History of Pulse Oximeter Pulse oximetry was developed in 1972, by Takuo Aoyagi and Michio Kishi,

bioengineers, at Nihon Kohden using the ratio of red to infrared light absorption of pulsating components at the measuring site. Susumu Nakajima, a surgeon, and his associates first tested the device in patients, reporting it in 1975.

Oximetry is the measurement of oxygen saturation in arterial by transmiting light through a translucent area of a patient. This is done noninvasively and the oxygen saturation level is computed based on the measurement. This device is responsible for saving thousands of lives each year.

Pulse oximeter has become affordable and widely available for home use.

Uses and Benefits of Pulse Oximeters

A pulse oximeter is a device intended for the non-invasive measurement of arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate.

Oximeters are widely used in hospitals, medical clinics, operating rooms, and homes

Pulse oximeter is used medically by patients with asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic obstructive airway diseases (COAD), and other respiratory conditions
