Welcome to the Mini Classic Rally powered by Safaricom 4G+, a tribute rally in the honor of JS Vohra. This year as part of the rally we’re tackling new routes with a brand new team. A new perspective is always important and this is the outlook we’re going for with this rally. Day one of the rally tackles Kajiado, day two will be in Nakuru, while day three takes on Baringo before returning to Nakuru. All roads have been graded, and on this note we would like to thank the county government of Nakuru and Baringo for the wonderful hospitality and support. Also a massive thank you to our sponsors - title sponsor Safaricom, without whom we would not have the powered up 4G+. And Copycat, USN and Waterfront Mall. Waterfront Mall was approached last minute and we are pleased to have them on board as host and co-sponsor for the event. The venue will serve as the base for rally control, scrutineering and the drivers’ briefing on Day 1.

By Abdul Sidi The Safaricom-sponsored Classic Rally has attracted twenty-two entries for the event set to kick off this weekend from the Waterfront Karen in Nairobi. Finland-based Tapio Laukkanen is one of the four foreign entries that include crews from Tanzanian (one), Oman (one) and England (one). When asked what was his plan for his first ever Classic Rally, Luakkanen had this to say when while chatting from the Finnish capital. “Firstly I am excited and looking forward to the three-day event. Gavin Laurence will navigate me in a Porsche 911,” said Laukkanen while talking to Nation SportsDesk from Finland. Laukkanen added: “I actually don't know what to expect though my main goal is to test the car for future events as so result doesn't give me any pressure. I've done testing few years ago in a Porsche.” Twice winner of the 10-day East African Safari Classic Rally, Ian Duncan will also take part in his Ford Capri with Anthony Nielson as his navigator. The event will start on the 9th December at 8am from theWaterfront Karen in Nairobi in the memory of JS Vohra, who sadly died in a car accident while out watching the East African Safari Classic Rally last year. Vohra was one of the Directors of the event at the time of his death. Day Two action will start from the Waterfront Karen and finish at Sarova Woodlands Hotel, Nakuru. The final daywill Start and Finish at the Sarova Woodlands Hotel, Nakuru. Also taking part are former Safari Rally winners Baldev Chager/Ravi Soni (Porsche 91), defending Nakuru Classy Rally winners Raaji Bharij/Rajay Sehmi (Porsche 911) and the Khan family led by Aslam, Arshard, Farhaaz and Samira in various capacities as drivers and navigators respectively. SUNDAY 9TH DECEMBER, 2018 CS 1 - CORNER BARIDI - KAJIADO - 44 KM Crews will begin the rally on a stage synonymous with the older version of the safari rally. The entire route has been graded, so expect some very fast times being set. For spectators it is advisable to watch nearer the Kajiado end control. alternate spectator point is accessible via the kiserian to isinya road, using the access road to Champagne park, where there will be a entertainment area being setup with food and beverages. First car in to this stage is 08:18 hrs expect first car in kajiado at 08:58 hrs CS 2 - KIKURRO - BULLSEYE - 48 km Crews will need to be careful on this stage as it is very twisty and narrow to begin, with many dry mud holes. Approximately14km in to this stage, they will then join and extremely smooth section with fast brows and flowing corners. Roughly half way into the stage, terrain changes to black cotton soil, and if it rains, may prove a challenge and could change the leader board. Organisers will position mud cars to assist if required. The stage finishes again on fast flowing roads towards Bulls eye Not a spectator friendly stage, and not recommended to try and go in. C2 3 - KAJIADO 2 - CORNER BARIDI 2 - 44KM reverse of CS1, so spectators will get to see the crews twice. MONDAY 10TH DECEMBER, 2018 CS 4 - OLETEPESI - RAILWAY 69 KM another of the old safari rally routes being revisited again. County government has been grading the roads, so for the first 30km, expect fast and flowing tracks, with blind jumps over new culverts. If you intend to spectate in this stage, please ensure you are in the stage well before the first car is due, which is 08:10 hrs Once the crews reach Najile town, the terrain becomes more challenging over the rough and rocky road to suswa, thereafter they will use a smaller track and continue to the finish near the satellite station along the Narok Road. Crucial navigation over the last 10km CS 5 - NAIRENGAIRE - IL DAMAT - 51KM a very old safari rally stage, probably not been used since 2005. Very twisty uphill tracks for the first 30km, and if it rains will be slippery and a challenge. However currently the surface is dry so expect dry mud holes and ruts. After 30km, the track opens up and becomes smooth as you traverse through wheat farms, with some breathtaking views. very fast descend to the finish. CS 6 - SEYABEI - BRIDGE - 87KM Another technical stage with fast and narrow roads to begin with and continue to climb to up to 3,000 metres above sea level to a town called Sangale. The next 10 km is very narrow twisty tracks down into valleys and up the other side, until 40km (half way point). From here the crews will use a 50km of an extremely fast road, which has been recently graded, synonymous to a stage in rally of Finland. Definitely a stage where the Porsche’s will flex their muscles and peak speeds of 200kph.
ROUTE BY RAJU CHAGGER
LoremIpsum 5
TUESDAY 11TH DECEMBER, 2018 CS7 - SOLAI 1 - MOGOTIO - 40KM The crews entire the final day and experience hot and humid conditions while traversing rocky terrains. This stage as well has been graded and is a very fast and flowing stage the entire route. from approximately 19km, they begin descending over very tight and twisty escarpment, with loose gravel and continue to Mogotio over very wide roads and very fast. crews that are awake will set good times on this stage. for spectator viewing, highly recommend going into the stage from Mogotio town, with plenty of good spots to watch. expect first car at Mogotio at 09:23 hours. CS 8 - LOBOI - LORUK - 112KM A rally is not complete until you have a marathon stage, set in harsh country. This stage has it all, and will definitely be the one that will change the leaderboard. Crews will begin over very fast and rocky tracks for 20km. They cross a big broken drift, and continue over narrow tracks ascending to 2,500 metres above sea level. Almost feel like the chyulu hills. rough and rocky tracks continue up to Tangulbei town. From here, it gets very fast, as crews will experience very long bends (some upto 2 km long) over loose marble like surface all the way to the finish. marathon stage with expected temperatures reaching 42 degrees in the shade. If you are adventurous, you could get to tangulbei and watch the cars - although plan well, and ensure your vehicle is well equipped. expected first car at Loruk will be 12:30. CS 9 - SPA - SOLAI 2 - 65 KM Sting in the tail stage. crews beging ascending over narrow tracks with blind brows and fast rocky. Several places with mud holes if not careful, will catch out the crews. 8 km of this stage will be over some harsh rocky roads, which is unfortunate. It will be a relief to the crews after 40km where they will rejoin the morning stage and climb up to Solai over very good roads. expect first car to start stage at 13:26 hours. If you intend to watch this stage, it is recommended you enter from Mogotio town and continue a few km to a marshalled junction. Park safely and enjoy the last stage.
