THE BODY OF CHRIST – THE LEAST ATTRACTIVE MEMBERS ARE OFTEN THE MOST VALUABLE

Before giving us the account found in the Second Reading, Saint Paul was talking to his converts of Corinth about the need to show more reverence for the Blessed

Eucharist. Many of them were ill and some had even died because of their irreverence towards the Eucharist. Paul implies that many of them are unruly and

guilty of many abuses, and serious ones at that.

Paul then takes up a new theme – the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which were being used wrongly in the Corinth. He explains these gifts and how the gifts give true

life to the mystical body of Christ.

He identifies the Church with Christ and the Holy Spirit as the main life line. Just

as the body and head are linked together, so also is Christ and the Church. As Saint Augustine puts it: “All this Church, made up of the assembly of the faithful –

for all the faithful are members of Christ – has Christ as tis head, governing His

body from heaven. And although His head is located out of sight of the body, He is, however, joined to it by perfect love” (Saint Augustine, On the Psalms, 56, 1).

The Church’s unity is assured by the Holy Spirit who assembles the faithful into a community and empowers it to carry out God’s work on earth. The same Holy

Spirit makes us members of Christ’s body. In our baptism, the Spirit molds us into one family. It is therefore important to know that the Holy Spirit continues to act in the Church and to give to all its members, regardless of social status, the

same dignity and the importance.

Saint Paul develops this by personifying all the members of the human body,

imagining the larger members as looking down on the smaller one. This serves to reaffirm the Truth that the members have to take care of one another since each

has its distinctive role in making the body whole and complete. Even the less

attractive, unseen parts of the body are valuable. Each depends on another in much the same way as Christians form a family whose members depend on one

another.

In the Church there are a variety of functions serving the same God: prophets, apostles, bishops, priests, catechists and laity. And each has the obligation to

proclaim Christ’s message to the world. We cannot do it on our own; we need the assistance of the Holy Spirit. So we pray: Father of light, you continually renew our lives by the Holy Spirit. We praise you for all your gifts and ask for the full

revelation of your will through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The 2016 Cardinal’s Appeal has begun!

We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis and Sacred Scripture that in order to love one another we must share the blessings

which God has provided to us.

In Acts, Chapter 4, we learn that the early Church shared all possessions with one another so that the apostles and early Christian communities could fully proclaim “the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them.”

We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without: without the gift of faith; without the essential human needs; and without a personal relationship with Our Lord. We are called to Share God’s

Blessings, and when we do, we find freedom and joy in proclaiming the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, just as the apostles did over 2,000 years

ago!

A menudo nos recordamos por nuestro Santo Padre Francisco y la Sagrada Escritura que para amarse unos a otros debemos compartir las bendiciones que Dios ha provisto para nosotros.

En Hechos, capítulo 4, nos enteramos de que la Iglesia primitiva compartió todas sus posesiones entre sí por lo que él los apóstoles y comunidades cristianas totalmente podían proclamar "la resurrección del Señor Jesús, y gran favor a todos ellos se le concedió. No había entre

ellos ningún necesitado ".

Estamos llamados a compartir de manera similar lo que se concede a nosotros por Dios y devolverlo a Él para que ni uno solo de nuestros

hermanos y hermanas hace falta: sin el don de la fe; sin las necesidades humanas esenciales; y sin una relación personal con el Señor.

¡Estamos llamados a compartir las bendiciones de Dios, y cuando lo hacemos, nos encontramos con la libertad y la alegría en la proclamación de

la resurrección del Señor Jesús, al igual que los apóstoles hicieron hace más de 2.000 años!

¿Te unirás con sus hermanos y hermanas en compartir las bendiciones de Dios?

Que Dios los bendiga por su generosidad!

St. John Chrysostom School is now registering new

students for the 2016-2017 school year. Please

call the school (718-328-7226) for a tour. We are

accepting students for PK3 & Kindergarten to 8th

grade. During the season of Lent, the students

are collecting toiletries to be distributed to the

homeless in our area. The children attend

Stations of the Cross services every Friday at

9am, you are welcome to join us.

de Cuaresma, los estudiantes están recolectando artículos de

higiene personal que se distribuirá a las personas sin hogar en

EL CUERPO DE CRISTO - LOS MIEMBROS MAS SENCILLOS SUELEN SER LOS

MÁS VALIOSOS

Antes de la historia presentada en la segunda lectura, San Pablo les habla a los

conversos de Corinto acerca de la necesidad de mostrar más respeto por la Eucaristía.

Muchos de ellos estaban enfermos y algunos incluso murieron a causa de su

irreverencia hacia la Eucaristía. Pablo relata el hecho de que muchos de ellos son

ingobernables y culpables de muchos abusos, y los graves en eso.

Pablo entonces menciona un nuevo tema: los dones del Espíritu Santo, que estaban

siendo utilizados erróneamente en el Corinto. Explica cómo estos dones dan vida

verdadera al cuerpo místico de Cristo.

Se identifica a la Iglesia con Cristo y al Espíritu Santo como su presencia permanente.

Así como el cuerpo y la cabeza están unidos entre sí, así también lo está Cristo y la

Iglesia. San Agustín lo expresa así: "Toda esta Iglesia, formada por el conjunto de los

fieles -para todos los fieles son miembros de Cristo- tiene a Cristo como su cabeza,

que rige su cuerpo desde el cielo. Y aunque Su cabeza se encuentra fuera de la vista

del cuerpo, Él es, sin embargo, se unió a ella por amor perfecto."(San Agustín, sobre

los Salmos, 56, 1)

La unidad de la Iglesia está asegurada por el Espíritu Santo, que reúne a los fieles en

comunidad y lo faculta para llevar a cabo la obra de Dios en la tierra. El mismo Espíritu

Santo nos hace miembros del cuerpo de Cristo. En nuestro bautismo, el Espíritu nos

moldea en una sola familia. Por tanto, es importante saber que el Espíritu Santo sigue

actuando en la Iglesia y en todos sus miembros, independientemente de la condición

social, la misma dignidad y la importancia.

San Pablo desarrolla esta idea a través de la imagen de los miembros del cuerpo

humano, presentando los más grandes y también los más pequeños. Esto sirve para

reafirmar la Verdad de que los miembros se tienen que cuidar el uno del otro, ya que

cada una tiene su papel distintivo en la formación de todo el cuerpo. Incluso las partes

menos atractivas e invisibles del cuerpo son valiosas. Cada una depende del otra, de la

misma manera que los cristianos forman una familia cuyos miembros dependen unos

de otros.

En la Iglesia hay una gran variedad de funciones que sirven al mismo Dios: profetas,

apóstoles, obispos, sacerdotes, catequistas y laicos. Cada uno tiene la obligación de

proclamar el mensaje de Cristo al mundo. No podemos hacerlo por nuestra cuenta;

necesitamos la ayuda del Espíritu Santo.

Oremos: Padre de la luz, tu renuevas constantemente nuestras vidas por medio del

Espíritu Santo. Te alabamos por todos tus regalos y rogamos que tu voluntad se

manifieste en nuestras vidas. Por Cristo Nuestro Señor. Amén.
