Year in ReviewW
hen interviewing for a job, supplying a reference, or
writing an employee review, it’s not unusual to be asked
about strengths and weaknesses. For me, a person’s
strengths always seem to come to mind easily. Weaknesses,
however, can be a struggle to identify. Nevertheless, it’s important
to recognize both of these areas to ultimately better yourself and
your business.
Something I like to do throughout the year is track my strengths
and those of my supervisees. I keep a running list of all the things
I feel I have accomplished throughout the year and a separate
list for those I supervise. As a goal is accomplished or a project is
well-executed, I make sure and add it to my list then and there so I
don’t overlook anything when it comes time to write reviews. It can
be helpful to keep a diary of dates and specific instances when an
employee went above and beyond. For salon staff, you could copy
and paste some of the positive online reviews if they reference a
particular tech. Documenting your strengths and the things others
excel at can be used to bolster morale and make a case for raises or
other rewards.
When it comes to weaknesses, don’t nitpick. Keep in mind that
concerns should be addressed as they come up and not be shelved
for when reviews are done. Instead of thinking of something
as a weakness, think of it as a goal for improvement. Whether
you’re your own boss or you’re running a salon, set goals that are
achievable. Keeping goals realistic will only motivate you or your
employees further once achieved. Think about the big picture for
your business and your team and determine what each person’s role
is in that joint success.
Reviews and job interviews can be opportune times to take
stock of skillsets and achievements, and help plan for a better
future. Don’t be afraid to consider both strengths and weaknesses
honestly and communicate them effectively. Understanding and
reviewing these traits not only make you a better manager, but a
stronger professional.

Essential Reading for Nail Art Lovers
Austin Nail Salon Brings Manis to Mothers of Children With CancerLast May, Austin, Texas, nail salon Lacquer
provided services to women who are rarely
able to take time for themselves: mothers of
chronically ill children. The Mother’s Day event
was organized by Beautifully Loved, a group
that provides wellness, beauty, and fashion
experiences to families of children with pediatric
cancer and other chronic illnesses. “They work to
help children battling cancer (and their families)
feel valued and loved,” explains salon owner
Carla Hatler. The salon had previously supported
the organization’s annual children’s fashion show
benefit event, so they were happy to be invited to
provide Mother’s Day services.
The event took place at the center where the
children receive their treatment. The women
received hair and makeup services as well as
nails, and they went home with gifts, too. “We
brought mini organic cuticle oils to give to the
moms to keep as a gift from us,” says Hatler. The
event was a welcome respite from the stress the
women experience. “The moms usually never
take time for themselves because they are always
by their child’s side,” Hatler says. “They were so
happy and grateful to have a day of beauty. And
it was a rewarding experience for the beauty
volunteers as well.”
In her book, Nailed It: Nail Fashion Technique, pioneering nail tech
Marian Newman shares an in-depth look into a 20+ year career
that has encompassed more than 50 British Vogue covers and
collaborations with many of the world’s most renowned fashion
designers and photographers. Always true to her own style of
creative curiosity, Newman reflects on some of her most outrageous
and spectacular projects in this visually arresting book. It features
her work with supermodels, for advertising campaigns (including
Dior and Alexander McQueen), on fashion shows (including Vivienne
Westwood, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy), and even on Lady Gaga
music videos. Newman reveals the stories behind some of her most
iconic nail designs, shares the secrets to recreating these incredible
looks, and explains which essential tools are in her own kit.

Nailed It Documentary to Air on PBS in MayDirected by award-winning filmmaker Adele Pham, the
documentary Nailed It explores the history of the Vietnamese-
American nail salon from its earliest days and tells the tale of
how a chance encounter in 1975 between 20 female Vietnamese
refugees and actress Tippi Hedren changed the face of the
industry. The film is tentatively scheduled to air on PBS’s America
Reframed on May 7. (Check local airdates at www.pbs.org/
show/america-reframed.)
Told through personal stories and interviews, the film is
intended to capture the “unforgettable and often hilarious
saga born of tragedy” involving the struggle to assimilate and
grapple with stereotypes. The film celebrates these female
entrepreneurial pioneers who successfully built careers for
themselves while simultaneously learning a new language,
culture, and land, as refugees from the Vietnam War living
in the United States.
You can view a trailer at www.naileditdoc.com.
The history of the Vietnamese-American nail salon is inextricably
linked to 20 refugee women who were the beneficiaries of Tippi
Hedren’s kindness.

ON THE ROAD
While on the Salon Fanatic Tour, I discovered the W Nail Bar, a popular nail chain in the Columbus, Ohio
area with four locations in Columbus alone. I visited one inside a DSW store in the Easton Market.

