MAIJA ISOLA’S CLASSIC PATTERN WAS BORN IN 1964 AFTER ARMI RATIA , MARIMEKKO´S FOUNDER,

HAD ANNOUNCED THAT MARIMEKKO WOULD NEVER PRINT A FLOWER PATTERN. MAIJA REFUSED TO OBEY

ARMI´S ORDERS AND – IN PROTEST – CREATED AN ENTIRE SERIES OF GORGEOUS FLORAL PRINTS. ONE OF THEM

FASHION AND SOME OTHER THINGS TOO.

When did you join Marimekko and how did it happen?CEO Mika Ihamuotila contacted me in late

winter 2013 and invited me to join Marimekko’s impressive designer team.

Tell us a little about yourself.I graduated from Aalto University’s School

of Arts, Design and Architecture as a fashion designer in 2001, after which I’ve worked in women’s fashion in Helsinki, Paris, Milan and Sydney. During my ten years abroad, I worked on pretty much everything – from wedding dresses and evening gowns to ready-to-wear and luxury fashion. Along the way I’ve also designed theatre and dance costumes.

Your first work for Marimekko is inspired by Unikko. Tell us more. Mika asked me to design a collection

celebrating the 50th anniversary of Unikko. It was incredibly rewarding to work with one of the most iconic print patterns ever. For the collection, I designed unique Unikko-inspired silk dresses, while trying to find a new and modern approach that matched the pattern’s

amazing legacy. I also paid special attention to Marimekko’s design ethos: simple, practical clothing for every occasion.

Unikko is a story about trusting the power of creativity and traveling your own path. What do you think? Unikko is definitely a powerful story. To

me, it represents courage and passion – the two things you need for creativity to flourish. Also, as a fashion designer, you need to think creatively all the time and embrace change at every opportunity.

Do have any fond memories of Unikko? My fondest memory is from Unikko’s golden

age, when my friend from Venice was visiting Helsinki. We were both invited to a house-warming party, where the entire apartment, from floor to roof, was decorated in Unikko. The pattern was everywhere: bedcovers, curtains, pillowcases, even tin canisters. The next day, we encountered a wedding procession outside a church on Suomenlinna – a popular summer spot for people living in Helsinki. The bride maids were all dressed in Unikko maxi dresses and

brimmed hats as they waited for the ceremony to begin. Unikko is still probably the first thing that comes to my friend’s mind when he thinks about Finland.

What is your favourite Unikko colourway? For the Unikko anniversary collection, I

designed a silk organza gown where gold and lemon-coloured poppy flowers appear against an aubergine background. The colour scheme is beautiful, modern and brave.

What are people wearing this summer?Unikko – of course!

What is Teemu’s summer fashion tip?I made a pair of collared shirts using classic

Marimekko print designs. This summer, I want to design colourful, pattern-happy pants for myself. Maybe even a pair of shorts.

What are you planning for your next Marimekko collection? Sneak previews?Besides dresses – lots of pants, jackets and

silk.
