COVER FEATURE

The Role of Palliative Care in Medicine • Millions of people with serious illnesses live with symptoms, whether physical, emotional or social, that seriously impact the quality of their lives. In some cases, they are senior patients with terminal diseases. In other cases, they may be small children with genetic anomalies. Whether their problems stem from the condi-tion itself or side effects of its treatment, palliative care specialists are trained to help patients find the tranquility to live life on their terms.

Finding Tranquility

The cover image is from a watercolor painting by retired physician, Charles Monson, MD of Parkston, South Dakota. Dr. Monson’s whimsical paintings decorate many homes and offices in that region. The sales of most of these paintings went toward a scholarship fund established in the name of his late wife, Kay. The image “Lilies and Lark” won top honors at the South Dakota State Fair in 2001.

A letter from the VP and Editor

Alex Strauss

Steffanie Liston-Holtrop

WE ARE EXCITED TO BE BRINGING YOU ANOTHER YEAR OF MED, the region’s premier source for timely, local, relevant health news to benefit you and your practice. We handpick each feature

article and contributed column with a view toward how it might serve you, the South Dakota healthcare provider. We welcome your feedback on our choices.

Our thanks go out to the deeply compassionate physicians and nurses from around the region who helped us better under-stand the complex issue of palliative medicine for this month’s cover feature. Also in this issue, you’ll find features on a pair of father/daughter doctors in Yankton, an exciting new collaboration between local hospitals and the South Dakota Symphony, the case for revamping your practice logo, and, of course all of the region’s current news and upcoming CME courses.

As always, we welcome your book reviews and reminiscences as well as your letters and comments on issues you see in these pages or elsewhere. We continue to look for physicians willing to speak with us about their unique hobby or artistic pursuit. Contact us any time at [email protected]. Let us know what you’re up to and we’ll do the rest.

Best wishes to you and yours for a healthy, happy and a pros-perous new year. Thank you for making MED a part of it. —Alex & Steff

A talk with MED AdvisorLuis A. Rojas, MD

Q: You came from the Dominican Republic. How did you end up in Sioux Falls?

When I completed my training in gynecologic oncology at Cleveland Clinic, the government required me to work in an underserved area. That policy is fine in principal, but it can be very difficult for people in highly specialized fields like mine to find an underserved area with the need and volumes for their services. Of the places I interviewed, Sioux Falls was by far the best.

Q: The requirement is 3 years and you have been here more than four. Have you decided to stay?

Absolutely. This is home for us. My wife and my three boys and I love it here. For us to move now, they would have to deport us! And I am kept very busy as one of only two Gynecological Oncologists in town.

Q: What are you most excited about professionally?

Connecting with places like Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University for research. We are also working on several new clinical trials. We are studying the impact of obesity on endometrial cancer. We are also going to conduct microarray studies on cancer cells which will give us important genetic information that may impact on how we administer chemotherapy in the future. We are on the verge of some break-through research that is going to put Avera on the map.

Q: You came here from a large center. Does being in Sioux Falls hold you back at all?

Not at all. There is a great deal of freedom and opportunity here. Honestly, the only thing that holds us back here is the hospital politics that prevent our being able to have the advantages of a residency program. We could have a great residency program if the hospitals could agree to do it.
