Wij zijn bijzonder fier op het groene karakter van onze UNESCO Werelderfgoedstad. Het is heerlijk wandelen en fietsen in Brugge. Alle historische gebouwen, congreslocaties en de vele charmehotels liggen samen tussen de prachtige groene stadswallen, en onze luchtkwaliteit is de zuiverste van de Vlaamse centrumsteden. Het milieubeleid is dan ook toonaangevend in Vlaanderen, met onder andere de eerste hybride stadsbussen en Alpenenergie voor alle stadsgebouwen. Dat ook de Brugse musea, hotels, vergaderlocaties en andere congresdiensten streven naar een duurzame werking is de congresorganisator niet ontgaan. In 2010 ontvangen wij enkele belangrijke congressen rond duurzaamheid, waarover meer in deze gids.

Nous sommes très fiers du caractère vert de notre ville du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Il fait bon se promener ou faire de la bicyclette à Bruges. We are very proud of the green character of our UNESCO Word Heritage City. Bruges is a lovely place to walk or cycle. All the historic monuments, congress locations and the many charming hotels are located only minutes from each other, enclosed by the magnificent green city ramparts. Moreover, Bruges’ air quality is the best of all Flemish central places. Our environmental policy has inspired many other Flemish towns. Thus, Bruges was the first city where hybrid city buses are operating and energy from the Alps is used in all the municipal buildings. The many efforts the Museums of Bruges, the hotels, the congress locations and the other congress services have made in the field of environmental protection have not remained unnoticed by the congress organizers. Ik heb niets dan positieve reacties gekregen, zowel van het management als van de collega’s: iedereen was zeer tevreden over de hotelaccommodatie, de ontvangst, het dinner-event, het ontbijt, het afsluitende bezoek aan het chocolademuseum met kundige en vriendelijke gidsen. Niet in het minst was iedereen onder de indruk van Brugge zelf!

A ride with the horsetram is a very original and fun event. Groups up to 55 people can choose their own itinerary. There are 3 trams available. Always a hit! The coachmen business Dirk Stael is the only one in Bruges that manages “the Horse tram”. These tram-cars, pulled by horses, can be hired by appointment all the year round. TOWARDS A GREEN ECONOMY WITH i-SUP2010 The second edition of the international conference on sustainable production, i-SUP2010, will take place in Bruges from April 18th till April 21st. With their brand new concept, VITO and the “Milieu and energietechnologie Innovatieplatvorm Vlaanderen” (Environment and energy technology innovation platform) will redefine the borders of the scientific convention. No fewer than 6 multi-disciplinary subcongresses will be taking place simultaneously in one building, fusing together on the last day into a visionary think-tank about the future of a (green) economy.

“Greening the economy” is not just a hype where we simply need to color the economy green. It takes a radical change: a fundamental rethinking of our consumption and production patterns, the integration of product and process design, the search for innovative materials and new forms of energy production, crossing the borders of industry branches and chains, and creating connections between industry, habitation, transport, agriculture,... The very nature of sustainable development implies the interconnection of economy and ecology in this technological, cultural and social revolution. i SUP aims at various target groups and disciplines involved in ‘green economy’: universities, research institutions and scientific centres, but also to companies, sectors and decision makers.

The pioneering programme content of i-SUP2010, and the unique location of the Oud Sint-Jan site in Bruges, will offer an indispensable and highly inspiring experience to all those who believe that sustainable production is the solution to save our earth and our economy. i-SUP2010 has the honour of being introduced by Rajendra Pachauri, president of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a world-wide authority on sustainability and co-holder of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace, together with former vice-president of the US, Al Gore.

BEAUTIFUL BRUGESi-SUP2010 aims at an international audience. VITO’s choice to hold the event in Bruges for the second time is not only inspired by the cultural and tourist attraction of this world heritage city. VITO knows by experience that the city administration has made serious efforts over the past years to make the city ‘cleaner’, i.e. environment-friendlier. VITO conducted the research that was neede to optimize the air quality of Bruges by adjusting the flow of traffic. Moreover, Bruges’s added value lies in the fact that it is easily accessible by public public transport and that all the hotels and convention centres are located within walking distance from each other.

GREEN EVENTEvery year, thousands of researchers fly around the world on their way to congresses to learn from each other how they can improve the world’s environment and sustainability. But what is their own sustainability score? By integrating six topics, i-SUP2010 attempts to confront the attendees more intensively with each other on subjects lying further away from their own sphere of interests.

i-SUP2010 makes a first attempt to self-evaluate its sustainability, using the United Nations’s ‘Green Event Guide’ as a guideline. The aim is not to distribute any unnecessary gadgets, printed documents and suchlike. Recycling, fair trade and regional and seasonal products during the meals, are just a handful of the measures implemented by i-SUP in order to acquire a sustainable attitude without suffering a loss in quality. A sustainability evaluation checklist for the congress, based on the ‘Green Event Guide’, will be online very soon. All recommendations for improval will be evaluated and i-SUP2010 will become a starting point and a touchstone for all future i-SUP congresses.

Since i-SUP is a purely scientific and technological congress, we also intend to practice what we preach and to look at this event as just one step on the path to sustainability. We would like to invite everybody to think along with us and to enter into a dialogue on the path to sustainability with the attendees and the organizers.

However, we will not limit ourselves to the 3 P’s (‘People - Planet - Profit’) but would like to add a fourth: the P for pleasure as will spare no effort to make sure that that his how every participant will look back at i-SUP2010!