The W Nail BarColumbus, Ohio

The W Nail Bar has two of its four Columbus locations
inside Designer Shoe Warehouses. Easton Market is the
newest location for the chain.
The salon area is in the back of the store, but is open enough
that clients can still peer out and view the shoe racks.
Shoppers can also look in to view the salon area.
The W offers manicures, pedicures, reflexology, gel extensions,
and nail art.
Like the W Nail Bar, DSW is a Columbus-born business,
which sparked the partnership between the two brands.
Because of the W’s natural ethos,
the salon retails handmade cuticle
oils, lotions, and scrubs.
The salon offers jetless pedicure tubs
and clients pick their own handmade
scrub to complement their service.

Jeannette Alfaro created this marble design, perfect
for a special occasion. Follow her on Instagram
@iluvurnailz.
1. Apply your base colors. Alfaro used metallic purple
and white gels. Use colors that contrast with the
purple for the marble look on the white nails. Alfaro
used royal blue, fuchsia, and the same metallic
purple that was used for the base color.
2. With a thin detail brush, apply a small amount of
nail polish over the white gel and dilute it with
acetone. Apply it in random sections where you
want to create the smoky marble look. Add more
colors and dilute them with acetone until you’re
happy with the look.
3. Use black acrylic paint to outline the whole nail and
add black lines to create the look of veins going
through the marble. Add metallic gold gel on top
of the black veins to give it a pop.
4. Add different sized Swarovski AB crystals and gold
accents for a sparkly look. Use a matte top coat to
seal in the design.

When she applies larger crystals to nails, LeChat educator Wendy
Valenzuela has a new method: She uses the brand’s dip system base and
activator to adhere them. “First, I apply step two from our dip system
(French base),” she explains. “Then I place the diamonds.” When she’s happy
with the placement, she applies the activator around the crystal. “It will dry
the glue and the embellishment will stick forever,” she says.
Erica’s ATA’s Cuticle Sciver bit can be used to exfoliate the
dead skin around the cuticle and nail plate.
1. Pull skin back with your thumb and gently push back
the cuticle with a pusher. This will release the dead
cuticle off the nail plate. Start in the left corner using
Erica’s ATA Sciver bit at about 10,000 RPM in reverse
mode (RPMs will vary depending on e-file and skin
type). Pull the skin back and trace the cuticle with the
round safety top, gently pushing the bit into the cuticle
to exfoliate dead skin. Use the e-file in smooth passes
with gentle pressure. Keep the bit parallel to the nail.
2. Continue filing in smooth passes at the base of the nail
until the cuticle has been reduced. Use a nylon brush to
remove debris. Continue filing on the right side. Avoid
dragging the body of the bit through the nail groove
(doing so will over-file the nail plate). Rotate the client’s
hand to ensure the bit is parallel to the nail.
3. Use the full body of the Sciver to exfoliate the fingertip
and callused skin near the free edge. Use Erica’s ATA
Polisher bit with a drop of cuticle oil to rehydrate the
skin around the nail. This will reduce hangnails.

W ith La Palm’s five-step Volcano Spa, you can offer clients a memorable pedicure upgrade
in the same amount of time it takes to complete a basic service. Convenient premeasured product packets — and bubbling volcano action — make this sumptuous service fun and easy.
Time to perform service: 50 minutesSuggested pricing: $45 per serviceMenu description: Relax and rejuvenate with the Volcano Spa Pedicure. Detoxifying volcano crystals create a fragrant explosion of bubbles that will invigorate your senses. Next, an exfoliating sugar scrub will polish and smooth your skin. A collagen cream mask with a soothing warm towel wrap will lock in moisture. As a final touch, enjoy a relaxing massage with collagen lotion to conclude this hydrating treatment. How to introduce it: Appeal to clients’ senses: Stack up Volcano Spa Pedicure boxes in an eye-catching display, let clients sample each scent and select their favorite, and talk up the service by describing — or demonstrating — the unique bubbling volcano action.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Have your client place her feet into a pedicure basin filled
with warm water and add a full packet of Detox Volcano
Crystals. Spread the volcano crystals evenly throughout.
2. Immediately add a full packet of Detox Volcano Activator
to begin the bubbling volcano eruption. To boost the
fragrance, you can turn on the water jets. Allow feet to soak
for approximately three minutes, then dry legs and feet with
a towel.
3. Apply a generous amount of Exfoliating Sugar Scrub and
massage gently to exfoliate the skin. Rinse the sugar scrub
and towel dry.
4. Apply the Collagen Cream Maske evenly over legs and feet,
then wrap a warm towel around both legs. Allow the mask to
dry for 10 minutes, then wipe off with the damp towel.
5. For silky soft results, massage Collagen Massage Lotion onto
legs and feet until it has been completely absorbed.

