NAME : Tai O Twin Bridges Competition (Open Group for Po Chue Tam Footbridge) - ARM BRIDGE

ORGANIZER : Civil Engineering and Development Department

YEAR : 2013

TEAM : Man Hok Wai, Chung Wai Yee

AWARD : Finalist of Open Group for Po Chue Tam Footbridge

DESIGN CONCEPT :

Po Chue Tam have a special landscape. The feature of stilt houses, Yeung Hau Temple, mangroves area, barbecue site, etc. attracted a lot of people to visit. For this, the objective of the design is to connect the barbecue site and the mangroves area by expanding the green area. The design concept of ARM BRIDGE is come from “garden”. It merge into the landscape by using the nature material. The midspan can be swing to open and close just like an arm. When the bridge is separated, it create small parks in both side of the coast for people to relax. The ARM BRIDGE keeps the original feeling of the Po Chue Tam and provides a public space for enjoy the nature landscape.

Page 13: MH Portfolio

SCENARIOSThrough building up different levels of the bridge, it may bypass the people and the car. Moreover, it allow more program to happen on the bridge.

The bridge adopted Tai-O traditional stilt house’s construction method. Midspan can be opened by the double layers track. This method can avoid blocking the view.

It allow different kinds of activities to happen. People can play with water, enjoy the sunset, taking picture, etc.

When there is festival or a boat passed by, the bridge will fold-up into two and create a platform and seating around to relax.

NAME : Tai O Twin Bridges Competition ( Open Group for Yim Tin Footbridge ) - ISLAND BRIDGE

ORGANIZER : Civil Engineering and Development Department

YEAR : 2013

TEAM : Man Hok Wai, Chung Wai Yee

AWARD : 1st Prize of Open Group for Yim Tin Footbridge

DESIGN CONCEPT :

A bridge may not be only for transportation, but also as a platform to connect the people from two sides. The concept of the ISLAND BRIDGE is come from “island”. Island is used to create a node and to improve the function of the bridge. It allow different kinds of activities to happen. People can play with water, enjoy the sunset, taking picture, etc. while not blocking the pedestrian route. It can disperse the crowd. The bridge adopted Tai-O traditional stilt house’s construction method. Midspan can be opened by the double layers track. This method can avoid blocking the view. The ISLAND BRIDGE is give a new experience to people to explore Tai-O.

NAME : Creative Smart Parking – Cycle Parking Rack Design Competition

ORGANIZER : ARUP + Civil Engineering and Development Department

YEAR : 2013

TEAM : Man Hok Wai, Chung Wai Yee

AWARD : Commendation Prize

DESIGN CONCEPT :

"A"  PARK  cyclic parking rack is mainly made by fiberglass. This material is not only rain proofed, but also easy to clean. Unlike the traditional steel rack, the new design will never be rusted. The gate and handle will make by aluminum with a built-in lock to provide a reliable protection of the bicycle. There will be an indicator light on top of the parking rack to show the unused one. It saves time for the user to find an empty parking rack. The layout of the parking area is merged with a grid system. A 1.5M X 1.5M distance can provide a  sufficient space  for users. By using a grid reference system, each parking rack will have a unique code for the user to find back their bicycle easily. The whole design will be form by several components, such as trees or bench and the rack. Each component can be freely combine and arrange. It makes the design become more flexible and dynamic for different environments and different usages. It may also provide a possibility to re-arrange the entire component in the future.

EARLY SKETCHES

TIMELINE OF A PRE-TEEN (IN A DAY)

STUDY IS SO BORING!

10-15 is an active learining age for children, which is also called a pre-teen. They should learn and play a lot to understand not only the subject in the school, but also about the surrounding. The most effective way to learn is through playing.

However, due to some education problems, students easy to get bored in learning. Beside that, the student didn’t know what they really good at so that their talent can’t be well developed.

In traditional, Pocket Parks tend to act as scaled-down neighborhood parks, but still often try to meet a variety of needs. They can be a refuge from the bustle of surrounding urban life and offer opportunities for rest and relaxation. The space is restricted and user needs are both diverse and vary throughout the day, conflicts can sometimes arise between different groups.

