development• Boys relate through aggressive nurturance (e.g. a pat on the

Generally True about Boys…• Boys do not hear, listen or see as well as girls• Boys can use their whole brains if encouraged• Many boys get bored quickly and lose their focus• Tough talking to boys often works


• Not about speaking more only, it is about creating CONNECTION with the language, with feelings, with life.

• Show interest in your child’s Chinese learning experiences and encourage him to share them with you

• Encourage your child to learn through meaningful language games• Cultivate a reading habit• Watch quality Chinese language television programmes together• Make use of objects in your environment such as road signs and

advertisements to engage your child in Chinese conversations

• Prepare well at home before your child goes to school, e.g. • Talk about things to prepare • Agree on a bedtime• Preparing a good breakfast before coming to school, • Packing healthy food and snacks for recess and snack time, etc…

1. Get ready for school


• Help your child practise new routines that they will use in school (e.g. travelling to school, what to do when your child comes home)

• Create an after-school routine for your child. Limit hours spent on electronic gadgets or TV to not more than 2h every day.

• Allow free play time at the play ground. Spend time observing how he plays and interacts with other children.

• Sleep by 9.30pm. Bedtime stories or small chats.• Have breakfast every morning before coming to school.

• Routines -> build good habits -> self-regulation and self-discipline -> character building

• Crucial in forming internal compass that guides decision-making even without presence of parents and teachers

• Painful at the start, but there is light at the end of the tunnel

• Help your child get used to managing unfamiliar situations(e.g. making new friends, getting used to their classroom)

• Encourage your child in different ways (e.g. celebrate their learning, create a comfortable work space at home)

• Share with them the values that are important to you• E.g. Do an act of service together, highlight positive values in family

members)• Be the child’s SUPER IDOL (to inspire him to be kind to others, not to be

over protective)

• Gentle Heart and Firm Mind• A child’s holiostic growth and development does not

happen naturally • Understand the child’s struggles and needs, embrace him

as a special individual, intervene, guide and support with a firm mind

• The teachers reminds students to love and respect Parents• Please remind child to love and respect Teachers


• Work closely with teachers to help your child learn better (e.g. visit the school if you can, chat with your child about what it means to be a good student)

• Listen with open mind – child may behave differently in school vs at home (diff amount of attention given)

• Always check with teacher

• Encourage your child to help out with household chores (e.g. create a poster to remind family members to keep the home clean, teach them to do simple household tasks)

7. Let’s help out at home


• Allow your child to make mistakes and learn from them (e.g. let them try to do things on their own, teach them how to ask for help)

8. Time to let go


• Find out about what they’re doing and how they’re feeling (e.g. ask them how they feel about their day, what they do with friends)

9. Show interest in your child


• Work with teachers to find out your child’s strengths and interests (e.g. talk with them about what they’re good at, ask them what they like and dislike)

• Take note that your child may behave differently in different settings. Exchange notes of observation with teachers so that together, we can help the child achieve self-regulation emotionally