Rainbow Trout1. Apply a white base using gel-polish or hard gel
and cure.
2. Using hard gel or a deeply pigmented gel-polish,
apply a thin layer of white, neon green, and neon
pink vertically on one side of the nail. Do not cure.
3. Blend the three colors with a brush, moving from
one side to the other until you get the desired
blend, then cure.
4. Add different sized black dots over the green and
pink ombre. Cure and apply top coat.Kim Stoddard, Hotlines Beauty Supply, Roy, Utah

Denim & Floral1. Carefully dip just the tip of a gradient art
brush in white gel paint (Young Nails Mission
Control). Paint vertical lines down the nail.
(They don’t have to be perfect; it’s more of a
distressed look.) Cure. Paint horizontal lines
across the nail with a gradient art brush. Cure.
2. Paint the entire nail with a light coat of blue
gel. Make sure the white lines can still be seen
through the blue.
3. Use a darker shade of blue gel paint to add
dimension to the edges. Create creases by
painting the darker shade and then wiping it
away with a flat brush. With a gradient brush
and white gel paint, add a few patches of white
fray details. Cure.
4. Cover the entire nail with a foil gel (Gellico Foil
Gel) and cure for 20 seconds. Use a floral design
transfer foil and carefully press the flowers
where you’d like them. Use white gel paint
and a small liner brush to paint leaf details.
Cure. Top with a matte top coat (Kupa Gelfinity

BUS I N E S S
Teeth-whitening services have left salon owner Hannah
Sass smiling. “Teeth whitening was one of the best things
we could have brought into our spa. It’s very popular,”
says Sass, co-owner of Head to Toe Spa and Nail Bar
(www.headtotoespaandnailbar.com) in Saint Joseph,
Mich. “The whitener is easy for our clients to apply and
they love it for big events, like weddings.”
Clients are set up in a secluded area of the salon and a
staff member helps them to get a mouthguard in place.
“We explain how to apply the bleaching gel and after
they do that, we position the light so it’s pointing towards
their teeth,” she says. “They sit for 15 minutes, and then
they have the option to continue whitening in additional
15-minute increments. Single-sessions cost $99 and we
charge around $25 for each additional 15 minutes.” The
salon stores any leftover gel so the client can purchase
additional sessions later on without having to buy more.
It’s the fact that the client applies the product herself
that skirts any regulations about performing a dental
procedure. According to Smile Labs, the supplier Sass uses,
“the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved the use of
peroxide for over-the-counter use. Our customers perform
the teeth whitening (sometimes called teeth bleaching)
procedure on themselves ... We are there to guide them and
verbally assist them during the chairside procedure, but
we never touch their mouths or teeth, we never give dental
advice, and we never represent ourselves as dentists.” Sass
says the procedure is gentle on clients’ teeth and doesn’t
cause sensitivities.
Head to Toes’ teeth-whitening clients are offered
simultaneous add-on services, like reflexology and leg
or arm massage. “We also have clients who will get
their pedicures and manicures done during that time,”
she says. “The whole teeth whitening service goes with
our philosophy of thinking everyone deserves to feel
beautiful from the inside out.”

Offer Convenience With a “Bridal to Go” Program With four Illinois locations, Zano Salons
has a large guest base, but co-owner
Nick Provenzano didn’t feel the salon
was capturing as much bridal business
as it should. Two years ago, he began
monitoring the bridal inquiries and
learned that 95% of brides were looking
for the salon to travel to them.
After months of research, Zano
launched Bridal to Go. One team
member handles all bridal bookings,
coordinating staff and upselling
services before and after the
wedding day.
“We realized in our old model, staff
were taking bridesmaid’s appointments
at 8 a.m., and sometimes that would
require eight techs at a time because
each guest wanted to be in the salon
the least amount of time possible,”
Provenzano says. “Now, we can send
two to three stylists to the wedding
location, and it’s a lot more relaxed
and easier to adapt if someone is
running late.” (While Zano primarily
provides hair services, mobile nail
services would offer brides the same
convenience and flexibility.)
Zano charges a travel fee and auto
gratuity, all of which goes to the staff
members. Bridal to Go generated
$20,000 in sales in 2017 after an April
launch, and revenues have continued to
grow since then.