Not only this, through my research and observation, I find that most of the park in Hong Kong are actually losting its function of being a public space. The facilities inside is just base on a formula, but there are around 640 pocket parks in Hong Kong. The park is design for pre-teen. I seldom see them play in the pocket parks. This make me feel interested in studying the meaning of public space in Hong Kong.

In 1970s, people in Hong Kong do not have much entertainment. There are no Playstation, Iphone, internet or even it is rare to have a television. The only things they may affort is books. Books become their only entertainment but also an education tools for the pre-teen at that time. They may occuipted a public space and learn and play with there friend. That is really hard to see nowaday.

In human’s knowledge, a bookshelf is a shelf or a container to collect books. This is an icon of knowledge. We still can see some of the old and traditional book store in Hong Kong. They are still having some mobile bookshelf for people to learn in the public space. This also very inspiring for me.

MONG KOKMong Kok is traditionally a place for pre-teens or teenagers to entertain. The entertainment are mostly indoor and do not contain any subject to learn. Most of the parent do not want their children to play in Mong Kok. But still, there are many teens addicted in this entertainment area. And I believed that Mong Kok will be a good starting point for the Edutainment Commune to transform pure entertainment to edutainment.

AS A START

POCKET PARK IN

I start to develop my concpet form a bookshelf. Which I think a bookshelf is a signature or icon of a container of knowledge. Thus, I would like to have a new version of knowledge container with a portible feature to transport it into public space.

Moreover, I think the original park can be ignored and I should create a new experience for the pre-teen to play. At the beginning I used cotton to wrap the space. But after a further develop, it become a functional wall instead.

The entertainers groups are formed by some people form 3 area. They are creative industry, sport industry and also game origanizing industry.

They mainly help and teach the pre-teen the use the device and play around with them.

Organizers are a group of people who care about the talent development of the pre-teens. They are a collectives formed by some teachers and house wife.

They made a mobile educatainment device themself and place it in the pocket park for teach and play.

EDUCATORSORGANIZERS

DUTY : Helps in TEACH

The educators groups are formed by some teachers and scholars. Which they really care about the learning method for the children.

They mainly help assess the preformance of the pre-teen and make a record for them to suggest some follow education later on.

PRE-TEENS (TYPE A) PRE-TEENS (TYPE B)

PRE-TEENS (TYPE A)

PRE-TEENS (TYPE B)

USERS

Eductainment commune targeted this type of pre-teen is mainly because they do not have time to relax. They were forced to study and take after school course buy their parent. It may affect their learning performance and get bored in learning.

Features : 16hrs PLAY

USERS

This type of users spend most of their time in playing. Pre-teen is also a age to discover and play but it made their parent feel worry about them. The eductainment commune

will targeted the pre-teens at the age 10-15. It is because the student in this aged is more interested in learning.

Moreover, 10-15 is also a good range of age to discover the talent to start to develop.

EDUCTAINMENT MODULE

CONNECTED IMAGE

The design will mainly focus on flexibility and mobility. All 16 activities and their equipment will be stored into 16 1800mm tall cabinets with 4 wheels. The Edutainment Pod will be drive like a trolley by the organizer on the street as advertisement in the afternoon everyday and pop-up for activities in the pocket park.

The pod will go for a plain and modern design which is white in color with perforated aluminum sheet. It will be rainproof with its material and an extension roof. Each of the cabinet can be interlocking with each other to form a circle and create a distinct and atmosphere inside. Once all the Edutainment Pod is set up and ready, there will be music to attract pre-teen to come.

The connecting arrangment is basically arranged by the need and share of equipment of the design itself. If they are having the same design, like solar panel, I will put them near to other so that they can share the power.

The design can fit in any pocket park in Hong Kong. There is not necessary to keep like a circle if the space is not allowed. The number of the module can also be adjust according to the client needs.

EXHITITUTE In the future 20 years, the fashion industry will ...... Gobal Warming > Concern Materiallity > Organic Fabric

Many fashion brand concern about “GREEN” now. Like Muji, they want to create a harmless fashion. So, The Fashion Brand will be one of my target.

