The following is an excerpt from the book “Gedulat Yehoshua”.

One year, a famous millionaire paid ten thousand “Zehubim”, an astronomical amount of money, for the right to kindle the fire on Lag Ba’omer in Meron at the tzion of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Once the fire was kindled, the crowds quickly burst into a frenzy of dancing and singing, and in their great fervor, failed to realize that the wild jostling could pose a danger.

Unfortunately, a tragedy occurred. The millionaire, who had been standing on the roof, was inadvertently pushed to the edge, where he fell to the courtyard below, breaking both legs. His fall, however, went unnoticed by the crowds above, who were completely immersed in the celebrations. He lay there, writhing in pain, until eventually, someone walking through the courtyard heard his pleas for assistance. The injured man was lifted, placed gently in one of the adjacent rooms, and then his savior went to call a doctor.

In those times, however, there was not a single doctor to be found in the vicinity of Meron, and the only option was to travel by

horse and cart to the neighboring village. This was a roundtrip journey of several hours, and when the man and the doctor finally returned to Meron, it was already well past midnight.

Upon entering the room, the two were startled to find it totally empty. The doctor and his companion anxiously began searching for the patient, the “man with the broken legs,” only to find him, to their utter amazement, dancing enthusiastically amongst the crowds. Pulling him over to the side, they demanded to know what had transpired, and why exactly he was standing on his own two feet.

“I was lying on the floor, unable to move”, the millionaire related. “Suddenly the holy Tanna, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, appeared, and said: ‘Great happiness came about through you today, in my honor. Therefore it is my obligation to make you happy and to heal you.’ He then placed his holy hands on my broken legs. I was immediately and completely cured. Within minutes, I was on my feet again, joining the crowds dancing in honor of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.”

Ingredients1/4 cup canola oil1/3 cup honey1/3 cup soy sauce1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 1 inch cubes2 cloves garlic5 small onions, cut into 2 inch pieces2 red bell peppers, cut into 2 inch piecesSkewers

Directions1. In a large bowl, whisk together oil, honey, soy sauce, and pepper. Before adding chicken, reserve a small amount of marinade to brush onto kabobs while cooking. Place the chicken, garlic, onions and peppers in the bowl, and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours (the longer the better).

2.Preheat the grill for high heat.

3. Drain marinade from the chicken and vegetables, and discard marinade. Thread chicken and vegetables alternately onto the skewers.

4. Lightly oil the grill grate. Place the skewers on the grill. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until chicken juices run clear. Turn and brush with reserved marinade frequently.