Social Media: Your New Best Recruiting Tool
BUSINESS
Maybe you’re looking
for fresh graduates
with a positive
attitude and a hunger for
learning. Maybe you’re searching
for techs with several years of
experience under their belt. In
either case, recruiting new staff
members is one of the most
daunting challenges nail salon
owners face. Whoever your ideal
candidate is, we often hear the
same refrain: Good nail techs are
extremely hard to find.
You don’t want to sink too low
in your expectations; otherwise
there will be constant drama,
unhappy customers, and within
six months you’ll be looking for
someone new. But it can also be
challenging to find highly skilled
employees who aren’t already
happily employed elsewhere.
In most fields, using word of
mouth or traditional job posting
sites would be enough. But faced
with a small pool of qualified
candidates, many salon owners
are branching out with their
searches and they’ve found that
one of the best ways to attract top
talent is through social media: on
Instagram and Facebook.
USE FACEBOOK ADS TO TARGET POTENTIAL EMPLOYEESThere are some unique challenges to marketing your nail salon in a small town,
and hiring new employees is one of them. When nail salons don’t have a large
pool of people to hire from, they often have to come up with creative solutions.
Heather Lewis of Heather’s Nail Boutique in Sandpoint, Idaho, has turned
to boosted Facebook posts to attract local nail techs. “I must say that it is still
incredibly difficult to find employees, especially in a small town,” says Lewis.
“But I have had some luck with Facebook advertising.”
Facebook advertising does allow you to promote a job opening, but Lewis
didn’t have much luck with that: “I tried the Facebook Jobs feature and that
didn’t seem to work well,” she explains.
“I did best with just stating in my ad that they had to email me to apply. In
the last year I have hired two people through Facebook ads. It doesn’t sound
like much, but it’s a record for me in a small town!”
Facebook advertising for nail salons can be as simple as posting a beautiful
nail shot, like Lewis did, writing up a friendly description asking for help, and
“boosting” it so it gets seen by the right people on Facebook. But who are the right
people to target with an ad like this?
“I found that when I try to target certain groups, such as an interest in nails
or beauty, that I don’t have any audience,” says Lewis. “I also don’t want to
expand the area too much because realistically no one is going to drive more
than 40 miles to get here. Employees who have thought they were willing to
make the commute usually decide they’re done by mid-winter.
Instead, I usually use an audience of 18- to 65-year-olds and I usually target
women. I also limit the range to about 25 miles.”
Lewis also suggests turning to clients to get the word out: “Your clients can
be helpful. Ask them to share your post with their friends,” she says. “I even
thought of holding a drawing and to qualify they had to share my job post.”
Heather Lewis first tried a Facebook Jobs posting, but found she had
better luck with an ad that invited applicants to email her directly.
With more vacancies to fill than nail techs to fill them, salon owners have to think creatively to fill openings. Some have turned to Instagram and Facebook to attract top talent — and found success.

FIND NAIL TECHS IN LOCAL FACEBOOK GROUPS If you’ve ever visited a local Facebook group, you’ve seen that they’re often full of small businesses advertising
their services. Courtney Crosbie is a booth renter at Tan-tastic salon in Calne, England. The owner of Tan-tastic
found her because she was posting her nail services in a Facebook group.
“The salon that hired me saw an advert of mine on a local Facebook group and offered me a job,” explains Crosbie,
whose post stated that she would be returning to the area soon and invited everyone to check out her work. “I think
it was to prevent me stealing their clients. Clever, because it worked!”
The salon owner was impressed with Crosbie’s work and sent her a message asking if she might be interested in
joining the team. “I was thrilled to be given such an opportunity!” Crosbie says.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to scout new hires without spending lots of time, it might be worth
scrolling through a few local Facebook groups. “I think this is a great way to find new salon employees,” says
Crosbie. “Offer the local mobile or home-based techs a spot in your salon, then they aren’t competitors anymore!”

POST JOB OPENINGS ON INSTAGRAM STORIESIf your nail salon is constantly looking for your
next great employee, why not have a permanent
job posting on your social media? It can be
as simple as creating an Instagram “Stories
Highlight” that stays at the top of your profile.
This is exactly what Eunice Montes
Hamaguchi, owner of BellaBar Beauty
in Orange County, Calif., does to find new
employees. “I have a consistent ‘Now Hiring’
on my Instagram Story,” she says. “I’ve gotten a
few inquiries from it!”
All it takes to implement this easy job posting
is some basic graphic design (you can do it with

SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT HIRE THROUGH HASHTAGSIf nail techs aren’t coming to you, why not go searching
for them? One of the best ways to uncover new and
exciting nail techs is through Instagram. They’re on this
platform daily, showing off their work. By looking at their
profiles, their photos, and their descriptions, you can get
a good idea of both their skill level and their personality.
A great way of finding these profiles is through
Instagram hashtags. Do a bit of digging for local nail-
based hashtags and you may just come across some
gems. That’s how Brooke Creech found her job at Bella
Nail Bar in Dayton, Ohio.
“When I first started cosmetology school I knew I
wanted to specialize in nail art, so I started a nails-only
Instagram account to show my art,” says Creech. “I
posted every bit of work that I was proud of and always
tagged the location as Dayton, Ohio, so salons would
know it’s where I am. I also used the #DaytonNails
and #DaytonNailTech hashtags on every photo.” Two
weeks before graduation, a salon in the area with an
opening discovered her work by browsing through the
#DaytonNails results on Instagram and offered her an
interview. “I had a job the day I got my work permit
after graduation because I was so vigilant about using
social media to put myself out there!”
Creech is now an educator, and she gives the same
advice to nail salons about how to find new employees
through social media. “Now when I travel to other
schools, I make sure to tell that story to new nail techs so
they can do the same in whatever city they want to work
in. The salon I currently work in is hiring and I’ve been
helping with finding prospects in the area by searching
the same tags that helped my first salon find me.” N
Local nail hashtags are a good way for salon owners to
find area nail techs who might be seeking a change.

May Is Skin Cancer Awareness MonthBeauty professionals have a unique opportunity to
view their clients’ skin and nails up-close and note
changes that may be early signs of skin cancer. You
also have your client’s ear when it comes to health
and beauty advice — and the number-one tip for
maintaining young-looking skin and reducing the
risk of skin cancer is to avoid the sun’s damaging
ultraviolet rays.
Share these tips from the American Academy
of Dermatology on limiting sun exposure.
• Remember that the sun’s rays are strongest
between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is
shorter than you are, seek shade.
• Wear protective clothing, such as a lightweight
long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat,
and sunglasses, when possible.
• Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-
resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
(Broad-spectrum sunscreen provides protection
from both UVA and UVB rays.)
• Apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed
skin; most adults need about one ounce — or
enough to fill a shot glass — to fully cover their
body. And don’t forget to apply to the tops of the
feet, neck, and ears.
• Use sunscreen whenever you are going to be
outside, even on cloudy days.
• When outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two
hours, or after swimming or sweating.
• Use extra caution near water, snow and sand, as
they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which
can increase your chance of sunburn.
• Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from
tanning beds can cause skin cancer and
premature skin aging.
• Perform regular skin self-exams to detect skin
cancer early, when it’s most treatable, and see
a dermatologist if you notice new or suspicious
spots on your skin, or anything changing,
itching, or bleeding.
HEA LTH
The ABCDEs of MelanomaUrge clients to consult a dermatologist immediately if
you notice any moles or pigmented spots that exhibit
these signs:
A = Asymmetry. One half is unlike the other half.
B = Border. An irregular, scalloped, or poorly
defined border.
C = Color. Color is varied from one area to another;
has shades of tan, brown, or black, or is sometimes
white, red, or blue.
D = Diameter. Melanomas are usually greater than
6 mm (the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed,
but they can be smaller.
E = Evolving. A mole or skin lesion that looks different
from the rest or is changing in size, shape, or color.
It is this obvious.
Unlike most cancers, skin cancer is easy
to SPOT. Detect skin cancer early by
examining your skin regularly. If you
have a spot that is changing, growing,
itching or bleeding, or a new mole,
make an appointment to see a
dermatologist. Find a
free skin cancer screening
in your area, get involved
in the movement, and
find more information at

Essie’s new ridge-filling base coat, Smooth-e, combats more than just
ridges. Essie global lead educator Rita Remark outlines several of its uses.
• Nail discoloration. Discoloration can be due to natural yellowing or
whitening of the nail or surface stains from food or nail polish. Smooth-e
comes in a tinted, creamy formula that works to conceal discoloration
and other imperfections.
• Dryness or flaking. As we age, the nails retain less moisture, which
can lead to dryness. Smooth-e combats dryness with ceramide, which
hydrates and prevents moisture loss. Similarly, it protects dry, flaking
nails, especially during cold, dry winter months.
• Ridging. Another sign of age is ridging. Smooth-e works to smooth
ridges, and for clients with extremely deep ridges, gaps, or dents,
Gel-Setter top coat can be used as well. Its slightly thicker consistency
glosses over uneven nails, producing a glass-like surface.

