure. Then leave it under runningwater for a few minutes.

But where did all the water go?

Margherita - Instructions for installation and use

Treat her well and shell be yourfriend forever Your washer-dryer is a reliable companion in life and on the job.

It is just as important for you to keep it in shape.

Margherita is a washer-dryerdesigned to last a lifetimewithout any problems. A fewsimple steps help keep it in shapeand last longer. Firstly, you mustclose the water tap after eachwash: the constant pressure ofwater could warp a few of thecomponent parts. In addition, by doing so, you willavoid the risk of leaks when no-one is at home.If the water in your area is toohard, use a deliming product(water is hard if it often leaveswhitish stains around taps ordrains, especially of bath tubs. For more accurate information asto the type of water in yoursystem, call the local waterworks or a local plumber).Pockets must always be emptiedremoving even pins, badges andany other hard object. The washer-dryer exterior shouldbe cleaned with a rag dipped inlukewarm water and soap.

Never exaggerate withdoses.Normal detergents alreadycontain deliming agents. Only ifthe water is particularly hard, that is, rich in lime content, dowe recommend the use of aspecific product at every wash.A periodical wash cycle with adose of a deliming product, without detergents or washing, may prove useful.Never use too much detergent oradditives because this could cau-se an excess amount of foam, scaling and possible damage tothe component parts of yourwasher-dryer.

When in need, check the pump and the rubber hose.Margherita comes equipped with a self-cleaning pump that does not require any cleaning or maintenance. Small objectsmay accidentally fall into the pump: coins, hair clips, loose buttons and other small items. To avoid possible damage, they are withheld in an accessible pre-chamber, situated at the lower end of the pump.

It is important towash the detergentdispenser regularly.

To prevent driedwashing powder fromaccumulating, placethe dispenser underrunning water for a

few minutes.

Do not forget to empty all pockets: small objects can causedamage to your friend Margherita.

To access this pre-chamber, just remove the panel covering thebottom of the washer-dryer using a screwdriver (figure 1); thenlift the cover rotating it anti-clockwise (figure 2) and check itscontents accurately.

The rubber hoseCheck the rubber hose at least once a year. If you see anycracks, replace it immediately. When you use your washer-dryer, water pressure is very strong and a cracked tubecould easily split open.

Attention: make sure that the wash cycle has come to a full stop and unplug the appliance before removing thelid as well as before any type of maintenance procedure. It is normal to find that a little water comes out afterremoving the lid. When replacing the panel, make sure you insert the hooks situated at the bottom of the washer-dryer in the right slots before pushing it back against the appliance.
