A b o u t   t h i s   e d i t i o n

The present book is the frst o several volumes presenting my granda-

ther’s writings and correspondence. The next, a volume o letters, is now

being prepared, as is a new edition o the lectures held by Schnabel in1945 at the University o Chicago. Those lectures were partly abridged

or their frst publication in 1970 as   My Lie and Music . Oering the

books with the lectures and letters represents one o the three aims pur-

sued by the Schnabel Music Foundation, a company located in Stamord,

Connecticut. The Foundation‘s two other goals are to make all o Artur

Schnabel’s completed compositions available in print, and to reissue his-

toric recordings by Therese Behr Schnabel, Helen Schnabel and Karl

Ulrich Schnabel. It is our good ortune to have the help and support

o dedicated advisors at three companies: The Wolke Verlag, Hoheim,

Germany, has joined us or the publication o the writings; the com-

positions are being published by Peermusic Classical, New York and

Hamburg; and TownHall Records, Chatham, New York, is in charge

o issuing the remastered recordings. We are privileged to call all the

participants our riends.

My husband and I ounded the Schnabel Music Foundation fve years ago.

The motive or this was tragic: in August 2002 our son, Claude Mottier,

was killed, the innocent victim o a trafc accident. He was a very gited

pianist who was not allowed to pursue his calling past his bachelor’s

degree in piano perormance due to an illness. His chosen vocation be-

ing impossible, he redirected his energies toward a scientifc occupation,

but at the same time Claude enthusiastically began to put his energy into

promoting the accomplishments o his musical amily. We have taken onthe task o continuing his work and bringing it to ruition.

Our work would be unthinkable without the help o the Archive o the

Academy o Arts in Berlin. Since 1999, the Academy houses the archives

o all the artists o the Schnabel amily; the musicians Artur, Therese,

Karl Ulrich and Helen Schnabel, and the actor Stean Schnabel, ArturSchnabel’s second son. The Music Archive o the Academy had been

working or many years with the Wolke Verlag where a number o books

about Artur Schnabel were published: the German edition o  My Lie

and Music , titled  Aus dir wird nie ein Pianist (1991), the catalog o the

Berlin Exhibition  Artur Schnabel. Musiker Musician. 1882-1951 (2001),

the Artur Schnabel. Werkverzeichnis (List o works) (2003) as well as the

collection o papers presented at the 2001 conerence in Berlin,  Artur

Schnabel. Bericht über das Internationale Symposion Berlin 2001 (2003).

I thank my co-editor Lynn Matheson, Berlin, or her support in prepar-

ing this volume; Werner Grünzweig, head o the music department at

the Academy o Arts; Peter Mischung, head o the Wolke Verlag; Patri-

cia Lutnes, Newtown, Connecticut; and my husband, François Mottier.

Our special thanks go to Mary Virginia Foreman Le Garrec, Biarritz,

France, whose generous fnancial support made the Foundation possi-

ble.