HEALTH | healthy tech Q & A
Healthy Tech:
Melissa SchumannFor Portland, Ore.-based nail tech Melissa Schumann, horseback riding provides stress relief — which helped her get through cancer treatment.
Are you a healthy nail tech?
We want to hear your success stories. Email
[email protected] to find out how
you can be featured in our Healthy Tech column.
Tell us a little about yourself and your career.
I got my nail technology license in 1998, fresh out of high school.
I struggled over the years to make working in the salon my only
job. I went back to school in 2011 to get my bachelor’s degree in
criminal justice. At that time, I left my 9-to-5 job and went back
into the salon, since it allowed me to have the flexibility to go
to school full time. I graduated in 2014 and decided to continue
moving forward with my nail career. In July 2015 I was accepted
into an educator training that was put on by Hand and Nail
Harmony. I love being an educator.
In November 2016 I was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer.
I had major surgery and six rounds of chemotherapy. I had
treatment every three weeks — I’d work for two weeks and take
one week off. It was a really tough eight months. In April 2019 I
will be two years post-chemo and I’m currently cancer-free.
How did you first get into horseback riding?
My parents got me horseback riding lessons when I was in fifth
grade as a Christmas present. I was instantly hooked! I took a
variety of lesson styles until I was a sophomore in high school. I
got back into horses when I was about 25.
How do you make time for horseback riding?
I work four days a week. On at least two of my days off, I’m either
out riding or at the barn. During the summer, I will take a few
Saturdays off so I can go horse camping with friends.
How does horseback riding help your health?
Spending time at the barn or out riding brings me into the
moment. I become completely focused on what is happening
directly in front of me, which allows me to forget about the
outside world for a bit. It can be very dangerous to be distracted,
especially while out riding. During chemo, spending time with
my horse was the only place I could go and not feel like a cancer
patient. Even now, I use that time to clear my mind, especially
when I’m struggling with stress.
Do you have any advice for nail techs going through a
difficult health situation?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Be very clear and honest with
your clients; you might be surprised how accommodating they’ll
be. Also, find your happy place. Whether it’s the barn, ocean,
mountains, the gym, etc., it will help you get through anything
and everything. آموزشگاه آرایشگری دترلند

Claim Your Specialty:
We polled women ages 18-59 to find out what foot conditions gave them the most aggravation. Read their answers to learn how you can position yourself as a solution to these common foot frustrations.BY MICHELLE PRATT
ISTOCK.COM/ARTISTEER
If you’re a tech looking to grow your business,
you need a USP: a “unique selling point.” That’s
a fancy way of saying you need to differentiate
yourself and your services from other techs and
salons so you can stop competing on price.
Competing on price is a race to the bottom.
It’s a hard way to pay the bills and an easy way
to get burned out.
Differentiating yourself with your USP can be
simple. In fact, it’s usually the simple things that
“stick” so someone remembers. Maybe you’re the
tech known for natural nail care, your medi-
tech certification, or trending nail art. Maybe
you differentiate yourself by offering the most
natural-looking acrylic nails in a five-block radius.
Whatever your magic, it’s easier to build a loyal
clientele when you have something you can claim
as your specialty.
One way to do this is by positioning yourself
as the educated tech.
Remember, from the clients’ perspective,
all techs know how to make nails pretty. But
you can give them what they want and need
when it comes to their feet; these survey results
are your fly-on-the-wall opportunity to hear
a client wish list! From there, you can tailor
services and recommend home-care products
based on targeted needs.

