Statement in Support of the Convening of the 21st

Century

Panglong Convention

Mon Affairs Union (MAU)

Accepting that the tasks of relieving various kinds of human sufferings, eradicatingepidemic diseases and building a peaceful and prosperous world in the 21 st century are

their major responsibilities, world leaders have been attempting their utmost to findsolutions by ways of mutual dialogues and discussions. Similarly, in order to find the best

solution for the political deadlock in Burma, leaders of various political parties and ethnicnationalities in Burma are also taking essential steps toward convening the 21

stCentury

Panglong Convention in which the best solution will be sought by ways of mutual

dialogue and discussion.

During the 20th

Century (February 12, 1947), various ethnic nationalities and Burmanshad fought together against the expansionists with the national, union and Panglong spirit

 based on Panglong agreement, and subsequently gained independence from the British.At the same time, in an attempt to revitalize the union and Panglong spirit, various

conventions, dialogues and conferences were held among leaders of ethnic nationalitiesand Burman, and as a result mutual understandings, mutual respects and unity had been

achieved.

Today, national reconciliation is critical in fulfilling the desires of people of Burma for 

democratization and human rights and the demands of ethnic nationalities to build a

genuine federal union in which the principles of equality and the rights to self-

determination are guaranteed. Hence, the MAU admires the Kalay Agreement and

Declaration issued by democratic, national and ethnic nationalities leaders and the

 promise of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for her endeavour to organize and convene the 21st 

Century Panglong Convention with all stakeholders in this critical time.

As a result, the MAU earnestly urges all people and organizations in Burma to work 

together for the convening of the 21st

Century Panglong Convention based upon the union

and Panglong-spirit and relevant to the time as soon as possible. At the same time, the

MAU fully supports and welcomes the process of convening the 21st

Century Panglong

Convention.
