World Orienteering Day, May 11th 2016The World Orienteering Day offers a great possibility to promote our great sport! Therefore:

On Wednesday May 11th 2016, at 2000 locations, we would love to see people of all ages taking part in some sort of Orienteering event.

Clubs from all over the world can make a fantastic contri-bution that benefits both education at school and deve-lopment of the sport.

The IOF currently has 80 member federations. The World Orienteering Day has a great possibility to be spread all over the world. The concept is now developed, we have the inspiration and we have enthusiasm.

We also have a vision to set a new Guinness World Re-cord. The current record is from WOC 2003 in Switzer-land, when 207,979 young people at 1381 locations ran an orienteering course. We shall beat the old record! 250,000 young people is our challenging target.

However, it depends how big the costs will be to carry out the record attempt in all participating countries. We are currently clarifying this with Guinness World Records Ltd in London and we will keep you informed.

In any case, we will count all participants during May 11th! More information about registration and reporting can be found on the last page of this information sheet.

Our VisionThe IOF’s goals regarding the organisation of this annual event are as follows:

• Increasing the visibility and accessibility of oriente-ering to young people

• Increasing the number of participants both in the schools’ activities as well and in the clubs’ activities in all countries of National Federations, and to get more new countries to take part in orienteering

• Helping teachers to implement orienteering in a fun and educational way

Visionary course of action• Each club of all national Orienteering Federations

gets in touch with at least one school. In this way we create direct contact with largest target group for re-cruitment to our sport.

• By the end of spring of 2016 all the clubs of the world have produced at least 2000 sprint maps (new maps and updated maps) in the areas of school playgrounds and nearby areas around their country.

• As teachers might need help to implement oriente-ering so the lessons are a fun and exciting experience, the IOF is working on providing teaching materials in different languages.

• The Regional Development and Youth Commission (RYDC) of the IOF coordinates and links interested Orienteering people from its national federations to-gether in a school orienteering network in order to exchange materials and experiences.

• After the event, the students get to keep their maps to take home and show to their friends and family. On the back of the map they will find information about local Orienteering activities especially for young people.

• The clubs register online on the IOF’s World Oriente-ering Day website and report the number of partici-pants and the GPS coordinates of the school.

WOD 2017 and 2018The next World Orienteering Day will take place on May 24th 2017 and on May 23rd 2018!

What is the TARGET AUDIENCE?The main goal is to work with schools, but of course we can also conduct trainings for club members or conduct activities with local partners. WOD focuses primarily on young people, although not exclusively!

• If you are a teacher and you want to take part in WOD with your class or with your entire school – great!

• If you are a member of an Orienteering club and you want to help a school to take part in WOD – perfect!

• If you are a club coach and you plan to register your club training for WOD – you’re most welcome!

• If you are a community member and you want to encou-rage your community to participate in a healthy activity – WOD is a perfect opportunity!

• If you are an employee and you want to organise Orien-teering as a team building or company event – WOD is most suited for this as well.

What VENUE does WOD require?It does not matter if your WOD event takes part in a school yard, your neighbourhood, a park or a forest. You can even organise an Orienteering event in a shopping mall or using the map of the public transport system. Central is: Your WOD activity needs to involve orienteering skills!

What FORMAT should the WOD-events have?During the 24-hour activity of the WOD, you have a great opportunity to implement all kinds of exciting orienteering. You can orienteer during the day or you can conduct night orienteering. You can walk, jog and run, you can ride a bike and you can go rollerblading, you can do it with a friend, push a pram along, you can do it in a group and you can do it alone. Your own imagination is your limit!The following is an example of how such an event might be organised.

Fjällbacka School in action!At ”Fjällbacka School” they will use the concept of ”Skol-Sprinten” in co-operation with the organiser of WOC 2016. Course length is a 500- 1500 m sprint. ”Course 1” will be an introduction, ”Course 2” and ”Course 3” are a bit more challenging. Electronic punching will be used. On the back of the map (Course 1, intro) there is information about the club’s youth activities and upcoming events. This map, the kids keep to take home.

Egypt in actionIf you don’t have the possibility to arrange World Orienteering Day at different schools, you could bring all students from their school to a commom place. The Al-Azhar Park in Cairo is an example of natural and beautiful meeting point for this event. From ear-ly morning to late evening there will be activities in the orienteering friendly park.

AdvertisingThere is already promotion and marketing of WOD 2016 going on in many countries. These posters are from Egypt and France.

The IOF will supply all National Federations with a graphic profile of WOD 2016 including logo, pos-ters, badges, diploma etc. More information will be available in few weeks.

Guinness World Record

Dans le cadre de la Journée mondiale de l'orien-tation 2016, l'IOF a l’ambition d’établir un nouveaurecord mondial. Le record actuel est de la WOC 2003en Suisse, où 207 979 jeunes en 1381 emplace-ments avaient pratiqué la course d’orientation.

Le mercredi 11 mai 2016, l'IOF espère voir beaucoup de jeunes qui participent à la Journée mondialed'orientation. L’objectif est de 2000 emplacements partout dans le monde, et 250.000 jeunes qui participentà des événements orientation simultanément partout dans le monde.

En France, la commission jeune de la FFCO vous propose de vous associer à cet évènement par le biaisde vos écoles de CO, de la pratique UNSS, UGSEL ou USEP. Cet évènement peut prendre la forme d’unentraînement ouvert, d’une O’rencontre, d’une animation dans le cadre du sport scolaire.

Il vous suffira de faire parvenir à la commission jeune FFCO le nombre de participants (via un formulaireen ligne), des photos de votre évènement et un extrait de(s) carte(s) utilisé(e)s.

La première Journée mondialede la course d’orientation auralieu le mercredi 11 mai 2016.Toutes les écoles, tous les clubset tous les pays du monde sontencouragés à participer.

RegistrationOn the web site you will find all the information regarding WOD 2016. We will inform you when it is open for registration. When you have finalised your registration, a red dot will appear on the map.

You can enter on the map the coordinates for the location of the school or the place there you will carry out the activity. Your name, email address, mo-bile phone number are important information for our network.

Please also attach the map over the area of WOD 2016 as pdf-file.

ReportingAfter carrying out your acti-vity you report the number of participants, registrering the total amount of women and men and their ages.

When you have finalised your report the red dot changes to green. You can also see statistics on the participation of your activity, your country and how many people have participated world wide.

PartnersOur partners will be carefully selected, so that both the IOF and the respective partners can get benefit from the advantages of a fruitful collaboration.
