Regional Assembly in Albany ~ May 18-19, 2012

Come Meet Sharon Watkins at Regional Assembly Regional Assembly features three great services of worship focusing on the Lord’s Table – its meaning and power in our lives of faith.

On Friday, May 18, we will gather at the table and celebrate the diverse community that is drawn by Christ’s transforming love. The Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins will preach on how Jesus was known to the community in the breaking of the bread. On Saturday morning our Regional Pastors Doug & Cathy Myers Wirt will lead us in an exploration of our connections around the Lord’s Table and we will celebrate the many ways we are inspired and challenged to be the church together in these changing days.

The closing worship on Saturday afternoon will once again feature Dr. Watkins who will help us explore our unique call to be a move-ment for wholeness in a fragmented world. Be there to experience this powerful preaching, inspiring music and meaningful opportunities to gather at the Lord’s Table as the people of God.

Youth Sunday – May 6 Come for your regular service at the same time and same place for there will be something that you are used to and some things that are different. The youth have planned each service to fit you where you are.

Mother’s Day and Baby Parade – May 13 On Mother’s Day we want to celebrate mothers and babies. We will have our traditional Baby Parade and are inviting all babies, toddlers and their families to show off for our church. We hope you can participate in this fun tradition with your family. The congregation loves to see all the young families and their children!

Mother’s Day - II Timothy 1:1-7 The Apostle Paul was able to see in his mentoree, Timothy, qualities of faith he saw in his mother and grandmother. This scripture gives us the opportunity to see qualities we inherited from our mothers as well as qualities we will leave as a heritage to those our life touches.

“STEPPING INTO Style” Women’s Fashion Show and Luncheon on Saturday, May 12, at 12:00 pm for all women of the church. The ticket cost is $6 per person.

Tickets for the luncheon are available after all three services. Payment is due at time of reservation.

One Child Makes a Difference Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network Be like a child! Hanna Lott an 11 year old from West Salem wanted to make a difference and she did! For most children, it’s hard to match the excitement of a birthday, but Hanna had an idea. After watching a show about a young girl who collected shoes to send to Africa, Hanna decided to do something locally.

Hanna is familiar with Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network (SIHN) through her family. After some brainstorming she came up with an idea to help SIHN families with the burden they encounter paying for diapers for their children. Hanna made a decision to forgo birthday gifts for herself and have a diaper drive for SIHN.

Hanna contacted her elementary school’s student council, gathered friends, made signs about the diaper drive, posted signs in her neighborhood, school and her parents work. Hanna’s mom, Angie’s employer PH Tech matched employees donations for diapers. SIHN sponsored Hanna’s birthday party at the A. C. Gilbert Discovery Village. Hanna invited the entire 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from her school to the party, requesting donations for diapers, not gifts for herself.

We can learn a lot from Hanna and her giving-generous heart. We are here for a purpose. When we are faithful to God’s call we can make a difference.

Please help make a difference by sharing your time as a host for SIHN or making a donation for important SIHN needs. Just $10 can make a difference. Make a check to SIHN and put it in the Sunday offering. SIHN is in need of the following items:

• The budget for 2012 was accepted with an average $58,300 per month.

• We are currently spending an average of $62,088 per month.

• As you can calculate, the average receipts are $16,631 per month LESS than the expenses. The prior years reserve fund has been used.

• As of April 30, we have $25,000 of unpaid bills.

Spring is finally in the air! And with the new buds, we also have BABIES!!! Sunday, May 13, we want to celebrate MOTHERS AND BABIES. On Mother’s Day, we will have our traditional BABY PARADE . We are inviting all babies, toddlers and their families to show off for our church. We hope you can partici-pate in this fun tradition with your families. The congregation loves to see all the young families and their children!

We ask that you meet in the nursery at 10:45 am so Teri Garland can check you in, organize you and take you all to the side door of the sanctuary in order of ages~ oldest to youngest (the babies, of course!) Big brothers and sisters are welcome to be in the parade too! We will introduce each family, and then you get to parade down the center aisle as we take pictures and ooh and aaaah over your precious little ones.

Please let me know if you will or will not be able to participate by Thursday, May 10. (Church office: 503-363-9273) We hope to see you all there. AND THEN, a week later, on Sunday, May 20, we want to celebrate TEACHERS! Each department: children’s, youth, and adults; will praise their teach-ers in their own special way before then, but we will recognize ALL teachers on that Sunday. There will be a light luncheon after the 11:00 am service. Lunch will be a celebration of teachers and a farewell to Pastor Matt, before the Board meets. Calling all Kids of the Kingdom, children grades 1-5: We have been practicing with Christine and now will be performing with the chimes and singing our song for Mother's Day, May 13, at the beginning of the 11:00 am service. Flurries from Chris This past week I had an ongoing discussion around the purpose of prayer. It started with the question of why do we pray? Do we pray in order to rely on God for everything that we want? That original question went from being fairly broad to narrowing down to looking inward and asking what do we expect to happen when we pray?

On the one side there is the sense that it is more or less for the benefit of our mental self in that by pray-ing we cause our minds to make a shift. On the other side of the scale was the example of televangelists that pray for someone to be healed and if they have enough faith it will happen.

Through the discussions I had throughout the week we settled that prayer sits somewhere in-between but also requires us to take a closer look at our attitude of prayer. The first shift is an attitude of prayer where we come before God asking for something and some-times with thanksgiving, to an attitude of coming before God as one whom we are in relationship with. Do we only ask our friends for stuff and occasionally give thanks or do we sit in conversation with one another and pour ourselves out to one another? Why should our relationship with God be anything less than being able to pour ourselves out to God and also taking the time to listen for what God has to say?

The second shift is that as we look for answers and request healing, are we looking for our prayers to be answered in a specific way or are we leaving it open for a wondrous and powerful God who sees the big picture of our lives and sees the path before us. What happens if our prayers for someone to be healed don’t happen the way we want them to? Does that person not have enough faith, or did we try to limit God in how God heals individuals.

So as we sit down to pray this week, I encourage you to sit with God as you sit with an old friend and pour yourselves out to one another.

Check It Out! Featured today, an oldie but goodie, “Tramp for the Lord” by Corrie Ten Boom. Recently, Claire Widener beautifully read Chapter 31 from this book at Intercessory Prayer Night. I could hardly wait to find the book in our church Library and read more.

In her work of tramping around the world for the Lord, Corrie was filled with the Holy Spirit and it pours out from the pages in marvelous and touching ways. If you haven’t read this book, please Check It Out. If you read it years ago, you may want to read it again.

You will find “Tramp for the Lord” by Corrie Ten Boom displayed on the front counter of your church Library.

Want to be trained as a Ministries and Mission Interpreter? We have a great opportunity on Thursday, May 17, for training in Oregon.

What is a Ministries and Mission Interpreter? A person who has a passion for mission, loves to tell of God’s Mission, motivates, trains others, and builds and participates in the National Ministries and Mis-sion network.

The training is on Thursday May 17, from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm at Lynchwood Christian Church (3815 SE 174th St., Portland, Oregon 97236)

The cost is $7 for the conference, morning snack and lunch.

AMPT’s June Fundraiser Please put Sunday, June 3, on your calendars as it is a day you do not want to miss! AMPT (the A.M. Praise Team) will provide for all services an opportu-nity to help fund raise to complete needed items for the church's sound system.