Fashion Brand

The man who believe in green lifestyle will probabily buy the cloth in organic fabric. It is because they want to help in GREEN.

Former Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters (荷李活道警察宿舍)

Textiles Company is one of the major target I proposed. As nowadays, textiles company is still using some old fashion and unGREEN material.

Textiles CompanyThe Factory may also needs a huge supply of the raw material. It need them for production and mock up production.

Fashion Factory

The Kids or Baby is also some one who have a very sensitive skin. They are easy to get affected by the surrounding.

Kids/BabyThe people who have a sensitive skin will always love to buy organic cloth. It is because without any chemical in production, skin will less sensitive.

In the space, people may have a holy feeling on the nature sunligh and the reflection of the water. It remind the importance of water and promote the apps.

The other pop-up store will be located on the ending point of the Hong Kong Marathon. As the need of the sportman, the store will be more functional.

As this reason, the uniqueness of the company will be the diversity of being a “second watch”. How to be easier to carry? How is the machine or usage inside the watch to be more suitable for people? The words “diversity” and “machinery” will become the main concept of our exhibition. Our booth will be a unique booth that it is a “machine of time” as well as a “WATCH”

DESIGN CONCEPT

DESIGN METHOD BASIC UNITS

Project Background

Hong Kong’s population is aging rapidly. Although there are many senior homes in Hong Kong, the problem of elderly living may not be solved easily. The living quality of these senior homes is not so good in general. The elderly live there may not be happy.

Thus, I like to design a senior home with a good living environment It aims to provide a happy life for the elderly

LOCATION

The residents can have their own choice on many things, e.g. they can choose their meal, their storage, their views or their rooms

CHOICEThe residents can have enough privacy for them to do their own things. So that they will not be disturb by other easily.

The residents can have their personal belonging so that that own something and a sense of ownership could be established

OWNERSHIP

For each unit, I designed 4 bsic elements. They are : 1. A bed with a shelf ; 2. A working table with a chair ; 3. A sofa and a television ; 4. A 2-piece toilet.

Basic Element

After I designed the different units, I tired to combine them and make an unique form. I arranged them unparellai so that it created a corridor and have both view of inside and outside.

Page 25: MH Portfolio

The green garden will be the centre of the senior home and the community centre. People may walk around and gather the people in SKM here.

The green garden is next to the cafe, people may relax there.

The elderly center will be on the podium of the SKM estate and using a bridge to connect the two. It will become a center of SKM.

There will be many open activity rooms for the society in the podium level, like some computer rooms, multimedia rooms or movies area etc.

By the layering inside and outside. The elderly may have more interactive with the public here. Elderly may look down the atrium and communicate with others.

People will mainly use ramps for the circulation instead of stairs. It is because for the elderly, using stair is too difficult, but the gentle ramps is better.

A CABIN

DESIGN CONCEPT

MODEL

In this project, I was asked to make a cabin on the slope which looks dynamic. My concept is came from a rolling stone which is moving and give a feeling of emotion and energetic.

By using different shot like a movie, I make my design to have many layers. Each layer represent one motion. And I try to fill in different function in by the human scale

ZONING

SCENARIO

DETAILBy making use of different layers and angles, some space will occupted. I try to make some of the angle become open, but some are close.

The opened angle is very good for sun shelding and ventilation. The closed angle is good to create privacy and moods.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

ZONING PLAN TYPES OF ARRANGE

I am going to make a hotel room like a gadget. As I think that the bed is the most important element in a hotel room. I would try to provide different experience in same hotel room by using a piece of furniture system.

For the furniture, it will be divided into four parts. Each parts will have a supported side to supporting them. Moreover, each side will be helping each other when you open them at the same time.

Experiment of human body measurement applying in sitting device base on a piece of wood. Applying folding method to compose the sitting platform, sitting back and supports of the chair.

Sometime we make noise without our noticification. Sounds is something we meet everyday. In this plaything, people can freely make noise and jam a noise like a instrument but they will never know what the sound make of.
