The Moderating Effects of Risk Culture on the Relationship BetweenSustainability Risk Management (Srm) and Company Survival

1*Dr Norlida Abdul Manab, 2 Nazliatul Aniza Abdul Aziz1,2Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia

Keywords: Risk, Risk Culture, Sustainability Risk Management (SRM), Company Survival.

Sustainability risk management (SRM) provides a medium of precaution in an organisation, and opportuni-ties for accelerating business growth and company survival. As global risks and disasters brought terrible situationsand tremendous losses to businesses, risk culture is one of the most significant challenges faced by nearly every com-pany from diverse industries in implementing risk management programmes. Having sound risk culture is vital tosuccessful SRM implementation, as it influences the way an organisation makes sense of risks and hazards. SRMrequires organisational culture to change from independence, and closed culture to dependence and openness culture, however, the critical role of risk culture seems to have been disregarded. Thus, the aim of this study is to examinethe moderating role of risk culture on the relationships between sustainability risk management (SRM) and companysurvival amongst the environmentally listed companies (PLCs) in Malaysia. A total of 53 questionnaires were suc-cessfully collected and the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique was utilized toperform the statistical analysis of the data survey. The result shows that risk culture moderates the relationship be-tween the role of leadership and risk resilience of SRM implementation and company survival. The involvement of topmanagement and risk resilience depends on good relationships and participation from all staff across the organisationfor a success of SRM implementation to achieve long-term company survival.

The Impact of Index Futures on Market Efficiency and Volatility of SpotIndex: An Empirical Evidence from Emerging Economies (BRICS)

Keywords: Efficiency, Economies, Increment

The issues regarding regulation and the effect of index futures on underlying spot market are under debatein developing and developed countries. This study investigates the role of parallel index futures on stability aspects ofunderlying spot market in emerging economies. Specifically, this study investigates the impact parallel index futureson the underlying spot markets volatility and market efficiency in emerging countries (BRICS) using data of spotindexes: (Brazil (IBrX-50), Russia (RTSI), India (Nifty), China (CSI300) and South Africa (JSE 40)). The equal preand post period with the introduction of index carefully is used for analysis. An AR (1) augmented GJR-GARCHapproach with GED is used to estimate the level of market efficiency and volatility in underlying stock market. Theresults show significant volatility in underlying stock market after the introduction of index futures in spot market. On the other hand, the study presents the significant increment in market efficiency of all stocks of BRICS exceptNifty stock of India. These results suggest that the relationship exists between market efficiency and volatility, whichimplies that markets will have to bear cost (in terms of increase in volatility) for potential gains (increase in level ofmarket efficiency).

Solar Ponds for Industrial Heating for Process Salt Drying1*Mohammed Bawahab, 2Hosam Faqeha

Keywords: Solar Pond, Salinity Gradient Solar Pond, Heat Pump, Heat Generation

At present, Pyramid Salts, a salt producing company located in north of Victoria, Australia. It is approxi-mately 200 km north of Melbourne on the Pyramid Hill. Pyramid Salt Pty Ltd uses electric heaters to heat ambient airfrom around 20C to 70C in their salt crystallizers for salt drying. This paper aims to develop a solar PV driven heatpump coupled with salinity gradient solar pond to supply necessary hot air. A solar pond with 3000 square meters, andthree meters deep in Pyramid Hill indicates that heat will be available at the bottom of the pond between 35C to 50Cduring the year (winter to summer). Further through this research a high temperature heat pump system coupled withthe solar pond. This will increase the temperature of the available heat and produce hot air 60-70C and above for 24/7all year around. The amount of electrical energy saving in this project has been estimated to be about 1GWh per year.
