As  part  of  the  16th  International  Chawan  Exposition,  the  organizers  have  designed  Master  Class  Workshop:  Chawan  Chado  together  with  the  Chado  Urasenke  Tankokai  Singapore  Association  and  Thow  Kwang  Pottery  Jungle  to  bring  about  a  greater  awareness  of  Japanese  Tea  Drinking  Culture  and  Art  of  Ceramic  Making.      The  Master  Class  is  a  rare  and  exclusive  experience  bringing  ceramic  making  and  tea  drinking  to  an  interactive  and  educative  level    The  entire  workshop  includes  Session  1  and  2.  1st  session  will  focus  on  the  understanding  of  Japanese  Tea  Culture  and  Chawan  as  an  important  feature  of  the  Ceremony.  After  which,  students  will  get  the  opportunity  to  create  their  own  Ceramic  Tea  Bowls  from  scatch.    2nd  session  begins  with  the  appreciation  of  Ceramic.  Students  will  examine  their  fired  Chawan  and  understand  more  on  surface  texture  caused  by  firing  process.  Students  will  then  participate  in  the  Interactive  Japanese  Tea  Ceremony,  making  their  own  tea  and  tasting  it  from  their  own  ceramic  art.    The  organizers  truly  believe  that  the  Master  Class  will  be  a  worthwhile  experience  for  local  culture  enthusiasts,  embracing  the  reach  culture  of  Japanese  Tea  Art  and  strengthening  the  senses  of  ceramic  art  appreciation.

Further  Details      About  Ceramic  Master    Full-­‐  time  Singapore  Ceramist,  Steven  Low  Thia  Kwang  was  a  recipient  of  the  Distinction  Award  from  the  Nanyang  Academy  of  Fine  Arts.  He  later  pursued  his  Degree  education  under  the  Bachelor  of  Arts  Bridging  Course,  Curtin  University  of  Technology,  specializing  in  Ceramics.  With  24  years  of  Ceramic  experience,  the  artist  travels  extensively  for  exhibitions  and  seminars  globally.  Recent  he  has  been  invited  to  Bali,  Tanteri  Ceramic  by  Jakarta  Contemporary  Ceramic  Biennale  for  a  month-­‐long  residency  to  develop  his  newest  series:  “SeedforFood”  for  JCCB#3  held  in  22nd  September  2014,  this  year.        About    Chado  Urasenke  Tankokai  Association  Singapore      “Peacefulness  through  a  bowl  of  tea”  is  the  motto  of  Dr  Genshitu  Sen,  the  15th  generation  tea  master  of  Urasenke.  Registered  with  Republic  of  Singapore  in  1991,  Chado  Urasenke  Tankokai  Singapore  Association  was  established  with  the  aim  of  bringing  people  together  through  “Chado  茶道  the  way  of  tea”  encouraging  and  nurturing  peace  between  Singapore  and  Japan,  and  throughout  the  world.  The  highly  elaborated  cultural  activity  emphasizes  on  the  perfection  of  the  bowl  of  tea,  delivering  the  Art  of  Living,  supported  by  the  artisan’s  sophisticated  skills.  Chado  Urasenke  Tankokai  Singapore  Association  believes  that  the  guests  will  appreciate  the  taste  of  tea  and  the  aesthetic  concept  of  Chado  through  their  demonstration.    About  Thow  Kwang  Pottery  Jungle    Thow  Kwang  houses  one  of  the  last  two  surviving  dragon  kiln  in  Singapore.  Built  in  1940s,  the  wood  fired  kiln  was  used  for  making  ceramic  products  such  as  the  latex  bowls.  Currently,  Thow  Kwang  Clay  Artist  fires  the  historical  kiln  2-­‐3  times  a  year,  keeping  the  traditional  art  of  wood  firing  alive.  Thow  Kwang  is  a  strong  advocate  of  local  heritage  and  culture  by  providing  educational  workshops  and  dragon  kiln  tours  for  schools  and  the  public,  and  participating  actively  in  community  events.  Thow  Kwang  also  supports  local  art  development  by  providing  residency  for  local  and  international  artists  and  hosting  wood-­‐fired  related  events.

About  Chawan  Expo  Singapore    16th  International  Chawan  Exposition  2014    Initiated  by  German  curator,  Mr  Lou  Smedts,  the  exposition  tours  the  works  of  International  Artists  extensively  and  hosts  seminars  and  workshops  as  part  of  the  event.  This  year,  the  organizing  team,  led  by  Singapore  Ceramic  Master,  Steven  Low  Thia  Kwang,  will  be  hosting  the  exposition  in  Singapore  from  6th  Sept  to  14th  September.  The  highlight  of  the  exposition  focuses  on  the  exhibition  of  420  Ceramic  Tea  Bowls  by  140  International  participants  from  26  different  countries.  The  exhibition  will  be  held  at  Ngee  Ann  Cultural  Center,  with  the  Opening  happening  on  6th  September,  7pm  sharp.