EDUCATE
Bunions are different from corns and
calluses in that they may be caused
from a misalignment in your bones
or abnormal foot structure. While
corns and calluses could be caused by
a structural problem, most often the
problem doesn’t run that deep, which
means you can help.
Talk with clients about how their
footwear can cause friction and pressure
points that lead to calluses and corns.
This isn’t limited to heels, but could also
be caused by a shoe that’s too small or too
narrow. While shoes aren’t likely to be the
cause of bunions, they certainly increase
bunion pain if they don’t fit correctly.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Soak the foot in warm
water to soothe the pain from
the bunion and to soften the skin
surrounding the corn and calluses.
Abrade the skin of the corn and callus
within the limits of your state’s license.
Provide bunion pain relief with a foot
massage that focuses on the toes and
arch of the foot.
At home: Emphasize the importance
of shoes that fit properly and avoid
rubbing and pressure. Suggest a daily
foot soak, along with cream from your
retail shelf that softens the skin of corns
and calluses and that works well as an
at-home massage to soothe bunion pain.
As a resource: Help a client understand
the likelihood of these conditions
worsening without proper footwear and
pedi care. Schedule regular pedicure
appointments to manage corns and
calluses. And recommend clients see a
doctor if they have chronic bunion pain.
EDUCATE
Because techs are restricted
from performing any service
when signs of infection are
visible, such as heat, swelling,
tenderness, etc., some believe
even identifying an ingrown
nail exceeds a tech’s scope of
practice. However, it’s clear
that techs can often prevent an
ingrown nail from developing
into an issue in the first place.
It can take a long time for
an ingrown nail to become a
problem. As you’re performing
her pedicure, talk with your
client about the proper way to
file toenails.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Properly clean and
shape the nail to remove any
sharp points that are prone to
dig into the skin. Clean along the
sidewalls of the nail, removing
dirt and debris. This often
removes the pressure clients
can feel when a nail is at risk of
becoming ingrown.
At home: Recommend clients
wear shoes that fit properly with
a wide toe bed. Also suggest
they clean under the nail after a
shower, making sure debris isn’t
trapped and that the nail isn’t
lodged in the skin.
As a resource: When a client
presents you with broken skin
or an infection, refer her to a
doctor.
24.5% 12.9%say they’ve suffered from
DRY, CRACKED SKIN OR HEELS.
say they’ve suffered from
INGROWN TOENAILS.
16.1%say they’ve suffered from
BUNIONS/CORNS/CALLUS.
EDUCATE
While it’s possible that dry,
cracked skin is from a deeper
problem, such as a fungal
infection, eczema, or psoriasis,
many times it’s a simple issue of
neglect.
Foot care is a year-round job.
Winter is brutal on our skin as
the cold, dry air causes it to crack,
while heavy socks and shoes make
feet sweat. In summer months
(and in warm climates), feet
are more exposed from sandals
and flip flops, which can cause
the skin to become callused and
cracked. Help clients understand
the importance of keeping feet
clean, dry, and moisturized.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Offer masks, peels,
and soaks that will soften skin,
then file, slough, and abrade to
remove dry, dead skin.
At home: Recommend
professional products from your
retail shelf for daily use according
to the severity of the condition.
As a resource: Recommend a
podiatrist or a dermatologist if you
suspect a skin problem or if you
notice signs of infection.

EDUCATE
Arthritis is an inflammation
in the joints. It may be a result
of wear and tear or it could be
an autoimmune disease. In our
aging population, you’ll have
more opportunities to tailor
services to this clientele. Help
clients view you as a resource by
recommending your own retail
items as a way to find relief.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Offer clients
soothing treatments, such as
paraffin dips, warm heat wraps,
etc. Create mani and pedi
services specifically focused on
arthritic care, which includes
a gentle massage that targets
swollen joints.
At home: Recommend retail
items you sell for at-home use,
such as a cream that contains
CBD, arnica, menthol, or another
natural anti-inflammatory.
As a resource: Schedule regular
pedicure appointments that not
only provide soothing relief, but
also ensure regular maintenance
of the skin and nails.
EDUCATE
Plantar fasciitis develops for a
number of reasons, but the result
is the same: the fascia band has
stretched and torn. If you suspect
a client has plantar fasciitis, refer
her to a doctor. She’s likely looking
at months of treatment, which
could mean orthotics, a brace,
therapy, or medication.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Contact a doctor or
a physical therapist to learn the
best way to massage or stretch a
client with plantar fasciitis. This
specialized knowledge could help
you become known as the “go-to”
tech for athletes and could expand
your referral relationships with
podiatrists or therapists.
At home: Clients may benefit
from applying ice or an anti-
inflammatory cream at home, but
this doesn’t replace a diagnosis
and treatment from a doctor.
As a resource: Use the
relationships you’ve established
with podiatrists and therapists to
build a group of doctors you can
recommend to clients.
8.4% 7.7% 7.1%say they’ve suffered from
ARTHRITIS.
say they’ve suffered from
SWEATY FEET.
say they’ve suffered from
PLANTAR FASCIITIS.
EDUCATE
While all of us sweat as a response
to nerves, exertion, or heat, someone
who suffers from excessive sweating
could have a condition known as
“hyperhidrosis.” According to the
International Hyperhidrosis Society,
treatments include antiperspirants,
iontophoresis (a type of electrical
stimulation), and Botox injections.
Botox paralyzes the nerve to stop it
from sweating. An antiperspirant
lotion called Carpe is formulated
specifically for excessive sweating of
the hands and feet — giving techs a
retail solution to offer clients.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Explore the possibility
of offering a pedicure (and
manicure!) specifically for people
who suffer from hyperhidrosis. The
service could include a finishing
step where an antiperspirant cream
is applied to curb sweating.
At home: Research which products
you are able to sell clients to
use daily, which will increase
their confidence and reduce
the discomfort caused from
hyperhidrosis.
As a resource: Consult with
dermatologists and podiatrists
to let them know about your
hyperhidrosis services and inquire
about a referral relationship that
more holistically serves clients.

