Project : Greenwood International School

Site : Rajkot ,Gujrat ,India.

Year : 2013-2014

Type : School for kindergarden,primary section.

Concept : Informal playscapes

Project Brief

The intent was given to restore a g+1 existing school by recreating certain elements like the elevation,class-rooms,plinth and the surrounding scapes .Thus the design was seen as an opportunity to create a playscape for toodlers in a setting of natural environment.

CONCEPT

The proposal simply converts the quadrangle enclosed on three sides in a stepped up soften land-scape which simultaneosly acts as a meeting ground as well as early morning prayer space.Such a soften landscape would go through the classroom on the south and west by removing the existing classrom walls and re-placing with folding sliding doors.The classroom on the ground foor thus would appear to sit on the earth appropriate-ly friendly to the little ones.The interface between the proposed landscape open space and the existing classroom is created out of simple brick walls tied to each other at places with hollow cubes protruding down for hanging baskets of flowers ,play toys made out of bamboo fibrement and resting places for birds with water treys.Also the position of the hollow cubes at different level becomes an informal staircase and visually creates a sense of rhythm to become the main elevation feature of the building.The floor basket in these boxes hoped would also attract butterflies species thus creating and ambience for the process of natural learning.In addition to this,the folding sliding doors as blinds will have hanging curtains made out of bamboo rebriecement which will as a natural cooling element in hot months and thus protecting the sunlight on the south west faces of the building.Thus,all these elements when brought together will rejuvinate the existing space and hopefully create a ‘built as a playground’ and not ‘built form and a playground’.

The combination of exposed fenestrat-ed bricks punctured with series of cubes in white and green makes the building, look contempeorary ,by creating an identity of its own and also seemlessly blending with the context and culture of a semi-arid region,Gujrat.The hollow cubes not only has a visual rhythm but also adds a dynamic layer to the 2-dimensional brick wall by creating a series of engaging possibIIties with a child.Thus,’Informal playscapes’is a moment that a child will experience in a setting composed by these elements mak-ing him friendly and open with the surroundings. .

The Classroom interiors emerges in form of clut-ers each being a learning module and physically manifested in form of basic shapes and size which are accustomed to a child .The walls are cladded with alphabets and numericals as furniture which not onlyadds as a medium of usage but also a layer of visu-al graphics to the setting.The vibrancy of the interiors is achieved through bold primary colours to become a captivating feature to the overall composition.

Concept : Reflecting personalities

The project is a 4bhk apartment where the concept revolves around reflecting personali-ties of the individual residing in that particular space.In son’s bedroom,brutal lines of the furniture finished with grey tone creates a bold ambience while on the other hand minilas-tic lines that creates a form of bed ,headboard and shelves highlighted with L.E.D creates an ambience of simplicity and vibrancy for the parent’s bedroom.The daughter’s bedroom designed with continuous line that forms a lounge into a headboard then into a sideboard in lilac and white creates an ambience of a bold furniture and innocent colours,reflecting the personality of the individual.

JUHU STREET MALL_2011 - 2012

Concept : Food Factory

Juhu being a node for inflow of tourist and local usres,the idea was to meet the de-mands of both, where the raw material is a retail for locals and the product of that same raw comodity becomes a retail for the tourist.The adjacent diagram shows a proposal where the intervantion works like a system called ‘PICK -PACK -EAT’where a user will pick a raw comodity in first section ,then pack it in another section and can finally eat the product of same raw material to enhance the experience of retail.

These concept was physically manifest-ed by creating six modular sets where each set represents a comodity of vegetable,-friuts,meat,milk,flowers,fish and meat to form a fluid and continuous raw,process and product band.The intervention consist of three levels where upper level has raw material,mid level has the porcess of raw and lower level has the product of the process in order to under-stand the nature of comodity from raw to pro-cess to product through a vertical movement.

Hence,’PICK-PACK-EAT’not only rejuvinates the experience of retail but also promotes the idea of ‘Slow food movement’where the user is an intergrated part of growing,prepar-ing and finally the consumption of comodity.

The longitudinal site is fragemented into series of platforms stacked and staggered vertically to simulate the nature of a food factory.Hence,the building appears to be a secional void punctured with a series of fragemented masses to form a fluid and continuous band.The program itself creates engaging space with growing fields on the upper level,tranculent tubes enclosing the mid level and stepped up node for restaurant and lounges at the lower level.

Concept : Galleries as a viewing device

The location of Jehangir Art Gallery along the corner of Kala Ghoda opens a possibility for great vantages of the city fabric.Starting from the rajabhai tower on one side to bom-bay stock exchange building on the other along with David Sasoon Library,NGMA art gallery in between,the extenion is a series of galleries that act as a viewing device for the city.The galleries are acting as visual frames to create connec-tion of the artist or a visitor right from the old gallery to the Rajabhai tower that evokes a feeling of power,David Sasoon library talking about contemplation ,Bombay Stock Ex-change that represents the economics of the city,NGMA art gallery,Prince of Wales museum that compares the ancient and the modern art and culture of the city,Hence,these inter-locked and overlapped visual volumes becomes a medium for the artist and visitors to inspire and aspire from the city.

Project BriefThe Brief was to create an extension to a heritage art gallery situated in the heart of british collonial reign ,South Bombay.