If the area surrounding the missing
or torn toenail is an open wound
or is infected, refer the client to
a doctor. If not, inquire about the
cause to learn if it’s an emotional or
esthetic concern to your client.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: If the toenail is torn,
trim and file it to remove rough
edges and to help guide its growth.
Schedule regular pedicures so
you can check the progress and
prevent an ingrown toenail from
developing. If the nail is actually
gone, products are available
that allow a tech to apply a nail
enhancement to the area where
the natural nail would be. If you
are fully trained on the use and
application of these products, this
is a fantastic way to differentiate
yourself.
At home: A client may benefit from
purchasing a buffer or file in case
the torn nail splits or tears before
she makes it back into the salon.
If you’ve applied an enhancement,
stress the importance of regular
appointments to ensure dirt, water,
and debris don’t get trapped under
the nail.
As a resource: Become known to
dermatologists and podiatrists as
the salon or tech of choice for this
type of problem nail. Once they’ve
given their patients a medical
release, they can recommend you
to make the nail beautiful again.
EDUCATE
Smelly feet could be the result of
many different problems. It may
be caused by athlete’s foot or a
skin condition. Or it could be
just a good, old-fashioned case of
bacteria from sweat.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: Soak the foot and
clean out all the debris from
under the nails. This should solve
the immediate problem, but help
clients see long-term results
by explaining the importance
of keeping the foot clean and
dry. And warn them that socks
and shoes made with synthetic
material could contribute to
smell.
At home: Over-the-counter talc
powder and foot sprays can cut
down on foot odor. Stress the
importance of wearing natural
fabrics and alternating footwear
in order to give the shoe time to
dry out.
As a resource: If a client
complains of foot odor over a
series of appointments, the issue
may be excessive sweating (see
page 44) and the client may
benefit from a visit to the doctor.
EDUCATE
Unfortunately, fungal infections
in the foot are common. As a tech,
you put yourself and your clients
at risk if you perform a pedicure
on a client with a fungal infection.
Your number-one priority when you
suspect a fungal infection is to refer
the client to a doctor.
DIFFERENTIATE
In the salon: The best way to
differentiate yourself in the way you
handle fungal infections is to alert
the client to the seriousness of the
problem. Take a firm stand to stop
“business as usual.” Remove any
enhancements on nails you suspect
have fungus. Let the client know the
nail has to be healthy before you’re
able to provide pedi services again.
At home: Stress the importance of
keeping the feet and nails clean and
dry. Make sure no dirt, water, or
debris is trapped under the free edge
or on the skin surrounding the nail.
As a resource: Consult with a doctor
or a dermatologist to see how you
can assist them in their treatment
plan. Establish trust with a medical
professional who can refer his or her
patients to you once they’ve treated
the fungus. N

MY OTHER LIFE
The Sky’s the LimitFor Shea McCarthy of Layton, Utah, aviation is
a longtime passion that even inspired the name
of her home salon: Sky’s the Limit Nails. During
the winter, she combines her love for airliners
with her nail career, working as a lead de-icer for
Integrated Deicing Services (IDS) at Salt Lake
City International Airport. Before her de-icing
job, McCarthy worked at the airport for 12 years,
starting out as a line service technician. “I was
responsible for servicing corporate and privately-
owned aircraft,” she explains. “This included
fueling, towing, parking, lavatory services, de-icing,
and several other services. I did that for a few years
before becoming a line supervisor, when I usually
assigned others those tasks and ran the ramp.”
After her second child was born, McCarthy
realized that her income wasn’t enough to afford
daycare for her children, so she left that job. A
friend referred her to IDS, which offers a flexible
and seasonal schedule that allows her to continue to
work in aviation without the need for daycare. The
job fits in around her nail career too: She works for
IDS on weekday nights and weekends and does nails
during the day and on days off.
McCarthy finds her job rewarding. “I love
knowing that I’m helping keep air travel safe
for everyone on the planes we spray, crew and
passengers alike,” she says. “Without de-icing,
aircraft can lose lift. This results in poor takeoff
performance, and perhaps the inability to stay
airborne.” She loves operating the de-icing
equipment, too. “Our trucks are capable of being
driven and operated from the sprayer’s basket,” she
says. “It’s an awesome feeling looking 40 feet below
and no one is in the cab of the truck because I’m
driving it from up in the air!”
